I had the steak fajitas and they were very good and good portion sizes. My wife and daughter each had enchiladas and they said they were very good. So when you walk in the greeters are dressed in Mexican dresses with Mexican colors. It was really cold in the restaurant. You get chips and salsa for free. This guys walks around making tableside guac. We got it and it wasn't so great. Needed more lemon and jalapeños. Wasn't spicy enough. I ordered fajitas and didn't like them so much. They were kinda sweet. Maybe the onions were caramelized too much. I didn't care for the meat. It wasn't strips of meat it was more like bits. I called in a to go order today and the Fajita Salad did not come with lettuce and the a la carte cheese quesadillas I ordered for a kid cost $15. When I questioned the price of the quesadilla for my kid she just turned the monitor around and showed me a quesadilla that cost $15, not the a la carte one I ordered. A for effort, B for food. As I entered Azteca, I immediately had the feeling that this Mexican restaurant was going to be different. It was very colorfully decorated and the wait staff had actual Mexican style uniforms. Nice touch. The next thing I noticed was that there was a fairly small area to wait to be seated. Thankfully, we were sat in about 5 minutes. Our waitress sat us down in a booth that I could tell was old because I sank down a couple of inches. Chips were brought along with some kind of slaw which was a first for me. Thankfully they also had some hot sauces to go with the regular mild. Next different feature would be the fact that they have three menus. The first one was a picture menu showing all their "special" entrees, the second was the general menu and lastly was the dessert menu. Next thing that caught my eye was that everything seemed to be a little more expensive than what I was used to. That was okay because the portions were larger as well. I ordered my usual Dos Equis Amber and the largest mug they offered was a 22 oz. I would like to have had a 32 but that was fine. I would also liked to have seen a greater beer selection on draft but again, it's not a problem. The burrito was fine, I mean I've had better, I've had worse. The family seemed to enjoy their entrees and the kids really like the free sopapillas. They want to come back for the birthday song. We'll see. read more

We went here on a Sunday after church because my mom wanted Mexican. I really like this location the best. It is clean, staff are all friendly and the prices are great. I got the chicken and rice and it was very good. They also give you complimentary salsa and chips that are really good. The refried beans are one of my favorites. They put cheese on them The portions are huge, two people can eat from one plate or if you're like me.....leftovers. Food came out fast and was hot! Oh and they give complimentary desert! read more

I have yet to find any amazing Mexican in the Charlotte area, but Azteca was pretty darn good. The atmosphere is really fun and inviting with all of the decor of a Mexican joint. The waitstaff is all dressed like bull riders and a man comes by with a fresh guacamole cart if you want some. The chips and salsa were great and plentiful. We also got the cheese dip which didn't disappoint. The chicken enchilada and shredded beef taco were both very good. The meat was clearly fresh. I was disappointed with the chile relleno. My boyfriend loved his food (we got the same thing). They give you a little free dessert thing at the end which is a nice added touch. The service was amazing and fast! read more

This was our first experience here since COVID and chose tonight partially due to reviews that they are good with social distancing and separating dining tables. However, soon after we arrived a large group of tables for a party were combined. They appeared to be expecting 24 people by our count and were will over 30 plus when we left, with more coming. Not sure what is going on but the service is not good at all anymore. I used to go to Azteca frequently pre-Covid. We went for dinner on 2/23/2021. It was very over crowded. We were not 6 feet from the next individual. The booths were not spread apart and we sat at the bar area booth thinking we'd have more room. The lady that was our waitress took a very long time to bring water and our drinks, like she forgot. Then she kept providing us wet straws from her pocket. So I asked for another straw and it was wet as well from her pocket which was disgusting as I wasn't sure what was on it. I ended up getting up and going to the bar to get us a dry straw. I used to look forward to my visits to get my "salty dog" drink. My salty dog had no salt around the rim and tasted watered down and I couldn't taste the grapefruit juice, which was disappointing. I think I'll continue going to Fiesta down the road. At least I know they will not seat me right next to another person coughing. Sad because we really liked this place. read more

The husband had a combo with tacos and he asked the waiter if the hard taco shells were made in house or if they were the pre-made type. He was told they were made in house. Maybe they are, but they look very pre-made - he was kind of ticked. I had flautas and they just were not great. The rice was super boring, neither of us finished it and at some point we realized we never got any chips and salsa? What Mexican restaurant doesn't give you chips and salsa?!?!?! I love Mexican food. Food trucks, burrito stands, nicer Mexican restaurants ... I love it all. Perhaps it was growing up in Southern California, but I have a soft spot for all food Mexican. So I was highly disappointed overall with Azteca. The chips were good, and the table-side guacamole was a nice touch (3-4 stars there). Sadly, the rest was a downward spiral. I recall thinking that the Aztec civilization died out centuries ago - about the same time my meal probably got put under the heat lamp. Perhaps an exaggeration, and I am sure that the heat lamp was a small part of the issue. In short, the dinner entrees here are not so good. Tamale was horrible, dry (even when smothered with a random orange sauce). Worse, the cheese enchilada was hard to describe. Much like chips and salsa, I consider cheese enchiladas to be a canary in the mine for Mexican restaurants. When good, both are normally harbingers of a tasty meal. This one was covered in a flavor lacking "redish orange" sauce and the cheese itself was even on the meh side. Carne asada was dried out a little. Well seasoned, but sub-par, butterflied shrimp were not bad, but tasted more like salted butter than anything else (may have been one of the slightly better things on the plate). Refried beans were ok. I noted that the restaurant mentioned home made tortillas. I highly doubt this was the case during our visit. Tasted more like store bought. Last - sigh, the sangria was very ho-hum. And I really needed drink by that point :) So my take away - not a place I would eat again. The staff was friendly, chips, salsa and guacamole were good and they had margaritas and beer, so I could imagine coming here for happy hour if I worked locally, but other than that - best to avoid this failed restaurant/civilization. read more

I've been to a dozen or so Mexican restaurants in and around Charlotte but it seemed like something was missing? Having lived in SoCal for 20 years I got used to going out to authentic neighborhood mom and pop joints where all the Locals ate. Most of the time they only spoke Spanish and it wasn't a fancy sit down place but the price was very good and the portions were huge and oh, the food and flavor was over the top! Last night on a whim I stopped by Azteca on Hwy 74, ordered Steak Fahiatas oh wow what flavor! The portions were huge and the service by Omar was Top Notch, they even came to the table and made fresh Guacamole. Then to top it off I had the Flan for dessert and it was just the way Mrs. Morales made it, perfect! If you haven't been to this joint go, you'll be glad you did and I am going back next week for more! read more

Had to press for basic service and the meal seemed how little they could serve and charge similar prices comparable with the prior number of times we've dined there. This place is a jewel in the rough, and I think that a lot of people won't have the pleasure of discovering how good their food actually is. Their table side guacamole is great- nothing surprising, but it's nice that you can get extra jalapeño or whatever you want. I ordered the ostiones as an appetizer, and they were MAGICAL. White people, pay attention here: ANY TIME you are at a Mexican restaurant and you see 'ostiones', you need to ORDER THEM. Similar to 'shrimp cocktail', Mexican raw oysters are a completely different animal from their guerro counterparts. The ostiones came with a delicious habañero salsa, which MADE the experience. Seriously, this is one of those things that you need to try in order to broaden your world. Get your mind right, playa. I ordered a steak, and it was exactly what I wanted. Their bisteka a la tampiquena is spot-on, perfectly seared skirt steak with fat onions, rice, and beans. This is the sort of place that you need to come to if your only experience with Mexican food is a step up from Taco Bell. Great food / loud atmosphere. A buddy and I decided to hit up Azteca after arriving in Charlotte (layover). It was no surprise that the restaurant was VERY busy (Saturday night). We were lucky enough to find seats at the bar. I ordered the Paella Mexicana (see photo for ingredients). My dish was good! The rice felt undercooked... and the scallops were a bit over cooked, but overall the dish was pretty good. The best advice I can give you is watch your account if you pay by debit or credit. An extra $1 was added to my purchase when I looked online. I guess they figured most people wouldn't notice. Of course $1 is no big deal, but it's the principle of it that leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Not to mention bad business practice. The food itself was pretty good, but the portion size wasn't particularly the best. I am a big fan of chicken fajitas, so I already anticipate restaurants putting more onions and peppers than anything. But here they put a VERY little amount of chicken. This has been our "go to" Mexican restaurant for some time. Tonight we walked in and were seated. As per usual, we received chips and salsa. Then we sat for 20 minutes. No water, no wait staff, nothing. We saw the hostess and asked what was going on with having a wait person. After 25 minutes, we walked out. There were numerous staff around but they just kept dashing by us. I know that local restaurants are having trouble getting enough staff and, in all fairness, this is unusual for this restaurant but all it takes is being ignored for nearly a half an hour and that's it. We went to a place around the block called Monterey, were served immediately, ordered the same thing we would have had at Azteca and it was delicious! New favorite! read more

I travel a lot and this may be the best Mexican Food in the country. Anytime I am in Charlotte I make sure to eat here at least once. Very traditional look and feel to this place. Staff is very friendly and recognize me even when it has been a year between visits. Seems like about every 20 minutes you hear them joyuously singing happy birthday to a customer who is wearing a large sombrero and blushing. Really feels like the people who work here love their jobs and the customers they serve. The Tacos Al Carbon is such a perfect dish, made the right way with skirt steak cooked to perfection and queso fresco cheese crumbles, combined with pico de gallo unlike any other I have had. All this carefully wrapped in corn tortillas that melt as soon as you get them in your mouth. The chips and salsa are good......... the guacamole that they make at your table fresh is outstanding and it is fun to watch them make it. They even let you tell them how much jalapeno to put in depending on how hot you like it. Queso dip is very tastey as well. Food seems to always be out promptly even when I have brought large groups. Here is what I didn't like about This place. My food was underwhelming and just plain. I ordered a taco salad and asked for grilled shrimp instead of beef or chicken. They were going to charge me extra which I said was fine but when she said it would be $7.99 extra I almost fainted. Why can't they substitute for the same price? Or only charge me a few bucks extra? I had the absolute worst service here today. We were celebrating a birthday and were left with a terrible experience. Service was slow. I asked for refill and and was not given it. The power went out and with that we expected delays and were understanding till the food came out. What were large $30 plates had minimal food and the food was cold, I asked for tortillas for my mother and was given uncooked tortillas in a basket, a complete joke. When I asked for a refill a second time I was told that was impossible to do as she couldn't ring it in and couldn't get me one. When I addressed the food on my plate to the waitress she gave me some crappy excuse which I then asked for a manager as I understand there isn't much she can do. The manager was a complete joke and kinda rude the chicken breast was literally 3 strips the size of a pinky he claimed that was a normal portion when other plates on the table similar to mine and my mothers had full size, the steak portion was burnt tips that wasn't even a small skirt steak. The jalapeños were larger than any of the main course sizes. The rice on everyone's plate was cold. I then asked the manager if he seriously thought that I believed that was a full portion and he proceeded to say well I don't know if you ate any? Which left me completely confused as his professionalism was clearly missing why would I bring up the issue after eating? Needless to say I pointed out I was not looking for a free meal but rather the plate I was paying for or had seen on the picture at least he said he would discount my plate which at that point there was no reasoning with these people and asked to just have the check at that point because we were ready to go by this time the power had returned. My meal was given a half off but outside of that not an apology for the cold food, the crappy service and the complete lack of respect.
