I'm new to Phoenix Arizona, purchased a vehicle and encountered a few issues with the vehicle. Being new to Phoenix I'm not familiar with any mechanics or auto shops. Searching google I came across " Back to basic automotive " , I called them and they told me to go ahead and come right in , when I got there they were extremely busy and still managed to get my vehicle back for service . A gentleman by the name of Zach took the time out to look at my vehicle and immediately service it , I brought my own parts and was missing one and he ordered it before fixing the problem , so that way I didn't have to come back later due to the same issue . Zach fixed my car and got me back on the road in a reasonable amount of time and I will say I found my personal mechanic and will be back if my car ever needs more work . Been dealing with terrible gear-shifting issues for the last month. The "experts" at Allstate took one look and said I need a whole new transmission; a $2500 job. Took my car to Back to Basics for a second opinion at a friend's recommendation. Glad I did. They took their time to figure out the real problem. A day later my car was running better than ever with a new speed sensor and I was out of there for about $250, including diagnosis. Friendly staff who cares about quality. I would definitely go back to them, but something makes me think my car will be running smooth enough that I won't have to for a while. read more

Back to Basic did great work for me. My last mechanic missed a bunch of stuff on my truck and routinely kept it in his shop for a week or two. These guys found all the problems in a couple of hours and fixed them for a fraction of what my last mechanic had quoted me on both time and cost. Plus, they had my truck back to me within 48 hours of dropping it off -- and it probably would have been done sooner, too, if they didn't have to order a part. This shop was recommended to me by my roommate when my car broke down. I had my car towed there and they did an inspection...the staff is very friendly, straight-forward, and reasonable. The pricing is reasonable as well. They are a small business but well run, with many satisfied customers. The only reason I didn't rate them 5 stars is because my car is back in their shop for fuel pump problems on my 04 Chevy Malibu. When I originally had my car brought there, it started just fine for them, and they found no issues, despite the fact that I had just tried to start my car before I brought it over. They said they could find nothing wrong, and charged me a small fee for inspection. Well, I got about 2 miles before the same problem happened again. Gary (one of the owners/managers) drove over to me, checked out the car, and ordered a tow for me on the spot, and didn't charge me for the tow at all. The tow got there within 15 minutes! Find out later that my fuel pump is dead, and needs to be replaced. I spoke with Dave who has been very helpful, and has done everything he can to reduce the cost of the repair. So far everything has gone well, and I'll let you know how the car turns out! read more

These guys are great!! I took my car to Back to Basic for a clutch problem, and it turns out that it had to be replaced. I had to consider for a day whether it was worth paying for the replacement or just investing those funds into a new car. Dave totally understood and there was no pressure from their side to start working on it or have the car towed away. I decided to go ahead with the repairs, and they were done within two business days. They also came within $7.00 of what they quoted me. They fixed what needed to be done and they have a 12 month/12,000 mile repair warranty on the work. The mechanics are not the common "bolt a new part on and boot you out the door" type people. If you are thinking of doing business with these folks: 1. Talk only to the owner/manager. 2. Recognize that if you make an appointment, it is not for service, it is for check in. You should plan to leave your car for at least half a day. Why? 1. If anything goes not quite right, they might not make it right, the man in charge might just say "you didn't talk to me". That's what I got. 2. I made an appointment for an alignment check. When I got there they told me it would take at least half a day and that there were 16 cars ahead of me. I got there ten minutes before they opened, I'm not sure why they are setting appointments with 16 cars waiting. I made the appointment on Monday morning for Thursday morning. I am not sure how they could not get through the 16 cars in three days, but would have been able to finish them all and mine in half a day. I am not sure why they couldn't tell me I had to drop off the car. I specifically set up the appointment for a time I could come in....and they knew this since I agreed to take time off work to come in when I could get an appointment (they had nothing in the evening for several more days). It would have been nice for them to tell me that I would have to leave the car or wait half a day. It would have been even nicer for them to work on my car at the appointment time. Evidently we have very different ideas of what an appointment is. Every other place I have been to has been able to do this work in about an hour, these guys said it takes at least two. read more

I have two prius"s. Took one in for a tune up and was very pleased. They were very \accommodating. Very pleased we had taken our car there for service. Shortly thereafter, the a/c on the other prius went out. They had to go to Camelback Toyota for parts and when the parts didn't solve the problem, Toyota had to have the car returned them so they could inspect it even though it was a new part and under warrenty. Why they couldn't just take a qualified mechanics word for it us a question that T. on Camelback can answer. At any rate, the part didn't work. Toyota said it was . BAck to Basics said it wasn't and I as the driver said it wasn't. Back to Basics wouldn't take the car back until it worked. Finally, someone at Toyota recognized what had gone wrong and fixed it. Back to Basics stood by me and until they fixed it properly. That's the kind of people I want standing by me. Toyota was going to fix something that wasn't broken and call it quits. After another local mechanic simply couldn't "work me into their schedule", I decided to take my Mercedes into Back to Basic for some much needed attention. As expected, both motor mounts and the transmission mounts had failed. Dropped the car off at about 9am, got a call back around 1pm to let me know of my options: either using factory parts or aftermarket parts and the pros/cons of both. I went with the aftermarket parts which saved a bundle AND accelerated the repair timeframe to allow same day completion. Car was completed faster than expected and it drives like a new car. Amazing service, amazing mechanics and amazing people. From henceforth, I will only come to Back to Basic for my automobile needs. read more

What can I say? These guys are awesome. They are friendly, do exceptional work, and don't charge an arm and a leg. And by don't charge an arm and a leg, I mean they sometimes do additional work and don't charge for it. For example, I went in for an oil change and they noticed a rear light was out. They changed the bulb with no charge. I've used them for both of my vehicles, one of which is old, and both have high miles. I'm always able to get my car in. The older car had been sitting for awhile and had to be towed, but everything had to be arranged from out of town, and they worked with us throughout the situation. When my check engine light came on, they looked at it without charging for the diagnostics. It's nice to find a trustworthy mechanic with excellent customer service. This is why I shop and get services from local vendors. Highly recommend. I'm a customer for as long as I stay in AZ. read more

I had a coolant/water leak under my Jeep and asked a co-worker about a downtown repair shop, as I'd been screwed over by Firestone already. She told me about a good experience she had with Back to Basic so I gave them a try on my lunch break. They fixed the loose hose, filled me back up with coolant and didn't even charge me! If they'd told me I needed a new whatever I'd have been none the wiser. The three gentlemen that assisted were courteous, quick and knowledgable and one was particularly easy on the eyes (a bonus). So this bodyshop has Grade A service, staff, and integrity!!! They do a great job and are conscience that people are weary of getting their cars fixed and are afraid of the cost. Most of us go to the mechanic WAY too late, our bads. Everyone is so friendly and are honest. They will not take you for a ride. I had to leave my car there and was called with my price quote, whether I agreed or not and wanted them to proceed. I did, it had to be done and I am not a mechanic. But I felt comfortable with their price and their attitude. I would recommend this place for the simple things to the most complex. They will tell you that, "Hey, this part costs this much, you need it to get X fixed, what do you wanna do?" It's all up to you but they will do their very best to work with you and your schedule. I actually had to pick up my car early to use to get to/from work and I brought it back 4 days later and they continued on to get my car to pass emissions. I wouldn't trust anyone else. My car broke down at 4:58pm. I called them and they said they would stay there until I got there to take it in. I didn't arrive until 5:30pm and they waited with me until I could get a ride so they ended up staying at work an hour late. That's service! This was the first time I had used Yelp to find an auto mechanic, and I was very happy that I did. My air conditioner in my car was malfunctioning, and would push out cold air in the morning, but in the afternoon's would only push out warm air. This happened in Phoenix during this past summer, and living in Phoenix without air conditioning in my car, is like driving through hell. I was scratching my head trying to figure out why my air conditioner was possessed. When I took it in to this mechanic everything was functioning properly in the morning, but he offered to keep the car until the afternoon to see what the problem was. The mechanic found exactly what the problem was, and better yet, they offered me multiple options of how to fix it... which was refreshing. I don't know much about cars, so I was very cautious and asked for recommendations from the car buffs I know, and they were right, this place is great. Found this place by doing a Yelp search near my work. Saw that they had really positive reviews and set up an appt during lunchtime the following day. Pep Boys told me I had to replace the front struts and rear shocks or else I would have to replace all four tires within 1K miles. They told me the tires were wearing incorrectly. Imagine my surprise when I talked to the Back to Basic Automotive guy after looking at my car (for free) and he said there was no problem - get it balanced - and that the tires looked brand new (have 30K + miles on them). No shocks, no struts, no upsell, no charge. Fantastic! Highly recommend since it is impossible to find a reliable mechanic. read more

Customer Service is great up front and you feel like you have a new friend and someone you trust to work on your vehicle. This place is INCREDIBLY honest and trustworthy; can't say how pleased I was to discover that! I had my A/C done 8 months ago, and now the freon is completely gone - middle of 117-degree August, no A/C at all. I took it back to them this morning and asked them to please look at it - the cold had finally just dissipated. They called me late this afternoon and told me that even though it seemed just fine when they recharged the system in the morning when I brought it in, by late afternoon they had detected a very tiny leak, barely discernible. (that was probably the reason that it took a full 8 months to finally disappear). They told me their previous work was still under warranty and they would take care of the sealing the leak they found, and recharge the system at no cost to me. It would have been so easy to have made up anything, and charge me for it - how would I have ever known? Nope! They were honest and willing to fix it at no cost to me! I will now swear by them, confidently recommend them to all my friends, and never go anywhere else :-) I've had other work done here before, and was pleased - but now I am also amazed and impressed! read more

Have used these guys for years, they are by far the best, most honest mechanics you will find. They have even done extra repairs without charge such as repair a fan motor on my air conditioning or replace a serpentine belt for only the cost of the belt since they had it off already doing another repair. They also showed me the belt they replaced and it did need replaced. I have also found their prices to be very competitive. My wife rents business space from a mechanic shop that owns the whole block. Their prices even for us as renters are higher than Back to Basic rates. I have a '98 camper van that I took to Dunbar Spring to beef-up the rear end. They recommended Back To Basic for the front suspension. Basically rebuilt everything.
