Cheeseburger, Cajun fries

Very small diner atmosphere. The burger was solid and the Cajun fries were good. The mini biscuits were a very nice touch as well. Just be prepared to wait for your food. If you're on a time crunch it could be a bit of wait for you.

I had been following them since they opened and finally visited when family was in town visiting. It was after 1pm, so not too busy, and we sat in a booth in the center of the restaurant. Server was by shortly with menus and took our drink orders. I was in a breakfast mood, so I ordered the Little Brother Platter to get some variety of their wares. I opted for apple slices (which I intended to put on top of the pancakes), and a side of a biscuit and gravy to share with my girlfriend. The platter listed a 1/4 pound of bacon, which equated to six perfectly cooked slices. My three over-easy eggs were good, as well, still runny but no slime. Apple slices had good cinnamon flavor. I do have to ding the cakes, though, they were a bit too soft and fell apart before I could get them on the fork. The biscuit with the gravy was huge, and tasty. Gravy was good, too, though just white gravy. Girlfriend's omelet was spot on, and her son cooed over his meatloaf with mashed potatoes and gravy. (luckily I got the leftovers) Server (Katy?) was friendly and efficient. Food wasn't super fast coming out, but worth the wait. I hear their burgers are pretty good, too, if you want something a bit 'fancier' than Pete's or Cookout. I've also had the privilege of delivering a few orders on DoorDash. Nice to see a family style restaurant offering on there locally.

I really wanted to like Nana Morrison's in Cary because I had heard so much hype about it, but this…read morewas a huge disappointment for me. As an African American woman, soul food is more than just food to me. There's a certain authenticity and flavor I expect when I walk into a soul food restaurant. I ordered several items and after tasting everything, I honestly ended up throwing the entire meal away. I took a bite or spoonful of each item just to give everything a fair chance, and every time I moved on to the next thing, it was another disappointment. The mashed potatoes had a strange aftertaste that I couldn't get past. I don't know if it was the gravy or something else, but something tasted off. The barbecue ribs tasted more boiled than slow cooked and were completely drenched in sauce. The cabbage was overwhelmed with vinegar and lacked seasoning. The mac and cheese tasted more like overcooked noodles with cheese instead of flavorful baked mac and cheese. The cornbread was dry, and even the cake was dry. I will say the restaurant was clean and the employees were friendly, so I have no complaints there. My issue was with the food quality and value for the price. Spending around $80 for a meal like this did not feel worth it at all. Maybe other people love it, but based on my experience, I don't understand the hype. The food just did not taste authentic or well prepared to me. I wish I had stuck with my original plans and just gone to Mikey's Diner in Wilson, North Carolina instead. At least I would have left satisfied. For me, this wasn't worth the drive, wasn't worth the money, and I won't be returning.

They are located in a nice little spot with ample parking and it's easy accessible. The interior is simple but clean. Plenty of seating. The ladies who work here are very friendly and helpful, came around a few times to check on me, offered fried side to go with the greens , offered a refill on my sweet tea. Great service! About the food. Probably the BEST FRIED CHICKEN in the area. I really can't judge on that because I haven't sampled other fried chicken in the vicinity but based on my own research of sampling fried chicken all over North Carolina, I feel confident in my assumption. It was fried just right. It was SEASONED. It had a very nice batter that was crunchy and the chicken in the inside was tender and juicy. Every bite was tender and juicy. These ladies should teach a cooking class on how to make fried chicken-to other restaurants. The SWEET POTATOES were perfectly cooked and flavored in butter and cinnamon. You could eat it as a dessert. But not overly sweet. Just right. The GREENS were tender and seasoned perfectly. Greens and fried side with their delicious CORNBREAD could be a meal in itself. The SWEET TEA-perfect! All around, best home cooked food/soul food you can get. I will be back and I highly recommend for true SOUTHERN COMFORT food.

On my first visit, I ordered the hamburger steak with rice, along with mac and cheese and green beans for my sides. Everything was good and full of flavor. The sides definitely gave classic comfort, out-the-box/canned vibes--but still seasoned well and satisfying. Most importantly, it's refreshing to have something in Garner that isn't just another traditional fast-food spot. The service was great and the staff was friendly and welcoming. Looking forward to coming back and trying more off the menu!

While the location is great, the business doesn't stand out well enough to attract those that may not be looking for it. I parked into the back and entered the back door. While they sell soul food, the vibes feel super Jamaican. Black paint with green and yellow accents. Fairly large and very clean dining area. The cashier didn't really greet me when I walked up. She wasn't rude, but she wasn't friendly or welcoming. She did complement my shirt. Her non-verbal cues made me feel rushed. I had to ask her if they were sold out of anything. That information was not offered. I also had to ask her the price. I ended up ordering the lamb chops plate that came with rice, and two side. I opted for the collards and mac n cheese. It took maybe 5-8 minutes for my plate to come out. 3 other people came in, ordered and left before I did. I think it was because theybhad to grill the lamb chops. Visually the food looked delicious. Very generous serving of everything. However, the collards were the most disappointing collards I've ever had. They didn't taste bad. They just weren't seasoned AT ALL!! they just tasted like a collard with pepper flakes. The rice was just plain and Not seasoned. The mac n cheese was pretty good. They need to season the pasta a bit more and use a more flavorful cheese. The star was the lamb chops. They were a good size, seasoned extremely well, tender, and grilled to perfection! On top of that they gave me 4. They're They're the reason I'm giving 4 stars. I washed all of that down with a slice of their pineapple cake. It tasted like box cake with canned crushed pineapple on top. But it was delicious. I'd go back just for the lamb chops and cake. At $40 though, i won't go back too often. I hope the other sides are much better though!!

It looked pretty empty from outside but…read morethere were two other folks inside waiting for their food and someone waiting to pick-up a doordash order. The interior has lots of hints to music (art and decor) which I like but I'm not sure how it ties into the Downtown Grub name. The cashier gave us time to review the menu (on the wall). We ordered cheesesteak eggrolls and a two hot dog plate with fries. We wanted to get different toppings on the dogs but that was going to be difficult with their new POS system. We offered to just get the same thing but we were told that they'd get it and she wrote down our topping choices. After paying we were told it would be 20-30 minutes. That was longer than we were hoping dinner would take but I know kitchens can be tough. Our food comes out and the server says "I don't think those hot dog toppings are right." And, lo and behold, she was right. I'm not sure I've ever seen a server bring food to the table knowing that it's not what was ordered. She offered to fix it but after 20 min, we were just ready to eat. The hot dogs themselves were ok. Chili had good flavor. The first bite of the fries was great. They were really well seasoned...was what we thought. But they quickly became super salty. The cheesesteak eggrolls seemed to be just chopped steak eggrolls. They were massive but I didn't taste any cheese in the mix. I also wish they were crispy. For us, after a long wait, the meal just let us down.

Blessedly, that is more than off-set by.......the quality and taste!! It seemed that everyone was up on the buffet angle, and it definitely seems the way to go. Deep fried shrimp, fried steaks and gravy, okra, each dish made fresh repeatedly and palette pleasing EVERY TIME. The green beans were so good I actually had to complement the chef (Do your thing Dom!! It was an honor to meet you all!) It was.... Wait a minute......actually disregard all I've said. (Last thing we need is unappreciative riff-raff with the taste buds of a 4th grader, and horrible Kens and Karens making wild requests and slowing down the line and ruining a _GREAT_ thing). So, umm, I forgot to mention the roaches! Huge! With 3 inch teeth and razor claws! Never seen the like. We barely escaped with our lives. I fought off two of them at once and escorted a couple customers to safety. Also, it's in high-crime neighborhood. M....Machine Gun Kelly came out of his grave and hit thr bank across the street! It'll be on tonight's news for sure!! New rating: .0067/30 Stay away from the store and the green beans! Ya greedy so-and-so! Cheers and love to all

While I didn't recognize the name, I recognize some of the photos on the website from social media. After a quick glance at the menu, I decided that I would be stopping by there to eat. I could have called or ordered online, but I wanted to put their claim for quick service to the test. Also, their prices weren't astronomical. Now, I was a bit surprised that the restaurant was located inside of a corner/juice store. But hey, I'm not Stranger to "gas station" food, so challenge accepted. I love the idea oc community innovation and joint-use spaces. The place is 100% take-out. Ordering was easy, but it can get loud in there so you have to yell a bit. Not all menu items are on the website. Do check the white board in front of the register. The day that I was there, strawberry banana pudding was a specialty on the menu. I didn't order it, but wished I had. I ordered, oxtail (it's auto served over a bed of rice and peas) with collards and mac n cheese, Catfish with Mac n cheese and yams, finally sticky ribs with cabbage and rice and pease. The collards were way too salty. They were cooked too mushy and I couldn't really taste the greens. The cabbage were almost too salty, but when paired with tbe rice and pease, they were perfect along both the oxtail and the ribs. The ribs were tender and delicious. A little over sauced for my liking, but still delicious. The mac and cheese and yams were delicious. Nothing special, but delicious enough that you want to order them at every visit. The stars were the oxtail and the Catfish. The oxtail were seasoned down to the bone and just perfect. This was my 4th try for oxtail since moving to Raleigh 7 months ago they have everyone else beat!! The portion was generous and I loved that it was automatically served over rice and peas as part of the meal. But the Catfish. THE CATFISH!! Perfectly seasoned and fried. My ride home was about 15 minutes and it was still crispy when I arrived despite being packaged in a Styrofoam plate. It was so light , crispy, and flaky. That will probably be my #1 go-to at this place. They were super busy from the time I arrived to the time I left so it took my order about 20 minutes. Try to call, order online directly from them or via doordash. Don't be afraid of the area. I know what tv teaches you, but just be open to exploring different communities. I can't wait for my next Catfish plate!!!!!
