I spent the day in Salisbury with my family yesterday morning and we passed by this little restaurant and decided to give it a try. I just loved all of the vintage decor that they had inside. To my surprise they offered a breakfast menu ALL DAY which was shocking considering this was a BBQ restaurant lol. I ordered a pancake with a side of bacon. It was so good and our waitress was so sweet and checked on us consistently to make sure our drinks were full at all times. I'd highly recommend this place if you're ever in Salisbury! read more

This is one of the best burgers I've ever had. The pimento cheese made it a little messy but I did not care at all. It was fantastic. The footlong dog was solid too, no complaints at all. The fries were fresh, crispy, and seasoned well. This place is a Salisbury STAPLE and if you haven't had it, you're missing out. On the original plate, the fries spilled over the sides, the hush puppies were excellent, too many, but filling, the red slaw was red slaw, baked beans were tremendous to someone living alone, and the BBQ was probably at least a full pound, and superb. The sign says "best barbecue in town". I'm not here to agree or deny that since I didn't have the barbecue. Lots of people say it's great and I'm sure it is. I had my mind set on a hamburger steak plate when I came here. But when I got inside, the special of the day was meatloaf and so I tried it. The atmosphere is perfect. It's home style country bbq place with great people and just a feel like all the places I went to when I was a kid. I love it. The meatloaf was good. Wasn't super amazing but it wasn't bad either. The baked beans seemed homemade and were really good. The fried squash seemed to be frozen bought squash. And while it was just ok, I prefer handmade fried squash so it didn't do much for me. You always want hush puppies to be amazing at a bbq place and theirs did not disappoint. Nicely done. The sweet tea was perfect and I had a couple of refills. Thank you for that! Being a native to Salisbury, I grew up on Hendrix. For supper, my husband and I went for BBQ salads. It was as yummy as I remembered, my husband not so much. What I do like about Hendrix is that they offer a lot for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I used to LOVE their breakfast, but since I've gotten older I've enjoyed it less. Hendrix has good food. I had a pulled pork sandwich with coleslaw that was huge, well made, and the bbq saice was really good. We also had fried okra, a flounder sandwich and a philly cheesesteak. This place has been here my whole life under one name or another though it has been Hendrix a really long time. Our town has 3 locations but this one is my favorite and I know the daily specials by heart, they are different at each location. Monday is one of my favorite days to go, that is "Hamburger Steak" day and they have the best one around. The price has gone up a considerable amount since all this virus crap but that is the case everywhere with everything Wednesday is another favorite day because it is "Meatloaf" day. Each full meal or daily special comes with your choice of roll, hushpuppies or bun, do yourself a favor and choose the bushpuppies! If it is any other day I may be there getting a footlong all the way with white slaw cause well, hotdogs are my favorite food but because of fear of turning into a giant hotdog, I do on occasion eat something else. What a cute little place! Menu is fairly simple and has favorites such as burgers, hot dogs, and sandwiches with the usual sides. There are also a few daily specials/entrees like meatloaf, chopped steak, chicken and dumplings with traditional southern-style sides like mashed potatoes, potato salad, baked beans, etc. Each time I come here there are different veggies and entrees available, but for the most part, the menu is static. They also have breakfast available all day. The interior is rather small and quiet and provides a warm, welcoming atmosphere. My server was an elderly woman and was so chatty but in a friendly way I'd expect from a neighbor, which was very nice and made me feel like a welcomed customer. The prices here are great! They seem to not be affected by inflation, and I'm not complaining! Lunch, drinks, and dessert for 2 with tip was under $25, and I had leftovers to take home! They seem to cater more to take-out and have a drive thru also. read more

Food was so-so. We ordered Bbq and it really wasn't seasoned beyond the sauce, which they skimped on. The meat was moist. The hush puppies were good. The white slaw was bland and dry. Once they dropped off our food, they never came by to check. I watched customers get up and track them down for items and even get their own to go box. They checked in with us as we were looking to pay. The staff seemed friendly but the way they have the work station set up, the waitresses had their backs to the customers 95% of the time. read more

A waitress came by and asked how everything was and my husband told her about it and she laughed. Our waitress came by and was told about it, and her response was, couldn't she eat it? With pretty much only pulled pork to choose from off the smoker the options are slim at best. In addition a sause option other the ketchup and ranch would have been nice. I called in an order earlier today for lunch, along with two of my co-workers. We went through the drive-thru to pick up our orders as we were trying to get them to go so that we could take them back to work to eat them. As we pulled in the parking lot, one of the employees working in the parking lot was rude from the get-go. 1. When we told her our names for the three call-in orders, she told us that we could only do one or two orders in the drive-thru. How were we to know that unless someone told us? If this was a common occurrence with customers, why doesn't the staff ask people questions or tell people things on the phone when they have a call-in order? 2. She told us to pull up while she went in by saying, "just pull up." So, we pulled up behind the vehicle in front of us. She followed us and said," well, I meant over there" in a rude tone. We looked at each as if we were to have read her mind when she said "just pull up." 3. When we pulled off to go inside, we were dumbfounded by how rude she was. My co-worker laughed, and she came back to the car and said, "is something funny?" My co-worker said, "yeah, you're being really rude" to which the staff replied with "no, I'm not." One, the staff assumed my co-worker laughed at her. Two, she came back with a sarcastic response. 4. When we pulled around, my co-worker went inside to tell them about it. She spoke to the lady at the register but said employee (who was once outside) was now inside. I suppose she thought she had to "defend herself." I understand that things have been rough with Covid-19. I understand that business (especially small businesses) have been hit hard with a lack of business and such. That not withstanding, being rude to a customer as I have previously mentioned above is not understandable. You can be stressed and busy, but there is no need to speak to a customer in such a way as that staff member spoke to us. There were no signs, she did not communicate with us clearly, and there was no organization in the parking lot. You cannot expect the customer to automatically know what to do in a drive-thru that isn't well laid out or organized. You cannot expect a customer to be able to read an employee's mind. You cannot expect to know that you can only have one or two drive-thru orders. Lastly, after we were spoken to the way we were spoken to, you cannot expect someone to react in a nice way in return. All in all, you can definitely expect me to not return to this place of business because no staff should speak to any customer in such a way. read more

Great place really good breakfast, until my health went down loved to eat inside now my wife goes to the drive through and gets fish and I get hooked on the little corn dog basket, the short puppies with weeny and best French cooked just like I like them. We walked in not knowing what to expect. I've never been to North Carolina but heard this place was good. I asked the young lady who waited on us (her name was Lauren) What she would recommend. I had the special of the day which was hamburger Patty with gravy and onions with Mac and cheese and greens as my sides and my girlfriend had the BBQ plate. Don't go to this restaurant if you're concerned about Covid! When I went to this place only one employee had a mask on, it was luckily my server. It's crowded, no seat spacing. The servers walk around, and greet the customers with their masks pulled down. Even the cashiers don't wear their masks, I saw the employees in the kitchen with no mask on at all! While I was being checked out, there was an employee who had no mask on lean over the bar, and yell out to one of the customers to ask a question, a foot away from my face. Ordered a to go BBQ plate to come home and realize it messed in the bag. I asked for slaw on the side, but it came directly next to the BBQ. This menu is way different than the Spencer location. Stopped here for lunch because our go to barbeque joint, College Barbeque was closed for a mini vacation. We both ordered hot dogs, the wife a regular and I got a footlong along with fries and two drinks. I wanted a few hushpuppies with my footlong, but they only sold them in a basket of 9, so I passed. College will let you get as many or as few as you want. The wife and I said the same thing the hot dogs were not good especially with the cold, soggy buns and that the hot dogs at College are much, much better than here. We were going to take some barbeque home but at Hendrix its $12 a pound and that doesn't include slaw as it does at College, here it's an extra $3.50 for a pint of slaw making a pound of barbeque with slaw $15.50 Vs College at $10.25 for a pound of barbeque with slaw, so again we passed. With just two hot dogs, fries, drinks, tax and tip it was $18 WOW! Not worth it at all. We have had convenience store hot dogs that were better than the ones we had here! Like I said we only ate here because College barbeque was closed and this place is just around the corner and we were hungry and that's the only reason we ate here. Next time we are in Salisbury and College Barbeque is closed, We will definitely try another barbeque joint instead of Hendrix. read more

The fries came out hot and were well seasoned, but the hot dog was colored a disturbing bright red. Seated ourselves and waitress immediately asked what we wanted. We ordered tea but asked for a few seconds to review menu... that waitress never returned. After about 10 minutes we flagged down a waitress and she took our order. We both ordered hamburger steaks, baked potatoes and salads. We paid .75 extra to get baked potatoes... my husbands was the size of a large egg. We asked the waitress if this is what we're paying .75 for and she said that sometimes they are big and sometimes small... thats that. We paid 1.00 to get grilled onions on one of the hamburger steaks... there was 4 or 5 small rings that were barely cooked. The hamburger steaks were awful. The meat was tasteless and had so much fillers, looked like bread crumbs, that it was mushy. We didn't eat them. Might also mention that it seemed we were in grand central station... they have it fixed where the telephone ringing was amplified loudly into the dining room and a loud bell ringing often when a car entered the drive thru. I stand by my previous review and bump this historic establishment up to the full 5-star treatment. Hendrix is a Salisbury, NC staple; there are two other locations, but this one is my favorite and the best, by far. Love their Chicken Biscuit for breakfast, but I'm also a fan of their sausage biscuits as well (try a sausage egg and cheese biscuit...you'll thank me). Their pancakes are also stuff of legend, but be careful in trying more than one...they are massive. You can't go wrong with a barbecue sandwich or tray for lunch or dinner. Seriously delicious Lexington barbecue, very tender and very tasty. Fries are surprisingly good, as well...they compliment the pork quite well. They have some of the best hush puppies around, and I don't like hush puppies...unless they're from Hendrix. Not too much batter and not too big. This Hendrix has been around for a while. It's not much to look at from the outside (or, from the inside for that matter), but the food is great and the service is above average. read more

When I first moved to NC I had my own little "Who's on First?" episode w/the waitress on my inaugral visit to Hendrix. Her: Can I help you? Me: Yes, please. What kind of BBQ comes on the BBQ plate? Her: (Looking like, if I ever order, she's gonna give me a sneezer) It's pork. Bbq is pork. Me: Ooooh. Okay. Out west bbq is an action, a way of cooking, not a specific meat. Gotcha. Nevermind then, I don't eat pork. How's the mesquite salad? (Insert image of waitress w/smoke coming out of ears) I really was NOT trying to be a P.I.T.A and I'm sure she was not trying to be obtuse. Once we agreed to put our (many) differences aside, that waitress and I got along just fine and thus started a loooong relationship. It's been nearly nine years and I still enjoy the mesquite salad; big, very satisfying and very well priced. Flavorful, tender, chopped & smoked chicken breast over greens w/awesome (ie: super fattening) housemade ranch. The mac-n-chs side is very good. The pork, according to everyone in my family and everyone I know who has eaten there, is awesome. My sons, hubby and again, everyone I know who's been there, love the slaw. Stay away from the hush puppies. They are addictive. :) Everyone in Salisbury will tell you Hendrix makes the best Sweet Tea and most of my previous coworkers would get a large (imagine a trough) on their way to work each morning. This is a great place to eat. The atmosphere was nice, except for the TVs. The walls are decorated in retro signage. The server was awesome, and another refilled our soda glasses twice. I used to enjoy eating here in the past, but things have definitely changed. Breakfast used to be excellent, but now the eggs are burned, and the food is generally no good. Tonight I called in an order for the "Big Burger" and asked the person on the phone if it was large enough for two people to split. She said it was, and proceeded to ask what I would like on it, etc. I sent my husband to pick it up, and he came in and asked me if I knew it came with a salad! A SALAD with a burger?? With a large group (9) visiting from out of state and Hendrix was recommended. We were a little hesitant at first, but had a great experience. Waitstaff very attentive and made good recommendations. My husband and I eat here regularly; several times a week for dinner and my husband joins friends for coffee every morning. The food is always excellent and the service is superb. Each waitress is always courteous and helpful and they work as a wonderful team together.
