Good place for international food, good selection, friendly employees, a lot of can food and good selection of sausages

Cute little European deli sold me everything I needed for my authentic Polish sausage and sauerkraut Easter dinner. Delicious.

This was my first visit to Babushka's and I was blown away. The shelves in this small shop are immaculately packed with colorful jars of Eastern European preserves, fish and pickled products. There are cases full of interesting deli sausages, smoke fish and meats that you can't find in a grocery store. A case of cakes and assorted pastries called out to me. On the back wall, racks held interesting wines and hardy beers. You can find almost anything Eastern European in the shop, including a few gift items. Babushka's is not a traditional US style deli where you can order salads and sandwiches. It is very much a shop that sells prepackaged imported foods. We picked up a Baltic Porter stout beer from Poland and some stuffed golumpkis that were made in New York. Prices were reasonable for imported food products. The clerk was friendly and helpful. There's plenty of parking in the strip mall. read more

Despite its small size, the store boasts an extensive range of products. The lady working there is extremely pleasant. Their Baltika beer and chocolates are personal favorites of mine. However, I have noticed that some items were past their expiration dates. read more

I no finally made it to this sweet Eastern European food and gift shop and it did not disappoint. Had we not been loaded up Indian food from a few doors down with a full fridge of groceries at home, we probably would have left here with all sorts of treasures- next time! The space is very well organized and tidy with shelves of jams, pickled veggies, drinks and more. They have cooler and deli cases filled with meats, cheeses, desserts, Pelmeni, pierogis and more. They also offer a variety of baked goods like rugalech, poppyseed items and more. The staff was on the quiet side but our experience was short and straightforward. Went in on Sunday a few minutes before 4 pm. The hours on the store said till 5 pm. The minute we walk in the guy comes out and says he's closing in 3 minutes. No hello or sorry or excuse for closing early. My friend and I were so put off that we did a quick walk through of the store (no more than a minute) and left. I have been going toBabushka 's for years, long before I started reviewing for Yelp. A few years ago I relocated to the "Fort" and found that it was difficult to obtain European food and Russian delis. Recently my grandson moved to the Circle City and agreed to pick up some of my favorites and deliver them to us on one of his frequent weekend visits. Sounded great but came with problems! I am not an expert on European food and when I shopped Babushka's in the past it involved pointing at items and trying to communicate with the staff with some difficulty .....So what to do? Had to think outside the box. Voila! iPhone's......! Yes my grandson toured the store with iPhone in hand and I pointed out items on "face time". Delivery complete!!! We unpackaged a half-pound of salmon caviar, a pound of havarti cheese , six sticks of excellent sausage, two different types of bologna, some imported sliced prosciutto, a lloaf of "Farmers" Amber Rye imported from Lithuanian, a pint of sour cream and some currant jam. We have been snacking and pigging out for days! Give this fantastic deli on 86st a visit even if you have to do so using new technology shopping techniques !!!!!.....I guarantee that your time will be well spent! read more

Especially if you are looking for Polish mushrooms, pierogi, sausage. They were very nice and helpful. Not many places in Indianapolis to find Polish food. So sad! Even the so called International grocery store is not helpful. They are mostly Asian read more

What a great hidden gem. I discovered this place when searching online for a "Russian restaurant". Some of the posts suggested that you could get carry-out food from here (ready to eat), which isn't really true. Most of it is either frozen or in a meat case. But it was easy to prepare. We got some Pelmini's and loved them. I look forward to trying something new next time. read more

Nice store with a friendly cashier. Many grocery choices from Eastern Europe (Russia, Ukraine, Poland, Baltic countries), but not always the best quality and sometimes not the freshest. It's a hit or miss, but mostly a hit. Prices are above average so I only buy here if I really feel nostalgic or can't find something in local supermarkets. read more

My Polish boyfriend and I visited to get supplies for a Polish feast on Easter Sunday. He had not tasted some poppy seed roll in more than 20 years. His eyes kept getting bigger the more he looked at the selections. He got some real Polish Cherry liqueur, a ring of nice smoked sausage, hunters sausage, pierogi, and borscht and some chocolate. Absolutely love this place! The owners are very gracious and helpful. I have a lot of Russian friends back home in Los Angeles. We always frequent the Russian grocery stores and restaurants. Now that I moved to Indy, I miss the smoked salmon, variniki, Russian candies and my favorite Dadu ice cream. Well, a little slice of Russian heaven is here in Indy! Nothing had a name, so I had no idea what the things for sale were called. I ordered two desserts that looked okay, but on getting them home I threw them out as they were incredibly bland and tasteless. The person behind the counter was not helpful at all, and pretty cold. I didn't get the feeling they wanted me in their store. The Russian tv show that was blaring made very little sense, but was the only thing the attendant was paying attention to. Some friends said they've bought some of the packaged food from here and it tastes like it's been on a shelf for a decade or more. If this is what being in Russia is like, I'll live a happy life never going there. I would not come back here. read more

I love Babushka's Deli. I'm giving it a five because it is a one-of-kind place in Indy. We're a city that lacks Slavic food, and this is really the only place to get it (although I hear, and am dying to try a new place that opened at 96th and Michigan). The place is small and cramped, but this certainly does not take away from its selection. In fact, it reminds me of a lot of corner stores I've visited in Russia. Do yourself a favor and give Babushka's a shot. You won't be sorry. read more

Privetichki, tovarish! Babushka's (pronounced with the stress on the first syllable, thank you) takes me back. Oh, does it ever. First of all, depending on who's in that day, the staff can be a bit too authentic (read: cross, sneering, condescending or all of the above) for my taste. This is really why I'm giving it three stars. Additionally, the prices frustrate me, as I know what the items cost in Rossiya, and it's a fraction of what they cost here. However, that's just a personal quirk, and really has no bearing on this review-- by American standards, I think that they're fairly priced. If you're Russian and hankering for a taste of the Rodina, or if you're an American like me who has spent a good amount of time there, or if you're just curious, this is your place. Good selection of pelmeni and varenikhi (the dumplings), which can be filled with meat, cheese or fruit; Russian candy; pickles; many varieties of salted fish; tea, etc. They also have typical Russian...stuff, for lack of a better word...like matroshki (nesting dolls), samovars, and possibly some amber. You can also buy Russian magazines, listen to Russian news on the tv and see ads posted in Russian on the bulletin board. read more

Still around. Very clean. Looks a little down-sized compared to a few years ago. Rye and pumpernickel bread from Chicago. Imported meats, cheese, fish, sausage etc. A dessert case with rich sweets. Canned/bottled vegetables. Imported chocolates/candies. Very worthy of patronage, or browsing for something different/exotic when you're in the neighborhood. read more

I absolutely love going to this store. I hate that I am not fluent in Russian but I do really enjoy the cuisine. I am able to find great bread, tasty ravioli and deli meats that myself and my kids love. They also have an awesome candy corner which my toddler loves. He knows he always gets to pick out a candy when we go. I have never been to Babushka's and not gotten outstanding customer service... I love this deli and will definitely continue going to this local gem. read more

One of Indy's only Russian Delis carries products from Turkey to Transylvania. The front features pickles of every size, shape and origin. The freezer has "hand-made" dumplings from Turkey, Russia, and Siberia. The back wall features Russian beer and a wealth of wines--including Dracula's Blood, a Transylvanian red. Bread Kvass in liter bottles at the front only looks like beer, from the cover pictures of men drinking from Steins. Lots of fish and sausage in the cases up front--especially herring. Lots looks to be "imported" from delis in Chicago. read more

What a delightful find! I'm not terribly familiar with Eastern European cuisine, but it's fun to pick out new things to try. The poppyseed pastries are wonderful! The owners are very helpful with their recommendations as well. Definitely worth checking out. read more

Some hard to find -- and really good -- offerings make this a great destination. Baltika beer is excellent (especially #7). Best bread in the city (brick pumpernickel from the Baltic Bakery in Chicago), best tea selection I've seen, and excellent Georgian red wines. Beautiful fish and sausages. read more

All the Russian staples under one tiny roof: Kvas, halva, sushki, chocolates, sparkling wines, pechen'ye. Brown bread and several types of pelmeni (ravioli to be boiled and eaten as soup in broth), as well a blinchiki (filled crepes) in the freezer. Sour cream and cottage cheese closely approximating "old world". Wide selection of canned goods (pickles, tomatoes, shproty, compotes). Around the holidays, ask about red caviar sold by weight - best and freshest caviar I was able to find so far in the States. read more

I found this place to be very unethical ion their business dealings. I was charged for 1.5 pounds of caviar and when weighed at home( I have a professional meat scale it was barely over 1.09 pounds. When speaking with the owner I was basically called a liar. I will never return. read more

I used to love this store because I did not know any better in Indy. Tastes of Europe on 96th is good but it does not have much of Ukrainian or Polish products, like Roshen chocolate, certain types of dumplings and vareniki, etc. So Babushka's Deli was a true find for me. I have been a regular customer, but found that some products are way overpriced in comparison to similar stores in Chicago or New York. I also noticed that several times they cheated on the weights, when I'd get caviar or candy. I hope they've learned and do not do it anymore. I am now very happy to discover the mini-mart on Rangeline Rd with a great Ukrainian, Polish and Russian food selection. Stopped going to Babushka's Deli, prefer not to be lied to. Glad Indy is getting more competition in the market of Easter European foods. read more

It's a fairly small store, so the selection of products was small and disappointing. They have a lot of Eastern European candy more than actual food. They also have mostly Russian food, though they advertise as a Russian/Ukrainian/Polish store. read more

I miss my deli's from up north and this is the best deli I've found for salami's and lunchmeat. They carry some of the "real" German lunchmeats and their salami selection is extensive. I was especially delighted to find the Hungarian salami we used to get from Oma & Opa in our Christmas packages. Wide selection and quaint atmosphere. I try to get there as often as possible so that we can have our "Continental Breakfast" on the weekends. read more

Nice store but make sure to check your receipt before you leave, as the owner tends to overcharge or charge you twice for the same thing. Unethical! read more
