I just hired Backwoods BBQ to cater my wedding of 140 guests. I was so excited to have them cater our wedding for many reasons! They came highly recommended by so many people. And when I first spoke to Steve on the phone I really thought, Man! This guy knows his stuff! I was stoked! I ranted and raved to all my guests about the amazing food we were going to have! 3 meats, spicy tri tip chili and 7 cheese killer macaroni and cheese! I changed from the basic option because beans are not my fav. Especially when you have those other great options! When I called to confirm the date, guest count and menu i was so excited! As soon as Steve received his deposit I felt ghosted! I called, left voicemail, sent multiple text messages regarding the menu and appetizers we'd like to add! He never responded until I had my mom call from a different number. Whatever.. we kept the reservation. Steve told me on the Thursday before my Saturday wedding that he'd be here at 4:30pm for set up. The day finally comes and 5:30 rolls around. Wedding is about to start. And he's still not here!!!! No call, no heads up he's running behind. He gets here, and yea food is ready on time. No problem there. But I cannot believe how unprofessional and downright RUDE he was to my mother in law. (The one who paid for the catering) once he arrived. Who shows up late and then has the audacity to be rude?! He followed her around, barking orders, she was so offended and so stressed by him. I had multiple guests tell me of the arguing going on between him and his staff through the serving period. He was NOT FRIENDLY OR PLEASANT. So the grand entrance finally takes place and my groom and I sit down to eat the meal I had been so excited about for months. What do I find? A plate half full of beans. Two kinds of beans. No mac n cheese. No spicy tri tip chili. Look.. I'm not a picky person.. this was just my only real big request. NO BEANS! I also don't believe we should be paying for food that was not delivered. He clearly did not write anything down when we booked him. I reached out afterwards expressing my frustrations and once again his arrogance was astounding! Zero accountability. Zero attempt at making anything right or apologizing. So now I am here writing the review I hoped I would not have to leave. Food was good.. but the service was TERRIBLE!!!!!!!! Stopped here for an early dinner on a friends' recommendation. The process is that you walk up to a counter, place your order, then find a table and they bring the food to you. Lots of picnic-table style seating, although some of it is cramped and a little too close together. I spent most of my meal dodging little feet into my back from the kids sitting behind me. I mean, there was a foot or less of room between my bench and theirs. Atmosphere is very casual, with lots of sawdust and peanut shells on the floor. Sometimes they have live entertainment. A game room and a banquet room are also on the premises. I ordered a two-meat combination, selecting the tri-tip & chicken, along with the coleslaw and tri-tip chili as my sides. I was hungry! My wife ordered a 1 meat platter and my kid had the kid's meal. I found the food to be good, with the chicken being my favorite. The tri-tip was cooked well and tender with almost no fat. The chicken was tender, juicy and flavorful. The chili was great, with just enough zing to remind you that you're eating chili. While the food was good, the portions were scrawny! The size of each of the meals ordered was almost the same! I expected the two meat platter to have twice as much meat as the 1 meat platter. Not so. As a matter of fact, all 3 platters appeared to have almost the same amount of meat! WTF?? A 2 meat platter contains the same amount of meat as a kid's meal or a 1 meat platter? (Edit - To clarify, my 2 meat platter contained approx 2 very thin slices of tri-tip about the 2/3 size of a playing card and about 4 "strips" of chicken breast meat. Not even a 1/2 breast or steak's worth! Sides were about 1/3 to 1/2 cup of each. Also had 1 roll. For $13.00??) Because of this, I won't be going back. I like this type of casual restaurant. Picnic table seating, concrete floors and free peanuts, throw the shells on the floor. They have an arcade completely separate from the dining area for the kids and pool tables in the back of the dining area for the big kids. Definitely a locals place. You walk in and order at the counter then take a seat and they bring all the food to your table. I think the BBQ here is really good. It's real BBQ that's for sure. They give plenty of it too. We used Backwoods BBQ Catering for a big party at the house. Steve brought out the van and barbecue/smoker trailer for on-site cooking. It impressed a group of friends from Texas as authentic Texas barbecue. Everyone raved about the meal - tri tip, chicken breast, hot links AND the pulled pork. They made a lot more food than we needed even though many went back for third helpings. He gave us all the leftovers packed up. I dealt with Steve by email and phone over the last month to plan the party directly with him and the communication was clear and responses were quick. If you like Philly type sandwiches this place if worth a try next time you are driving down the 91 thru Corona. They have a Philly Chicken and Philly Steak sandwich that is pretty unique. TONS of bbq chicken or beef with onions and cheese sauce plus shredded cheese too! Pretty damn cheesy! These sandwiches are LARGE too. You can get sandwich only or with a choice of two sides for a couple bucks more. The twice baked potato is good. Very casual place with 2 pool tables and video games. Order at the counter and they bring the food out to you. The employees never seem to be too friendly. But the food is good! Ask for sour cream if you like it on your potato or tacos. I ride a motorcycle, but I'm no biker. I like the places where there's a little country & a little rock n roll. I do like the places that have peanut shells on the floor ( TRIVIA POINT---it polishes the floor as they grind..and in gem shops, they use ground walnuts to polish stones). Backwoods Barbeque, has their brand of feeding the masses. While they are not what you call gormet, they are lip smackin', suck on yer teeth good. Perhaps some of the people complaining about service, weren't watching their own kids, and were too drunk to notice their own behavior. My wife and I go to Backwoods often. If you saw us..you'd know we don't miss many meals. If you are looking for some decent grub, don't mind some country and rock n roll music, little kids screamin', while mom and dad are gettin' drunk, not paying attention to their screaming brats, while the girls behind the counter, try to salvage those people's marriage, kiddin there, but seriously..its good. A little confirmation goes a long way in party planning. (Not a review of their food) I was going to hire Backwoods BBQ for a party at my house. I sent in the catering form, nothing was heard back. I called their office a week later to confirm the order to find out their e-mail system doesn't work, yet I was able to place the order over the phone and was supposed to get a confirmation invoice. Never got the invoice. So I called again a few days before the party to be 100% certain they were going to cater it as I asked. I was told they would call me back later that day. No phone call. So in order to have food for the party I went to another local BBQ joint, Lucille's. We had pulled pork, mesquite chicken, tri-tip chili, macaroni salad, baked beans, dinner salad, mac n cheese and cheesy corn. If I were to sum up this restaurant in one word, it would be ANNOYING. Kind of a weird word to use for a restaurant, but hear me out... First off, its hard to see this place from the road. There is no sign to indicate that its in this shopping center, so naturally you pass by it before realizing you have to make a u-turn. The place is LOUD. The night we went (a Friday night in Sept) there was this lame band playing there. Now someone answer me this: Why do places hire these lame-o bands whose members are Hawaiian shirted middle aged chain smoking losers who can only do cover songs of worn out classic rock from the l970's? Anyhow, the band is so loud that you litterally have to talk loud to the girl behind the counter who is taking your order. The girls behind the counter are EXTRA annoying. As you stand there being deafened by the sound of the band, waiting to be noticed, the girls behind the counter are reading text messages to each other and talking about boys. When they are good and ready, they will acknowledge you. This biggest killer about this place, and ANY bbq place is the sauce. When you go into a bbq restaurant, you expect one thing, if nothing else... homemade sauce. Well, thats not the case here. I saw one of the cell phone girls pouring the sauce out of a huge store bought bottle into the little squeeze bottles they have on the table. OK...Not Good. This place had really good BBQ when they were located off of Green River. Now the food pretty much sucks. We were eager to try it out again when they moved. Boy, were we disappointed. The ribs were flavorless and had way too much fat on them. The chicken, well, forget about it...so much fat, I actually had to spit it out and rinse my mouth with water. Even the backed potato sucked...how can you mess up a baked potato??? Well, that's because it was rotten. I will say the mac-n-cheese was really good, that's why I gave it a 2 star. We had Backwoods Bbq cater out company picnic this past Sunday at eldorado park in long beach. 200 employees ate the best tri tip' pulled pork and chicken they have ever had. Backwoods was on time and had plenty of food for people to come back a second or third time of they wanted. The cost was really fair and way below another company who wanted to charge us more for less food and wanted to put wrist bands on our employees to cut off once they came through the line. My favorite is the barbeque chicken and sausage, green salad, homemade potato salad and a pitcher of beer. They have pool tables, darts AND Mega Touch. You get a 'pan' of peanuts to munch on while you are waiting for your food........ you will never be bored. Seating is picnic style benches so you can feel free to walk around and 'make yourself at home'. It's counter type ordering and then they bring the food to your table. My company hired them to cater for our holiday party yesterday. The ribs were undercooked. I had a few bites and the meat would just not come off the bone unless I forcefully yanked it away from my mouth. So that was it .. I stopped eating the ribs and just ate the chicken. Later on in the day I wasn't feeling too good. Started with a stomach ache. Then I was vomiting. Food poisoning!!! Probably from the undercooked meat or that nasty watery macaroni they had as a side. I just hired Mr. Nolan and the boys at Backwoods BBQ to perform a catering event at Lake Elsinore Ford. This was my event for the gang, I called it my Employee Appreciation Lunch. Nolan brought out the van, the trailer with the Big Boy BBQ on it and cooked Tri-Tip, Chicken, brought sides and all and fed 120 people including guests that came into the store! I've been here a few times as some people that I work with love it. I, personally am not a huge fan. It has an interesting atmosphere with the peanut shell-covered floors and the picnic bench seating, but it's all drowned out by the excess of nascar/country/neon beer sign kitsch. There's also the blaring country music they play (bleh). The food, the food is good, if you like tri-tip, but I couldn't in good conscience recommend their rubbery bbq chicken, which is typically cut into really large strips (even in burritos and sandwiches). A friend recently got their "philly style" cheese steak sandwich, took on bite and wanted to yack. So, yeah, stick to their tri tip and their ranch beans, which are quite good. Their potato salad is a little bit heavy on the mayonnaise for my liking. I think the best thing about this place is an autographed photo of Bill Cosby from the 80's, RAD! We booked them 6 weeks out from when we needed them 6-8-14. 2 weeks out we gave them a head count. 1 week out we let them know the head count. The day before on 6-7-14 gave the final head count and put down our deposit. The day of the event 6-8-14 the owner cancelled our catering 3 hours before our awards dinner. He didnt even tell us he told our friend who urged us to use him. The owner said he had forgotten about our dinner and was tired from his restaurant being a mess and had no food. Found Backwoods BBQ Catering and had Steve come out to look at our site following a detailed email quote. We liked him and made a 50% deposit for our estimate of 80 to 120 folks. We confirmed for 90 the week before. The event was Sunday. Food was to die for. Chicken lovers thought unanimously that it was THE BEST chicken BBQ they had ever eaten. Pulled pork was the very best and didn't require sauce to make it good. But the sauce was great. Tri-tip was excellent and I personally liked the spicy tri-tip chili the best. Salad was fresh and rolls were great. There was other stuff too. No one had a complaint. They kept the line open for seconds as long as folks kept coming. My hubby and I heard about this place from our home inspector who swore by it, so we went to go give it a try. Bottom line: It's all hype; do NOT go here!! It's like one of those places that people *think* are good; and you're like "okay, can you just look at this (and taste it) and tell me, how is this good?!", yet because everyone in the very local community says that it *is* good, and because they have like a few autographed pics on the wall (a sign of a good place? celebrities have been here, oh wow!), it's like, all of a sudden, people become blind and don't remember what "good" means anymore once they go into that environment. It's like, if you just state the simple fact that it's *not* good, you think people will look at you a certain way or think you don't know what you're talking about. It's like a Seinfeld episode... Anyway, that being said, when we arrived to this place, the atmosphere was kinda dive-ey, but it appeared people were hanging out, having fun, listening to the band, so that was cool. It was so loud you couldn't hear each other - if you like that kind of thing, not that we do. As the other reviewers said, there was peanut shells on the floor, blaring country music, picnic benches, which did indeed offer a nice down-home casual feel. We each ordered a combo with ribs and tri-tip; seemed a bit overpriced but we thought well, that's because it must be really good. When it arrived, both our baskets looked so small that we seriously thought they were bringing our food out in separate trips... but no, they didn't, and upon peering underneath, we soon realized that indeed, our little baskets did contain a very small amount of each component of the combo meals. The tri-tip was barely there and very tough, and we each got 2 ribs and there was barely any meat on the bones nor hardly any sauce at all. In fact, one each, of both my hubby's and of my, ribs, was indeed a bone without meat smeared with a little sauce! - and the other rib of ours, each, held 2 bites of meat, literally. We went to look for sauce, thinking that maybe just putting some sauce on our "ribs" (and bone) would give them a little merit, and could not find any on the tables nor near the ordering counter (I know we could have persisted more in waiting and trying to get someone's attention) but it seemed quite busy (shockingly - must have been because of the band) and it just seemed like this coveted thing to acquire from anyone working there, so we just continued with our meal, looking forward to being done with it. And to leaving so we oculd forget about having come there. Again, bottom line: Do NOT go here! (no matter how "good" you hear it is). We contacted Backwoods BBQ to cater our small wedding reception at our home. Steve was wonderful to work with. The food was AMAZING. We had the Tri-tip, Chicken and Pulled Pork combo and everything was delicious!! Steve advertises that you will have more than enough food and he was not kidding. Everybody was completely full on the delicious food and we have plenty leftover for meals for the week and to put in the freezer. I happened upon Backwoods BBQ looking online and I am glad I chose to contact Steve. You will not be disappointed by the quality, quantity, taste and service. I hired Backwood BBQ to cater my wife's 40th B-Day, what a mistake I made! Very unresponsive on days before the event. After trying to get a hold of them for over a week to confirm and add to the head count, I finally received a phone call from the owner Steve. He assured me he would be there himself to make sure the event went off without a hitch. Well the crew showed up late, Steve showed up after the party started and to top it off they set up in a different location after me sending him pictures on where to set up, and people on site showing him where to set up. Food was so so, but definitely overpriced. They claim they bring plenty of food and leave left overs, don't be fooled they will leave you a little meat and a lot of salad. During the party clean up we realized that Steve spilled grease all over our newly finished stone patio. I called him to explain the situation and he said, please send me pictures and I will get someone out to power wash it. After several attempts to get the grease out, the power wash company said that's the best we could do. I spoke with Backwoods again about it and they asked me to get an estimate to repair the stone and they would cover it. Now that they have received the estimate they are refusing to make it right and trying to pass the blame on us. Do yourself a favor when looking for a cater look elsewhere, cause you can get quality food for a better price!
