Don't think those big bone beef ribs you get at American BBQ joints. Devil is in the details. What made this place a 3, star is that the staff doesn't introduce the menu and items well. For example, I got the beef ribs with vegetables and sweet plantains (both VERY good btw), they failed to explain that there are SPICY PICKLED VEGETABLES THAT GOES WITH IT. The beef ribs are delicious, the BBQ chicken could have been cooked more but was enjoyable, I wouldn't order a salad from here again, the lettuce was RED/BROWN and they still served it, when I called to complain they said they would send me a new one and it was the same lettuce but with the toppings covering it. This is a small place with tons of charm. They have a few tables inside to eat as well as some outside. The food is season well. You can actually taste the firewood they use. My favorite by far was the season paella. They have a good variety of empanadas. I had beef and Buffalo chicken. They both were good with enough meat inside. You get a good amount of food. I read such wonderful things about this place, so I was eager to get in there and try it out! Well, unfortunately my experience was not a good one and it totally left a bad taste in my mouth! Here's why... I went in on a Saturday night a little after 6:30pm and had planned to eat inside. Soon as I walked in, I noticed that the three tables were already occupied, so I placed my order to-go. My order was rather simple- 1/2 chicken, 1/2 ribs with rice (already done), black beans (already done), custard cups (already done), soup (already done) and 2 empanadas! The guy at the counter was very nice but never told me that I would be waiting a very long time for my food. The first thing that annoyed me was the young boy who was well under 18 years old, placed my change down on the table and didn't put it in my hand- HUGE PET PEEEVE of mine! Why was he even handling money anyway? They offered everyone there a small cup of soup and bread which was a nice gesture but I just wanted my food! After waiting well over an hour, I kindly asked for a refund because I couldn't wait any longer. Instead of the lady being apologetic- she scolded me saying I was told I had to wait! I was blown away and very disappointed by her attitude. Her vibe was she didn't care about my business and made no attempt to retain it. It was almost as if she was happy I was leaving! Here's another thing I noticed: I didn't see any hand washing during my visit. The young boy went from preparing soup, to handling money, to picking up bread without washing his hands or putting on gloves. I also watched him prepare someone's soup to-go, and scrapped the greens from the soup into the container with his finger! I probably should've walked out then.... The desserts are clearly bought from a store. They taste like they're frozen out of a box. Communication is an issue as well and was not happy with the cleanliness of the kitchen which is open air. But its good. Filling. I had picadinho. Sauce was very bland. Chicken it it was good and shrimp as well but the pork was not done right at all. Was looking for something warm on a cold night and came across this spot on Yelp! It was just what the doctor ordered. Everything sounded delicious from the empanadas to the ribs. And though I had originally ordered the beef ribs, the owner approached me and personally recommended the off-menu (weekend special) short ribs with mashed potatoes. He even offered me a sample first but I told him "let's do it" with complete confidence in his recommendation, and boy was it good! It wasn't overly seasoned and it was fall off the bone delicious. My friends' dishes were also not overly seasoned and everyone had a great time. Water seems to be bottled only but it was only a buck or so. We sat at the counter and though it may seem tight, it provided enough space. Great food, and even the bread at the beginning is excellent. So we were looking for a place to take food home, considering the current COVID-19 situation. I remembered a delicious empanada I had here a while back, and figured we would try it for dinner. There are only a couple of tables, so this is an ideal spot for take-out. We decided on the 1/2 chicken - 1/2 pork ribs combo with rice and beans, and the steak sandwich with fries. I also got a custard cup (looks like a little custard tart) to take home - more on that later! While we were sitting there, they were also doing a brisk pick-up business, which was nice. It was taking a while, which was fine, and they offered us a taste of the soup of the day - creamy tomato with roasted chicken. He asked if wanted one or two, but since I am usually not a fan of tomato soup, we said one. We both tasted it, and looked at each with the same surprise. It was amazing! We expected it to taste good, or they wouldn't have offered it to us. But this was probably the best version of ANY tomato soup we have had. We also decided to get a small soup to take home - and that's exactly what I am having for lunch today....LOL So we got our food and headed home. The steak sandwich was delicious - everything from the steak to the onions and peppers and bread was perfect. The right proportion of inside to bread. The fries were a bit of a disappointment - they tasted a little "off". Perhaps the oil was nearing the end of it's useful life, or maybe it was just an end-of-day issue. The huge pile of rice and beans was a surprise - there was lots of flavor. The ribs were extremely flavorful - with the addition of the bbq sauce. The were, however, very chewy. Now I don't really like fall-off-the-bone ribs - there should be some pull to it, but these were too chewy. The flavor was perfect, so perhaps again it was an end-of-the-day issue. The chicken was tender and flavorful, and with the heap of rice and beans - it was perfect. The bbq sauce, along with the hot sauce, added a perfect amount of sweet spice to everything. Now don't even get me started on the custard cup - I took one bite and was sorry I didn't get more. It was the absolute perfect end to this meal. I wish this place was a little closer to my house - I'd be here once a week! ***Update - just had the creamy tomato and roasted chicken soup for lunch - it was just as good reheated as it was when we tried it last night!!! My folks lived in Portugal and I've been 8-10 times for work. This is the most legit Piri-Piri you will get anywhere in North Jersey. It's so simple and delicious. Ask for extra sauce. I was in town for work this past wk and always on the lookout for new and tasty places to eat dinner. Portugalo popped up on my YELP radar and it had all the attributes I look for: Neighborhood place, small in size but big in heart - with some table service seating , BYOB, family owned and operated, unique menu and passionate ethnocentric flavors....yup had to go for dinner. My work colleague and I went for dinner this week and I'm happy to report that this is now on my RETURN every NJ VISIT rotation! Neighborhood gem clearly serving authentic food - based in the heavy stream of Portuguese locals coming in to take away food at dinner hour on a week night ! Always a great sign. The owner couldn't be a nicer guy ! And the restaurant is cute and sparkling clean. The owner is Portuguese-American and from the neighborhood ! This is a fairly new restaurant and he grills all the meats on a charcoal spit in the back. The wonderful smells of rotating meats (pork and chicken) filled the small and tidy restaurant. For starters we shared a gigantic salad and we also ordered the steamed clams w a garlic and wine broth (delicious). The owner brought over a small plate of warm bread (rolls) that were excellent, followed by a complimentary plate of homemade cured sausage that was thinly sliced and delicious (home made charcuterie !!) and some nice hard sharp cheese that was a really nice touch ! I love this guy ! He also brought over a few slices of a sausage and cheese sourdough bread he makes himself w his own sourdough starter ! Yippee ! Also delicious ! For main dishes I had the full rack of St Louis Style pork ribs with way more rice and beans than a family of four could eat and my colleague has the skirt steak special for the night ! Both excellent quality and generously portioned ! The owner was kind enough to open and serve our BYOB Portuguese red wine and he joined before we finished our gigantic and yummy meal for a even better Portuguese glass of red wine - which was great. Nice nice way to end a perfect dinner. I love authentic places like this. We will absolutely be back and all the best to these lovely owners and staff !! Thanks for the great hospitality and meal !!
