I had the worst experience I've had in a long time tonight at this restaurant. We arrived at about 6:30 and got a seat. It took a while before we could even get our order in, but once we did, we waited, no joke an hour and a half for our food. We kept asking if our food was coming soon, and we were told over and over again, "It's being made right now!", and "Almost done!" The table next to us ordered right before we did, and they were, no joke, FINISHED EATING before our food came out. It was curry and papaya salad. How hard is this to make? Don't they prep it ahead of time? We got no courtesy discount or anything for the amount of time it took. On our way out, we overheard that a huge take-out order had come in right around the time we ordered, and that that had backed up the kitchen. This is such bullsh*t. There are people literally sitting in your dining room and you make then wait for over 90 minutes while you cook take-out orders??? I will NEVER go to this place again. I barely ever write reviews. It has to be amazing or awful for me to take the time to do one of these. This qualifies as awful. read more

What a gem of a restaurant. We were wowed! We went to dinner around 5:30 on a Sunday and were able to get street parking right smack out front. Hurray! It's a small space and we were glad we were early -- within 10 minutes every chair was full and people were waiting out the door. The appetizers appeared pricey until you saw they were shareable for a party of four. Even the soups were shareable. We had a little of everything from vegetarian dishes to the pork larb (was told it was fantastic) to the Mussels Frites (think Poutine with Mussels). Everyone was triple pleased with their food. Service was friendly and the cook is the owner who took over from her mom. Prices were reasonable. Look no further than My Thai Cafe if you're craving some great food. read more

On our visit to Victoria, we were looking to have some papaya salad and without many choices, we found this place. The co-owner Jared was a very friendly and gracious host. We ordered a few dishes they Nom Tokyo, chicken red curry and the papaya salad that we had been looking for. We order it all Thai Hot as we like it spicy the food was absolutely delicious and spicy (not as hot as we like but will do.. lol). This was a great place to eat in a nice neighborhood. We've tried several Thai restaurants in Victoria and this little place stands head and shoulders above the others. I formerly gave it five stars and there's no reason to change that. The food is outstanding which, after all, is the mark of a restaurant. The servings are large which pleases us because we like to take some home. The affable owner, Jared, works the front and his co-owner wife is the chef. As I said before, we shall return. read more

My go to thai place when I need good , authentic thai food. The service is always great and the food is even better. Every dish that we have ordered has been amazing and you can taste the freshness in every bite. I feel like some thai places use pastes or something because whenever I get a green curry anywhere else it just makes me feel like I can make it at home, but when I eat here that thought never enters my mind. AND THEN ... they added a duck poutine. I am guessing this isn't authentic thai food, but when you can combine curry and poutine I don't even care! read more

Ah eating out in the pre-COVID-19 era... how long ago that was (not as long as I've been neglecting my food . My second time at @mythaicafe_victoria was better than my first, and started with a vegan friendly white onion broth. The flavour is light and peppery, with some nice added texture from the vegetables, tofu and vermicelli. The Gaeng Massaman Gai, a coconut massaman curry, was also quite good - the sav nicely coupled with the peanuts, which added some depth to the flavour as well as a bit of crunch. The vegetables were also fresh, and their flavours still came out without being overpowered by the curry. The chicken was a little dry, but still acceptable. The spring roll was appropriately hot, with a nice crispy wrap that was not too thick. Overall this was an enjoyable lunch at a great local diner. Again, please note this was before our new era of self-isolation began, but if you're stuck at home (as most of should be these days), don't want to cook, and are comfortable with it, do give this place a go, because as of this writing they are still offering take out. Hopefully, though, we'll be able to dine in again before long! read more

Jared, the owner, is one of the sweetest person! The entire time we were there, the hospitality was great. We ordered the Tom Yum, Tom Ka, Papaya Salad, Pad Thai, and Green Curry. I'm super sad to write this review as I wanted to try them... but I feel like I have to! We made an order on Sunday night at 8:15pm for two dishes (Chicken Currey and Pad Thai), we were told it would be a 35 min wait, so pick-up was agreed for 8:50pm. I arrived and the waitress yelped. She forgot to place in our order. I thought ok, it's not a problem, I will have to wait as everything else is closing at 9pm. I waited for about 5 mins and then the waitress comes to ask me what meat I wanted, the chef seemed to be marinating chicken. I told her Chicken just like the order. She comes back in 1 minute later (after talking to the chef) saying that they were all sold out of Chicken. It was total BS as I saw the chef with chicken moments ago. I really think it was just their way out of not fulfilling our order as they wanted to close and clean. I get that and get mistakes happen. I just thought it was super not cool to not own up to their mistake. Also not to apologize and offer so sort of rain check for tomorrow. I left super quickly as I was super sad that this happened. If you are a Thai food lover, you have to check this place out! They serve the most authentic Thai food that I have found in Canada so far! :) I highly recommend the cashew chicken. The spicing of this dish took me right back to Thailand. Also, if you are wanting to pair a drink with your meal, be sure to get a Singha for the real experience. read more

The best Thai food I've ever had! I have tried other places, and they are weak comparisons. I have tried a few different items from the menu, and I have never been disappointed. Tonight we ordered Beef Penang, Green Curry Pork, and Pad Kraprow Chicken. All were ordered 'medium spiced' but all were very, very mild. For Thailand-style normal (some dishes are spicer than others) - based on this review/experience, ordering 'hot' will not be too hot. Penang Beef - it was quite mild, but had authentic flavour and good texture. Green Curry Pork - Also very mild but was very rich. It would be nice if they used more 'Thai' veggies in it, like the mini (pea sized) aubergine, but overall it was decent green curry. What really pulled the rating down was the Pad Krapau Chicken, it did not resemble it, not even slightly (read my review for Sookjai, it was comparable). Really disappointed in that dish. I can't figure out why the Thai restaurants in Victoria are making this bizarro Chinese-style version of this dish - it's terrible! I live nearby so I will probably go back for more for either green curry or penang but would order both hot in order for it to be on par with a mild-medium spiced curry you'd get in thailand. You couldn't pay me to order pad kraprow here again. The atmosphere in the restaurant is cute and cozy. There was one server, so he was busy doing everything, but very friendly. Prices seemed average for Thai food in Victoria (about 12$ per dish). read more

Went there for an early dinner this wknd. Yelp doesn't say what time they open, so we got there around 4:45pm and saw that they open at 5pm. That was fine with us, there were lots of shops to browse in the neighborhood, so we walked around, on a nice sunny day, and walked back almost 10 mins after 5pm. A guy was standing at the door and said that they're running late, and they're opening late. We're like, oh okay, when? expecting maybe just a few mins. and he said, in 20 minutes. Also, they were pretty nonchalant about opening half an hour later than stated, plus they didn't invite us in for a cup of tea, or spring rolls, or ANYTHING. they didn't seem like they cared to have our business,so we went somewhere else for food (Victoria is a small city after all), and had food in our tummies way less than 20 mins later :) Giving them 3 stars since we didn't have their food, though if I were to just judge their service, it would be meh. read more

Really, really solid. Went on a sunday night and it was packed including multiple take out orders. The single server and single cook kept up amazingly well, all things considered. The food was quite good, authentic with a touch of westernization. I'd argue the pad thai was a bit sweeter than I would have hoped, but they made up for it by actually hitting the "high" level of spice I asked for. The red curry was really solid (#32), and jasmine rice spot on. It made me really want to go back and try a coconut milk based curry and the tom yum. Price was more than fair at $13/dish and portion sizes were above average. In Victoria, you can't ask for much more than what My Thai is offering; good portions, fair prices, well above average food and staff that actually seem to give a damn. Overall: Since moving here I've always complained about how Victoria generally has absolutely TERRIBLE Asian restaurants (Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, etc.) so imagine my surprise when I was recommended this super authentic Thai place just down the road from me! I love this place and I can't give them enough praise! The previous owners recently passed the place down to their daughter; she and her partner have fully renovated the restaurant into a cozy and chic space that isn't anything like the hokey and cliched interiors that plague some of the other Thai restaurants in town. Food tastes pretty much just like it does in Thailand and if you like spice, they're more than happy to turn the heat up a few notches for you! I've been back to this place fairly frequently over the past few months with and without others and I can safely say that they've earned my regular business. Despite their name, the Mai Tai is unfortunately not on their drink menu. Food: Closest to thing to the Thai experience you'll get. Everything I've had so far is really good and that includes: Spring Rolls, Pad Thai, Tom Kha, Papaya Salad, and every curry. The North American palate trends towards favouring sweet things and thus many Thai places in Canada and the USA inundate their dishes with sugar but this place doesn't do that and instead focuses on the actual flavours you should be tasting in their cooking. I like my food to be really spicy and it isn't common for me to go to a place in Victoria that can meet that expectation. Luckily, their highest advertised spice level is close to what I want and all I do is ask for just a bit more to give it the heat that I desire. Interior: A nicely laid out interior with a fair amount of seating despite the relatively small space. It's hard to describe but it cute and modern but in a quirky way. Either way, it's clean and always smells of freshly made foods. Given how small the place is, there is only one bathroom so you'll have to time your trips accordingly. Cost: Great price for what you're getting, their lunch specials are a steal but even their dinners won't run you into the red. Expect maybe ~$15 per person, more if you eat a lot like I do. Serving sizes are reasonable. Service: I've never had anything less than stellar service here. Super friendly and I am made to feel very much at home. Hours: They're open during the day on most days but close fairly early (~9pm). The only thing I want from them is to extend their opening hours but maybe I'm being a little too greedy. read more

I am calling it! Best Thai lunch in town with respect to price and value. Extremely tasty Massaman curry - see my photo. I have eaten here a number of times over the past 3 years and they're better at lunch than any one. Caveat - their curry and rice dishes are superior to their noodle dishes such as Pad Thai. When we saw the 4 star reviews and pictures, we were initially excited to eat here. My hubby and I ordered a pork nom tok and beef larb and was not really impressed with the flavor. We were visiting Victoria for the weekend. Found this little amazing restaurant walking distance from our hotel. Every dish was super delicious. The service was amazing. The owners ( husband & wife) were friendly hosts. Their Mussman Curry, Pad Thai dish were insanely delicious. This place has been consistently good throughout the years. I often order the noodle or curry dishes and find them to be stellar. It's a very small place, a hole in the wall, but it's charming and has outdoor seating too.  The food is really great, and tastes exactly like what I ate in Thailand. I came here for lunch around 1 on a Saturday, and it wasn't busy at all. We were quickly seated and the server was polite. The lunch specials were reasonably priced. The portion sizes were good; However, the food was mediocre...The Thai tea was pretty good but the Pad Thai and Tom Yum soup was bland, especially the tom yum. The curry was too salty. If you want some really good Thai food, I would suggest skipping this place. Other than that, it's a quick and cheap place to eat for lunch. read more

We are visiting from California and stumbled upon this gem on our drive. Best Thai food we have ever had. If I could give 10 stars to this place I would. Customer service is exceptional. My food that i ordered I had it at "hot" level for spicy ness and it turned out to be super hot for me to handle and they don't have desserts on the menu but the owner/host was so gracious that he went in and made me iced tea to cut down the spiciness. I have been going here since coming to Victoria five years ago. This is really good Thai cooking in a homey atmosphere. I cook some Thai dishes myself. Victoria tastes lend towards the bland so order the highest level of heat here - it's the tastiest. Also tell the server you are not afraid of lemon grass; many westerners hate this acquired taste. On our walk today we stopped for a lunch in My Thai Cafe, and could not have been happier with our choice. It is a very friendly place, the husband & wife owners care greatly about their little authentic restaurant, and the dishes were fresh and simply delicious. Ordered the Yum Soon Sen with tofu (medium spice) which was pretty good except it was extremely spicy, more than what I'd consider medium. I enjoy spicy food but this just burned my mouth. Also the ingredients weren't quite as described on the menu. Still overall lots of freshness and texture, and tasty once the large pieces of hot pepper were removed. read more

The food was great. However, we ate in and were very disappointed. The restaurant was heated by one baseboard heater, which didn't seem to be doing much of a difference. The place was freezing cold, must have been only a few degrees warmer then outside (I'm not exaggerating). The service was terrible. The waitress wasn't very cheery and she took forever to come to the table to take our order, even though we were the only occupied table in the restaurant. The food took a while to come too, although when you're freezing cold perhaps time moves slower. All in all, not impressed. I'd only ever get take out from here and I'd be sure to phone ahead well in advance so that I didn't have to wait around for 15-20 mins in the freezing cold restaurant, like the 3 people who were there for pick up while we were eating. read more
