Came for a quick lunch. I think this place is a bar and food is an afterthought. The Ceasar salad was honestly the best thing we had here. We added chicken and it was delicious! They didn't skimp either. The classic burger was ok, nothing special. The fries are ok. We also had hummus spread. We should've known better, it wasn't very good. The flatbread wasn't bad. This is classic bar food. I'm wary of rating an establishment like this, because normally the food isn't the best. If you're just coming to eat it's a no, if you're coming to drink I can see the appeal. It's a no for us. Waitress was great though.

    Front of restaurant

Just left Backyard on Broadway with my boyfriend and our kids. We walked into the restaurant and was greeted by only a sign "please wait to be seated" we stood there for ~6/7 minutes and waited patiently, as other patrons walked right into the back past the sign. The kids took pictures so we weren't in an imminent rush to be seated, but after no one approached us after several minutes we figured maybe the sign was outdated and we decided to walk to where the tables were. The hostess finally approached us (not even looking at us) and said "are you joining a party already here" I said "no we're not, we are a party of 4." And she (still not looking at us) pointed in the direction of the front door "go back to the host stand where it says 'wait to be seated." I said "well, we were there for several minutes and no one came up to us." She walked away without apologizing for the wait, without any explanation. We left and went to Down on Grayson. Way better service, where we were IMMEDIATELY greeted by multiple hostesses and workers and seated within 30 seconds. Thanks for the shitty first time experience, we won't be back!

Tried out Backyard on Broadway mainly so my kid could run around and burn some energy in the park area but I ended up loving the chill, laid-back vibe! Our server was super sweet and checked on us often, which I really appreciated. We ordered quite a few different things, and overall, they were okay. My husband got the chili cheese dog and really enjoyed it ! There was lots of cheese and looked amazing! The root beer cream soda was a miss for me though. I was expecting something fizzy, but it wasn't carbonated at all. The caramel churros were unfortunately really hard, and the Frito pie came out cold and kind of bland. BUT the pizza totally made up for it. It was so good, and I honestly could've eaten the whole thing myself if it wasn't for my kid. The kids' chicken strips were also really fresh and tasty! Overall, we had a great time. The atmosphere and service were awesome, and I'd definitely come back to try more menu items next time!

I love this location, this was a first time here and really enjoyed the experience. Food was delightful, my children enjoyed the playground, the ambiance is chill. We had an awesome server Cody, he was cheerful and willing to assist in any way. Will definitely come back!

Food was great they expanded playground for the littles. Highly recommend their loaded nachos

We have been back 3 times in the past 6 weeks! Everything continues to be amazing, from service to the food. We have been disappointed though that each time we return, they do not have the Japanese seltzer. We have been back on a Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. We really enjoy those drinks and keep hoping they will be in stock. New things we have tried are the PB&J pizza, rum punch, and churros. We have had the wings with hot honey and the cheese pizza for our kids every time. All hot and amazing. One time they accidentally burned the pizza, but quickly replaced it and added in some churros, which were crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. Amazing. I think we are regulars at this point! Kids love the playground and there are always other kiddos to play with. Excellent music too!

Love. Cold brew. Good time !!!!!!

The Modernist -- A True Speakeasy Experience in San Antonio…read more If you're in downtown San Antonio, take a break from the River Walk and check out The Modernist. This is a true speakeasy-style lounge that's easy to overlook from the outside--it looks like a regular, unassuming place. But once you step inside, the atmosphere completely changes. The interior is cozy, intimate, and has that hidden-gem feeling you want from a speakeasy. The staff members are incredibly friendly and welcoming, which made the experience even better. I had the pleasure of having Adan behind the bar, and this guy knows how to make a good drink! As always, I started with my go-to Old Fashioned. I have to say, it was easily one of my top two Old Fashioneds I've ever had. Then I told Adan to surprise me, and he came up with some kind of peanut butter chocolate martini. Let me just say... it was a true pleasure. Rich, smooth, and absolutely delicious. What I really liked about The Modernist is that it feels like a place the locals actually frequent rather than just another tourist spot. I genuinely had a great time here. If you're visiting San Antonio and find yourself downtown, give The Modernist a try. Step away from the River Walk for a little while--you might just discover your new favorite spot.

For her second drink, she told the bartender to surprise her. He gave her a look and asked more than once if she was sure she wanted him to surprise her. Instead of making her an actual cocktail, he poured her what seemed to be a straight, extremely bitter liqueur. The whole interaction felt sarcastic and like he was intentionally messing with her rather than trying to make her something she would enjoy. What bothered me most was the attitude behind it. We weren't being rude, demanding, or causing problems. We were there to have a good time and experience the whole "tell us what you like and we'll make you something" concept. I did call the number listed for the business afterward trying to speak to someone about it. The person who answered said I had the wrong number and didn't know what I was talking about. I got angry during that call and said some things I shouldn't have, and I can admit that. But that doesn't change how disappointing the experience at the bar was. We expected a creative and welcoming experience and instead left feeling like my wife had been mocked. I hope management sees this and addresses it, because the concept of the place is great, but the way we were treated completely ruined it for us

So I went to Bar 1919 in Southtown, a tucked-away speakeasy-style bar. I'd heard it could be difficult to find, and that mystery is part of the charm. Once I stepped inside, I was struck by how polished and inviting it felt: low amber lighting, dark wood, intimate seating, and a quiet hum of conversation that made the room feel removed from the rest of the city. The atmosphere was elegant without feeling stiff. The dim light glowed against the bar, and the cozy layout made it easy to settle in. There was something satisfying about searching for the entrance and then emerging into such a carefully designed space. [NAME] took care of me, and the service was warm and attentive. Parking along the street is free (along the fence line of Sam Houston) and was not an issue even for a holiday. There is a paid parking lot that is secure and available too so note that if ever you have an issue finding a good spot. Walking into Slow Ride is like walking into your tio's (uncle) or a grandpa's cool, 70's/80;s vibey, and home-y bar. This is the kind of spot where every picture you take of yourself, or your friends, will look like you took it in the 80's! This is not a bad thing either. Seriously. It IS A VIBE here! Cushy seats at the bar was my favorite spot to hang out while we had some cold beers and a shot to go alongside it too. They have beer and shot combos here around $8. You get plenty of choices on beer and liquor of choice. I opted for a tallboy Lonestar and a small shot of the Mexican Candy. My sister got a Live Oak Hefe in a can (she likes Blue Moon so this was the closest thing to it and she liked it!) and later a Shiner in a bottle. I also decided to close out with a daiquiri that was super delicious and offered in nice glassware. Patio out in the back is spacious and a great spot to hang out with a group of friends. The back space is taken care of and has a modern look to it out there. I can see it being a nice vibe outside on a pretty day too. Jukebox is legit! All great music selections from all genres on CDs and pretty cheap too to play 5-8 songs. The artwork around here is worth a look around too. I love all the unique Garfield toys surrounding the bar area too. All of the back bar is so great with the wooden shelving and lighting too. You can see many honorable nods to those who currently or have served. It's a great thing to see especially so close to Sam Houston. One thing I have a pet peeve on is any service bar who has to keep my card on file. I am the worst person who won't remember so I have to be extra careful when bars keep my card. I usually walk and don't mind paying the 20+% tab walk fee but I do want my card back so I have to get everyone who is with me to remind me to go get it. That's why I am giving it 4 stars. I am looking forward to coming back in the future and bringing some more family and friends, though. This spot is so nostalgic and their social is super active and will promote DJs and sets happening that week and into the weekend. Go check them out and play some pool.
