I don't know how I forgot about this place but I remembered today! So I returned with hubby and kids. Hubby and son got the Nashville hot biscuit with a side of honey. They loved it! My daughter had the sausage egg and cheese croissant and I had the bacon and egg croissant. Hubby got an old fashioned donut and a cinnamon roll to eat with his Carmel latte. This is my girlfriend and I's go to spot for breakfast anytime we are on the square. We always get the honey butter chicken biscuit with the strawberry lemonade matcha. I also love the fresh donuts they always have, they have such a wide variety to choose from. The ambiance is decent as well. However, some of the couches could use an upgrade. Furthermore, I found the service to be just okay. On one occasion, I was waiting longer than usual for my order and when I asked about the time, they said "oh wait what did you get?" And then already had my order ready but didn't call my name for some reason which was irritating. After that, another customer went up and asked a question to which they said "oh we're pretty busy, so your order is gonna take a while." I understand that places can get busy, but at least push to let the customer know that you are working on it and not shrug them off. read more

This is a cute little spot across the street from a brunch place we were waiting for a table for. Ambience is cute and contemporary and the donuts all look delectable and the staff is kind. We ordered the fruity pebbles doughnut, the brown sugar, cinnamon latte, and the glazed cronut. Everything exceeded our expectations and they're probably one of the freshest donuts we've ever had. Unfortunately, I only got to visit twice before moving back to Dallas, but every time I'm in San Marcos, I make it a point to stop by. This past graduation weekend, I had the chance to visit again and introduce my friends to this gem. I ordered my favorite, the Nashville Hot Chicken Biscuit, while they tried the Cinnamon Donut. Admittedly, my friends weren't fans of the biscuit, saying the chicken was too thick and the biscuit a bit dry--but I love it for those exact reasons! As for the Cinnamon Donut? Absolute perfection, and I'm not even a big donut person. It was too good that we had to come back and get another one before our trip ride back to Dallas. I also had the pleasure of meeting one of the owners, Kevin, who was so fun and kind. The service was friendly, and the vibe is super laidback. Was in San Marcos for a football game and Babe's was recommended to us from bartender at Zelick's Icehouse down the street. The service was excellent and the 2 guys behind the counter were friendly and attentive. As it was late in the morning one of the guys gave us an assortment of doughnuts and pastries for free! The hot buttered chicken biscuit was fantastic and the donut holes were equally as well. Parking can be tight but we got lucky and found a spot right in front. The glazed donuts taste like your less than mediocre glazed donut.. my copassengers thought it was ok though. No complaints from them. The bear claw is phenomenal. The apples are tart and juicy, but covered in a blanket of cinnamon sugar. The oreo was softened by the glaze. Not so successful. Maple bacon donut was successful. The service was satisfactory--they forgot about us, but gave us a free donut, but later learned that they forgot to add that one to our order. Our family visited Babes for the first time and was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food. I have gone all over the country trying lots of different kinds of donuts--some yeasty, some heavy, some potato (shoutout to Holy Donut in Portland ME), some overly sweet, some bland, some greasy etc. But I have NEVER had a donut as pillowy and airy as the one at Babes. It wasnt too sweet or even greasy. I have no idea how they do it, but it was what every donut should be and more. I ate a fruity pebbles one expecting sweet and heavy, but I could have eaten a few more and not felt like I was weighed down. They dont have a lot of choices, but even a simple donut hole will amaze. We also had the breakfast sandwiches on biscuits and croissants and those were really good too at a very reasonable price for size and quality which is scarce these days. And the Americano was great (2 shots for only $3 and change). The only cons are the tables were sticky and there isnt great signage so we walked past it twice. My wife's been "jonesing" for some Babe's donuts after reading about the place on a recent Impact magazine article. So much so that she was losing sleep thinking about it. I finally relented and we went there early Saturday morning on Easter weekend. We got there around 7:20 AM (they're supposed to open at 7:00 AM) and the lights weren't quite turned on. My wife had to walk over and she saw someone inside who told her their donuts weren't quite ready. Fine...we were going to order croissant sandwiches anyway and can wait on sweets. So we placed our orders for croissants with bacon, egg and cheese and a couple of regular coffees. Imagine our chagrin when our freshly made sandwiches were delivered and we were told coffee wasn't ready! What?!! Babe's Doughnuts and Coffee didn't have doughnuts nor coffee available! I was waiting to eat my sandwich until coffee was served...and waited...and waited. Finally, the lady behind the counter, perhaps sensing growing aggravation (I haven't had my coffee yet!) suggested cafe latte instead of coffee...and my wife readily agreed. The bacon, egg and cheese croissant sandwiches were warm and quite good. Flaky and fresh croissant with crispy bacon...nothing worse than biting into a non-crispy bacon and the entire bacon slice comes out. We also shared an apple fritter and it had a crispy exterior and not overly sweet. Taste-wise, this place garners at least 4 stars...but not having coffee (and donuts) available first thing is, in my humble opinion, an epic fail. Value isn't quite there either...the croissant sandwiches were $5.50 each. One of our go-to croissant sandwich places in Kyle charges $3.25 for sandwiches as good if not better than this. Pretty good! Have a nice and relaxed coffee shop vibe with some good selections. The veggie bowl was pretty good, but not amazing. It came with a fresh croissant. I also got a large, iced vanilla latte with almond milk. I was shocked, but the strength was good! I am a coffee snob and they're usually not strong enough. Only thing is, either there was too much flavor added or it didn't mix well. Verrry sweet. They do have some unusual coffee options on their menu. I had to try one of their yummy-looking donuts, so I opted for a kings cake one. Very good, but the cream cheese icing pretty much came off in the bag. Overall give this place a try! read more

Really nice little breakfast place, way more then just plain ol' coffee and donuts. First things first, the coffee. We ordered an Iced Vietnam, an Upside Down, and a Midnight Mocha. The coffee is super smooth and not bitter at all. The Iced Vietnam was hands down the best and I struggled to not just drink it really fast! The Mocha was a perfect balance of coffee and chocolate. The chocolate is house made so bonus points there! The donuts, we got a Boston, a Maple Bacon, and an Apple Fritter. Successes all the way around! The donuts were just the tiniest bit greasy but still good. Also got a Nashville Hot Chicken Biscuit and a Philly Steak and Eggs wrap. The wrap was FULL of steak and really hot (temp). It was very very good. The Nashville was a good solid spice but it did seem a little dry, there wasn't any extra sauce or condiment of any kind. I personally thought price was good.
