There was a really nice worker who went above and beyond by taking orders after the deadline (but try to order before the deadline at 10:30), answering questions with ease, being patient, and giving extra sauces in the bag. Although I wasn't there for long, as it was a pick-up order, the place looked interesting with a peaceful vibe that makes you want to stay for a drink, which they serve at their bar. Still yet, our food was prepped fairly fast and portion sizes were good. What a lovely gathering spot for Hillsborians. Hillsborites. Hillsboreenos. The patio upstairs is perfect for people watching. Came in on a random day and it was plenty full. They offer a selection of brews and pub food - burgers burgers burgers. The mushroom burger in particular was so good! The tots are on par with McMen's but here they offer a variety of doing sauces. I especially like the habanero ketchup, so spicy! I also appreciated their friendliness - our server found out we were there celebrating a birthday and they surprised us with a brownie sundae and a candle on top!! read more

They have great beer on tap... from classic Portland IPA to a Golden S'mores Stout. I had the Brew Lab IPA and it was spot on. They have happy hour from Sun-Thurs between 2:30 to 5:30. Hard to argue with discounted beer and drinks! The decor is fun and has an outdoorsy vibe... canoes on the ceiling anyone? Plenty of swag for sale if you want to represent this legit local brewery! Came here once, around the time they first opened up earlier this year, and second was just recently. I gotta say that I really dig this brewery! Their menu items are quite appealing, while the plates are fairly simple. Upon arrival you'll immediately see the bar, as well as consume that classic woodsy feeling like you're at a mountain brewery. Well, sorta lol. Love that feeling, miss that feeling too. I hate to mention their competitors, but the look is quite similar to good ol' Deschutes and Great Notion I'd say. A typical Portland style brewery. Twice I've been here, and twice we had nothing but excellent service. The guy with glasses knew his beers, and made good recommendations that we bought a few cans to take home. While recently, the lady with glasses was cordial and still attentive for serving us on a late night Monday night. My only wish was that I should've remembered their names lol. I think they know who they are. Down to earth folks. For appetizers, we loved the onion rings ($12), nice and crispy! Loved their soft giant pretzel ($14) and their pig lager beer cheese dipping sauce. I gotta give their fried pickles a try and maybe some wings next time. The Turkey Burnt Ends Sandwich ($17) was similar to a pulled pork sandwich, but with turkey. I enjoyed it a lot! And you can't go wrong with ordering crispy seasoned tots. As for alcoholic beverages, they do server wine and other cocktails, but they seem to be known more for ales and lagers. If you ask me, I go with the usual, The Ridge Run Stout mmm mmm! A Party Acres Hazy IPA and a Rip City Remix IPA and great customer service provided by Ally J., with a great personality, great looks, and attention to detail. The IPAs were brewed and served to perfection. Hazy, Hoppy, cold, and delicious! Ordered the Garlic Parmesan Tots, and had no idea we would get a MOUNTAIN of tots smothered in cheese sauce! Got them extra crispy and they arrived to our liking. The atmosphere of the brewery was sporty, casual, and comfortable. We had a very good second visit at Backwoods last night. The experience started off being a one star evening as we couldn't find a server to greet us or to take a beer order. When this finally occurred, after 10 minutes, the rest of the meal was excellent. My wife had the Veggie Burger, our daughter had the Avocado Chicken Sandwich. I had the Chicken Cordon Blue Sandwich and it was tremendous as were the accompanying onion rings. I do think $16.75 PLUS $4.00 for the rings is a bit steep. $20.75 combined?? Our daughter's sandwich also had onion rings...$20.00 total. The beers were great. My wife had the IPA and we had the Pilsner. Again, not inexpensive...$7,75 each. Asked to speak to manager, Matt, and learned he is no longer associated with this location. Menus were old soiled and unattractive. In the past have visited here probably twice a week. It is likely we will never return. Marlon, the cook is superb, the wait staff is very attentive and professional, but the menu is sorely lacking. This was a terrible corporate decision. read more

I'm tempted to give 5 stars to Backwoods, but I'll land on 4. A five for me really has to standout on multiple fronts. That said, backwoods is in my top 2 joints in downtown Hillsboro. I've visited this place at least 5 or 6 times since they opened and have never been disappointed with either the service or the meal. Their burgers are great, their fries and tots are amazing, their pulled pork tot nachos are fantastic, their smoked salmon nachos are lovely, and I'm sure everything else is top notch. I will say I wasn't a huge fan of their wraps. Their wraps seem to have too much lettuce to other filling ratio. Just not for me. It took a little longer than expected to have menus delivered to us, a couple employees walked by us behind the bar but seemed to be waiting for the bartender to take care of us. The drinks were excellent, I had the habanero passion fruit margarita and raspberry lemon drop. Both were flavorful and fresh. For food we ordered the pulled pork nachos and turkey club. The nachos were good with lots of ingredients but a little greasy. It's nice that they offer tots and sweet potato fries options without charging extra, which is very rare. Anyone with food, allergies beware. I ordered my food with no onions. The food took a long time. When it finally arrived, after a few bites, I realized they had put onions on my food. Our waiter, Mark, candidly admitted the cook had put onions on my food. He said, "I told them not to put onions on your food. Do you want me to take it back?" After waiting all that time for my food, I decided to scrape the onions off. They give me indigestion and are irritating to my stomach. When I was paying for the check, I asked Mark if he had spoken to the chef about the onions. He said no. Before I leave, a bad review, I always try to talk to the manager to sort things out. I spoke with Matt Mawhinney . He said, "I wish you would've told me before now" I explained to him that I think talking to him as I was leaving was appropriate. He responded " Well, you've already eaten your burger" I informed him that I had taken pictures of the onions. I informed him that his waiter freely admitted there were onions on the burger. I told him that I told the waiter, and if he needed to know about substandard food experience, he should train his staff to let him know. He then said, and I can't believe this, "Some of these weight staff have never waited on tables before. We just opened. " I told him that I wanted the name of the general manager. I stopped by here on a Friday before going to a show at Bag and Baggage down the street. This location doesn't take reservations like other ones. Now problem, we went up to the deck upstairs. Unfortunately, only one of the heaters was working, so a bit chilly for this time of year. Order from the bar. I think the drink list is limited upstairs, but able to get what we wanted. It took about an hour for our food to come. Front of house seemed to be staffed ok, so I'm guessing the kitchen was understaffed that night. Maybe newness of the place is affecting things, or someone called in sick? I had a burger and tots. Burger was pretty good, but the tots were a bit hard and cool. I also think they were supposed to be seasoned, but weren't. I think that once they get the kinks worked out, this is going to be a pretty awesome place. The rooftop bar and Tuesday market in the summer will be a winner (assuming you can get up there as I'm guessing it will be that popular). Looking forward to coming here again in a while. read more

Occasionally, Hillsboro needs to be tricked into accepting something nice. Superficially, Backwoods' pretense is that it's just a simple ol' bunker of a brewery in Carson that makes malty, unfussy beers for regular folk who just want a moment to themselves in this workaday world. When the Carson location first opened, and a predominantly male clientele in camo would toast to someone among their number just released from a local lockup and headed back to their job culling timber for the Stevensons... yes, that might've been a fitting description. But the only thing Backwoodsy about this brand as it exists today is the name, which is all Hillsboro needed to hear when it took over for comparatively fancy pants Ex Novo in Main Street Commons. While the rugged Washington County folk weren't looking, however, Backwoods' Carson location began pouring for Portland, Seattle and even Californian (gasp) vacationers and retirees. It set up shop in the old Pearl Tavern (sorry, Joey Harrington), made food other than bar pies, made friends in the city and, around the pandemic, started devising plans to give people a little vacation spot in its Carson "party acres" cabins. Now, Backwoods is here in Hillsboro and it's easy to get the wrong impression. The main dining room is lined with fake timber and fireplaces. There are TVs all over the place and even on the upstairs roof deck. The tap list stares you directly in the face and six packs are piled at the main entrance. Back to the lowbrow roots, right? Wrong. Those who've been here since it opened know that the place hasn't been playing to any of those expectations. With one of the largest bars in town and an experienced bar staff, Backwoods has built itself a formidable cocktail list and an extensive array of options in a space where--before it and The High Ground opened their doors--customers had to hope the bartenders at Wilson's or Joe's (now HBG) either knew the drink you were talking about or had the patience to look it up. And, as Top Burmese and Syun Izakaya foretold, Backwoods found the overwhelming number of people who wanted to come downtown for a sit-down dinner that didn't involve pizza or tacos. Yes, there's a fried-foods and burgers pub menu, but there are also multiple salads, multiple wraps and multiple sandwiches and desserts. There are options here that Hillsboro once required a McMenamins or the side of a highway, and they're all positive developments for this corner of town. Years ago, when Two Kilts was considering moving into what is now the Insomnia space on Main Street, I thought Downtown Hillsboro needed a brewery for the beer. With Noble Hop more than adequately covering that front and every bar and restaurant having roughly four taps of its own, Backwoods doesn't need good or even decent beer to thrive here: It needs to be a reliable stop for dinner and drinks that looks simple on its surface, but brings more to the table than its community realizes. read more
