I saw Colette after experiencing some debilitating back spasms. My husband and I had called the top rated physio therapy establishments near our home and picked her based on her clear responses to our questions and her immediate availability. At my first appointment, I was in a lot of pain and did not really see myself out of it. She asked me to give her 10 days and promised that I would feel better. And I did. Her massages were amazing and would help me loosen up right away. More importantly, she pointed out some issues in my posture and exercises to correct them. I am an ice skater and during a class I sprained my ankle. I was told it would take 3 days but by 2 weeks it was not better, and I had a big dance performance coming up. Back in action is the greatest! I've been doing physical therapy for my neck and back for many years and this is the first time I haven't felt awkward and annoyed every time I have to go. The office is small and cozy and you don't have to deal with a front desk or "exercise specialists". You just deal with the physical therapist directly and get personal attention. I had a crazy bad herniated disc last year and after surgery I ended up in the ER because the pain was excruciating. After doing PT for a few weeks I could already see a significant difference. Colette was a game changer. I was dealing with unimproving back pain for over two weeks following an accident. I called Colette's office and she was able to get me in pretty quickly. She was very thorough during the evaluation and helped me understand what was happening.The first visit was a little uncomfortable, but it definately jump started the healing process. I recently visited Back In Action PT because of some intense neck pain and stiffness I had been experiencing for over 6 months. Various other practitioners and modalities had failed to help. Colette outlined some changes in my daily activities and gave me some simple exercises to do. She also explained that most of the rotation of the neck comes from the top two vertebrae while most of the flexion and extension come from the middle and lower cervical vertebrae. Armed with this new information I could see that I was not actually doing stretches that targeted the areas of my stiffness and discomfort. So I modified my stretching regimen and Colette performed some manipulations to loosen things up in my neck and within a week or two I was already much improved. Colette saved me from having to get knee/meniscus surgery. For years I have played squash and practiced yoga but always felt achy. My knee just changed one day and I discovered I couldn't bend my leg and had a fluid-filled cyst outside my knee and lots of pain. She showed me that I literally had no vastus medialis (VMO) muscle. I spent the next six months working to build that muscle along with my glute muscles. I followed Colette's exercise regime. After many months I got back on the squash court, hit by myself for three weeks, and then started playing games again...then matches again. I am now playing three times a week without pain whereas for years I could only play twice a week due to tight quads and IT band. Colette Seymann, principal of "Back in Action" Physical Therapy is truly exceptional. I am a seasoned neuroscientist who, as an avid past-athlete and cyclist (including mountain biking) has suffered numerous orthopedic injuries, often requiring surgery and post-op PT. Over the past decades, I consequently have been exposed to many different PT facilities and therapeutic approaches, as far away as NY and Boston and as close as Orange county and San Diego. While all PT facilities are generally able to do "some good", they are clearly not all equal. This one ranks at the top! Most recently, I fractured a finger in my dominant hand, while suffering serious injury to the other fingers, hand muscles and wrist. Several,weeks of PT (at another San Diego facility) provided some- but clearly incomplete- return of function. The surgeon could do not more for me and the PT I received was incomplete and therefore disappointing. I got another script for additional PT sessions, searched the internet and was lucky to find and choose 'Back in Action'. Ms. Seymann was able to diagnose problems others missed and implement a treatment program that was efficient and effective. Don't let her diminutive size fool you - Colette is a powerhouse with magic hands! I first began seeing Colette for a combination of lower back sciatic pain and a herniated disk in my neck - I was a mess! She focused on the most acute pain first - my back - and got that resolved within weeks by first directly addressing the spots that were causing the pain and then by helping me retrain my body to stop doing the things that were really causing the problem. She then moved on to my neck, which took a bit longer, but with her focused joint stretching, postural changes and simple exercises, I managed to recover completely and avoid surgery. Colette was also key in my recovery from a bilateral mastectomy with lat flap (where the latissimus dorsi muscles are completely removed and shifted to the front for reconstruction). Needless to say, my entire upper torso was completely tight and weak after the surgeries. Colette not only spent many hours massaging the scarred and tight spots, but also gave me the confidence to move again - her reassurance that I was OK and ready to push myself made all the difference. Now, only 6 months after my final surgery, I have full range of motion and am fully back to Pilates and yoga again! The best thing about Colette's approach is her ability to effectively treat patients with very little pain! No burning, stinging fascia massages or crazy deep painful treatments unless absolutely needed - she has a intimate understanding of the body and what it really needs. I was shocked at first because all other PTs I had previously seen followed the same pattern - painful massage/stretch, then exercises, then ice/heat. Rinse and repeat. Pain would then temporarily go away only to return later... With Colette, it was always a good experience - you can feel the progress at each visit and her focus on simple ways to correct whatever is causing the problem really makes a difference in the long run. Lastly, Colette is a awesome person! She is very friendly and welcoming, which made each visit a treat! I obviously cannot recommend her enough - please go see her if you have any pain!! The best physical therapy I have ever had. The therapist did multiple tests and got to the core of my problem. This involved being referred to an MD specialist, and several return visits to Back in Action for therapy. The therapist gave me her full attention, and stayed with me while I did the indicated stretches and exercises. After several weeks I was completely cured of my balance problem and related pain.
