It's hard to put a price on experience. This was probably my favorite dining experience in any restaurant I've ever been to. I won't ruin the run of show for anyone going for the first time, but a lot of effort has gone into what they do. Whimsical is the best word I can think of to describe the journey to the table. The service was top notch. DJ was personable, professional and prompt. There was never a moment where I needed something that wasn't already in front of me. He described plates with enthusiasm and just brought an amazing energy to the table. We opted for wine pairings and man, Elliot presented some really amazing wines. They had a fun selection that went great with all of the food. We even had a sake pairing with the cheese course. A huge thanks again to DJ and Elliot. The food. The word perfect feels dramatic but Chef Joey has put a lot of love and even some history into these plates. "A Trip Down Buford Highway" was a dish that honestly can't be topped. For someone who used to live off of Buford Highway and has experienced many of the amazing restaurants there, this felt like home. Every plate was unique and felt intentional. Beautiful presentation accompanied by exciting flavors. Was it pricey? Sure. If you want a surprise, ignore this review! Such a hidden, little, fun experience in Atlanta. If you want to feel the whimsy of childhood meals mixed with southern food and fine dining, this is the place to go! It's an experiment and an experience that leaves you full and laughing throughout while maintaining a professional atmosphere at the back of this Georgian restaurant in a little library room and later into a secret hideout. The tasting menu starts off with a welcome cocktail that I unfortunately could not make it to experience due to running a few minutes late. Everything I received had a little surprise. Some examples include: - A "PSL" that was closer to a squash soup with foam in a fake Starbucks cup with your name spelled incorrectly like they already try to do - A dish that takes you around the world containing a mini tostada, pho noodles made out of pho brothm and a szechuan.... bun? - A scotch duck egg that mimics a chicken nugget - Bacon cotton candy over a housemade cheese - Dessert to lick off the egg beater - Cereal over foie gras with nuts and a warm pecan milk - A unique toast-mousse, 3 quenelles of peanut butter, jelly, and celery, and some sort of ants on a log situation - And so much more! Had an amazing experience at Georgia Boy this weekend. The dishes are just as flavorful as they are whimsical. The most creative dish was definitely garden. It had creamy and crunchy textures with bold flavors. The foie gras tart with matcha was so tasty, I wish I had more! The lamb four different ways was excellent and the plating was visually appealing. The guava dessert was very refreshing. It was definitely one of my favorite dishes. The ice cream dessert was so playful. It was both savory and sweet. The service was impeccable. The atmosphere was intimate. My husband and I spent exactly $1,000 for two people here (including a wine pairing and extra glasses), and we left completely starving. For the price point, the food portions are shockingly small and absolutely not worth it.Worse than the food, however, was the predatory billing practice at the end of the night. Georgia Boy explicitly markets itself as a "tipless business model" with gratuity built into the menu price. Yet, at the end of the meal, the waiter handed us a terminal prompting us for an additional tip. When I remembered the policy and asked why we were being asked to tip again, the waiter completely played dumb, gave us the runaround, and looked at us like we were crazy.We felt cornered and put on the spot, so we tipped. It wasn't until we got to the car and did some research that I confirmed we had been deliberately double-charged for service. Looking at other reviews online, this is clearly a regular pattern of deception they pull on guests.Save your money and go somewhere that actually feeds you and treats you with financial honesty. There is food and then there is food from the heart. Georgia Boy is a place that is clearly Chef Joey Ward's expression from the heart. It's a symphony of memories, experiences and traditional comfort foods that one experiences growing up in Georgia. It is perhaps the purest gastronomic illustration of the state. No tasting menu is intended to be something where every dish is liked by a person, as we all have different preferences and desires. The team here takes some of this to the next step, with extremely bold dishes, combinations that the mind struggles to comprehend. Things like poached lobster underneath cereal with banana milk poured over it. Unexpected plays on classics like the Varsity hot dog transformed into an ice cream, served in the middle of the tasting courses. With bold moves like that, Chef Ward pushes boundaries in every way. Some of the creations end up amazing, others like the hot dog and the lobster cereal, let's say, for a very unique palette. If I had to take a guess, the crew here is likely completely fine with that. If there is one thing that is certain about Georgia Boy is that this will be a meal of entertainment and surprises. This not your typical Michelin tasting menu heavily reliant on French techniques with nuanced modifications, but rather an experience of plays on dishes, humor and extreme combinations. The wine selection is quite solid here, with some very unique bottles and some reasonable prices. The staff are very attentive and kind. While the menu changes constantly, a few highlights were the reinvented tomato sandwich, the chanterelle pastry and the baked Alaska dessert. What a bizarre and really cool experience! Where do I begin... the group I was part of was awesome and fun to talk to, which made the experience that much better. We were brought back to a holding room where they served us appetizers, essentially. To be honest, these pre-dinner service bites they served to us were painfully average. We then got brought back into their secret open kitchen dining room area, which instantly made me feel like I was in the movie "The Menu". IYKYK. Truly an amazing experience. Each dish was expertly prepared and so delicious. I cannot express in words really how much I loved the dinner. Starting from the beginning, they seat you in a cozy area and then almost a movie theater like space with starters. My favorite was the tiny dishes that represented different dishes (I loved the mini banh mi). In the main course, my favorite was hands down the hot dog ice cream - I had no idea it was possible to create the flavors of a hot dog in ice cream form and make it so... GOOD! Really all the dishes spoke for themselves, with the tomatoes and vegetables being some of the better ones. Of course, there were a few things in the meats that left something to be desired but nonetheless they were still delicious and I would not be able to pinpoint what else to change. It is truly a creative venture and one to try if you have not been yet. I have never been at a dinner before that was so intimate with primarily strangers who all convene together to enjoy gastronomy. The atmosphere created by Georgia is truly unique in that it create a safe space for people to talk about their lives and their love for food while enjoying each bite. This is just my opinion and I hate to write this, but I do not understand the great reviews. And I think if I was researching...I would like to know before spending $$$$. For me, Georgia Boy is for fun, not for eating the food. I wanted to truly love this place, was really excited. Unfortunately, I think the food, or at least the taste of food, takes a back seat here. More flash than substance. The tasting menu was probably the most tasteless tasting menu I have tried. I enjoyed maybe the first amuse bouche (soup) and that was basically it. None of the dishes were truly offensive...except for the hot dog. I used to joke that you could put caviar on a shoe and I would eat it...think I would have preferred a shoe. Who the heck wants to bite into a frozen hot dog?! Processed meat should not be creamed into ice cream. I still shudder thinking about it. Sure the gimmick is cool but no, just no. Same for the cereal...cute but...what the heck am I eating?! And it tastes the way it looks. It does not taste good. I get artistry, but why do so many chefs try to act like they are creating dishes for the old navy version of Bocuse d'Or? I can appreciate a chef's skill on dishes I may not usually eat or like...but this food, except for the last dish on the Buford Hwy, seemed to be lacking good flavor... Textures were muddled, oily, mushy, unpleasant. And...hate to say it...but of the dishes...were they that creative? Reminded me a bit of other dishes...e.g., bacon cotton candy or whipped sugar (forgot the menu) reminded me of Jose Andres fois gras cotton candy. And didn't Richard Blais do a hot dog with liquid nitrogen mustard on Top Chef? Bet his hot dog was better since it was hot. Anyway think this would be a good place for a new date...interactive, conversation starter,etc. Anyone wanting a show. But if you are looking for a good tasting menu for food...I would spend my money elsewhere. So many other places in ATL. This tasting menu's price point is a rip-off...felt like a joke on diners. A wonderful and fun experience. More than just a meal, Georgia Boy was an adventure and we had a blast! The food was innovative and among many dishes not to be forgotten, the southern style snapper prepared in a Thai curry was perhaps the best fish I have eaten in Atlanta. This place is not cheap. After making the reservation on Resy I got an email saying they were increasing their prices by 15 a person. Ok, just another 60 dollars. At the end of the meal they asked for a tip. Yet the website said all service was included. Waiter said that was a mistake. So meal ended up costing over 400 more than what I was expecting. Was the food presented nicely? Yes. Was it a good experience besides the extra 400 dollars. Yes. Cool room with a curtain to start out in before going to the eat in kitchen area. I hate eat in open kitchens. Nobody wants to see inconsistency in who wears gloves, who does not, who wipes their hand on a towel that has already been used. All staff were nice and friendly. Some of the dishes were amazing, some were just pretty. If you like tasting menus, this was a pretty good one. And yes it takes about 3 hours. read more

What an interesting experience from Georgia Boy. I believe in Atlanta, Georgia Boy is trying to make a Michelin Star, so we wanted to check them out before it actually happened. I would definitely want to start off and say that during the night there were some experiences that were super unexpected. There were of course a few hiccups as far as the dishes that were served and bites that I had, but overall I think from the get go it was definitely interesting. I will also say that this review is spoiler free. The night started off with free bubbly at the bar and we were then taken to the back. We were introduced and then we were asked if we wanted to do wine pairings, and for those who don't drink alcohol, had non-alcoholic pairings. Our group did both (132, 82, respectively). The tasting was 219/person, but tip was also included. Here we got some beginner courses: 1. A Study of Summer Corn - Huitlacoche churro, chips, salsa, guac 2. Road Down Buford Highway - Scallion Pancake, Pork Belly in chili garlic sauce, and Vietnamese iced coffee 3. Memories of Summer - Tomato Sandwich along with a palette cleanser During this time we got to know the history of Georgia Boy and also the Chef's childhood. He went over his inspiration in creating Georgia Boy and what he was aiming for on representing his childhood growing up here. The Road Down Buford Highway, was interesting. The execution of this dish didn't hit it for me though. The scallion pancake I thought was way too salty and missed the whole point of a scallion pancake...the scallions. It was too small of a bite but it was just overly salted. The pork belly was complex in flavoring, but it was just okay. However, the Vietnamese Coffee biter was the winner in my opinion of this set of three bites. The coffee was there and it mixed with the cream that was inside. Memories of Summer, the tomato sandwich ish like looks like a macron, but it wasn't. It was deceiving, but when I bit into it, the flavors of tomatoes wasn't there. I could see what they were going for, but I just couldn't taste the tomatoes. It was just a bite, but it was okay. Next we were then led to a new room with more seating. Here we got all of the rest of our tasting course. I won't go through dish by dish, but overall it was a great experience. Some dishes I thought were overly salty, which to me kind of let me down because I know that for the price that we were paying I don't think that should have happened. Name of dishes: 4. Spicy Tuna - watermelon, shiso, soy, wasabi 5. Maine Lobster - coffee, cauliflower, vanilla 6. Heirloom Tomato Focaccia - Georgia olive oil, bruschetta butter 7. Meat & Potatoes - dry-aged ribeye, caviar, local potato 8. Sweet Potato - asher blue cheese, benton's bacon cotton candy, maple 9. Southern Vegetable Thali - Chatel Farms beef cheek, Border Springs lamb, green peanut, tomato 10. Marigold Sorbet - Ga olive oil, peach, grown and foraged herbs 11. Lick the Beater - lemon pound cake 12. Banana Ice Cream Cake - coffee, biscoff, chocolate, salted caramel 13. A Gift to Remember Us By - assorted mignardise The wine pairing for the price we paid, I expected more per pour, but it was very minimal. The service was great, but I expected a bit more attention especially since the amount of servers there were. I do have to recognize that there is a space challenge as far as the restaurant and how that goes, however I thought it was very an intimate setting. You're also probably wondering if I really took down that detailed notes of what I had. No, I didn't. I do absolutely love that they printed off cards of what we experienced that evening and that it was personalized. Those who had the wine tastings, and those who didn't had different cards. I thought that was a very nice touch and makes my life easier writing reviews! You will also notice that I'm going to keep the name of the dishes off the pictures so you can experience it yourself and come to your own conclusions. Overall, I can see why Georgia Boy is trying to contend to get a Michelin Star. I have been to several in my lifetime, so I am excited to see if this restaurant does get a star. Would I come back here? I don't think so, but I wanted the experience of something that is in the backyard (so to speak) and also we loved the company that we went with. For the price that we paid, and what I have had before, I think they sort of just missed the mark for me in the category of fine dining. There was nothing wrong with the service, but the food just didn't hit the marks for me. However, I think with a revolving menu Georgia Boy will get better and if they do get a star I think it's definitely a possibility to come back to see what they changed. read more

Georgia Boy was a cool experience, with just a few flaws. When you're talking about an experiencial tasting menu, emphasis needs to be placed on the enjoyment of the food over and above the playfulness of the dish. In a few instances, it seemed like they were trying to fit a dish inside their concept rather than taking a good dish and turning it into a concept. I won't go dish-by-dish (see menu and pictures for the whole rundown)...but an example of the above was the tomato sandwich with garden hose granita. The chef introduced it as his childhood on a plate - his grandfather made them tomato sandwiches, and they would drink from their garden hose. The sandwich was a tomato macron, which tasted a lot like ketchup and the granita tasted a little like salty dishwater with lime. It seemed like they came up with a concept and played with the dish until they could get it to fit, rather than the other way around where they have a great dish and figure out a fun way to plate/present it. Other dishes were resounding successes - the simple peach brioche with herb butter and peach jam was one of the best bites of the night. The steak tartare with potatoes and potato foam was really delicious. The duck was perfectly cooked and seasoned and served over farro that had the texture of silky risotto. Another issue we had was what we got for the price. For $780 (2 people for dinner with optional wine pairing and gratuity), the portions of both food and wine were very small. And I'm not complaining about the price - I paid more for Alinea and have no regrets. We left a bit unsatisfied in terms of the volume of each course/glass. All on all, I don't regret going to GB and taking in the experience. I hate to compare them to the 3-Michelin Star Alinea, but they invite the comparison with the style and format of their service. GB is probably the most inventive and playful dining experience we've had in Atlanta, but it's not the best meal we've had here (see The Deer and Dove). And it's not the best meal we've had in this format (Alinea in Chicago, Taniere³ in Quebec). But it's a solid introduction for Atlanteans. read more

This may be a close contender for one of the first Michelin stars in Atlanta. However, I'm not 100% sure that it compares with others I have experienced. Overall I enjoyed my experience here. I like how there is a distinct part 1 and part of 2 feel to the whole experience. Staff was friendly and knowledgeable. However, whenever we were talked to and the staff member was at the other side of the table, it was really hard to hear. I missed quite a lot since it is loud in the kitchen. I do think that the food was quite salty. I woke up super thirsty in the middle of the night. My favorite of the night was the heirloom tomato focaccia. That bread was perfect. A close second is the churro. At the end you get a small gift with an assortment of treats, including macaron and chocolate and a personalized menu. I really wish Atlanta had the Michelin Star rating system because this restaurant has too few reviews and too little visibility. I think everyone should try it if they can afford it. 15 course chef's tasting menu for only $215/person with tips included in the price. The experience is more than worth the cost. If you have dietary restrictions, you can email the staff stating what they are, and they will respond lightning-fast saying if they can accommodate for you or not. Our reservation was made last-minute (6 hours before the seating time), but they were still able to account for my boyfriend not eating pork, which is very considerate of them. The wine pairing is an additional charge to your bill, but the sommelier brings out wine intermittently throughout the whole meal. Please note that if your party is smaller than 8 people, then you will be seated with other parties who made reservations. I'm pretty introverted, so the prospect of this happening made me nervous. So to help me loosen up, I ordered a drink from the cocktail menu while we were waiting in the lobby of Southern Belle. The cocktail menu was a bit pricier than the main tasting menu and less worth it in my opinion. I ordered the Jodie Foster because it had caramelized banana in it. I didn't taste any banana, and it was extremely bitter-forward. But alcohol is alcohol, and I spent 18.75 on it already. Our reservation included 6 people, including me and my significant other. We talked amongst ourselves a bit and enjoyed the food together, making comments about how elegant it looked and how decadent it tasted. The entire tasting menu took about 3 hours to get through. Our reservation was at 9pm, and we were out of the restaurant around 12am. Like others have said, we were first seated at an alcove called "The Library" in the back of the restaurant, where a curtain separated the Georgia Boy diners from the hustle and bustle of the kitchen staff. We had three or four courses and a round of complimentary sparkling wine in The Library before we were escorted into the Main Tasting Room, where we were able to speak with the chef and watch him work directly. The ambiance was impeccable and very personal. Overall an amazing and exquisite experience. I'll let the photos speak for themselves. I believe the tasting menu changes by the season, so what you see in this review might not be what they serve as you're reading this! That's the beauty of adventurous chefs, they're always experimenting with new things. Honestly, the food is incredibly playful and wonderful - the wine pairings were thoughtful. Our comments are 100% based on the front of the house. We called 40 minutes before our seating to let them know that we were stuck in traffic and running 10 minutes late. They told us they had to start on time (no worries - we get it) but then also told us they wouldn't save the first course for us. They lied about a food code restriction to justify it (non-sushi restaurants can't package raw fish - the course we missed was a tomato sandwich). We rushed to get there as fast as we could and then were forced to wait in the lounge. The seating is very communal - your experience will depend heavily on the other guests. Finally, we ordered an extra drink at the end, and in spite of spending nearly $1500 on a dinner for two, we were told to move to the lounge quickly because they had another seating - felt very much like a don't let the door hit you on your way out moment. It's a shame - dinner was amazing and the chef/somm/staff at dinner were great...the front of the house needs serious attention. read more

The hostesses were not accommodating to our party for having a baby with us. Saying it was a "fire safety" issue and that they wanted everyone to be safe from open flames and sharp objects. Neither of which, expect a small steak knife during one course, were present. The baby that accompanied us, stayed in its carrier and slept the entire experience. We had to convince the hostesses to let us bring the baby back to the experience and before doing so, they said there were two options. We could leave and not get our deposit back or the mother and baby could sit at a table alone. I scoured the Georgia Boy website and nowhere that I could find, did it say that babies are not allowed in the restaurant. Completely ridiculous. Waiting staff was wonderful and knowledgeable. The intimate experience is worth it for a special night out with friends, a partner or anyone else who enjoys a whimsical experience. Service was top notch beginning with a cocktail or mocktail on the main bar area. You wait for the full table before they move you to the pre-dinner area where you delight in 'snacks' - one/two bite courses in an intimate gathering. There was a variety of flavors and tastes that I imagine change seasonal (not confirmed, but assume). From there, you are escorted into the back kitchen to see the chefs in action. More courses, more beautiful plates, and more delightful tastes welcome you as you go through a journey of Georgia and Chef Joey's story. The service continues to shine throughout the evening. I've enjoyed GB on several occasions now, and I'm always delighted with the range of creative, expert dishes that celebrate local farms and ingredients with an international flair. Chef Joey is an Authentic Atlanta star. I will also share that the dedicated, articulate staff delivers a hip, progressive blend of service, storytelling and warm hospitality. Complete with tattoos and piercings behind the khaki aprons. Most unique is the speakeasy vibe and entrance to Chef Joeys culinary sandbox, from the library. I mean that "Buford Highway" plate gets you started on a magic carpet ride of culinary adventure. Once you are in the inner sanctum, hold onto your seat for a multi-course menu with superb wine pairings fit for the most discerning foodies. This is where I believe Michelin reviews are not perfect. Georgia Boy should have received the highly touted and desired Michelin Star along with other counterparts in the Atlanta area such as Lazy Betty. Atlanta, in my opinion, still not as competitive as NYC or other major cities where Michelin starred restaurants reside. However, there are a few stand outs, and when the list was announced, I was shocked that this restaurant did not receive a star. Georgia Boy's culinary skill, technique, art/visual, service, etc. exemplify a Michelin Star. Again, shocked and learned through this new list for Atlanta that Michelin reviewers are human beings after all. Georgia Boy is a speakeasy style restaurant where a set of 8 can make reservation at certain slots during the evening. The restaurant is embedded inside Southern Belle, and the concept is unique in itself for Atlanta. The owner and executive chef created Southern Belle dedicating it to his wife, Emily Ward, and Joey Ward, the executive chef is the Georgia Boy. I find it romantic. The menu changes depending on the actual season. Of course this is a multi-course meal, so here are some memorable items. The restaurant first place you in the "library" and it is pretty cozy. People around me started to wonder if this is where they will be eating. The answer is no. This is just to go over expectations and pre-tasting items. The blueberry pancake was very unique. The pancake was in a flute like glass and had a piece of "blueberry," which ended up being the blueberry reduction pancake. Pleasantly surprised. Then, the hostess walks you through a murphy door, and you get placed into the kitchen where you will start your real experience. "A Trip Down Buford HWY" changes depending on the season, but what the executive chef does is he picks cuisines from Buford Hwy in Atlanta and makes a fusion based course. He nails this quite well. Heirloom Tomato Focaccia was a big surprise. He basically reduces the tomatoes and rebuilds the tomato back up. In the bottom of the tomato, the "ground or soil" where the tomato is grown from, is an interesting artistic expression. Perfectly balances the acidity from the tomato. Using all Georgia ingredients, including Georgia made olive oil, you can really feel the chef's intent to highlight Georgia's produce. Not sure if the restaurant is still making this, but caviar within an egg yolk... just simply amazing. When I first took that bite, my tongue was blown away. Initially, from a visual perspective, it looked like an over-easy egg. Obviously, it was not. When I split the "yellow yolk" in half, there was caviar. Just brilliant combination and artful way to present and surprise the patron. Again, the menu changes so what I had may not be there when someone tries it. However, I know that Georgia Boy will always have a duck dish. The duck cooked to perfection, crispy on the outside with perfect seasoning and juicy and savory in the inside. The duck is glazed perfectly with other accompaniments. Most likely, you will also have a dessert that is presented to you in a beater. There is a story behind the dessert, and it is a unique way of eating a dessert. Just overall great flavor and it is tribute to the chef's memory when he ate cake mixes or cake through the beater at home. Overall, there are about 15ish courses, so obviously, I can't list them all, but the theme is consistent through every season. I highly recommend this restaurant. If someone asks, top two restaurants in Atlanta that resembles other competitive Michelin Star restaurants with advanced technique and art from other cities such as New York City, San Francisco, Chicago, Seoul, Rome, Paris, London, Tokyo, Vienna, Berlin, etc., I say Georgia Boy is one of them. read more

I'm a few months late on this, ate there in March. We needed a reservation for chef's table. We were a group of 4 and 2 are vegetarians. Even though there were a lot of mushroom dishes, they were different mushrooms so different flavor and they were prepared differently also affecting flavor. We also did the beverage pairing for each of the 15 courses and I think the non-alcoholic drinks paired better and tasted incredible. We started at the back of the restaurant behind some curtains and with champagne. The first few courses there were pretty unique in presentation: honey ham cotton candy machine, chicken and waffles cone and the prosthetic arm was the best part. The server Jessica was very patient with me trying to get a good shot of her opening the bookcase door to the kitchen and chef's table. Smoked salmon, dippin dots, so creative and plated nicely. A sweet potato milk roll was ITS OWN course. Charleston sea beans, nori pavlova, Maine lobster, beef and broccoli, pig and his truffle, back in black, dark chocolate, red velvet cake batter...all smelled and tasted amazing and the presentation pretty, clean, unique, and interactive. What an amazing experience from right when you get seated to the very end. The hostess, server, sommelier and chefs were all so nice and seemed to really enjoy what they are doing and the small amount of guests per seating (8) makes it feel super intimate and gives you a chance to meet some new people. The presentation and taste of everything was so beautiful and delicious! I did get the beverage pairing and my husband got the zero-proof (non-alcoholic) beverage pairing, which to be quite honest I enjoyed his drinks was more than mine BUT the last wine was so good I bought two bottles to take home! I usually like to write in detail about every dish but I rather not ruin the surprise for future guests because it was all so amazing. Omg if I could give this restaurant 50 stars I would! This is the perfect spot for a special occasion or fun group outing. It is not cheap, but it's so much more than a meal. It's an experience. Each course was delicious and presented impeccably. The service was outstanding. Loved the wine sommelier. She had a fab personality and was super knowledgeable. The mystery and magic were abundant and so fun! Hands down my fav Atlanta dining experience to date! Only tip to GA Boy is pls consider adding decaf espresso or coffee to go with the offer of shots of espresso.
