My wife and I were worried we wouldn't be able to get used to Corvallis. You see, we're both born and raised in a city that has McDonalds and Wendy's fast food restaurants on every corner. So when we got to Corvallis and realized it wasn't like that here, we were a bit skeptical. Once I introduced her to Baguette, though, she managed to get out a few words in-between bites: "We're gonna be all right." Lol. Though some may disagree with me, I believe this restaurant is the very literal definition of a "hole in the wall". When you approach it, you'll notice it's on the side of a building. Imagine a huge brick wall, two stories high. Now imagine this wall had a small door in the middle of it. That's the entrance to Baguette. And inside this quaint little restaurant, it's about the size of my garage - maybe even smaller. There are two tables inside that really dont seat any one who is of average size. When we went, it was 8pm on a Thurs night and it was near empty. We ordered a couple of the original "Baguette" sandwiches($4 each) and a Pate Chaud to go. For those of you not familiar with Vietnamese sandwiches, it's generaly filled with pickled radishes and carrots, cucumbers, cilantro, and jalapenos along with your choice of meats. The original sandwich includes some Viet ham, head cheese (which tastes just great, thanks), pate, and some mayonnaise mix. The bread we ordered was white - we passed on wheat this time - and was a bit different from what we're used to. The baguettes we usually get are flaky and a bit hard sometimes. This was soft, but not too soft. It still had a little hint of crispiness. The mayonnaise was awesome. It's gotta be a homemade mix - some egg yolk and possibly some spices. Downright delicious. That night, our sandwiches were made on the spot. Good sign. We waited about 7-8 minutes for our take out, which was fine. We were not disappointed when we got back to the hotel. The lady behind the counter (possibly the owner?) was very friendly and quick to make our sandwiches. It's not on campus and it doesn't deliver, but if you're jonesing for a good sandwich, it's worth the short drive or moderate walk. GO GET ONE NOW! read more

I'm Vietnamese and I've never encountered two banh mi places with the same bread. So the few complaints here on the authenticity of the bread seem unfounded. The bread here is more on the softer side, sure. But it still has the nice crusty outside indicative of a baguette for banh mi. The do chua (pickled carrots & daikon) is my favorite part of a banh mi. Here, it isn't how I would normally like it. I really can't put my finger on why: maybe it's the amount they put in (very little) or they way the carrots and daikon were cut (very thin) or maybe its in their ratio of pickling liquid. Either way, while it's still good I don't personally find it adds a bright crisp note that it should to my sandwich. I'm used to banh mi being $3-4 back in my hometown. However, the amount of protein they put in the sandwich really makes up for it! And no matter what your choice of protein, it'll definitely be packed full of flavor. If you can handle spice, I recommend requesting jalapenos for you sandwich! And if you happen to be new to the area (like me) there's a parking lot behind the building for the restaurants in the area. Overall great place that will definitely be a staple for me! read more

I ordered a sandwich the other day and man, I was a bit disappointed. [-] Let's see, where to start. (By the way, I don't remember what I ordered...), but I do remember my sandwich was soft. What? Soft bread? What happened to the nice, crunchy outside and soft middle that scraps the roof of your mouth? I mean I feel the pain after I devours it, but isn't that the point of bagettes? So my bread was soft, might as well order from Subway... To top things off, the spicy veggies freaken addition charge? What in this world coming to? Another essential part of these sandwiches are the spicy peppers, with that taken away, it's no better than a plain old sandwich. What a disappointment. [+] On the other hand, small, clean place and they offer steam buns! This is one and only place in Corvallis that has that kind of stuff. I do have to give them props for offering wheat buns rather that just white buns. Also, they will give you nickels for your parking meters while you dine or order your food. Another great place that picked one thing, and kills it! From the service to the last bite it was outstanding. The owners work the counter and register, they were super friendly. We hadn't been here before so they gave advice and it was right on. We had the Lemongrass Beef, Chicken, BBQ pork sandwiches. The Lemongrass Beef was really good. Lots of saucy flavor. What can I say -- other than love at first sight, that is. The moment I crossed through the solemn entryway I knew we were destined for a beautiful future. The sandwich I chose to dance with was the perfect blend between sweet and spicy; drippy but not too wet. Meat sandwiched between two buns of perfect thickness. I purposely skipped on a drink as to keep the flavor in my mouth as long as I could. This was 5 years ago due to circumstances beyond my control, but I think about he-- the restaurant every day. Love this little restaurant. I am not even a sandwich person but I LOVE Baguette. I usually get a #6 and add jalapeños. It's amazing. The curried tofu banh mi is to die for, and the women who I think is the owner (she's literally always there) is the kindest, sweetest soul I've ever met. I can't recommend this place enough for great banh mi made with the most amazing fresh bread! I also really appreciate the fact that she still is take-out only as of last week.
