Mimosas, beer, coconut rice, and W3: veggies with chicken

Wow, what a fantastic meal and great service we enjoyed at Baan Thai Wok and Bar Restaurant in Victoria! Delicious food and service was fast and friendly too. Emily greeted us and we were seated quickly, she delivered our happy hour (2-5 pm and 9-11 pm) drinks which were tasty! We ordered the W3: Cashew Vegetable dish with chicken and it was incredible! We eat a lot of Thai food and we have to say it was the best flavoring and freshest veggies we have enjoyed in recent memory! The interior is beautifully done with a mix of old brick and dark, luxurious color, wood, and wallpaper. Truly a great experience and most delicious meal! Highly recommend!

Chicken noodle soup, pad Thai

The chicken noodle soup and pork soup were really flavorful. Delicious drunken noodles and eggplant tofu. Great service and ambiance.

Dinner!

Quick review! We stopped in for dinner here at Baan Thai when our cruise ship stopped in Victoria B.C. We docked at 7pm and headed to Chinatown to scope out a good place. I'll credit my wife for finding this one. It was pretty good. We got there close to closing. It was my fault. There was a car show / cruise in by fishermen's warf and the downtown area. Lots of nice classics and modern classics to ogle at. Anyway, like I said the food was great and the service was spot on. Everything was delicious!!!! We enjoyed our Saturday dinner in Canada very much!

Panang and pad Thai

As a family of three we shared the chicken pad Thai (mild) and the chicken panang (medium). We were very impressed with the dishes, they came out very quick and were finished just as quickly! The only thing to note is that the spice levels are quite inaccurate. We typically have low tolerances and were skeptical to try the medium, no need. I would classify both dishes as no spice.

Red curry lunch special with coconut rice and Humboldt squid.

I was visiting Victoria and went here with a friend. I live in Vancouver and have been to Thailand, so I usually wonder if Thai restaurants are going to be up to snuff. This place certainly is. We both got the same dish, which was a red curry on special. The great thing is that they had the option of adding Humboldt squid, which we both did. Adding coconut rice made for a wonderful lunch and visit. The squid was excellent: very well cooked with large pieces that were flavourful and had fantastic texture. Really welcoming place with a nice soft, brown wooden interior and great service. I would go again.

Thai Green Elephant Restaurant - Ruam Mit ($20 for 2 people): pricey but a great way to start the meal!

They don't serve sticky rice. This is not a good place to eat. I've tried eating at many Asian restaurants in Victoria and many, especially Vietnamese and Thai are overly gentrified rubbish. How does this place get good reviews?

Note: those with kids will find there is no kid's menu, so be prepared to share or bring some home :) === 2. FOOD Thai Iced Tea ($4.50) Served in a tall, slim glass - lovely! Som Tum Thai (Green Papaya Salad, $16) A little on the small side for the price, but the flavours and mix of crunchy textures delight! Ruam Mit ($20 for 2 people) 2 x chicken satay skewers, 2 x spring rolls, and 2 x fish cake patties: the taste makes it worth the price of admission! Egg Fried Rice ($12.95 for large) So the portion is small for the price, but the flavour is delish and comes with that authentic taste that could only originate from a wok that had the right heat and cooking technique! Gang Dang (red curry, $19.50 with beef) This red curry has bamboo shoots and peppers, as well as your choice of prawns, chicken, pork, beef, or tofu. It comes in a small bowl and does not include rice so this may be the worst value on the menu, but the flavour is spot on. Pla Lad Prik (deep-fried fish, $25 for red snapper) You could do base fish for $1 less. The price is steep for what you get, but you will enjoy each mouthful. We got the sauce on the side which was good for us (your preference may differ) - it's sweet-and-sour like with chopped veggies. Nam Sai (like pho, $18.50 with pork) It's like a Thai version of Vietnamese pho! Comes with your choice of beef or pork. Nice and flavourful without being too strong or making you feel thirsty afterward. This might be the only item on the menu that aligns with the value/portion size! === 3. SERVICE It was good overall: reservation was taken easily and honoured, server was quite attentive and apologetic when she brought the incorrect dish and when the table seemed dirtier than expected upon arrival. No worries here! === 4. ENVIRONMENT It's a neighbourhood joint that shares the building with a framing company. Older on the outside and inside - to get up and into the place may be a challenge with those navigating a wheelchair or baby stroller. There are a decent number of tables for groups up to say, 10 or so amid the older, perhaps intimate decor. Parking is however lucky you are between the businesses; at least 5 spots appear to be available on the side of the building.

FOOD Moo Tod Kratiem ($20) This is like the Thai version of pork tonkatsu - panko-breaded pork sliced up - that's served up on a bed of cabbage, carrots, and bean sprouts. It was decent and my little guy like it but note for all parents: even requesting a dish to be "mild" can be seen as spicy for little ones! Gaeng Keaw Waan ($20) It's a green curry served with a bowl of rice - in it are chicken, peppers, carrots, and bamboo shoots. It's pretty good also but the same warning about "mild" applies here to parents of little ones :) Pad See-Ew Vegetarian ($22) You can order this with beef, chicken, or pork for the same price. It's decent with a hint of heat (when requested "mild"), but far too small for the price in takeout. === 3. SERVICE For a takeout order, the service was professional - they do get busy as the only Thai joint in the area surrounded by apartments, so call ahead for best results! === 4. ENVIRONMENT It's small, a little dim, but clean. Best to keep your groups to 6 or preferably 4 or smaller. We are big fans of traditional fare, but the Block is a place we are so glad we experienced and will certainly return utilizing the knowledge we garnered during our first experience. A big thank you to for helping us through picking one price fixe January exploration of your local restaurants and filling it with other ala carte additions. As we often do we ordered far too much food, wanting to explore everything off a menu that is far reaching. Not sure if our additions worked with the price fixe menu, but we sure enjoyed checking everything out. The interior is interesting with the addition of structural steel in the space to keep this heritage building (I think) standing tall for a few generations. We sure hope it's still here for a long while and will most likely come again the next time we are in Victoria. That is saying a lot as there are a wide range of restaurants in the neighbourhood, but you do want to check the Block out!
