I'm never a fan of leaving a less than perfect review. While my experience wasn't great, I would be back! A beautiful building that deserves some credit. Slow night and I'm sure the hustle and bustle of a weekend evening would be worth the visit. This was my first visit to this location and it was a bit confusing. The hostess was not at the front when we arrived. So we waited for her to return. Once we checked in she told us to go up stairs and we'd be greeted by another hostess. I asked if we should use the elevator, to which she replied "ya, that's what elevators are for". Well thanks for the clarification, I didn't know that the stairs weren't an option. Once we arrived on the upper floor we stood there like idiots and had to walk around to find someone to seat us. Not a great start. Food service was pretty good. Our server was friendly and attentive, but lacked that polished service and look that The Keg typically offers. She seemed rushed and perhaps lacking support and communication from her team. I think had there been appropriate support staff, she'd likely have been great. Where The Keg fell short this visit was the mains. My Blackened Chicken was dry, luckily the hot honey helped elevate the flavour. The mashed potatoes were par, and the green beans were sad... Zero seasoning. I brought this up with the server and she did offer to replace them, but they should have never been plated in the first place. The Prime Rib was good, but the crispy onions were limp. Crème Brûlée was perfect. Drinks were great. Certainly room for improvement. But not quite typical Keg caliber. Nothing awful happened so a solid 4 stars. read more

The service quality was extremely poor, and the staff training was insufficient, which severely impacted my dining experience. I felt discriminated against. Firstly, after we were seated, no staff came to serve us. We had to wait a long time before someone finally arrived. Secondly, we were not provided with pre-meal bread and had to ask for it ourselves. Thirdly, after confirming our order with the server, two dishes were served incorrectly. My order of tuna tartare and soup was replaced with a salad and toast. I believe this was a deliberate act rather than a simple mistake! My family and I really enjoyed the food and hospitality we had this evening at the keg located at downtown St.johns, my steak was cooked to perfection medium rear with the right amount of seasoning and the baked potato was on point. service was fast and friendly, waiter was awesome made sure we had everything we needed and kept the drinks and water flowing. Compared to other similar class restaurants I have been to the price was avarage, I did leave with the feeling we got our money's worth which is nice. Fantastic establishment for the whole family! With a jaw-dropping view and even better staff. They were extremely accommodating to every one of our needs and quite polite. Now, let's move on to what you've all been waiting for... The Food!! The appetizers arrived quickly and were displayed in a quaint manner that was neither distracting nor mundane. Both the Baked Brie and Tuna Tartare were satisfying without being filling, leaving you craving more in just the right way. And the main course... Was ENTRANCING. The moment my teriyaki steak arrived I felt all the air in my lungs expel! And my mouth began to water. The steak was cooked to perfection, a flawless well done! My father lives in Toronto and frequents The Keg Restaurant there. We traveled Newfoundland from Deer Lake North, up down and across for two weeks ending up in St John's. On the way in my dad saw The Keg Restaurant and wanted to have dinner there. I called from my cell and he called from the hotel phone for almost an hour with no answer. So I went online and reserved a table for two. There were no options so I figured it was standard. When we got there we got our notifier and went to the bar. The guy and lady at the bar ignored us for a good five minutes talking to him me another and taking care of patrons around us until I got their attention. I ordered mine and my father's drinks and closed out, as we were only waiting on our table. When called we were taken upstairs to a wobbly four seat table made up of two solid wooden tables in a cubby. I looked at the window for 16 minutes and there was a similar table with no occupants, wondering why we were not seated there. The food was good but the server was green and overwhelmed. At the end of our meal I saw what looked like two managers chatting, so I decided to approach, introduced myself and told her about our experience. She was briggedy and bold as she asked me if we complained. I didn't want to tell her our impression was not good for the restaurant and complaining seemed like a bad idea, but tried to keep the conversation on key points. This manager took no responsibility for anything and would hear nothing of their wrong doing. She was out right rude to me as a customer! I love the view of the harbor and the host offered me a selection of King Crab that was not listed on the menu. It was reasonably priced and very tasty. The garlic mashed potatoes were also food and portioned just right. Me waitress Courtney was very attentive also and I really enjoyed the ambience. All in all, an excellent dinner experience and highly recommended, especially if you are a fan of King Crab. I went for my birthday with my best friends. They called us ten minutes before our reservation to see if we were still coming. Uh, yah, of course. It's my birthday and they're my best friends and it's THE KEG. There was a lot of snow outside, but not any snow inside. Inside was like a cool club. And I'm been to a bunch of clubs before. But when we showed up, we couldn't see any other customers in the dining room. I thought my best friends rented out the whole restaurant for us, but it turns out everyone else was upstairs. We were brought to our table and passed by all the people from our of town who still came even with the snow outside. We felt VERY fancy since we had a corner table that was a circle. The lady asked us if we wanted any drinks and I was like, give me a minute, I didn't even look at the menu yet. I asked what kind of beer they had "on tap" because it seemed like the right thing to do, and it worked out pretty good. One of my best friends wanted wine but her baby (who's growing inside of her) doesn't like wine yet so she only had a mint cucumber drink and it was to die for but only as a metafor. I ordered the jupiter mushrooms and garbled them until they were all gone. Someone else had a steak with cheese on it and at first I was like you can't put cheese on steak but it turns out you can! We talked about many things like my birthday and how birthdays are fun but we couldn't remember if the Will Smith movie with the channel selector was Switch or Hitch or Click or Independence Day. Three and a half stars. This Canadian chain invested some serious cash in this modern location. It is open, classy and comfortable, yet without being too fussy or unapproachable. The good and bad of this place is that it is mostly good, yet leaves very little "wow" in terms of quality, experience or value. Here are some takeaways: 1. Service was good overall. My server (Melissa) was very good, yet you got the sense that the chain really pushes up-selling over service. 2. The 49$ bacon-wrapped filet was very good, if a bit cool, yet for 49$ should be. And we can stop wrapping a filet in fatty bacon now that it is 2017. The NY Strip was a lower quality cut of meat than most steakhouse strips. 3. The wine list is largely mass-produced offerings from global conglomerates. They do not show the vintages, which further indicates a lack of seriousness about wine. A cab from 2012 will have a different taste and value than the same one from 2016. They spent enough money on this place to have a proper wine service. For cocktails, the sangria was delicious, yet mostly ice. 4. The vegetable sides on the plate are like you would fix at home on a rainy weeknight- good, yet simple. This may be worth a visit, especially if you need a familiar place that has a bit more class than Jack Astor's next door where everyone in your party can find something they will more-or-less enjoy. read more

The four stars are because of the steak. It was indeed excellent. Everything else we've tried in this place is ok. Soup, salad, the garlic shrimp, crab cakes. Maybe 3 stars. Fine but we've seen better in this town. The steak is the star, and really, if you want seafood go somewhere specializing in it (plenty to choose from within walking distance). Surprisingly for a meat restaurant, their burgers are mediocre. The service was quick, efficient and very polite. A waiter was hovering nearby (the place was about 2/3 full and it's a big place) pretty much all the time. The sitting is very comfortable, not cramped in any way (a rarity in this area). Prime rib is what they push, and prime rib is what you should take. The New York is pretty fine as well. Prices are on the high-ish side, expect to pay around 40$ for a 14 ounce prime rib, with a side order of your choosing. There's a smaller version as we The "classics", sirloin, New York and the like, are around 40-50$, but they throw in a salad as well. I would skip the deserts. They present well, but aren't worth the price. Skip a couple streets up and you'll find much better for less. All in all, this place has "steak house" in its name, so go in for a steak and you should be ok. read more

An absolutely amazing experience from start to finish. The decor in this place is wonderful and even includes an elevator to allow any guests with disabilities access to the second floor. There is seating available for both inside and out with heat lamps available for diners outside. The views of the harbour and signal hill make this location even more special. Our visit was during Lobster Summer and my family and I indulged. Our waitress, Andrea, was attentive and friendly and made you feel like part of the family. We had baked Brie for an appie, which Andrea said she requested extra Melba toast for us to have with it as she finds "there is never enough" and it was perfect. Biancas, Basho and Raymond's prices for cheap, low grade food. You're better off going to Swiss Chalet. They use very low grade beef with recipes so basic they can use people in the kitchen who make only minimum wage. Everything that can be done to take cost out of the food has been done. Even the escargot are served in mushrooms so they can serve you tiny escargot. A steak here is $40. Entrees at Bianca's are $40. Do the math. The only reason I can see people eating here is that they're clueless and don't know any better. Boy, I thought the Keg had some type of standards across the country. I usually love the steakhouse for its consistency, but this Keg displayed none of the traits I love. First they screwed up the reservation placing us at a table in front of a window staring directly at the sun. I know the sunny weather is not usually out as much as this summer, but having blinds might be a good idea for the days it is.. We had to move tables to an area where the windows did have blinds. Next, the appetizers were cold. I usually have to wait 5 minutes to eat mushroom neptune. This time it was a rush to eat them as fast as I could to keep the little bit of warmth they had. I also ordered a ceased salad and that came out as the same time appie....ever hear of three courses Keg? Next round of disappointment, the steak was bar room quality at best. I had the new york strip and I told the waitress to take it back after two bites. I didn't feel like cramping out my jaw mussels just to get through this piece of rawhide. My wife's striplion was stringy and looked like it had been frozen and thawed six times. She sent her's back as well. The side dishes didn't come out with the entrees and had to be asked for, the wine took 10 minutes to fetch. Brutal experience. The waitress was accommodating and told us they would comp the two meals returned. The bill came and they took off the ceased salad. If I could chart my experience at this restaurant, it would look like a stock that had a great initial public offering (great appetizer and beer after 18 hours of flying), fell into a slump (slow service, long wait for food) and rose slightly to finish off even (lobster and steak...lobster was local and amazing, steak was more than medium cooked on the inside). That said, it is one of THE restaurants to go to in St. John's if you want casual but classy dining. My wife and I go here for celebration meals, as well as going with friends for birthdays. Whether it's just the two of us, or a large group of up to 20 people, the service is always stellar. They're even willing to store a small gift and cake to be brought out at the end of the meal. We've only ever had a couple of small problems, and these have always been quickly dealt with, even on busy nights. The steak isn't the best I've ever had, but it's up there, and always cooked amazingly. They're one of the few places that I go to that doesn't overcook my steak. They're also not as expensive as people make them out to be, depending on what you order. Whether you're looking for an intimate night out, or a get together with lots of friends, I highly recommend the Keg. read more

The biggest attribute of The Keg is that they are consistent. The service and food is always excellent and I have never had a bad experience. The wait staff are always professional and knowledgeable about the food and wine they are serving. The food is always good. There are always some kind of seasonal specials. However, this is a steakhouse and that is all I have ever ordered. Over the years I've had their strip loin, ribeye, sirloin, rib steak, & prime rib. All have been wonderful. I order mine cooked medium and it is always cooked perfectly and melt in your mouth delicious. They have several choices of sides. Baked potato, garlic mash, rice, french fries, etc. My personal favorite is twice baked potato. It is basically mashed potato with bacon, chive and other fixins, baked inside a potato skin. Definitely a must - try. While this is far from my favorite restaurant in St. John's (heck, it's not even my favorite place to get a steak), I can trust that I will always have a great meal, accompanied by great service. read more

And it's in an amazing location, on the waterfront downtown St. John's. Had the spinach dip, which was really, really great, and perfect temperature. The next time though, I would opt for the nachos. They looked/tasted amazing, and it's a huge portion. The prices on appetizers were really reasonable, and ended up costing much less than I would have imagined (tip included, $8 each between two). Monday at 6:30 pm, third visit. I was seated immediatly by a friendly hostess. The waiter came to my table within a minute, granted it was not packed at all. The waiter was friendly and quick. Its a very relaxed but delicious steakhouse. I would say its one of the best that I have been to for steak. There are always sports on tv. They have a very large selection of wines and some drinks. The pricing for steaks is somewhat high however it is definitly worth it. The bread was, well bread not super great. Steak was made to order and was absolutely delicious. Just what you would expect from a chain steakhouse. Food is not bad some of the sides and appetizers are excellent. Parking is absolutely terrible, seriously there is NO parking and it is not uncommon to have to walk 20 or more minutes from your car, given our climate most of the year that in and of itself is a serious deterrent to eating here. The steak is a little over priced but still well prepared and served in a pleasing fashion. Would not recommend prime rib as they cook it in the oven. The waitress apologized when she realized it 15 mins later. When we placed our orders we were told there were no twice baked potatoes left, we were all looking forward to these and had to change our sides. When the the food arrived, I was brought out the wrong steak, I didn't want to wait for a new one so I ate what I was given. When I got home I realized I was charged $9 extra for something I didn't order. The food was actually pretty good, my steak (although wrong) was cooked med-rare like I like it. THE KEG in St John's continues to be massively disappointing. Last night 2 August 2013 will be my last visit there. Took the bartender 15 minutes to make the drink before 10 minutes waiting to order and we had seats at the bar. our table ordered 4 steaks/meats "WHAT THEY ARE SUPPOSEDLY RENOUNDED FOR" AND 2 OT HALF WERE JUST WRONG NOT CLOSE JUST WRONG!! Heather's prim rib came very rare/RAW and she ordered medium rare, Dana's steak came very well done and she asked for medium. To be fair they did replace the steak rather quickly and Heather being Heather just ate the prime rib. Overcooked bland chicken and they must have forgot the creole sauce, the scallops and shrimp on top were over cooked. And at the end it took 20 minutes to get the bill and after another 15 I went to the front to pay and they would not let me as I had to pay the waiter. And I could not as he could not be located. To be fair KEG your apps are good and your drinks are excellent. BUT as a place to go for a good experience and supper you suck suck suck suck and are not getting any more of my money this is your 4th chance and you screwed 3 of 4 visits. This is the St. John's outpost of the Keg, a chain of Canadian steakhouses. A few notches above Outback Steakhouse, don't expect any miracles coming out of the kitchen here. People flock to this place for a few reasons: (1) men love to ogle the gorgeous women who work here and drink here; (2) men and women alike love the quayside setting on St. John's harbour; and (3) locals think that homegrown restaurants of similar expense are too fancy and pretentious (they couldn't be more wrong). If I were you, I'd do my due diligence and find a great meal elsewhere, travelling to the Keg only for after work or for after dinner drinks. read more
