I sludged into La Banquise dead sober at 4:11am, as this is a legendary spot that is open 24 hours. I sat down in a bustling no frills atmosphere and remembered my deep appreciation for a 24-hour diner. You see people for who they really are this early in the morning. A couple in front of me was in a heated argument about what "being exclusive" really meant, while two separate groups of 4 to my right were feeling no pain and enjoying a poutine night cap. There I was, sipping on my black coffee mentally prepping myself for the 45 mile (72 km) day I had in front of me. The dichotomy of life. I asked the server what the most popular item was, and he said La Scooby. This monstrosity consisted of fresh cut fries, cheese, gravy, ground beef, bacon, onions, fried pickles, and caesar dressing garlic sauce. I got the small ($12.40 usd), but this thing was a TANK. It was bigger than my head and I have a HUGE head. The large must be a family style portion or somethin. Upon first bite, it was damn good. I completely see the poutine appeal. Is it an ideal meal dead sober at 4:11am? No, absolutely not, but this is an S-tier hangover food. Also, if there is ever a day when I need some extra calories, it's on a 100k step day. This place is REVELATION! I have never eaten such good burgers and not only the meat is fresh, juicy and tasty, it's also halal! Best of all worlds (ps: try the Farcy it's heaven on earth). Not to mention the fries and the poutine which taste amazing... I always end up getting a trio burger-poutine because it's waaaaay too tempting, though I know I can't finish it! We went around noon on a Saturday, luckily were able to find a spot to sit. This restaurant is very small and narrow, there are about 20 seated places, most of them at the bar. Better to grab and go as the atmosphere is noisy and cramped. We tried the "tit double" double cheeseburger, the chili burger, patty melt and sides of chili fries and "cantine" fries which had queso and big mac style sauce. Food is delicious, greasy, salty, well seasoned and fresh, fast to order and receive. The "tit" short for "petit" (small) double cheeseburger was definitely on the smaller side, for around $8.75 a decent price, but I was expecting something kind of monstrous and decadent by the photos. The burger is smaller than it looks compared to similar places. The fries are perfect for sharing. I noticed in Google reviews some people mentioned the fries were overdone, kind of burnt or crispy. I did notice this as well, however perhaps this is done for a reason. As most of their french fry dishes are covered in sauces, like poutine, chili, or queso, a slighter firmer crisper fry will hold its shape better and won't result in a soggy mess. Ideal for take out as you can still enjoy the texture of the potato minutes later. I would come back to try some of their other smash burgers but taking a star away for the location and comfort factor. There is only street parking, and such limited seating that you can't come in large groups or truly enjoy a sit down experience.
