Delicious, premium ice cream can be found in this local joint. I don't know how they manage the quality and variety they do in this tiny walk-up stand but it's sensational. Every single time. Take it from a bona fide ice cream connoisseur. My favorite offerings are Needham, Coffee Oreo, Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup, Pistachio and Indian Pudding (molasses) to name a few. The servings are huge and the prices are great. The help is friendly and enthusiastic and was as equally excited about their Easter opening date this year as I was (not as easy feat!). In addition to hard serve ice cream, there is a staggering multitude of soft serve flavors. You can get floats, milkshakes, Sundays, Italian ice and more. The last day of the year depends upon weather I suppose. Columbus Day or before as I recall. And though sad day, the fact that you can get half-price pints and quarts does make me a bit happier. It is a fifteen minute drive for us to come, but we try to make it every other week while they're open in the summer. Why? We want their coffee oreo. While they have so many great options on the menu, we'll each get coffee oreo. It is just too good to pass up, although I have gotten some whole oreos from time to time, which is a challenge to eat with melting ice cream. Parking is fine, although it can get busy during the summer. You might think you can show up five minutes before closing, but there could be a really long so be considerate. They also have pup cups with a milk bone on top. We always bring a dog. Probably my favorite ice cream spot in the county. Highly recommend. read more

Came and was pleasantly surprised by their option of non-dairy soft serve ice cream & flavors. Unfortunately it took 20+ mins to come out & was wrong. There was two people in our group, the dairy ice cream came out within minutes while I stood and waited as the rest of the line (10+ people) all received their various ice creams. No one else's order wrong. One lady who ordered after us even mentioned I had not received mine as she was getting hers, I had to go up to the window a second time after 5+ mins had passed (on top of the 10 I had spent waiting AFTER the other person in my party got their ice cream, 15 mins total by that point) and no one had updated me or brought my order. They finally told me they were "working on it sorry" and it came out multiple mins later, wrong size and not in a cone like I ordered. It's nice to see inclusivity with non dairy but maybe should be more upfront about how long you'll be waiting for it ... read more

Every town in Maine has their own ice cream shack/hut/stand. Gray, Maine has B&R Dairy Bar, which is OUTSTANDING! Established in 1971, B&R has been a landmark in Gray. A cash only business. Many varieties of both soft and hard serve ice creams (even gluten free) Italian ice, milk shakes, nor easter's(blizzards), frozen yogurt, homemade brownies, dilly bars,cookie sandwiches, and toppings. Staff were rude, disorganized and disrespectful. Instead of finishing my groups order they decided to work on multiple other orders that came after ours. There was only two people in our group! On top of that, they messed up my order, which I didn't even bother to address because of the previous unprofessional interactions. Needham ice cream is true love. They have a ton of options for ice cream, soft serve, sundaes, etc. I saw the Needham ice cream this fall and wasn't sure what it was. After spending more time in Maine, I had to try it. It lives up to my expectations. We got pints here in the fall and brought back to our Airbnb to enjoy. Their ice cream is good and I only come here because they have dairy free soft serve but their employees are extremely rude and I have never had an employee that has treated me with respect. They messed up our order and it wasn't difficult at all, and were rude when we told them. One time we visited and they had just closed but there website said they were open and we saw an employee mouth "f*** off", you're lucky we still give you business. let alone a tip. Great spot for ice cream and frozen treats! Very reasonably priced- got a Medium Noreaster for ~$4.50 and it included choosing AS MANY TOPPINGS AS I WANTED- WHAT! What I also liked, is that the toppings were well-distrubuted into the blizzard. I decided on choco chip cookie dough, Oreos, and m&ms!! Ample parking and friendly employees. I think one of the quality check points for a small rural town is the caliber of their ice cream joint. I think it was built into the Maine legislation that every Maine town have an ice cream place. I seriously can't think of one that doesn't! I am very happy that the B&R is that place for where I live. They make their own ice cream too. While I like Giffords and Round Top, there is something special about a place that makes their own and you only get it there. And they do not skimp on what goes into their ice cream. If you order Coffee Oreo, you get plenty of them. They do a peanut butter ice cream that is creamy and lovely. They even made a chocolate salted caramel pretzel one that made me a little swoony. Pistachio - on point. I have yet to have had a bad cone there. And have experienced no freezer burned ice crystals. They are your "typical" ice cream joint - but they set a high bar for the quality of what they serve. Cash only. Super cute little ice cream stand! It was the perfect way to end our day down the road at the Maine wildlife park. Scoops are ridiculously large.
