There are no guarantees that you will ever have a baby in the end. I have a lot of sympathy for people who run out of funds and cannot have the family they dream of. I have witnessed this scenario with many people over the years. In the end surrogacy is an expensive solution to having children, and Christy and Jon and their employees have helped many of us realize our dreams.

We were in tears many times because everybody changed their tune once the pregnancy seemed safe. The surrogate refused to work around our schedule for appointments and changed doctors without any notification to us, and the agency was of no help to us, despite prior agreements. They bullied us into placing extra money in the escrow account that we could not touch for a year after. That was about $27,000 just sitting there for no reason. They threatened the custody of the baby through a legal letter if we didn't pay more than what was agreed, only to have that money just sitting there. They preyed on us in a vulnerable time. We are not rich, but we just wanted a baby. They didn't have enough staff as our contact, Jessica, was pregnant with her own surrogacy at the time. We were left hanging a lot. This is too sensitive a process to have people handle it with such little care, adding way more stress to this already difficult process. We are not difficult people, but we just expected honesty from everybody, and we were let down.

At first we looked at the larger surrogacy agencies. We met good, well-intentioned people at these…read moreagencies, but we found some communication offputting and delayed. It was apparent to us that the bigger companies have to deal with a lot of volume. I'm sure they have great people working at those companies, but I was concerned that we wouldn't get the attentive service and communication we needed. We started our journey with our IVF clinic, UCSF Reproductive Clinic, which is one of the best in the world. And that's where we found A Perfect Match. They had a small, vetted list of the best surrogacy agencies. Our UCSF coordinator said that A Perfect Match is an "above and beyond agency." We had an interview with them (along with probably 6 or 7 other agencies) and realized that Susan and Ruth were perfect. They had gone through the process before themselves, they were great communicators, extremely knowledgeable, and genuinely good people. Another thing that was important to us was that their prices were in line with other agencies, if not a little less than what we were seeing. I will note that fees are always changing, so if that's important to you, do your own research because what you see online for agency fees and other aspects of surrogacy has changed in the last few years. Overall they had a very organized approach to the process, with straightforward steps along the long journey. In the beginning we were very unsure of everything and overwhelmed. It's obvious that they know what they are doing and have had plenty of experience. One thing I really appreciated about A Perfect Match was that they got back to us with any questions really quickly. It was obvious that they were invested in our success and concerns. They were very good at helping us work through hiccups along the way. And let me tell you, one thing that is universal with surrogacy journeys is that there will be unforeseen problems and speed bumps. We found a surrogate within weeks. I don't want to imply that this is normal, but we ended up having a wonderful match that met all of our needs. After we talked with two other surrogates, Ruth and Susan figured out the type of person we were looking for. One thing in particular that was very helpful was their knowledge of insurance issues. We had quite a few setbacks and challenges with insurance and they were knowledgeable in their own right, and put us in contact with experts when needed. They also helped us find great family lawyers. Some advice I have is to concentrate on your next steps and don't get overwhelmed by the entire process, which will take a year or two depending on your situation. Focus on what you need to do now and let Susan and Ruth guide you. (Also just want to say we ended up with an amazing healthy little boy and will be using them again in a year for our second!)

There is a ton of paperwork and details to manage, and she explained everything realistically and simply; and answered probably a hundred questions from me via email, text, and phone calls. She treated me with respect and autonomy- as a person- respecting my boundaries and needs with compassion at all times, assuring me things that were important to me, like a single embryo transfer, would be ensured. She has been so helpful and responsive, even when I had a few challenges with the fertility doctor's clinic/staff before the IVF transfer. She stepped in and helped navigate the confusion and managed all the travel and scheduling. Every communication has been responded to quickly and thoroughly. I was really able to relax and trust her to handle details like insurance coverage, providers, legalities, referrals, birth paperwork, reimbursements, escrow etc. As we got along in the process, one thing that was especially essential to me was that the fit between myself and the family I would end up working with would be very cohesive. Her thoroughness in matching helped that be exactly how it went. Because of what an amazing match she helped arrange, it felt so smooth and simple, and I feel I will have a lifelong friendship with the family I carried for. I fell in love with the service then and I'm even more in love now. I had no idea that I could use One Medical as my primary and now that I know that, I am doing just that. In person appointments are easily available (usually the same day) and online visits are usually available within the hour. The offices are sleek and feel like a hotel lobby, not an infected hospital waiting room. There is spa water and I've never been in the lobby with more than two other people. There are no long waits and you can even do your labs on location, which I did. Once again, I love this service and hopefully this review isn't going to blow up my spot!

I've been a One Medical member since September 2016, and I want to be very clear: this experience…read morerepresents a sharp decline from what the service used to be. I recently scheduled an annual physical and was later hit with an unexpected bill because my insurance applies a rolling 365-day rule for preventive exams. That alone would have been frustrating but understandable. What made this unacceptable was how One Medical handled it afterward. I was given conflicting explanations about whether eligibility for annual physicals is verified. One leader told me One Medical does check eligibility for many plans and that mine was an edge case. Billing later told me they do not verify eligibility at all and that it is entirely the patient's responsibility. Those statements directly contradict each other. In a membership-based care model that explicitly markets coordination and prevention, this is a serious failure. The tone from billing was dismissive and rigid. Responsibility was shifted entirely onto me. Responses were slow. There was no ownership of the confusion they created, no acknowledgment that their own process failed, and no attempt to close the loop with anything resembling goodwill. The message was essentially "policy is policy," which completely undermines the point of paying a membership fee in the first place. What's most disappointing is that this was never my experience before. I had years of consistently good care with One Medical, including at their Phoenix office, where I never once encountered this level of rigidity, poor communication, or lack of accountability. This issue has been specific to the San Diego location. Since Amazon took over ownership, the service has become noticeably more restrictive and transactional. The quality of care and the member experience have steadily declined. What used to feel patient-centered now feels like a corporate operation hiding behind scripts and policies when something goes wrong. I paid the bill, but the trust is gone. For longtime members who joined One Medical for proactive care and transparency, this is not the experience you signed up for.
