I happened to catch this Baby's Buns and Buckets pop-up while I was visiting Other Half Brewing at the Domino Park location. From what I was told the items in this review are currently only served at their pop ups, but check out the menu at the actual restaurant. I am certain that the food there is phenomenal. Ok so first off let me say that this family is awesome. They are all not just cordial but so welcoming. I saw nothing but friendly smiles, and felt great vibes. I had the pleasure of meeting Sage and she gave me the story of the business. Please go out and support small businesses, especially women owned, minority businesses. I will say that the man, who was working with them is the nicest guy in the world. Now on to the food. This hot lobster roll with butter and Thai seafood sauce was on point! I am not a fan of mayo but I am sure that the garlic mayo takes this lobster roll to another level. Normally I only like my lobster roll with melted butter but the Thai seafood sauce gave it this citrusy , slightly tangy flavor that went well with the lobster. And the lobster roll itself is just beautiful. (I tend to eat with my eyes. Lol) I was truly craving a lobster roll and I am so glad that you all were there. I have never had fried basa, but it was prepared to perfection. I really loved the batter, and the fish was not over seasoned. The fish was light, not too flakey, and tasted great with the garlic chili sauce. My only regret is that I took it to go. Really great option in the food hall! We were initially drawn to it for the nuggets which come with a sweet chili dipping sauce. There wasn't anything particularly special about the nuggets, but they were cooked well and not dry at all. I ended up ordering Baby's Bucket which included sticky rice, honey pork, cucumbers, and tomatoes. I opted out of the garlic mayo. The portion was pretty hefty and I easily had leftovers, so I think for the amount of meat you're getting the price is pretty reasonable. The pork has a nice and smoky flavor, but it was a bit more fatty than I was expecting. The sticky rice tasted more like regular white rice, but nonetheless still pretty solid. read more

I enjoy the piece of fish was bigger than the mini bread. Packed with flavor and perfectly crisp. Came here before catching a show at the Brooklyn Paramount, and was blown away by how delicious and filling the fried chicken and friend fish buns were. The first thing we noticed were how fresh they were - service was helpful and we watched our orders being made after we ordered (vs just reheating already made sandos). Then once we got the sandos - it made us laugh how small the buns were compared to the giant slabs of fish and chicken! Both were cooked perfectly and perfectly paired with the accompanyaments (the spicy papaya slaw on the chicken was divine). It is also conveniently located in DeKalb Market, so there is bound to be something that could satisfy each of your companions tastes if they mistakenly choose to pass this up. First of all, I want to say how surprised I was seeing how this place is Halal, which I think is the one place in Dekalb market that provides such option. I had the 6 pieces chicken nuggets with spicy fries, and the outcome was amazing. The nuggets were big in shape, very filling and juicy; every bite was tasty. I took a trip to the Dekalb Market Hall strictly for Baby's Buns & Buckets after seeing a few videos circling social media & I was pleasantly surprised that it lived up to the rave reviews! Specializing in bao buns and yes, food that comes in buckets, I knew I had to get a bucket for the fatty garlic rice. The rice was immensely flavorful, and for someone who doesn't *love* white rice, I finished every grain of this garlicky, salty goodness. It perfectly complimented the fish & salad that came with the bowl, providing a nice contrast to the plain leafy greens. The fish was crispy and perfectly seasoned, reminding me of dishes my family has made in the past. What I love about this stall is that it isn't your typical Thai cuisine that most people know and love, there's a lot of aspects of it that are very similar to home cooked meals that restaurants don't typically serve (with an Americanized spin). Dekalb Market Hall is a bit of a labyrinth, with so many great options packed into a few aisles. When they first opened I really fell in love with the place and wondered why I would bother with traditional restaurant set ups in the first place. While I'm a bit over food halls these days, Baby's Buns and Buckets does punch above their weight class, serving up buckets of joy in a city where a meal like this often comes with a heftier price tag. The menu is quite straightforward. The food actually does come in buckets, offered with different proteins. Anything from honey pork to fried chicken thigh, fried fish, and fried mushrooms. I love the fried fish option, which is better than any fish and chips I can get. Each bucket comes with sides like shredded cabbage, crispy or pickled onions, and mixed greens, but the real highlight for me is the fatty chicken broth rice. It's just the perfect foundation for the tower of deliciousness piled on top. You can get a complete meal for about $18, which is not bad for lunch in Downtown Brooklyn in 2024. This is just a stand in a food hall, so there isn't much in the way of seating except for a little perch with some stools at the stall, but you can find picnic benches elsewhere in the food hall area. It's pretty easy to find seating for a small group if you're with a couple of friends. Another viral business that deserves all the hype! My husband and I visited for dinner a couple of weeks ago and shared: - Baby's Bucket ($18) - probably my favorite dish of the night and a generous portion size for sure - Small chicken nuggets ($6) - Small fish nuggets ($6) - Fried chicken bun ($8) - Large papaya slaw ($12) - loved this fusion of papaya salad and cole slaw. They're THIGH meat which is an immediate win being dark meat. They are also huge, I would consider each one about 1/3 of a thigh, or 3-4x the size/weight of a mcnugget. So juicy and flavorful. The breading was top notch, so crispy and crunchy and not heavy. You know when you get fried food and halfway through you're kind of over it but just pushing to finish? Not this one - the 10th nugget was as good as the first. The thai chili dipping sauce is a perfect complement to the nuggets. I asked for the fries extra crispy and they delivered. Scorching hot and very crispy. Wife's grilled pork bucket was also very flavorful and huge. She didn't finish it (but she was also eating some of my nuggets) I would put this fried chicken in the top 5 fried chickens I have eaten this year. My only criticism is that the sauce was suuuper salty which sort of overpowered the taste of the mushroom. Their rice is looked in fatty oils (most likely chicken fat) which enhances the richness and flavour profile of their meal. It is a similar technique to the Hainanese Chicken Rice. Came here on a Thursday around 5:30 and it wasn't too busy yet. I've been wanting to check this out since I got an email from Dekalb Market Hall for new openings and it didn't disappoint! I ordered the Grilled Honey Pork bun on a dinner roll (for an extra dollar) and some spicy fries which came out to about $16. Food arrived pretty quickly - was quoted 10-15 minutes and came out closer to 10 minutes. Food was delicious. The bun was huge for such a small bun and messy to eat but was packed with flavors. The grilled honey pork was pieces of sweet and savory thin pork (think jerky) with the fixins. Honestly I can just eat a whole bucket of the pork. The fries were delicious as well, light and crispy on the outside and potato-ey on the inside. The "spicy" powder was interesting because I had bites where it just tasted sweet and some bites that were just spicy. All in all, I'd come back and order this same thing again! read more

They specialize in modest sandwiches and larger buckets of fried treats, with an Asian twist and plenty of veggies to balance out the crunch. Today I had the fish bucket, which is 2 cups of fried fish bites at the top of the bucket, with garlic sticky rice, cabbage slaw, mixed greens, sweet pickled onions at the bottom of the bucket. It also came with a sweet onion relish. It's a large portion, for a large lunch or split in half with a friend. The fish was flaky and fresh, the sticky rice was amaaaaaaaaazing.
