I have only left about two yelp reviews in my whole life. But I am frustrated enough with this place and the service I received to write one. I got my hair braided by Babacar on Friday, June 28. I wanted small human hair box braids. A few days before my appointment, I texted him and asked if I could have two braiders at once because of an injury which makes it hard for me to sit for long periods of time. He said yes. On the day of our appointment, about two hours in, it became clear that his second braider was not coming. A couple hours after that, I mentioned that while I agreed but he was braiding fast, I still asked for two braiders because of the immense pain I was in. Then he blew up at me. He kept saying over and over that he was getting mad and getting pissed off and saying that he was going fast. I agreed, but I said but the whole job would be even faster if we had had two people like I asked for. Then he called me a liar and said that He never would have agreed to two braiders. When I pulled up our text conversation to show him (screenshot attached), he refused to look and told me to get my phone away from him. He then spent about 10 minutes ranting solidly about the situation and how mad he was and that sort of thing. I just dropped it because I did not like how aggressive he was becoming. That day was 16 days ago. It is now Saturday, July 14th, and I had to take all of my braids out. During the last 16 days, I have lost about 20% of my braids. They were just slipping out or unraveling way too easily. I have been getting the same exact type of braids for 20 years, and losing one or two braids here and there is normal, but I was losing a lot. And in the middle of my head, they were a lot fatter and not properly tied off like they were supposed to be. I have uploaded a photo of a few of the braids to show how the fully braided and tied off braids were still in tact and neat, meaning they just slid out. I also included a video in the main section showing how easily they come out. I just called Babacar to explain the situation and see if some sort of partial refund or credit could be given. He told me that in his 22 years of braiding, not one client has ever complained about braids falling out. He said that he is not a machine (?), And that when I left the shop, the braids were fine. He said that clearly I had done something to make them all fall out. When he asked exactly which customer I was, I reminded him that I was the one who asked for two braiders. When he realized it was me, he told me that he had been waiting for me to call to start a fight about something. I spent $200 getting my hair braided and $300 on the hair. Why on earth would I waste $500 after 2 weeks just to complain about something? Even if I got a partial refund, I'm still the one suffering and taking the financial loss since I had to remove all my braids! The call ended abruptly, I'm not sure if he hung up on me. I have dealt with all sorts of personalities in my extensive history of getting my hair braided, but Babacar was so rude, hostile, insensitive, and unprofessional. It was my birthday yesterday and I actually went to get my hair done! I ended up getting Senegalese twists at regular length. Marie did my hair with help from Aja. Omg it looks gorgeous!! I'm incredibly happy with the fabulous work they did. It took 8 hours but it was worth it. I could tell she was being precise and it turned out to be absolute perfection. While it is a bit tight that's to be expected especially if I want them to last. I didn't even need to take a pain pill. Flawless! Everyone is super friendly and there were plenty of people for me to chit chat with which helped. Tips: Park across the street in the Walmart shopping center. Have somewhat of an idea of what you want. Expect to be there a majority of the day. If you want nice hair this is to be expected. Today was my first experience at Babacar's and I am absolutely thrilled with my experience! The salon is beautiful, well maintained and comfortable. The staff was warm, friendly, professional and welcoming. They do a good job of making you feel "at home." I've worn various braid styles for about 7 years but I'm not originally from the L.A. as I moved here about 3 years ago. I've struggled to find a place that I liked as much as my salon in Chicago but today I think I found it! My experience started when I originally made my appointment. I had called around 7 or 8 AM on a Saturday morning fully expecting to leave a message and just hope for a return call. But Babacar answered the phone immediately, quoted me a fair price without hesitation or haggling and set my appointment for the following Saturday morning. I arrived for my appointment and the staff greeted me right away. They let me know the braider was on the way which was totally acceptable. The braider (forgive me - I don't recall her name) arrived and got started right away. She worked straight through with little breaks and she completed a full set of micro braids in 5 hours. The braids are very well done and she even braided some of that very short hair that I had in the back after wearing a tapered cut for the past several months. Her work is exquisite and I think I noticed that she didn't use glue to seal but rather "tied off" each braid. I hoping to upload pictures later but suffice it to say she did a wonderful job. Was recommended this place by a friend and was very very disappointed by results. I paid 220 for knotless braids and the style I asked for was ignored by stylist who agreed to do it. At the end I was told she can't actually do it and she made no apologies or excuse as to why. Further inspection shows the braids aren't even knotless but the braids are literally sitting off my head away from my scalp and are now pulling my hair and scalp. I spoke with the owner who admitted to his sisters wrongs and offered a discount. I called again later to complain again about the braids not even being knotless when the braider answered and hung up once she realized who I was. I am extremely disappointed in the shop and will never patron again. The pics show what I asked vs what I got and the roots of the braids taken not even a week after they were done. I called and spoke with Babacar and found him to be very professional and knowledgeable about the style I wanted (Individual Tree Braids). He booked me a appointment that fit my schedule. I scheduled an appointment with this place for 9:30 a.m. today (6.28.2016), after going to meet with them TWICE for a consultation. I spoke with Babacar before my appointment today and was assured someone would be there ON TIME when I got there. I arrived on time, in good spirit and just happy to be there. I was greeted by a woman that confirmed she was there to braid my hair. I took my baby to the potty and when we returned a woman was in my chair, with my scheduled braider consulting with her on what type of braids SHE would be installing in her hair! Say what now?? I walked over and asked her "aren't you the woman that was scheduled to braid my hair?" to which she got curt and replied "I called, and someone else will be braiding you because they braid faster." Funny, the tight lipped, frowned faced bitch didn't tell me anything BEFORE I asked. She just had me sitting there, watching her consult with another client, while my on-time behind sat in a chair waiting to be served. I was told this would be between 6-7 hours and I had my 3.5 years old with me. I would have had her picked up later, but that was besides the point. It was now 10 a.m. and NO ONE had started on my head. Hashtag UNPROFESSIONAL and CLASSLESS. First she told me another woman would be braiding me and then she said Babacar would do it. By 10:20 a.m. someone, other than another client, finally walked in-a man, I'm assuming was Babacar. However, this man NEVER introduced himself to me nor did he apologize for having me WAIT so long for a braider. He walked in, said hello to everyone there and went straight to the back of the room. NEVER saying 'I'll be with you in a moment' or anything! He finally came back to the front of the shop after about 7 minutes of doing whatever in the back. But he still NEVER came over to me, by that time I was done/pissed and over it. It was now around 10:37 a.m. I gathered my belongings, put my scarf on my head and EXITED the building. The only reason why I didn't give them a stern and thorough cursing out for wasting my time and money (in petrol) is because I had my child with me. So I decided to go back to Babacar to get my two year old daughters hair braided. As you can see in the pic, she has very little hair and head lol. I contacted Babacar just a few days after he finished my amazing twists, to see if he could do my daughters. He reassured me that he could give her an appointment for 5:30, and that the cost would be no more than $40, since she is only a toddler. I get to the shop early and Babacar is not there, no problem. His amazing stylist Fatu was going to do my baby's hair. I asked for a two layer cornrow style with beads on the end (no hair added). A hairstyle that took under an hour and a half. They had to contact Babacar on the phone to see what they were going to charge me, and he says $60 because it is a time consuming hairstyle?!. Now I just stated that I spoke with Babacar days earlier AND the day of, and he told me no more than $40, even after hearing I was going to add beads prior to the appointment (which he said is an extra charge). Now I was upset with that alone, but now he wanted to say that, he doesn't really do kids, and he was just saying yes to appease a new customer. WOW. There are thousands of kid braiders in LA, I could of easily went to someone else since he "doesn't really do kids". If he really felt this way, why not communicate this, so I can find someone else, and enjoy this experience at another place with my daughter. He continued to retract everything he said once I got on the phone with him and told him everything he had told me just the day before. He basically told me he could do my daughters hair for $40, but it needs to be a much simpler hairstyle. Two layers is pretty simple if you ask me, but then again who am I. Thankfully the stylist braiding my daughters hair, Fatu, was able to work with me, and boy was I SATISFIED! My daughter sat there with no problem (and maybe a few lollipops) while Fatu braided her hair to perfection. My daughter has a bald spot in the back of her head, and you can't even tell, because Fatu snatched it up so well! My daughters hair has never looked better!!!! I gave five stars on my first review for my twist done by Babacar, but I have now retracted it to three because of such poor communication and customer service with Babacar. I haven't wore braids in at least eight years. I am an executive and I was concerned about braids looking "professional" but I really needed a break. After reading the reviews on several shops, I called Babacar for an appointment. I was able to get one right away and when I arrived he was on time and ready to go. I felt very comfortable with Babacar. Besides not being used to sitting for so long any more, it was a very pleasant experience. When I used to get my hair braided it hurt. This wasn't the case at all. I was so comfortable I actually fell asleep! My twists are absolutely gorgeous and shiny. It's only been three days and they are already loose so I've started practicing styling them. I love them and I'm no longer worried about how they will look at work. *Please Read* Like most women, I have been to many hair salons but going to this salon ranks as one of the worst experiences I've ever had. To begin, I arrived at 845a for my 9am appointment but wasn't touch by the braider  (who I later learned was Babacar) until almost 10. Another client arrived shortly after for her 11am appointment but wasn't seen until 3pm. I will spare you the details of the disrespect and discomfort I endured during the 12 ...yes 12 hours it took to get medium segalese twists! The owner bad- mouthed other clients as they left (ironically in English), criticizing everything from the amount of their tip to the condition of their hair. I too was charged a different price from what I was quoted, and judging from the other reviews this is common practice for this salon. Please don't let my agony be in vain. I write this as I sit here at my second visit to Babacar's. This is my second time getting Senegalese twist. I wouldn't have returned if the quality of the work that the ladies did was anything less than exceptional. They are accommodating and work to meet your request. For instance, I called Babacar on a Wednesday night and requested a Friday appointment. He immediately set up my appoinment short notice. I couldn't ask for a better experience. The environment is pleasant. The braiders are always involved in lively conversations. Even though the language barrier is present, I still enjoy it and I'm not offended. I never feel as if they're bad mouthing me in another language. (The nail shop ladies are a different story lol) The salon is beautiful. I went to the previous location the first time I came. But when I walked into the new location, I was completely taken by surprise! It's beautifully coordinated and you can even do a little shopping if you're in the mood to. Like I mentioned, I get the Senegalese twist. I get them small and right above waist length. They're pricing goes according to size and length (I.e. The smaller and longer you want them, the more expensive it will be). Braids in themselves are expensive but it's certainly worth every last dime. If you're looking for quality braids, you've found your spot. Five different people assisted with my hair and it still appears as if one person did it. You can't get any better than that. So I was searching for a great braider and I am so glad I stumbled upon Babacar's African Braids. I called Babacar and scheduled my appointment for Saturday July 26th at 8 am. Fyi there is construction on Crenshaw Blvd across the street from the mall. Parked in the mall and walked on over to the shop. OK the shop where they braid your hair is very small. I mean like the size of a studio apartment and then cut that in half. So if you are claustrophobic this may not be where you would want to go. Oh and let me not forget there is no air conditioning. It did get hot in the little room, but it is well worth it! I would suggest bring a small fan or something. When I walked in the shop I was greeted by three lovely ladies whom I assume are related to Babacar somehow. I choose the size of braids I wanted and even what color hair I wanted. Oh yes ladies he provides the braiding hair at an extra cost. I believe I was charged $2 per pack of hair. The brand of the hair is called Amazing. Just your regular braiding hair if you ask me. I wanted really long braids which sit just above my butt. She ended up using 12 packs because I had long braids. I got there at 8 am and left at 6:30 pm. Yes, God blessed me with a large thick head of hair. So I did what anyone else who gets braids does which was pack a lunch, snacks, water, books, extra phone charger, and anything else I could bring to help me endure the long braiding process. In the beginning I was a little bummed because Babacar did not personally do my hair, but after sitting there and seeing everyone else progress it really didn't matter who did my hair. Each braider braids the same. My braids look like perfectly manufactured braids. I am not by no means tender headed so I didn't feel as though my braids were super tight. Now the first day they were a little snug, but that is to be expected. I have nothing but great things to say about Babacar and his shop. Everyone who worked at the shop was extremely nice. I'm so glad I didn't let the negative reviews deter me from coming here. I will only come to Babacar's African Braids for all of my braiding needs. Wish I could give zero stars. Worst experience at a "salon" that I've ever had. Completely unprofessional. They were very late for my appointment then it took 9 hours to do what they said would take 4(it takes my mom 4 and she's not a professional like they claim to be). It was just a few cornrows and crotchet. They kept passing me around from hair stylist to stylist. I started with Babacar, who took a phone call while doing my hair and starting speaking very loudly on the phone, in my ear while yelling at whoever that was. The last woman that was finishing putting in the crotchet kept messing up and catching my hair because she was too distracted with her conversation with someone else. Never again. read more

While my Senegalese twists look pretty, the braiding experience was excruciating. I left an 8:30am appointment at 8:05pm. After three trips to the beauty supply and four different people worked on my hair. What should have been a 5 hour, maybe 8 pack of hair job took 11 packs and 11 hours. I was literally holding twists that were being pulled in two different directions because it was so painful. I watched one client, who had driven over three hours for her appointment, sit and wait over 3 hours for her braider to start on her style. I'm told that when I left, I was made a mockery of (discussed and belittled in front of everyone) because I didn't add substantial gratuity. For what?!! My day being completely tied up?! The terrific migraine?! Why would it take 4 people longer to twist my hair than one person?! I won't even get into the incessant, loud talking and meal break. And I'm popping ibuprofen like crazy to manage my aching scalp. I will NEVER patronize this establishment again, and I'll be sure to use my platforms to inform folks about my experience. Way to go Babacar!!! I visited this salon at its new location near the Crenshaw mall for the 1st time on 3/16/2014. I wanted to get my 9yr old daughters hair braided in box braids. I showed up about 15min early, and was seen about 15min late (not a problem for me), He and his assistants did a fantastic job on my daughters hair. I took about 9hrs, but thats only because it was a little painful for her and she needed breaks. To minimize this pain, Babacar had only one person working on her head from that point, and his assistant made sure not to braid tight. They were so gentle with her and caring. The asked her if she needed anything every hour and allowed her to take breaks. Originally there were to people working on her head, and had that continued, I'm sure it would have taken less than 5hours.---but kids must feel comfortable or they'll never want to do it again.
