Bacchanalia has long been on our "bucket list" so now we have checked it off. On the positive side, the experience was definitely a memorable night out and a good choice for a really special occasion. Each of the five courses was a beautiful 5-star presentation, a work of art begging to be photographed and each course was efficiently served hot or cold as the dish called for. On the negative side, though, each course we ordered tasted OK but nothing tasted as good as it looked. The first two courses are very small appetizers (the crab fritter pretty good, the Georgia red shrimp not so much). The entree course...(we ordered the pork plate and the NY strip) were still just OK at best ...served with no bread. The fourth, cheese course and the fifth, dessert course tasted pretty good but not nearly as good as other reviewers have claimed. The wait staff was entirely overworked. The waitress could explain the menu on request but if you aren't familiar with a dish you are wasting her time because you still won't know what you ate afterwards. You order the entire meal and wines at once. The anticipated two-hour dinner took over three hours with very long waits between courses. Everything on the table was cleared off between courses except water glasses and/or what you are drinking and the crumbs on the table. So mountains of dishes, flatware, and wine glasses for each diner for each course may have created so much work in the kitchen that you just had to feel sorry for the dishwasher! The wine pairings were well-chosen but if you enjoy wine, do not order the half-glass.... go ahead and order the full glass or a bottle of your favorite. We celebrated our daughter's 20th birthday here in December. We all ordered the prix fixe menus. Everything was perfect- the service, the atmosphere, the food. We could not have asked for a nicer way to celebrate this occasion. The wait staff made us feel like we were the only ones in the restaurant- though every table was full. The specialty cocktail was so memorable we asked the bartender how to make it. He proceeded to bring out the ingredients and show us- we ordered the ingredients and started making them at home. read more

How do you give 1/2 stars on yelp???? I say Bacchanalia is a 41/2. It's fine dining, but not mouth-watering, knock me off my chair amazing. Although the dessert "gifts" from the chef could be considered that. I can't remember what I had, but I do know I ordered stuff I never thought I'd eat -and liked. Don't be disappointed with the small portions, the artistry in the display is worth it. And I found myself eating slower, and thus getting surprisingly full. The service, of course, is stellar. I am surprised, though, that they didn't offer me a black linen napkin instead of the white one. Even Seasons 52 does that. I was wearing a black dress, so you would think it was automatic. Attention to detail, people. I've also never seen a fine-dining restaurant with a gift shop and the Abbattour ( I call it a butcher shop.) Overrated! I have contemplated with leaving this review, however I feel the bad experience I had on my birthday deserves to be heard. As I said, it was my birthday which is also La Bastille Day and I like going to French restaurants to celebrate so my husband surprised me with reservations. The decor is very nice however we were seated so close to the next table that I literally was being elbowed by the the guy sitting next to us. When we were approached by the server I informed her that we do not eat pork and asked if she could help us with the menu. First course was very good and the second also, followed by soup which was also very good. Main course came and after we started eating, both our entrees had bacon all through it that we were unaware of only until after the first bite. I flagged down the next server that walked by and told them the issue. The dining room manager came and offered alternative entrees. To say the least I was very disappointed about it but tried to brush it off. I was given a complementary dessert, so I thought. We had a bottle of wine with our dinner and the total was over $300 and we were charged for the dessert. On our way home, which is 20 minutes away, both of us became severely sick with stomach cramps and vomiting after we made it home. What a horrible experience! The dining manager just treated us like we didn't matter. My opinion on this experience is if a restaurant is such a fine dining restaurant and charging these kind of prices then at least these servers should be well trained to know the menu so customers with food restrictions will not have the issue we did. Oh, Bacchanalia, how I wanted to love you, I truly did. I wanted to love you as I loved the dearly departed Craft Atlanta. But it was not to be. And at a grand total of roughly $200 for one person including drinks and gratuity, I feel that I should have. I have absolutely no quibble with your service; I found the team impeccable, informed, and quite pleasant. I'd consider returning based on my interactions with them alone. But let's talk about the meal itself. In short, I feel as if I paid a premium price for beautiful tapas, interspersed with "gifts from the chef" (make no mistake here, they were not amuse bouche, as we were told with a hint of a frown when someone at the table exclaimed such). I started with the beef tartare, others had the popular crab fritter and the coddled egg, both of which were far more entertaining on the palate than my tartare, which was so tiny that I didn't even have enough time to get a handle on what it was trying to tell me. It was so busy with other ingredients that I couldn't really find the beef. The duck was up next for the second course. The traditional portion was perfectly prepared, but the dumpling wrapped around duck sausage seemed almost raw. I think you were attempting a soup type dumpling, but I couldn't quite get there. My cheese course was absolutely not a cheese course. It was a salad, hands down. In fact, all of the cheese selections at my table were dishes that used the selected cheese as an ingredient, and not always the main one. And mine was honestly a bunch of radicchio with the Asher blue cheese hidden underneath in a treatment of some sort of vinaigrette and candied walnuts. What? The final dessert course of the apple soufflé was indeed, a lovely soufflé with a literal spoonful of vanilla gelato...which you really needed to balance the apple jam found in the bottom of the ramekin, but by then it was gone. It was like eating preserves straight from the jar. I wanted to love you. The saltiness still lingers on after 2 glasses of water. Unfortunately due to the heavy hands on the salt, our entire meal seemed almost one dimensional. The appetizer of sous vide/grilled octopus was tender and sweet. The fried squash blossom with octopus forcemeat was the best thing all night. I wanted a basket of those! The entree of duck (cured) was a play on "pho" the vietnamese noodle soup, however, I wish I had a bowl of $5 pho over their version of salty duck, salty pheasant sausage. and salty consomme, a mess in a bowl. The cheese course of sheep's milk cheese with heirloom beets (raw and roasted) was very good although the beet sorbet was too sweet for its placement on a salad. I was looking forward to the desserts of blueberry souffle with sweet corn ice cream and coconut cream pie. After the server circled the dining twice with our desserts, it finally made it to the correct table. If they are trying to save money on the ice cream, why bother? The demi-tasse portion was melted by the time they scooped it into my souffle, the "sauce" was too sweet and warm. I don't even know what to say about the coconut cream pie. The coconut sorbet tasted like sweetened milk water, the coconut rocher (macaroon) base was so sticky sweet and chewy. The coconut pastry cream was a bouncing ball of cornstarch and sugar. And then to top it with meringue???? I ate at Baccanalia 13 years ago in the modest house on Piedmont Road and it was one of those memorable meals I remembered for years. I've been here quite a few times, and must say that they are one of the very few real fine dining establishments in Atlanta. The service is always earnest, and I seem to get a great seat every time. My only complaint about Bacchanalia is that they never leave me feeling full. I would gladly pay more for the prix fixe if it had one or two more dishes to leave me fully satisfied. As with Quinones, I enjoy Bacchanalia's starters much more than the end of the meal. They do a good job of keeping the flavors clean, and not adding unnecessary bits to their dishes. I've had very few enjoyable cheese courses in my life, but Bacchanalia has a mindset of transforming the cheese course, so I can actually appreciate it. Dessert here is also usually enjoyable, but maybe that's because you get to choose your dessert instead of having a flight of decadent things shoved down your throat. I'll go ahead and give a full 5 stars- I've yet to have an unpleasant visit here, and can tell the Quatrano's sincerely want to pursue some form of excellence; good job guys. read more

I actuallly would rank Bacchanalia as the best restaurant I've been to so far in my life. The food is so, so delicious that it all seems to melt in your mouth. I have only been here twice because it is expensive, and I tend to think of it as a special occasions type of restaurant. However, both times, I have been uber-impressed by the food. The inside of the restaurant is pretty small; it seems like you are in a modernized warehouse (that has now been redecorated to be really elegant). There is a bar on the right as you walk in, and behind the bar, it is all glass, and you can see into the kitchen and watch as all of the food is prepared. The menu is prix fixe, and you can choose to do it with the recommended accompanying wine samples for a higher price if you want. You pick from a variety of options at the beginning of the meal, and you select all four of your courses at once (including the dessert). Interspersed with the four courses are little samples from the chef which are both delicious and fun surprises because you don't really know when or what to expect (they can range from cucumber soup to cookies). At first, ordering all four courses at one time can be somewhat nerveracking, but you shouldn't worry because I really don't think that you can go wrong with anything. Literally, everything is delicious. The best chicken I've ever had was from here, so moist and tender. It is fun to eat this way also because it is so different from a more typical restaurant. The portions are a good size, in that you don't feel overwhelmed or stuffed by the time the fourth course arrives. I recommend this place 100%, and i do not see how you could be disappointed with a meal here. read more

Visited twice within 10 days (it was that good) and ordered from a la carte menu and prie fixe menu on the separate occasions. The food was exquisite! The blend of flavors and ingredients was palate blowing! Servers are knowledgeable, and chef can visit table if you are curious to find out more about your dish. Wine pairings were excellent. This is an expensive place - don't go if you are in a rush - you need time to savor the flavors over many courses. Location near mid-town looks a little industrial on the approach - don't be fooled! Everything was excellent. The bread is particularly delicious. The wines were well paired. The service is very good. This is my restaurant for special occasions. The flavors are unique. Outstanding presentation, so many flavors and the best wait staff in Atlanta. My boyfriend and I went on a Friday night and our reservation was for 9pm. We didn't see a Valet set up so just parked right in front of Star Provisions market. I didn't realize that we needed to walk through the market to get to the restaurant but luckily the security guard pointed us in the right direction. Now for the good stuff: Dining room is small and intimate and the wait staff was absolutely wonderful. There is a nice tempo to the meal since everything comes out in courses and they time everything perfectly. The menu is prix-fixe at $85 not including drinks. There were 4 courses and we had 1) Crab Fritters - BETTER than any crab cake. The fritter is all lump crab meat and lightly breaded and fried. The sauce that came with it was a citrus/spicy taste. 2) Main entrée - my boyfriend ordered the NY Strip and I had the Scallops, steak had a really nice reduction/sauce on it - very tasty and super tender. I think I chose wrong when I ordered the scallops - they were just ok. 3) Gorgonzola w/ Pears and Goat Cheese w/ Beats - both were beyond expectations. 4) For dessert we ordered the Triple Chocolate plate and Chocolate Cake w/ Mint Ice cream - honestly way too much chocolate for me but my boyfriend enjoyed all of it. Oh yeah - in between each course we received "gifts" from the chef - this is what made my experience so perfect. We got to sample: Pumpkin soup, a Turnip/Asian explosion (my words), cheese bread, hot coco w/ homemade marshmallow, coconut macaroons, gingersnaps, and other small goodies. When I went here for the first time, it was at the time the best dinner of my life. I went back a few months after. I looked at the menu and thought, should I order the same things as last time and thus replicate the best dinner of my life, or take a chance and try to completely new items? I chose the latter. And might I say, no regrets either. If possible, it was an even better experience the second time around. Which speaks volumes since I already held a high standard entering now for a second time. First course: Yellow Fin Tuna Crudo with Kohirabi, Lemon Grass, Radish, Shiso. Simple and the yellow fin shines. Stellar. Second course: Nantucket Bay Scallops with Potatoes, Leeks, Preserved Lemon, Salt Cod Brandade. Incredible scallops again, allowed to shine through because of the simplicity of the dish. Third course: Boudin Blanc Stuffed Quail with Creamed Farro, Parsnip, Summerland Farm Spinach, Sour Cherries. This was the most adventurous dish. The quail was excellent complimented by an array of tastes and textures from the sides. This was the most fun dish. Fourth course: Fortsonia (Elberton, GA) with Summerland Farm Broccoli, Savory Custard, and Summerland Farm Herbs. Have you ever had fried broccoli with cheese? This is the exquisite form and may have very well been the standout dish of the night. Incredible. Fifth course: Yates Apple Tart Tatin with Rosemary Ice Cream. Superb. The perfect sweet to end the night. Don't forget the multiple glasses of wine. And the coffee and madeleines. And the chocolate bon bons, blueberry gelee, and marshmellows. And the phenomenal service. Including making someone like me with a severe peanut allergy feel very safe. I will continue to come here to have my palate taken to new places. The room revokes rustic luxury, open and comfortable yet the acoustics were good. The wait staff stoic and efficient, even with our attempt to engage; one fellow loosened up with a smile by the end. We all had 4 courses with wine pairings. (They didn't tell you what wine you were drinking and why.) The good news, you can choose from a well rounded selection among each course. Also, the portions were quite sizable in our opinion. Lobster salad was very light and delicious, crab fritter- not the best ever. 2nd courses were very good, lamb, shrimp, & a large piece of salmon. Cheese course was a disappointment, Parmesan artsy yet tasteless, as was the iced Brie. Better to opt for the cheese board you see it going by, and expectations are let down. The desserts were most disappointing - peach soufflé rather tasteless, more cream than peach. They also served a peach smoothie before dessert- again, more cream than flavor and unnecessary as we were quite full from the substantial portions. We'd been to previous Bacchanalia locations and with all the buzz wanted to check out the new location. Check, done. Dinner for 4 with the wine pairing over $600. Atlanteans are not like most people. They believe in glamour before anything else. Which is odd, because for such a trendy, party kind of town, there's very little Bacchus to be found in Bacchanalia. From its peculiar, gray, drab, cavern like decorum and if there is color to be found, the lighting so sparse, it would be difficult to discover it in the food. For all of the hype around this place that took me there to begin with? Along with 3 others? Not worth the some $800 plus Bacchus bucks. Unless you've just been there as a member of the "It" crowd, the access is very confusing, although the retail store you troll through beforehand a fascinating boutique that should be Bacchanalia's envy and inspiration, but sadly isn't. Upon arriving, I was honestly shocked at the lack of color in place with such a historically decadent name. For those that know Atlanta, this restaurant should be more akin to a place like Two Urban Licks. There should be excitement, revelery, celebration, and you know, not expecting total debauchery, but something far less library. You can't underwhelm with a name like that. And it was. And I tried thinking about it with a different name and it still registers as something I wouldn't go back for. Everyone in town from The Glenn Hotel staff to this person or that were like, "oh you have to go," and "they win Top Restaurant every year." Really? Not to spoiler alert you, but in the same weekend, my dinner at South City Kitchen in Midtown was so far superior and hence their being a mainstay for nearly 30 years. Admittedly, I was distracted by the open kitchen as I sat at Bacchanalia's bar. All of the elves dressed in white looking serious and moving about. Beautiful kitchen. Just too bad we all can't see it from our tables mostly. That might actually be entertaining. At the end of the night, I got the feeling that it was kind of a conspiracy they were all involved in, if just asked to put on the face of selling something that isn't. For the money? I won't bore you with how tiny the font is on the menus and or the wine lists. Really this is a symptom of most restaurants in America now and probably the fault of graphic designers and over expectational owners but in a place with this reputation? A fault. Funny, but this is the first review I've authored where I'm not interested in talking about the food. Look at their menu online. Its 5 courses alright and each with wine suggestions and the like, but honestly, it all went lost. I know there were passionate people making it in the kitchen and when a little Asian man personally delivered some sort of farm egg with shaved white truffle (additional $30 & not much taste), he did so with a serenity and humbleness that said he was the master of this dish. In fact, every "maker" of each dish seems to deliver it to your table which really should seem fun, but for some reason it made it all disjointed. And that's my real point here. The inherent name of this place, suggests ritual and ceremony but falls completely flat on an emotional experience level. There were no Oooos or Ahhhhs from the table at all. And we were all primed for them in this establishment. But it was all facade and for an educated palate or just someone who has a faint understanding of what the name implies? Bacchus is a bust. Save your money and for all of the extra you do? Spend it at South CIty Kitchen or a place like Two Urban Licks who deliver Bacchus in both spirit, but most importantly in service and taste. read more

i joined yelp just so i could talk MORE about how amazing our experience was at bacchanalia. so, maybe that gives you an idea of my thoughts... :) we went in with high expectations- it needed to be one of the best meals of our lives to live up to the reviews (and the bill, let's be honest)- and oh, it was. starting with the service: thoughtful and flawless. my husband and i decided that we would share a negroni while we looked over the wine list- our waiter must have heard us talking because he brought us the cocktail split between two glasses. the rest of our night continued with the same level of service. our courses were perfectly timed and our waiter was knowledgeable and professional, so refreshing. and then there's the food. really, incredible. everything we tasted was perfectly prepared, creative and delicious. the crab fritter was our favorite appetizer- so delicately fried with very little besides crab meat inside- i have no idea how it stayed together. but that doesn't matter- it was heavenly. for our entrees hus had the steak and i had red snapper. his steak was perfectly cooked and wonderful but i think the candied onion was his favorite part. my snapper had the most flavorful, crispy skin and it was nestled in a bed of creamy cauliflower & buttery brioche, oh dear. our favorite cheese & contrast was the beet and chevre dish and our favorite dessert was the valrhona chocolate cake with mint ice cream. realize, please, that i could talk all day about every single dish's perfection but i'll spare you and instead just encourage you to GO! this was easily the best meal i've had in atlanta. maybe the best meal i've had anywhere. it's a perfectly cozy spot for a date or special occasion and the service allows you to relax and enjoy your evening. we were there about three hours. prix fixe, 4 courses: $85, about $150/person with wine. read more

As for the food--it was pretty mediocre. I expected for the food to blow me out of this world--which it did not. Sadly to say, I've had better food for half the price else where. Food was great. Service was a let down. Very impersonal. There was a lot of down time between 4th and 5th course and no one checked on us. Coffee? After dinner drink? Finally someone stopped by to replace the silverware and I asked for a port list and really felt like I was inconveniencing them. Overall I kind of enjoyed my experience at Bacchanalia, but there were some definite issues with the service. In a restaurant of this caliber I would expect several people dedicated to our table, but throughout the evening my water glass was empty and MUCH worse my wine glass was empty - I had to pour my own wine. I loathe pouring my own wine at a fine dining establishment. One of our party got the wine pairing - which did not arrive until the 3rd course (we started with oysters) - so the poor man got 2 kinds of port (cheese and dessert) - but missed out on more spectacular wines which should have been delivered earlier in service. When she was around our server was lovely and charming to the degree that we left with an overall good feeling about the experience despite her many and prolonged absence. Her absence was not rectified by a captain (although there were TWO on the floor). It seemed like so many people were celebrating occasions (this place is FULL of birthdays and two tables over an engagement) - that the regular diner was forgotten. Also the explanation of a lot of dishes I found demeaning - aimed at an uneducated audience - maybe I'm too much of a food snob and an oenophile for this place to handle. The food was all fine - just fine, not spectacular. The dessert was a coffee semifreddo and was frozen so hard you had to wait around for a few minutes to get into it. When I did get into it - it was sickly sweet like a Vietnamese coffee. Overall the establishment treated me like I was lucky to be there - but it ain't cheap. I have heard of this restaurant for years. My first time dining here after all of the rave reviews. We were nothing short of disappointed. The food was not that great and the staff was stuffy and not very friendly. We also felt rushed. I was like being on the clock from the second we walked in.
