A fine little sister to its Mercer Street outpost, the L.E.S. Babeland may lack the space of the SoHo location, but everything you want is still there! Still, when I was looking for a specific bottle of Sliquid I like, the smaller space confounded me as one of the usual friendly and helpful staff members inadvertently blocked the whole lube / condom section off with another customer. Why? She was rightfully telling her why there are a million better lubes out there than Astroglide, despite said customer's gynecologist's recommendation that it's all she and her boyfriend should use. I visited this location about three years back with my now husband. It was my first visit to a store of this nature. I worked in the neighborhood and had walked past it a few times when suddenly I decided on a whim to go here one day with my then boyfriend (now husband). The decor itself was light and airy and didn't feel seedy at all. I wasn't embarrassed to be here. The staff was very knowledgeable and professional, treating our transactions as just another day at work. There was a nice variety of items for every different taste and the staff didn't get upset or bat an eyelash whenever someone wished to be hands on with some of the merchandise. I guess this would be considered a good shop for a beginner. Sex toys and novelty items. I'm honestly shocked to see this place has good reviews. The customer service at the DMV is better, which is saying a lot. I'd honestly rather buy lube & a butt plug from someone at the DMV. The employees at the Rivington & Mercer location stand behind the register talking, once in a while throwing a dirty look your way if they acknowledge the customers at all. When they brought it back from the back the plastic rapping around it was really cheap like 99 cent store cheep. When I first walked in, I saw three ladies whose combined age must be around 180. In other words, they were all the retirement or nearly there set. And somehow, it still wasn't strange or awkward.
