My favorite Lexington style BBQ. The smoked chicken is really good too. Staff is always great.

Asked for a recommendation for a good BBQ place as someone from not local and was told this was a really good spot to try. We came in and were told to choose our seat where we wanted. Water service came immediately and they were patient as we looked over the menu to decide and with our questions about the menu. Our server was very friendly and also gave great menu recommendations. We were a party of 5 and everyone was pretty much satisfied with their choice and meal. The food did take some time to come out with the place not being full. I ordered the brisket sandwich only with a side of baked beans and hush puppies. The baked beans and hush puppies were amazing! The brisket left something to be desired. I was hoping for more favor and char and the bread was also soggy when it came out. It wasn't bad but would probably not order it again. My sister had the sirloin which had a great flavor! The place filled up around 6. Almost all tables were occupied as opposed to when we arrived the whole back room was empty. Over a good first time BBQ experience. read more

This was recommended by a local as being some of the best barbecue, therefore we had to stop. Walking into the restaurant, it had a nice casual vibe. We were able to pick any seat we wanted however what seem like a few minutes later the restaurant filled up quickly. Our waitress was excellent answering all the questions we had and making some good recommendations. I ordered the flounder which was good and filling. Definitely not as it used to be, Ordered a steak there one time and I could have had better success at chewing my shoe and swallowing it, their idea of a good steak is Sirloin, the toughest steak known to man, very few people have been successful at getting a sirloin tender, myself included, but only because I beat it with a tenderizer like it owed me money, lol My idea of a tender steak is either filet mignon or ribeye or porterhouse, even NY strip is a bit tough to consider a tender piece of meat. The place was packed when we arrived. Didn't take too long to be seated, though. The waitress was friendly and helpful in answering our questions. We had planned to go to Lexington Barbque. However, they weren't open. I guess we should have checked before driving 30 minutes. We were doing some siteseeing, so no biggie. It took 15 to 20 minutes to get our food, we thought that was a little long for a BBQ place, but again they were busy, and a chicken sandwich is not the same as BBQ, assuming that's why. We went for lunch at a normally slow time of day. I think the staff was recovering from the lunch rush because they were a little slow but still very polite. We had burgers, brisket, and chicken sandwich. Heard no complaints on burgers. Chicken filet was real chicken. Brisket was tender, but a little dry for my taste. Monthly we travel between Mooresville and Asheboro NC, decided to try Lexington BQ restaurants for lunch when on road. Today, 'Backcountry BQ' just of I-85. The pork Q was excellent 5/5 some of best every had, wife tried BQ chicken and loved it. Very good fries, slaw & hushpuppies were nice side. Highly recommend- waitress was friendly, service fast, plenty menu choices, large portions (had to box home leftovers tomorrow's lunch!) and were prices fair. Whenever I'm south and I'm heading back to Virginia, I always stop at Backcountry Barbeque! I get their bbq sandwich combo with slaw, fries, and hush puppies. I also get a side of banana pudding to go with it. Their baked beans are also so good! Don't forget cheerwine for your drink. read more

BBQ run on March 15, 2020. We love to go to Lexington for NC Q. Backcountry BBQ is an out of way restaurant south of Lexington. It is a an old Southern style restaurant serving BBQ. The Q is wood fired, my favorite! We had BBQ plates along with sandwiches & sides. The Q had a nice Smokey flavor, but lacked an overall good Q vinegar base with a bit of black & red peppers is the N.C. style. The Q was course chopped & tender. The negative was the amount of liquid grease on the plate. I like a moist Q, but not a greasy plate of meat! The sides were simple...good crinkle cut fries, red slaw & bake me beans. All were good. It was a good, but not great meal. Give this place a try!!! read more

The sauce at back country is probably the best of Lexington style Q. The meat could probably be trimmed a little closer and reduce the fat in it, or cook it a little longer to render the meat a little longer. Still a 5 star review! Meal was great overall and the service was outstanding! read more

Open on Sunday! Many Lexington barbecue places advertise they are but Backcountry actually is open Sundays offering great chopped pork Q, excellent service and sweet tea worth the trip. Their sauce (dip) is good enough to drink and goes with everything except maybe the banana pudding. We will be back to make sure it's this good consistently. I've a feeling it is. read more

I went to Backcountry BBQ Sunday evening never been there before and they have everything I chose a White lean fine chopped bbq sandwich with no slaw the only bbq I eat is Lexington bbq and it was fantastic also got hush puppies and tea and some dip it was delicious the service was outstanding and we had a party of 6 everyone was very satisfied with the service and the food I especially loved the dip it was a tad thicker than the other I normally eat will highly recommended and I will go back Thanks for the great service and fantastic food I'd give you 5 star read more

Here's the thing with Backcountry--don't go into it thinking it's like your local bbq joint. Because it isn't. I will admit I was not a fan at first. But you can't compare it with typical bbq--it's something different. They don't call it sauce here--it's called "dip". This is Carolina bbq in its purest form. Strictly chopped pork with vinegar dip. I understand that not everyone expects this, and it is certainly an acquired taste. Leave your bbq biases at the door and look forward to a new experience. Also, the baked beans are the best you will find anywhere. I think they add Worcestershire sauce to the recipe which gives these beans a unique flavor that I'm yet to see anywhere else. Finally, I remember the prices being dirt cheap--without big city overhead to pay, they pass the savings on to you. I hope to be along I-85 in the future. read more

The best BBQ ever! I've never gotten anything from there that wasn't amazing! Friendly service

While relatively new by Lexington area standards (operating since 1984) this place continues to produce outstanding pork barbecue - cooked over wood, it is tender moist, and with some nice smokiness. It is well sauced out of the kitchen, and the slaw is one of my favorites of this type (the Red BBQ Slaw, their White is just ok). The Pork Skin Sandwich here is simply the best. The skins are large, full of crunch, and don't go all soggy in the slaw, which really adds to this sandwich. The Chili Dog here is not bad, just a little on the sweet side for my taste. The Hushpuppies are nice, little crunchy balls of great flavor - they are just like the ones served at Cook's, on the other side of the county. The BBQ Chicken (first time I've tried it here) was a major disappointment - it was very tender, but there was a distinct bitter taste, especially to the sauce and the skin - much as if the sauce had be allowed to burn slightly. May have just been a bad batch - stuff happens. We'll give it try another time, and there will be another time. read more

Best Q in Lexington hands down. Ive tried just about all of them. The Q and the dip is perfection. Hush puppies are great too.

They have updated this business a little bit. I like the nice signings about barbecue all over the place. Still, I don't rank it high because of prices escalating, and quantity does not match the price. I just don't get the same satisfaction out of this place is I do other establishments in the area. I believe it does have the three C's, which are customer service, cleanliness, and somewhat cost effectiveness. I believe it loses stars because it doesn't really pack your plates like most places. Also, I know it does use wood, but for some reason, I never do taste it in the barbecue here. I do know it is one of the few barbecue restaurants that offer steak in the evening. I do see they have a flame grill in the back, so it should make the hamburgers and steaks really nice here. However, I have really never gotten a great plate here, maybe one day. It's not a bad place. I just hope one day they will serve me the food that everybody else seems to be getting here at this location. I think it's very popular and a nice stop. I will definitely give them four to five stars if the food ever comes out that way when I eat here. I just can't do it yet. Sorry, I'm so sorry the neighbors are going to kill me.
