All of the sauces were bad. The sweet and the hot were both really runny. The Carolina one was acceptable. All of the food was lukewarm at best. Second time trying this place out. I didn't care for the first time. Figured I'd give it one more round. The place was clean and smelled good. The staff that we had encounters with were friendly and stayed busy. The atmosphere is comfortable and home feeling. My wife that had the pork enjoyed the plate. Said it was fresh and hot. I had the shrimp plate with fries, Mac, and hush puppies. The shrimp seemed as if it is definitely frozen for a bit but still tasted ok and was breaded decent. The fries were fries you'd get at a store. The Mac and hush puppies were hot and fresh. I gave four stars because their salt and pepper shakers got some humidity and didn't work. This was throughout the restaurant. An employee was helpful and gave us one that worked some. The floor also appeared to be a bit slippery and sticky and I would guess it's whatever they use to clean with. In the end of it all, I'll be back to get more. read more

I've been there three times recently primarily to get their bbq chicken plate. I really like the sauce they put on it so I bought a bottle to take home. The service is quick and the server comes around often to check on you. Good. I've also ordered the pulled pork plate which is abundant. I also like their baked beans and potato salad. Whenever we're in New Bern, we make an effort to eat here. It is one of our favorite BBQ restaurants. No matter what you order, it'll be delicious! Some times it's hard to decide what to order because the food is thhaaattt good, but if soft shell crab sandwiches are the "special of the day"...SOOOLLLDDD!!! My wife and I were in town and happened to stumble on this place because we were starving. We both greatly like barbecue but weren't necessarily in the mood for it. Very glad we decided to stop. The barbecue was really good, came out quickly and hot, and the service was outstanding. My wife wanted to sit in a side room that was being closed down, but the two young boys working back there allowed us to sit. They were Super polite, friendly, and worked their tails off. Had not eaten at this venerable (been around since the mid 1940's) Eastern NC BBQ joint in a number of years, so today we set it as the eastern most point in our latest barbecue run into the Eastern part of the state. Nothing fancy here - fast food ordering style, functional eating area with colorful tables and basic diner type chairs, paper plates and plastic forks & spoons, house sauce and Texas Pete on the tables. They still cook the whole hog, and they cook with wood, real wood, at least 50% of the time - they do use electric too. Go around back, on the right side of the restaurant, and you will see one of the largest stacks of wood in the Eastern part of NC. We tried the chopped pork in combo with BBQ Chicken, dark meat (around $7.50) with slaw and HPs. The pork is tender, moist, with a touch of smokiness, and it is well sauced out of the kitchen, giving the meat some really nice heat - similar in that aspect to B's, Ken's, Doug Saul's, and Howard's. This is just fine Eastern NC BBQ - few do it better. The house sauce on the table is super, some of the best Eastern style you'll find. The BBQ Chicken is very good, not quite up with the pork. The chicken is moist & tender, and the sauce is rather thick & red, but is not overly sweet, like much you encounter. They also serve some great Fried Chicken here. The mayo based slaw is nice, the HPs are really great - just a hint of sweetness, nice cornmeal flavor. The FFs are not good at all. Also tried a small fried seafood combo of Trout and Shrimp ($7.99) and this also was very nicely done. The Trout was fresh tasting, great texture, perfectly fried. The Shrimp were somewhat larger than popcorn shrimp, which I prefer, but they were also fresh tasting, well fried. They also serve some very nice Beef Brisket here, and Ribs on Saturdays. Friendly, efficient service here, and the time fot your order to come out of the kitchen is short. Took 2 pounds of chopped pork and 2 bottles of sauce home, wont hold till we can get back, but it's a start. read more

After frequently going to Moore's BBQ, under ownership of Tommy Moore, this place is more like Smithfields BBQ. My opinion is disappointing. Much smaller portions of food for the price, food very salty, watch it if you have High BP, and need to watch salt. The ribs are very smaller in size, where Tommy's were hanging over the plate, large in size. The BBQ sauce was nasty tasting like cheap bottle sauce with a heavy vinegar bite. Just saying... Not going to return to this place. Not care for Smithfields, and this is the same place only thing is name has changed. read more

The employees at Moore's were very friendly and the food was served quickly. I had the fried chicken and bbq plate. The barbecue was good but not the best I've ever had by any means. The fried chicken was excellent. For sides, I had collard greens and Brunswick stew. The Brunswick stew was below average compared to other establishments but the collards were good. While the meat portions were fairly large, the sides were very small. Overall, with the hush puppies and the banana pudding I ordered for desert, I left feeling full. The banana pudding was just ok. It was banana flavored pudding with no trace of actual bananas in it and definitely not what I'd expect from a good southern barbecue restaurant. The sweet tea was good. If I found myself in the New Bern area again I'd probably check out some different restaurants but I could see myself eating at Moore's again if I was in the neighborhood. read more

There is a great selection of toppings if that's how you roll.. Hot sauce, vinegar and butter! We're in Carolina.. So the sauce has a vinegar base. The Coles slaw is a little on the sweet side. However, everything else is spot on. I would have given a higher review but the prices have gone up with the change of owners. But again, the food has that Moore's BBQ flavor. Highly recommended! Disappointing. It's just not the same place. It's gone from a small town charm kind of place to...it looks like a chain fast food place. The food tastes different and yet all the same. It's extremely difficult to find anything remotely good for you on the menu. I understand it changed owners. It really shows. The nostalgia is gone for all the locals that know what the old Moore's brought to New Bern. Is the food good, I would say ok. Not bad but it's not the same as its predecessor. I will be comparing this to the once famous Moore's that use to occupy this same location because they have basically created a Moore's 2.0. You know how they say very few movie sequels are ever as good as the original, this is no exception. Was greeted politely as we entered in this 21st century restaurant. Atmosphere is very open and clean, as it should since it's not been open long. Tv screens in each corner of the dining area. They've made an attempt to bring in some character with very nice wood work along with old photos throughout. I even see some old familiar faces but nothing like the family friendly area we remember. This is just another fast food establishment occupying a once renowned family owned and occupied New Bern trademark. The food came out fast and was delivered to the table. I had a bbq tray with fries and slaw while my wife had the sandwich with fries. The bbq was good, not great along with shoe sting fries. The slaw was better but the hush puppies lacked flavor. The staff was a bit overbearing but I think that's due to its newness. In time, I'm sure that will go away. Will I come back, only to try the ribs served on Sun-Tue. All in all, I will continue to go to cookout for my bbq tray,slaw and hush puppies. This location is no longer the best place around for bbq. Stopped in for Lunch 10/26/21. To my wife and I this was the same as a Smithfield's Chicken and Barbeque but they sold sea food here as well. Wife got the chicken and said it tasted the same as Smithfield's but was very greasy here and left her stomach feeling upset the rest of the day. I got a barbeque plate and ditto, tasted the same. The baked beans are better at Smithfield's as they remind me of Big Johns Beans (yes I know I'm dating myself with that reference!) I don't like the hush puppies at either place but at Moore's they are way to sweet and do not taste like old fashioned corn meal hush puppies. Wife tasted them and said the same thing, way to sweet. The eastern Carolina style vinegar dip goes to Moore's as it has a more authentic taste than Smithfield's. All in all, as the old man in a Christmas story said about the wine, " It's not bad, but it's not good either." I don't see any return visits to Moore's in our future. read more

We actually killed time at our hotel in New Bern so we could have lunch at Moore's before driving to Kill Devil Hills. We knew we could not check into our condo anyway until later in the day. We had been in New Bern 2-1/2 years earlier and were unable to find time for a meal at Moore's. This time I was determined not to miss it. We each ordered a barbecue sandwich which comes with slaw. The cost is modest for these nice sized sandwiches. These are a good value and as I write this review a few days later, I could use one right now. I really enjoyed this pure, clean chopped pork. Their sauce is very simple vinegar with some red pepper flakes but not much if any salt and certainly no sweetness. The meat came pretty well dressed with the sauce but I did splash a little more on. I would have liked a little more slaw on a sandwich this size. For future reference, I would just order a side of slaw and adjust it. If I lived in New Bern, I would have one for lunch one day a week for sure. This is classic Eastern NC barbecue. I also ordered a brisket sandwich. I really did not need this much food, but wanted to see what they were putting out. My advice based on one try is stick to the delicious pork. I admire the old North Carolina joints that focus on one or two things. In this case I cannot give a glowing report on the brisket. You know how sometimes in judging competitions they will sometimes throw out the low and the high and average the remainder? In this case I am throwing out the low, the brisket. I rate Moore's on what they are in business for and that is the pork. The brisket was just roast beef and not really very good roast beef at that. It did not have much beefy flavor. It was not smoked and I cannot see how it is a beef barbecue. It was not tender and had a significant portions of fat included. It was served on a bun which I did not eat with some tomato based sauce. A strong four stars for the pork at Moore's. We won't discuss the beef any further, leave it to the Texans. read more
