Som Tum Thai (Green Papaya Salad, $16) A little on the small side for the price, but the flavours and mix of crunchy textures delight! Ruam Mit ($20 for 2 people) 2 x chicken satay skewers, 2 x spring rolls, and 2 x fish cake patties: the taste makes it worth the price of admission! Egg Fried Rice ($12.95 for large) So the portion is small for the price, but the flavour is delish and comes with that authentic taste that could only originate from a wok that had the right heat and cooking technique! Gang Dang (red curry, $19.50 with beef) This red curry has bamboo shoots and peppers, as well as your choice of prawns, chicken, pork, beef, or tofu. It comes in a small bowl and does not include rice so this may be the worst value on the menu, but the flavour is spot on. Pla Lad Prik (deep-fried fish, $25 for red snapper) You could do base fish for $1 less. The price is steep for what you get, but you will enjoy each mouthful. We got the sauce on the side which was good for us (your preference may differ) - it's sweet-and-sour like with chopped veggies. Nam Sai (like pho, $18.50 with pork) It's like a Thai version of Vietnamese pho! Comes with your choice of beef or pork. Nice and flavourful without being too strong or making you feel thirsty afterward. This might be the only item on the menu that aligns with the value/portion size! === 3. SERVICE It was good overall: reservation was taken easily and honoured, server was quite attentive and apologetic when she brought the incorrect dish and when the table seemed dirtier than expected upon arrival. No worries here! === 4. ENVIRONMENT It's a neighbourhood joint that shares the building with a framing company. Older on the outside and inside - to get up and into the place may be a challenge with those navigating a wheelchair or baby stroller. There are a decent number of tables for groups up to say, 10 or so amid the older, perhaps intimate decor. Parking is however lucky you are between the businesses; at least 5 spots appear to be available on the side of the building. read more

Fish sauce chicken wings were so old. The bones were dark brown, flesh was so hard and inedible. Papaya salad had old translucent tomatoes and more julienned carrots than papaya. They don't serve sticky rice. This is not a good place to eat. I've tried eating at many Asian restaurants in Victoria and many, especially Vietnamese and Thai are overly gentrified rubbish. I'm generally not a fan of Thai food, except pad thai and pad see ew. But damn this place is good, and not too busy- might I have stumbled upon a hidden gem? I've always had a thing against Thai satay (sorry), but the one here is much better than I've had in the past. While I still prefer Malaysian satay, the chicken satay here is is juicy and well seasoned, and peanut sauce adequately flavourful. The best thing though, was really the crispy duck. Oh my goodness. The duck was completely deboned, deep fried to a perfect crisp, then placed on delicious bed of greens and tamarind sauce. This dish is easily one of the best things I've eaten on the island. I mean, it was fried so well, the fat beneath the skin nearly melted in my mouth. Wow. If you're a duck lover, this is an absolute must!! Forgot to add, the service is great too. came here for dinner with my sister, ordered veggie spring rolls, thai iced tea and Pad Kee Mao. spring rolls were good but didn't have any vegetables in them, just rice noodles... my thai iced tea was okay, but baan thai's is better. and saving the worst for last, my pad kee mao with tofu was so spicy it was inedible.. the menu says spicy with (mild-medium) in the description, but it was the spiciest thing i've ever eaten, and i truly enjoy spicy food. i couldn't even taste the dish it was so spicy. i was expecting big portion sizes for the price, but it was average. the server was rude and short, didn't come to ask how things were, and felt like she was annoyed with us being there. there was only 1 other table eating when we got there and a few delivery drivers picking up orders. i was so excited to try this place, but i won't be returning. read more

I've spent a lot of time in Thailand and I can honestly say, this is my favourite Thai restaurant outside of the country. Always good and polite service. This is not an upmarket place. However, all the ingredients are fresh and tasty . It is small and family run. It is worth a detour to visit. We had a very acceptable spicy and sour shrimp soup , pineapple and chicken rice, and red beef curry. All in, including a decent tip, the bill came to less than $50 for two. read more

You get the best value for your money when you go during lunch for the lunch specials. The food is not North Americanized and taste like authentic Thai food. It tastes exactly like the flavours of when I visited Thailand. The prices for the food are reasonable and the portions are quite good too. I have not done take out here but the table service is very good (despite only having 1 or two waitresses). The wait staff are kind and very efficient. I highly recommend this place. The only downside with this location is that it's not wheel chair accessible. This place is perfect if you want to host party. Excellent!!! I am a Thai and I can tell you that this restaurant cooks very authentic Thai food. We ordered Stir Fried Basil (noodles and fried rice style dishes), mussamun curry, Tom Kha chicken soup, fish cakes, bamee with barbecue pork, pad thai, shu chee salmon (red curry), garlic spear ribs, and seafood salad. Either that or its customers have never been exposed to any other Thai cuisine before in their lives, which is possible, due to the obscure location of this restaurant. A group of 6 of us enjoyed an excellent supper here. We shared two appetizers, one salad, and 5 main dishes, leaving enough take-home leftovers for another meal. The portions were not huge but quite adequate. The Goong Sarong appetizer was tasty, but a little too much deep-fried wrapper for me. I really enjoyed the peanut sauce on the Satay Gai, which was a little more substantial than the above. The salad, Larb Gai, was quite spicy and unlike any I've had, laced as it was with many Thai herbs. Interesting! We had two pad thai's, the #43 with prawns and #67, Pad Thai Pak, with tofu, eggs, shallot, tamarind etc. Both great. Perfect consistency. The Pad Phed Tao Hoo also contained tofu, eggplant, green beans, and several herbs in a red curry sauce: delish! It was fairly mild though rated as H(ot). The Gang Kiew Wann (green curry), with eggplant, red pepper, and basil, was more creamy than green, but very tasty. The ginger beef was less crispy than the Chinese variety, and I liked it better; I did not find it tough. The service was excellent and friendly. Our group was the only one there for a while, which was surprising given the excellent food. I would happily return when I next visit Victoria. read more

I agree 100% with Josh V below. Based on what we ordered there is no way anyone who has eaten real Thai food prepared properly could rate this more than a three star. It is bland and mostly tasteless. The pad Thai which people rate so good did not even have one ounce of spice in it. It really tasted of nothing. The spring rolls had an odd aftertaste. We love Thai food and the Green Elephant holds its own very nicely. That being said, this good restaurant is about average for the genre, and hence the three star rating. Yum!!! Seriously. I have eaten at a lot of Thai places and this one tops them all! They have such great flavour and the portion sizes are good. Also being vegetarian I am often nervous about Asian places having fish sauce in all their dishes but this one has plenty of options. Unfortunately for us, our visit with two other couples last Fri. night, was a big disappointment, not so much for the food but for the lack of caring service. Having arrived on time for a 6:15 p.m. reservation, we never expected that we'd face a 1 1/2 hour wait for the food to arrive at our table. In fact, about one hour following our arrival, we were told that they were busy following the closure for vacation and that we'd have to wait at least another 15 minutes. They also indicated that they were not short of staff thereby decreasing our sense of sympathy. Meanwhile, a steady stream of take-out customers arrived and received their orders throughout our wait. Noticing that other tables too had received no food, we concluded that this place is more interested in serving their regular take-out clientele, while hoping that those of us at the tables will keep ordering drinks as some seemed to be doing ... as they wait, and wait and wait. By the time the food arrived, we were so hungry that anything would have tasted good. The fact that there was really no apology or acknowlegement (e.g. complimentary drink, desert, etc. offered) for the excessive delay simply left a bad taste with respect to what initially seemed to have had potential for a positive dining experience In sum, for our party of six, the "Green Elephant" turned out to be a white elephant. Got our first dish less than 5 mins after we ordered, the tom kha, and it was super yumm, even their mushrooms were flavourful how did they do that?? I got my standby pad thai, and my husband got his standby curry, and we were both delighted and thought that it's superior to almost every other thai place that we've been to, in victoria and in vancouver. My wife and I have just ordered out from the Thai Green Elephant. We were amazed at how good the food was. Driving home I almost pulled over to snack it smelled so good. We ordered the Ginger Beef (85) coconut sauce was so creamy and delicious. It will be a regular order for us. The Pad Krapao (70) beans were cook great. Nice and crispy in a very tasty sauce. The Gang Karee (51) was very similar to what we get from Little Thai but it was much thicker and a deeper flavor. The Bamee Pad Nam Prik Pow (45) was very good. Veggies kept crispy against a soft noodle. Sorry Little Thai Restaurant but this is our new Thai restaurant. read more

I once ate here when the previous restaurant existed and it was less than good, so I have been reluctant to visit the new business. (I also know how dumb that is). Last night my man friend and I gambled and tried it out. We ordered the dinner for two and it was actually fantastic. The food was super tasty and the presentation on the first course was really nice. The server was really attentive and adorable, and at one point, the cook came from the kitchen to check on his handy work. All in all, a really great experience. I'll definitely be back. read more

I am allergic to fish and shellfish so I like that they mark the items on the menu with allergens, but I wish they had more flexibility to modify dishes (not put in the shrimp paste/fish sauce/etc). We ordered from this restaurant a few days ago when family was visiting from out of town. We asked the person on the phone to recommend a few dishes to us and we ordered those. All of the dishes were just ok in our opinion and one in particular, the duck dish, was extremely dry and not very appealing in general. We all found that for what we got, it was very expensive.
