We definitely enjoyed our stay at the friendly little Back Bay Inn. They have about 12 or so rooms and all have either a balcony/lanai or a fireplace. We stayed in a second floor room (9) with a balcony overlooking the water. Well, it was over looking the water in the morning but the afternoon we arrived it was overlooking mud as it was low tide. (see my pics) It was pretty surreal to look out and see boats just sitting atop mud. But, in the morning the tide had rolled in and yes there was water. And, the view was really lovely and peaceful. We we able to lay in bed and watch the water. We then went down to the "Gathering Room" and grabbed some coffee to sip on our balcony as we had done with the wine & cheese they serve in the evenings. We found the Inn very charming indeed. Also, there are pictures of all of the rooms on line so you can pick and choose as we did. read more

Bottom Line: A beautiful place to stay Wife is about 7 months preggo and was in need of some relaxation after chasing around our three year old, so I booked us a couple nights here. We got a beautiful room upstairs with a few of the bay and proceeded to relax. The service was fantastic as well. While checking in, I noticed that they had wine and snacks set out. I poured myself a half glass of red as that was all that was left. As we were checking in, the nice lady behind the counter asked me if that was the last of the red wine. She ran into the back and uncorked a new bottle and poured me a huge glass! That was a really nice touch - she obviously didn't have to do that but she did and having a nice 'wine glow' right out of the car after a two hour drive is awesome. There is a loveseat/swing outside out door that we relaxed in one morning and savored our coffee for once in a few years. Actually, I dont drink coffee and wife obvious cant... so it was actually Tea but it sounds better if you say coffee, right? Doesn't tea sound a little pretentious? Hmmm, well anyways. With the reservation we got breakfast coupons for the cafe across the way, which was nice and you can read my review for that as well on their yelp page. There are a bunch of other places to eat within a few blocks walking distance, and there is a TON to see if you just want to walk around a little which I always do. Loved this little get away treasure in Los Osos! My wife and I celebrated our anniversary and spent the night at this inn. After we checked in and went to our room, there was a bottle of complementary wine on the coffee table for our anniversary! The staff is all very friendly and helpful. The location is beautiful. Our room had an Oceanside view. We enjoyed our coffee on the deck outside in the garden area, with a waterfront view, and beautiful scenery. We're definitely coming back. read more

OH My Gosh - we loved this place. It is charmingly tucked into the bay in Los Osos/Baywood Park. The grounds are beautifully landscaped, and the labyrinth called to me each morning. The inn is walking distance to everything in this small area of town including great breakfast and dinner spots. The Monday Farmers Market was pretty cool as well. We stayed in the Cabana (dog-friendly with tile flooring) with a good sized living area, well-appointed bathroom (no tub) and comfortable bed. Windows open on a rainy day made for a cozy lovely visit. I would return here again and again. read more

The pros: The surroundings and grounds are stunning! Staying at the hotel gives you access to sitting areas with really great views of the lake. And it is conveniently situated walking distance from a few good bars/eateries! There is a really great cafe and restaurant next to the hotel (share the same parking lot) It was really nice to be able to get out and do everything on foot. There's also pretty decent wifi and the beds/pillows are super comfy! The cons: The rooms are pretty small and should be remodeled as some of the furniture, fixtures and appliances are old and gritty. (We stayed on the second floor honeymoon suite) Im not sure if it's that I'm weird but I found it pretty gross that the mini fridge and the coffee maker are 'in' the bathroom... and the walls are VERY thin. Could hear our neighbors conversations and other activities :X Oh and there's one older lady that's not very welcoming (actually grumpy) at the front desk.. but the rest of the staff was wonderful. Given that the setting was so beautiful and the small local cafe/restaurants were such a pleasure to experience, I would be happy to return and would recommend staying here. read more

We booked here and booked room #9 based on Yelp reviews and it was such a nice stay. This hotel is in a very quiet area right on the water, we had a balcony that overlooked the bay. There is a place to walk along the shore right at the front of the hotel, along with beautiful gardens. The staff here is super super pleasant and easy to deal with. The room is older but clean, everything was clean and fresh. We stayed upstairs and noise was not an issue. They had a wine hour at 5:30 and we stopped in for a glass of wine, that was a nice touch. We also enjoyed the breakfast at the cafe that is right in front of this hotel (included in stay)- WAYYYYY more than we expected- everyone was so nice and the food was good. In fact, we bought scones there too and I will dream about my blackberry scone for a long time. If you want a super relaxing, laid back stay outside the hustle and bustle of town, this is a wonderful place to stay. I liked opening the door on the balcony and sitting in the breeze. read more

Who knew such a little treasure was sitting in the town I grew up in? I thought it would be nice to alleviate my family from their hotel responsibilities during Christmastime and get a room at the Back Bay Inn. My aunt had stayed and loved it, so why not? I was not disappointed. We had an amazing room with a lanai facing the bay our first couple of nights; it was bliss. I could sit outside on that little patio for days. I also stayed in an upstairs room with a nice cozy fireplace, still with a view of that amazing bay. Both rooms provided very relaxing ways to end family-filled days. The rooms are simple and cute; they are not luxury by any means, but they are definitely comfortable. They are not the most sound-proof rooms either, but the grounds stay relatively quiet. Also, they provide surprisingly good toilet paper. The staff was always very nice and accommodating. Plus you get a free breakfast from the Back Bay Cafe! And if the cafe is closed, they make a variety of delicious quiches for your nomming pleasure! Staying here really gave me a new appreciation for where I grew up! It is very nice property that is a little older but clean and neat with beautiful grounds and lovely views...a great place to get away from the crowds of nearby beach towns. Wonderful Little getaway! So quite and serene. I stayed two nights in the Studio and it was very clean and cozy. Only issue I had was the internet was very hit and miss inside the room as well as around their property. Hence the reason for the 4 star vs 5 star review. I tried the internet at the cafe, in the garden and in the wine room with no luck. I managed to get internet on my second day with my laptop close to the wall on the desk in the corner of the room. I loved the evening wine and mingling with the other guests. The wine room was connected to the main office. You could have your wine and snacks inside the room or take it out to the garden area, down by the water or even to your room. The morning breakfast at Back Bay Cafe was superb (a few feet away from the lodging areas). You received a breakfast voucher for each nights stay and there was a specialized menu to choose from. Menu selection was small but I had the egg scramble which was delicious and filling (2 eggs on a bed of fresh spinach with 2 slices of bacon, sour dough toast, a side of fruit and a cup of orange juice). Location was only 15 minutes from Morro Bay and 30 minutes from Hearst Castle which were the two reasons I chose this spot. Throughout my entire stay the staff was friendly and very helpful. Will definitely go back again, in fact I'm already planning my next trip!. read more

The reason I gave this place three stars was for the lovely view. We had the best part of our stay here walking along the (somewhat mucky) beach, and sitting on the back lawn in the adirondack chairs. The wine was cheap but decent, and the appetizers consisted of cheese, crackers, and assorted olives. It was a nice snack before dinner. The rooms are nothing fancy, and the bed we had was terrible. It sagged in the middle so badly that we were both up at about 5am with back pain. Due to our early start, we had to wait a bit to use our breakfast vouchers (totally worth it), and while we waited we found some amazing hot cocoa at a tiny place across the street. The staff was ok--the guy who checked us in was kind of creepy in an has-been surfer-ish sort of way, and the woman in the morning was a little too businesslike. All in all, I wouldn't stay here again due to the lack of sleep caused by the awful mattress, but if you're back is a trooper the view is totally worth it. read more

Beautiful! My wife and I stayed here on our way up north along the coast line. Stayed in room #1 because it's the only room on the ground without anyone above us. All I can say is thank you!! When I was in the break room, I could hear every footstep upstairs. I am a very light sleeper and look specifically for rooms like #1 to stay in. We had an extremely pleasant short stay. Room 1 was perfect, could not ask for anything better. Enjoyed a quiet and peaceful night and took our breakfast vouchers right next door to this adorable little breakfast shack. A+++. We loved this mom & pop little inn and would definitely recommend anybody to stay here. We didn't have a view due to gloom but loved it anyways. read more

What a end of a fantastic vacation, and refreshing room, considering some of the places we stayed. They were very polite, and helpful, and actually honored my Military ID. The room was so spacious, and relaxing. Slept so well, in the enormous King size bed. The only let down, in which is not the Inn's issue is the lack of respect of tenants, whom want to stand out your back door and brag about their late night ventures. Really go back to college, and hoop and holler; 06:30am? The cafe had some of the best Cappuccino's going we had to have two. The serenity of the bay is so nice, as long as people respect one another peacefulness. We will come again, they even gave me a glass of wine when I checked in, that's hospitality. They offered breakfast with the room, which was a welcomed meal, because it was home cooked right there while you waited. We shall be back. read more

Having no quibble with the other reviews, I'll just give a few supplementary pointers. (1) If you are there for romance, I highly recommend Room 15. It is at the end, so there is more privacy than the other rooms; no room above it, so there is no noise from heavy walkers; the shortest of walks to the office or the reception; and best of all, it has huge floor-to-ceiling mirrored glass windows overlooking the water. With the front wall consisting mostly of mirrored glass, you can have complete confidence that you can enjoy any "adult activity," while having an exquisite view of the bay. Watching the occasional guest wander by, fully visible to us but completely oblivious to any "adult activity" going on a few feet away, just added to the excitement WARNING: be careful to lose that "complete confidence" when the sun goes down and the room lights come on. At that point, as we were to discover, the mirrored glass becomes simply "glass." (2) There is something called "June Gloom," and we arrived just in time for it on May 31st. It is a season where there is a lot of fog. So, when we arrived, there were just a few hours of daylight, where the waterfront was fog-enshrouded and not very visible. The fog lifted in the morning, giving us a nice view of boats...mired in mud, as by then, the tide had gone out and took all water with it. (3) The flower gardens blew me away! I'm not a flower-person, except in the "Peace, brother, want to get stoned?" sense, but even I was overcome by the beauty and variety of the flowers. I'm not sure what it's like during the rest of the year, but they were gorgeous during our stay. (4) Their daily late afternoon Wine and Cheese reception is a nice way to meet other people, if others show up, and to snack on Trader Joe's cheese and Two-Buck Chuck (Charles Shaw wine). (5) Their directions from the north includes, "Go South on Hwy 1 about 2 miles and take the Los Osos/Baywood Park exit. Turn right and follow South Bay Blvd (along the waterfront) for 2 miles to Santa Ysabel." Note that, what they call a "waterfront" is what I would call a marsh. (Waterfront, to me, connotes water, boats, docks, etc.) Also, what they call "Santa Ysabel" is really "Santa Ysabel AVENUE." When I first saw Santa Ysabel Avenue, I thought, "Good, we must be getting close to Santa Ysabel," which I had incorrectly assumed to be a place. read more

My husband and I stayed at Back Bay Inn last weekend and really enjoyed the beautiful gardens, atmosphere and cheerful, helpful employees. The location can't be beat - we opened our door and the bay was only 40 feet away. The garden is lovely and well taken care of. We went to this Dive looking bar about a 1/2 a block away called The Merrimaker, which we thought would be a joke, BUT, were blown away by a very tight 8 piece jazz/funk band playing old school funk like the Meters and Stevie Wonder! Whoa! Who would have thought? The complaint is, the beds had very hard, uncomfortable pillows, the free breakfast was fairly mediocre (guess you get what you pay for). The downstairs rooms are very small and not very private. We heard upstairs ws nicer. But definitely a great place with good hiking and beaches nearby. read more

This a great little inn to stay at for a couple nights. Here are some highlights. The views from the rooms are awesome. The rooms have big windows with blinds, so you can go between the great view, and privacy. It is right on the water, and they have a great lounging area for relaxing by the water. For the 21 and ups, they provide complimentary wine and snacks in the evening, which is a nice way to kick off the evening. They also include a real breakfast at the cafe next door, free with your stay. Great coffee and food to really start your day right. The rooms are quite sizeable, and bigger than the pictures made them appear. Although they are a tad dated, the bed is comfy, WiFi is fast, and the TV has many channels if you just want to veg out on the bed. Overall I definitely recommend staying here. I recently stayed here with my boyfriend. We booked a last minute spontaneous night here because we love the Central Coast! We used to live there and love visiting when we get the chance. When booking the room, we were informed by multiple staff members that the room wasn't their best and that we might hear footsteps from the people above us, so I can't say I wasn't warned about anything. Our room was on the first floor and extremely close to the Merrimaker (nicknamed the Marriage Breaker and literally the Wikipedia definition of a dive bar. Eek!). The solid wood entry door, while it was pretty to look at, was extremely loud and I felt bad for everyone in the building when I opened and closed it. The actual room itself wasn't bad. It was a bit outdated but still clean. We were visiting Los Osos to explore the outdoors, so we didn't spend too much time in the room. From the time we did spend in there, I will tell you that the walls were extremely thin!!! We heard people going up and down the outdoor stairs. We heard the table and chairs moving in the unit above us. We heard multiple conversations. Oh, and we also heard the live band and bar-goers at the Merrimaker all night. My boyfriend closed the door that led to the kitchen before we went to sleep. When we woke up the next morning, the door was locked!!! We 100% did not lock it. We don't know why or how the door locked. All of my personal belongings were in the kitchen, so I could not get ready for the day in the time I had planned. We talked to the guy at the front desk and he did not know where the key for the kitchen door was. He was just as perplexed as we were. He ended up climbing through the kitchen window to unlock the door without even notifying me beforehand!!! Honestly, I could do nothing but laugh. Because where else would that be acceptable? Good thing I looked somewhat presentable! Our breakfast at the Back Bay Cafe took longer than expected, as well. It also cost us $4 and we don't know why. Isn't it supposed to be free? Luckily, I spoke to the front desk staff after all of this and was able to get a small discount and an extension on my check out time. It was an interesting experience. This place really has a lot of potential. It just needs some love...and maybe a little bit of insulation. read more

He booked us into the Back Bay Inn and has forever secured his status as a hopeless romantic. The Back Bay Inn is perfect for a quiet getaway. Our front door opened up onto a small stretch of lawn and then - ocean. Sure the tide went out the next morning and left mud behind, but what loving couple doesn't know the benefits of a quick mudbath? Fantastic for the skin! The room was exceedingly comfortable, reasonably priced and included a cafe breakfast. Our hosts were friendly, hospitable, and knowledgeable of the area. Five enthusiastic stars. read more

My husband and I stayed there for President's Day weekend. We checked in and the guy who was working the desk had that lovely laid back SLO county attitude that makes the area always a pleasure to be in. They were pretty full for a holiday weekend so we stayed at the little motel behind their building. The room was large, clean, and comfortable. They called them garden rooms but they only faced the small parking lot. Breakfast is included in the little cafe next to the building and it was lovely when it wasn't raining to sit outside and people watch. They have great coffee and it was fun chatting up the locals. The grounds are amazing! I grew up in Los Osos and I can't believe what an beautiful job they have done with their gardening, truly an oasis. The only reason it didn't receive 5 stars is because we didn't get to stay in the main building which was just a little more in price but more lovely. Also, the beds were a little hard for my liking but that's just me. I would stay there again and try and reserve something in the main building. read more

If you are heading down to San Luis Obispo or Pismo Beach, this is a great place to stay. I stayed at a ground floor room and turns out the ONLY exit is through the glass door which has the view of Morro Bay . Totally private, no need to walk by a hallway, you can keep the door open and enjoy a cup of tea, breakfast.....the clean spacious room made me double check if I've really paid for this room. You get a coupon at the small cafe next door for free breakfast, they can also deliver it to your room before noon. Wide selection of choices and if you don't want the free choices, they take $6 off per breakfast coupon if you want to have lunch there instead. Also a pizza joint, bar, liquor store, Thai food all within one block. The One Star is taken away because the walls are super thin, you can hear every motion from upstairs and it did bother my sleep. If you are lucky enough to have nobody occpuying the room upstairs, it will be a Five Star stay. read more

What a great place to stay for a quiet, peaceful, and relaxing few days. We stayed in room 106, which had doors that open up to a great view of the bay. There is a small grassy area right outside our room with chairs where you can sit and look out over the bay. The grounds are meticulously taken care of with beautiful plants and shrubs. The owner checked us in and couldn't have been nicer, you can tell she loves the place. You get free breakfast at the cafe next door with plenty of options to choose from. There are beautiful views everywhere you look. We took a walk from the grounds around the bay to a great boardwalk through a small forest like setting which ended at the water where you can sit and listen/watch the many diff species of birds. There are a few restaurants within a 5 min walking distance and there is a restaurant on site as well. I highly recommend Back Bay Inn for a very relaxing experience. read more

I absolutely love this place. My wife and I recently went for 3 days on our honeymoon, and this is the perfect setting for falling in love. The rooms were very comfortable and our room had a private patio just feet from the waters edge. The wood Adirondack chairs on the lawn made for some great time relaxing in the sun. I also enjoyed the complementary breakfast at the cafe every morning. The prices were also awesome, almost 40% less than our first nights in carmel. I would highly recommend to anyone who wants a nice quiet spot. read more

My wife and I had a great stay at this place. We were in room 6 with a great view. Apparently, they recently landscaped with succulents and other bright plants. They offer a wine reception for a few hours in the evening with olives, hummus, and other assorted snacks that were delicious. The hotel staff were quite welcoming and warm. The bed was comfortable and the room was clean. It's close to some great hiking at Montana de Oro and is within a 15-25 minute drive to Morro Bay's Embarcadero and downtown SLO. What a lovely place we discovered! We will definitely come back. We stayed in room 15 on the end for our anniversary and it was super private. Great king size bed with tons of different of pillows. Super comfy bathrobes and a great little patio to sit and watch the bay from. The views can't be beat. Service was awesome. Even the toilet paper seemed high quality! The free-with-voucher breakfast nearby was yummy. We ate at the Mexican restaurant the clerk recommended across the street and that was super yummy too. This is a review of room 304. We were so disappoinrted!!! The furniture looked like it was bought at a trailer park garage sale. The king sized bed had a queen sized frame so when you sat on the end of the bed the top flipped up. The floor was so dirty that we wiped our feet to get into bed at night. Before moving to Los Osos from West Hollywood, we needed to check out the place we were thinking of leasing. We had never been to Los Osos, but loved the Central Coast in general. We ended up staying our first night at The Back Bay Inn and we were hooked on the place instantly. The front desk was super friendly and informative and our room rocked. We had a lot of fun at the complimentary wine reception and made up our minds before we went to bed that we loved Los Osos. I am so glad we stayed at Back Bay Inn and they helped make the decision so easy! I always recommend this place to my friends and family who come to visit if they are not staying with us.
