Delicious smell of roasted meat drew us in. We sat in the small, clean dining room with a bar. We were quick to be served and happy with the polite and timely service. We were given tasty rolls and butter, and even offered more bread, which was nice. We declined because we did not want to fill up. We had the calamari appetizer, rib dinner, and fish franchise dinner. Our food was absolutely delicious. Unfortunately, we found the portion sizes smaller than at other Portuguese grills in our area and the prices higher than displayed on the website. You guys... its been a hot minute since I've had Portuguese food. I hate to even admit it but its a rare cuisine for me since moving to south jersey. I was in the area and was starving. Theres about 4 restaurants right next to each other. The smell coming from backyard grill def drew me in. The staff was hustling! Def busy in there. When you walk in its an open space to order. Looked like there was a sit down area with a waitstaff to the side. I got the BBQ chicken with rice and veggies. Guys... it was amazing. I devoured that chicken like I had never eaten. Granted I was really hungry but man, was it good. Rice and veggies were also good. In true Portuguese food fashion it was a large portion with tons of leftovers. Today was our first time ordering from Backyard Grill. We did so through the Door Dash App. The food was tasty & filling. We ordered Ribs; 2 sides were included, so we chose the Yellow rice & Black beans. It came with 4 extra-small containers of hot sauce. For me, a fish fillet sandwich that came with lettuce, tomatoes and the crunchy fried fish on a nice sub roll. Fries came with it, which I wasn't expecting. I requested Tartar sauce so they put that in a small size container which was larger than the hot sauce containers. This was appreciated because it would have run all over from the heat of the fish. Both meals were placed in separate larger containers and placed in a plastic bag which was tied several times & stapled so we knew nothing was opened on its way here. Also, the Door Dash driver delivered it a few minutes before the "estimated time", so no complaints. read more

The woman who answers the phone and takes orders was so rude to me and when I asked her the price she huffed and hung up the phone not to mention last few times chicken was dry and fries soggy. Came 30 minutes after opening to get a barbecue meal, however, I had to wait 20 minutes to get my meal as they were not ready. I got the BBQ chicken and ribs combo. The meat was tasty and in good portions. I got a double-vegetable option (broccoli, cauliflower and zucchini mix). The vegetables were fresh and cooked just right. My only complaint was that the steamed vegetables were overdosed with garlic, which I am sensitive to. Next time, I will tell them to skip the garlic on the veggies. read more

This place is absolute junk. My son and I ordered takeout "shrimp in garlic sauce" with fries and rice. They give you these tiny, dry shrimp with the veins still in them, and the fries were a lump of grease! Really, I don't know how people couldn't like this, it boggles the mind. I had a really bad experience there. My daughter called me to pick up a grilled chicken salad for her. I did not know when I ordered that she had put in order in. I called them within 5 minutes to make the correction. I was told on the phone it was too late and I had to purchase both. I explained the misunderstanding and that I was only going to pay for one. I drove to pick it up and the counter girl referred me to manager ... this is the one that called about the salad she says. I stumbled upon this restaurant after finding out that another restaurant next door was closed for the Memorial Day weekend. I've never had Portuguese food, but I was starving and this place was open. The dining area is pretty basic, with a lot of chicken-related decor. The waitress brought out warm bread and olives. The bread was crispy on the outside and airy in the inside. I didn't touch the black olives because they're evil, but the green ones were delicious. Why aren't these unlimited? I ordered the 1/2 barbecue chicken with rice and beans. The waitress explained that the 1/2 order means a half chicken, which is a huge portion for a $9 plate including two sides. The yellow rice was buttery and moist, and the black beans, which came in a little ceramic pot, didn't have a lot of flavor on their own but paired with the rice; were delicious! The BBQ chicken itself was flavorful and the drumstick & thigh portions were juicy. The breast was pretty dry, even for someone who hates chicken breast meat. I didn't finish the chicken but got my frijoles to go. I can't say this is the end of my review. Thankfully, it is BYOB so bring some delicious beers or nice red wine to go with all the meat you're about to have! First, they give you warm bread plus a dish of olives. Great way to start a meal! The whole order of 1/2 Chicken and 1/2 BBQ ribs for $15 is enough for two people to share! What a great price. The ribs were delicious, a little salty, and certain parts a little tough to chew. However, still very good. The chicken was a little dry but also still good especially with some hot sauce. It comes with two sides and the rice was a huge, generous portion. Then for dessert, I got the flan, which was amazing. Some of the best I've had. To wash it down, I got an espresso and it was great! Also, amazing service. The staff are super friendly and attentive. I'd say the Backyard Grill is more of a 4.5 star place. It's small, nothing fancy but the food is great! We've tried the BBQ chicken, BBQ ribs, and chicken in garlic sauce. All three were really good and the portions were huge. We went with the half portions and still brought half home. The BBQ ribs were our favorite, not dry but jut the right amount of crisp on the outside. The chicken in garlic sauce was a bit salty but still good. They also start you off with warm rolls, butter. And a little bowl of black olives in seasoned olive oil. They are just so good. So good. And dipping the bread in the oil was the best decision I made all day. The point is, this place is delicious and re portions are so big that I would say it's $, not $$. Go here and you will not be disappointed read more

They serve a small bowl of olives and a basket of fresh rolls, which is a great way to start things off. We ordered a half order of the BBQ chicken and a half order of the backyard enchilada chicken. I ordered their fish Francesa for $17 and look what I got. 3 Small pieces of fish (thought maybe some hidden under veggies-nope) with tons of veggies and rice to fill the tray. That's ridiculous. I came here for lunch today with a co-worker. I got the soup of the day (split pea) and the half rib with rice and beans. My colleague got the grilled sirloin with rice and Portuguese fries, I liked the free olives. They were plump and flavorful. My soup was very runny and came with noodles. Think of campbell's chicken noodle soup noodles with split pea on top. It was different for split pea soup but still OK. My soup also came with bread and butter. I wish the soup was the thicker. My rib entree was very good. I think everything is good besides the chicken. I can imagine the chicken to be very dry. The ribs were just seasoned with salt and pepper. These ribs were not the the fall off the bone tender type ribs. They were meat that gets stuck in between your teeth. The sirloin looked good. He also got a side of eggs to go over his rice. I will try that or the piccdihno next time. Sorry I can't spell Portuguese and the menu is over at the break room and too far for my reach to find the spelling. I'm pretty picky with Portguese BBQ since my family has been loyal to Elm Street BBQ in Newark for over 10 years. It's a good spot for a fast, inexpensive, and healthier alternative to fast food especially when you're not in the mood to cook. If you dine-in, just go through the doors on the right when you come in and you can pretty much choose where you want to sit. They'll serve you warm bread with butter and olives in olive oil to start. Their service is prompt and to the point. I also believe they're BYOB here since I've seen some customers bring wine (not quite certain so just make sure w them). I've had ribs, chicken, chicken picadinho, pork picadinho, fried calamari, shrimp in garlic sauce, and salmon in the past along with rice, beans and fries. I've also been able to try their desserts like the flan. My go-to dishes are usually the ribs and chicken picadinho.. You can't go wrong. The reason for my two star rating-the service was terrible. An older gentleman waited on he did not introduce himself to us. No personality whatsoever.
