The service was good. A bit of a selection. The workers cut the fish to your liking. The fish seemed fresh. It was clean and did not have a fishy smell indicating it was fresh. The store was clean and well-stocked. The seafood appeared very fresh. The employees were not wearing masks despite state mandates (COVID). I purchased a pound of "jumbo" shrimp and a pound of lump crabmeat. When I got home I found that there were perhaps 6 jumbo shrimp, 4-5 medium shrimp, and the rest were large. I am pretty disappointed. Medium shrimp are not ideal for stuffing with crabmeat as when they are butterflied there is little shrimp to lay the crabmeat on. If I am simply mistaken about local shrimp size norms, then my rating for the store would be better as this was my only complaint. The crabmeat was pretty pricey....$21/pound, but seemed to be of good quality and seemed fresh. read more

I love B & J Seafood!! I love seafood and here I always get a good selection and good prices. The staff is helpful and friendly. At the local supermarkets the shrimp are mostly from Indonesia and are farm raised. Here I get American and Wild Caught fresh shrimp. They have a lot of types of fresh fish too. Flounder, Striper, Mahi Mahi, and lots more. The Scallops are great! The crab meat is great! They even have frozen octopus. I also love the spices and condiments and even Cajun E-Toufe sauce. This place is a gem! I wish there was one like this everywhere I travel. I've posted some photos. read more

Disappointed in the product. The order was for 12 large male blue crabs. I only got 11. There was a couple that didn't have claws. A couple of dead ones. None were large. A few probably aren't even legal to keep because they were so small. read more

I ordered oysters two years in a row at the beginning of to Oyster seasons. 2 bushels one each ear. The first year I brought home the bushel my daughter had put in the cooler in the back she didn't take a look, I poured it out and it was maybe a half a bushel. I called them they said Return to get the other half. I thought this was an honest mistake no biggie. Second gear this year, my daughter is in the Army she wanted oysters she was coming home beginning of the season I called they said they had some I ordered them one bushel went to get them some young man put them in the trunk of my car and my cooler and I drove off I had asked prior to leaving if they were salty I was told yes. I got home I had approximately 50 oysters that were not salty and they appeared to be kind of dry on the inside. That means to me that they're old. To make matters worse the second year in a row I've got shorted on oysters where in North Carolina is 50 oysters a bushel, for 70 bucks? Maybe they thought I was a tourist? I called them again ask for my other half I was told to come and get them. I went and got them, mind you it's a 40 minute drive one way to get these oysters from my house. Again the oysters were still not salty and not what I asked for I will never return. read more

I bought the Claw Crabmet from East Coast Seafood in Wilmington, NC. This is absolutely the worst container which was full of shells. It looked like someone just cracked the crab and dumped it in the container. I have never in all the years I have bought crabmeat seen such a mess with shells. Have usually liked seafood from B&J but was disappointed in customer service on yesterday's purchase. The sales staff could not give any information about a couple fish/eels in the case. Staff should be educated on new items they are selling. I asked if all sizes of "Fresh" shrimp in the case were local and was told that they were local that had been caught and frozen last winter and just now thawed because local shrimp were not currently available -- there was no indication on signage that these were previously frozen. When I returned home to clean two soft shell crabs and discovered one had no claws and the other only one claw, I called and the manager informed me that because of the way they are caught/sorted some do not have claws but they still sell whole abd clawless crabs at same price. I will continue to shop there but will ask more questions before purchasing. read more

Great selection and very good prices. But unfortunately the smell of the detergent spoiled all my purchases today. You can smell from the parking lot. I have to say that many places in New Bern share the same issue: there might be a new sanitation rule that forces them to use such strong chemicals. And it gets into the food. My guests had to apologize not to be able to go through with the dish. I cannot pass that. read more
