Called in an order. ASKED do you have fish. Oh yeah. Asked is it good ..absolutely. got there. Oh we don't have fish...it's frozen trying to thaw now. Ordered 3 hot dogs...had to park and wait with no discount. They are unprofessional. Wait time was stupid....and no customer recovery. We'll go to johnnys..which sucks too but at least they know what's going on. That place is little, dirty and I hate my husband for continuing going there. Finally, he sees my point. Well, they serve BBQ, and a Chili Dog, and I was going by, so you know I'm going to stop in. Some visits are diamonds, some visits are coal - this one went pretty deep down the mine shaft with no canaries singing. This is a small, very plain, scrunched up place - everything seemed miniaturized, from the tiny booths to the displays of toy NASCAR cars on the walls. The bathroom facilities are outside, at the back of the building. The BBQ Sandwich nicely sized, more pulled than chopped, and while it was tender, it had very little taste, and was dry. The pork is not sauced out of the kitchen, accounting for most of the dryness, but even adding some of the small cup of sauce didn't help much - there was no freshness or sharpness to the taste. Very, very ordinary BBQ. The Chili Dog looked good - chili was meaty, with nice color, but the taste was mostly sweet, no spice to it. I'll pass on by next time, once was enough. read more

The last I went was the last time I spent the day with my Aunt Linda, she passed away due to cancer just a few months later. But what we had was sooo good. We shared our hotdogs, cheeseburgers and French fries together. It made it that much more special for me I've been eating from there for over 30 years, great food and very cozy! read more

I want to love it because it is a little local hole in the wall place that has been here my whole life but I have just never been able to love it. My Daddy, that's another story he loves it, he'd eat there every day if he could. I usually get a foot long hot dog which is my favorite food and theirs is just okay, not my favorite place to get one from, good only in a pinch. They do have good tea and tater tots. I've had their bbq sandwiches and while good, they are not at the level of College BBQ across town, that's a whole other ballgame there. I did try a cheeseburger and it was just ground chuck and kinda tasted like an actual chuck, it was dry, bland, either none or little seasoning and not something I would ever eat again. This is what happens when I try to venture out of my hotdog mind set and try something different, I don't usually like it. They do have wonderful sounding specials when they are open and it does still draw a big crowd so be prepared for that if you go at peak times. It is a small place with the old kind of booths that are hard to get into if you weigh more than 150 pounds, they are the kind you kind slide the table or seats and its hard to be comfortable in them. Parking out front is easy to get into, hard to get out of as you have to back out of every spot back into the road, if the drive thru window is backed up, you aint going anywhere. I would suggest parking around back and walking or park on the front row next to the street and just drive over the sidewalk back on to the road. Darrells has been my go to for awhile BUT lately I have been extremely disappointed. They have messed up my order every time and it takes about 30 minutes just to get ahold of them. Corn nuggets are good but banana pudding taste like water, no flavor whatsoever. I ordered a salad ($7.00) & there was only 3 pickles on it & not many tomatoes. If you want good food, go to College BBQ! If I could give less than one star, I would. Hush puppies are also always burnt! What an unexpected surprise! The portions are HUGE! My shrimp and flounder was really good. The okra, squash and hush puppies rounded out a really good meal. My sister got the onion rings and they were lightly breaded and crisp. This place is a hidden gem. read more

The food is good. The barbecue was average, more flavorful than many places, but cold when I got it. Same low end frozen crinkle cut fries as is typical of NC barbecue places, but the hushpuppies are in abstract forms, almost like a funnel cake, and are fluffy and delicious. The big downside? They don't take cards (this is 2015), the space is cramped, and their hours are severely limited, so they are literally handing business to other places! read more

I have gotten in the habit of eating breakfast at Darrell's on Saturday. Believe me when I say that it is a delicious start to an overloaded day. Saturday is normally my day for getting the errands done, grocery shopping, picking up gifts, etc. Their breakfast is inexpensively priced and more than enough to satisfy anyone's appetite. My sister and her kids joined me today and everyone had plenty to eat and definitely enjoyed all of their food. I would definitely recommend this place for breakfast and lunch as well. My family eats here at least once a week. We love the daily specials and fresh vegetables. You can get a variety of things from BBQ to half a BBQ chicken. Don't forget the best fish in town! Great place to go for breakfast, lunch, or supper. BBQ is really good, but we often get the pork chops or fish. Not big or fancy -- but this is small town USA, not Charlotte. Even though I'm not a fan, the abundance of NASCAR decor is interesting. (Anybody who describes any poster with Dale & Jr as "outdated" sure must not be from around here! Those would be fightin' words for some! :-) ) The bathroom is down a small hallway, & is accessible from either inside or outside.
