I say hello are you taking new patients, the woman responded "yes", I followed with I need an adjustment today if possible but I'll take the next available appointment, I'm in pain and have discomfort in my neck, shoulders and hips. The woman immediately asked me about insurance, I provided her the insurance information but informed her my policy did not take effect until February and that I would be paying out of pocket. Immediately the woman says "we don't take your insurance", I said no problem I'll pay out of pocket. Immediately the woman say "well we're about to close but I can refer you to Dr. Connolly at the Spine Center, he takes your insurance ". I said I understand but I'm in pain and I'm paying out of pocket as my insurance does not take effect until February, the woman writes Dr. Connolly's name on the back of her business card and says "he can help you, we're about to close and I'm going on vacation so I can't schedule you". I said thank you and enjoy your vacation, I walk out the door, drive over to visit Dr. Connolly at the Spine Center... it's closed. I'm not sure why I was dismissed as I was at Kingstowne Family Chiropractic which had such great reviews but this is certainly not a practice that cares about a person being in pain and having chiropractic discomfort. * I would also like to add, I think the majority of the reviews on Yelp are fake, with the exception of my recent review, the reviews for the business are all from years ago, all 5 star, and the reviewers have little to no pictures or other reviews/contributions... that is definitely a red flag.

By the fall, when I tried the eighth new pillow and still felt uncomfortably stiff, I knew something needed to change. My question was: chiropractor or physical therapist? I opted for Dr. Shields' office because they take my insurance and the lovely receptionist was able to schedule me for the next day. Dr. Shields really impressed me with the amount of time he gave me. He talked with me first. Then, without even touching my neck, he was able to pinpoint the exact locus of pain, which made me feel like he really heard and understood. He adjusted me, gave me several exercises (showed me how to do them, watched as I did them and offered feedback and pointers), and gave me a pillow recommendation. I felt a bit better the following week, and after the third visit, I was virtually pain free. I am happy to report that I have no more pain and am working hard to adjust my posture as he recommended. I only wish I had seen him sooner. The office staff is efficient and friendly, and there's no hassle over insurance. Then I realized that although they are valid for the individuals who had the poor experience, yet the reviews do not reflect the true standing of the entire practice. My mom recently visited the practice. Both Cheyenne and Ben helped her relieve their shoulder and neck pain. She was able to sleep better and relax better as a result of the hour-long body massage. My own symptoms have also got better, and now I am on the maintenance basis to prevent my body from worsening. The deep medical massage has helped me relax and relieve the tightness on my shoulders. Dr. Barnes is skilled, and also his focus is not on money. You laugh, most likely. No, his interest is in wellness. One way he shows this is by providing a program for paying if your insurance won't cover costs. For me this means only $5 over my very low insurance co-pay. I think it's amazing that he provides this service because it means everyone can get care. But I talk about money when you probably want to know about his expertise. I am 73 years old and getting creaky. He has to come up with creative ways to adjust my hips because I have a 'trick' knee. He seems to know exactly where the pain is and puts his hands on it. He's fast and so accurate in his procedures that there is no need to just keep coming back week after week--unless he is addressing a chronic issue. Even then he weans you from his care.His aim is wellness, not attendance, so he wants you out of there and not dragging yourself in every week. I had gone several months since an adjustment, but the other day I was in a lot of pain. Dr. Barnes saw me that day luckily and I walked out with only residual muscle aching.
