Back Door Donuts is an island staple. However, the new system makes the experience less appealing. Having the single register in the kitchen is more inefficient than having a setup outside. The line took much longer than it should have, I waited 15 minutes before I was told they didn't have the donut I ordered and that over half the menu was unavailable. I have NEVER had a donut this good before. At 10pm the line was going down the block, but it was well worth the wait. By far, THE BEST Boston Creme Donut I've ever had, no exaggeration. Came here on a whim cause I wanted a late night donut, turned out to have an adventure. There are more varieties /flavors than I ever seen at Krispy Kreme or dunkin donuts. I got the apple friter and chocolate roll, and they were outstanding. They're also served hot, which for us Krispy Kreme fans here know that's a big deal. Quite possibly the ONLY thing that I ate during my week on the Vineyard that was not grotesquely overpriced. How can you say no to a warm from the oven chocolate glazed cake donut handed to you out the back door of a bakery? $1? Really? Is that all?! Ok, so this place gets great reviews. For us, not so much. Ordered a cake for my Mom's 75th birthday. Go to pick it up 2 hour before the party starts - it's the wrong cake. The frosting looked like it had been done by a 5-year old. The server says " I'll give you a discount for the cake, will that help?" No, it will not. Maybe this place is as good as everyone says. I am from the San Francisco bay area and a regular of the diverse donuts shops heavily sprinkled throughout the area. We have your trendy places, we have your American-Cambodian shops with a dozen donuts under 10 bucks, and even one shop with a 90 yr old going on his 75th year of making donuts. All I fully appreciate. So when I saw the line outside the Back Door I was in awe of anticipation. To avoid the long line I came back at 12:30am to purchase some donuts. I ordered 3 donuts for myself and was thrown back by shininess of these donuts. They looked wet. They felt like they weighed at least a pound each. I pulled the chocolate donut out to take a bite; my fingers were gobed with oil, the donut tasted like it had been marinated in a low temperature deep fryer over night. The first and only bite of this greasy, soaked, dirty sponge was enough. I felt completely duped by the hype. The cinnamon or coconut donut did not fair any better. Also, I am assuming they use Hershey's chocolate since there was a plastic syrup bottle on the front table. That alone should have been my warning in regard to quality. read more

They could use a better line and order system, and over all customers service could be improved. I wasn't told that I had to get into a specific Apple Fritter line until I was ordering in the "regular" doughnut line, and was informed I had to go back and wait in line again. Also, you can't order regular doughnuts in the Apple Fritter line, which means your regular doughnuts get cold because you have to then wait in the AF line. That part of the experience was disappointing and annoying.The Apple Fritter though was not, and was worth the wait. The other doughnuts (tried Coconut and Cinnamon Sugar) were good, but you can def can have that we experience at another donut shop (minus the warmth). read more

Slowly I became a fan of Back Door Donuts and my morning routine on vacation to MV now includes a stop into Back Door Donuts after coffee at Mocha Motts. Admittedly I get the same donut every time, Butter Crunch donut, without really sampling any other items. A couple summers ago my birthday fell close to our vacation and my friends picked up a birthday cake from Back Door Donuts. This has definitely become one of my favorite stops on vacation. read more

Cake donuts are my favorite and all they had that night were glazed. I got the apple fritter instead which was as big as my head and so warm and delicious with chunks of apple. Yum!! That fritter was the best ive had. Probably would have given 5 stars if they had other non-glazed donuts. read more

Delicious! Wow. What a treat. Sure it's definitely a marketing gimmick. But what a GREAT gimmick! Whoever thought of opening up the back door of the old bakery next to the post office is a genius.
