My family has been coming to the island for the past fifteen years and I can absolutely say that under this new ownership, things are different. Walking up to the huge line outside of the back door of a bakery, many may not understand the hype or why people would wait 30+ minutes in the dark for a donut. But those people have not experienced the back door donuts. Sure the line is long, but the donuts are fresh, hot, and tasty! So here is an update to my review from years ago. As I stand in line now, after the business being sold, I am skeptical. I have been buying these donuts out of the back door for decades. Now we are in a rope maze, they started selling late, and maybe three people have been served after 20 min of being open. Maybe they are working out the kinks? literally the best apple fritter, donuts, muffin I have ever had. Went at about 12:30 in the afternoon and was able to get a few things without a wait. Went back the next day and waited in line for more, the line took about 10 minutes but we had to wait 10 more minutes for our apple fritter. Worth it. YUMMY! read more

bring cash! & pay attention to the 2 lines. the first time we tried to go the line was insanely long so we came back another night, luckily the line wasn't too bad so we stuck it out since it was our second to last night there. donuts - fab! we got the chocolate sprinkles. melt in your mouth & hot off the oven/fryer but the star of the night was the apple fritter bigger than my head, literally. its worth the wait! isn't what it used to be. what felt fun and cool before is now a super controlled line to a table (not a back door?) that everyone knows about. that combined with the new early hours and an incredibly frustrating experience has pretty much trashed my opinion of this place. so i stand in this long line, finally get there (after looking for and seeing NO "cash only" signs), and they tell me you have to go in the front for card. so i go in the front and the girl treats me like an idiot (really, she was incredibly rude) for thinking i can buy donuts there, tells me i have to go to an ATM. so i go to an ATM and then go back to the even longer line. the guy controlling the line asks why i'm back, i tell him there was no sign that said they didn't take cards so i had to go all the way to the ATM. he says "oh my bad i was supposed to say that", announces to the line "CASH ONLY", and walks away with no offer to help me get to the front. so basically "yeah, i messed up, have fun in line". you'd think with all the changes they'd either get a card swiper or invest in a freaking sign. rest in peace back door donuts. read more

For a sweet tooth craving you can't go wrong with a quick pit stop at back door! A local favorite, this place serves up a nice selection of donuts and pastries. Must try the apple fritter but beware of food envy from friends. Lucky for you, it's more than big enough to share. The front bakery is great too. I am an Islander who wishes tourists didn't know about this place. But since the word is out, some advice: 1. Get the apple fritter and at least one honey dipped (plain glazed). For yourself. I mean it, don't plan on sharing. You can always finish it in the morning for breakfast. These are both made constantly and are most likely to be served hot and gooey. The apple fritter is HUGE and justifies the higher price compared to the other donuts. Eating a fresh one is a religious experience. 2. Get your cash ready so you can pay and enjoy your donuts and the next person can order. The line moves pretty slow when no0b tourists don't know what they're doing. 3. NO CUTTING/Being a jerk! It's worth the wait. There's a reason a bakery found a need to hire a security guard. Don't ruin this magical life-changing donut experience for everyone else. 4. Place holding can be okay but be polite about it and don't place-hold for too many people. 1-2 people who were parking the car? Ok. Your 10+ drunk, obnoxious friends? Ugh. 5. Tip the bakery workers. They do a great job with friendly service even after hours on their feet. 6. You can't idle your car and double-park the whole parking lot while you wait in line. If there are no (legal) parking spots available, continue out the one way drive-way and find a street spot somewhere else. read more

The quality of the pastries was somewhere between something you might pick up at a gas station loosely wrapped in plastic and a previously opened pack of Entenmanns: Chewy stale crust, obscenely sweet filling, aftertaste reminiscent of refrigerator fluid (freon?). The donuts were decent - around the quality of a standard chain, maybe even a Krispy Kreme. Coffee was dilute and limp. Were these products actually made onsite as claimed, or just smuggled from the stop and shop? In any case, this "coffeeshop" and "bakery" is a total farce. read more

Wonderful small and quaint bakery. I ordered a chocolate croissant , a spinach and egg croissant for my mom, 2 doggy donut cookies and a gluten free brownie. Just want to say the brownie is to die for. The employees are very nice and helpful. I think they should start making the Boston cream donut with white cream also and not just the yellow custard :).
