Attempted to come here on a Sunday afternoon during very nice weather in Florida. Wanted to try this just because of its reputation as the oldest tiki bar in Florida... Walked in and ended up walking out almost immediately. Dark, dismal, felt dirty. Smelled of urine and feces upon entering. Two very elderly people sitting at the dark bar and that was it. I like the atmosphere of the place, the service was great, AND they were nice and knowledgeable. The drinks were absolutely great, no complaints here. With that being said, I have to mention the food. I can't let this slide. That had to be the worst food that I have ever had. Nothing was home made or let alone cooked. They gave us something similar to the lunch food that is given to kids at a public school (you really don't need to use your imagination for that, it's exactly what you may be thinking). Worst of all, I was upset that I payed for that (pre frozen microwave food). We ordered 8 tacos, I thought I was actually getting 8 ., what I received was (imagine this) 8 tostito's chips folded in half with "taco meat" inside. I COULD HOLD THEM ALL IN THE PALM OF MY HAND. Several people told me about the Mai Tais at Bahi Hut and they did not disappoint. We went on a Saturday night and the bartender Coree helped us find a seat at the bar. She was very pleasant and makes a delicious Mai Tai! The other drinks looked good too; the couple sitting next to us ordered something else (I can't remember) and raved about how good their drink was. I am a one-drink/night girl :-) A food truck came by around 7:30 (Coree told us about it) We were able to bring our order into the bar and enjoyed the tacos. It was a nice friendly group at the bar too. Will definitely be back to try the other drinks. read more

I have been waiting to make my review until i got my wedding photos back so now here i am! First of all THE STAFF !! From day one of discussing my after party and hotel stay for myself as well as our guests, they were the absolute best. So helpful, so friendly - and FUN. This was legitimately the most incredible time for us and they played such a big part in it. My first time going here in over 5 years. I hated it the first time because it was super smokey but now it's remodeled and non-smoking and really enjoyable. I had the Bahi Aloha to drink which was awesome. We munched on the crab Rangoon and chicken tenders, both pretty good and the dipping sauces were great. it was pretty busy at 5 on a week day and Amelia was the bar tender. I was lucky enough to try this place before moving, not! We came to Bahi right after work on a Monday and the mood was very calm, and not too smoky inside yet. I think that we paid $6.50 for a Mai Thai, even though it was happy hour, which does not include their specialty drinks that they are known for. The drink did not taste good, since it tasted of straight up alcohol. It did not mix well with my already existing heartburn from the night before and I am not going to drink something that tastes bad. Maybe I am not a fan of strong drinks. If I want to taste straight alcohol, I will go home and take shots of rum. I guess taste and enjoyment is more important to me than getting wasted at a shady place on Ho Row. Based on the yelp reviews (particularly the one about going here alone as a woman) I was apprehensive. But, I figured that at 7pm on a Thursday night was a safe time to visit. While in town for work, I was looking for a true a local bar and i found it. A dive bar right next to a small non-chain motel that is very unassuming from the outside. Once you're inside it's like you're being transported to a different era. A real tiki bar. I was served by the bartender Liz, who had a bar that was 80% full. She was laid back and talking to customers like they were old friends, which they may very well be. I asked for the most popular drink--the house special I guess and was served a very strong mai tai ($8). Tasty and strong. Very strong. I was ID'd heavily beforehand so to say. I was also promptly offered some pretzels. Really cool old school tiki bar vibe. No frills place but still really comfortable and enjoyable. I didn't feel unsafe at any point...but who knows what kind of atmosphere the place is come midnight. The signage on the bar advised customers that the place would became a non-smoking establishment in early 2018. Just a heads up. I will be back. read more

Stopped here because it was the oldest Tiki bar in Florida and the reviews were decent. They claimed to be a legit "tiki" bar, but In all honesty it was not good at all. Their Navy Grog might be the worst "tiki" drink I've ever had and was served in a nondescript rocks glass. It was some weird combination of orange juice and lime juice and no taste of rum. Ok, so first off, I want to give the Bahi 5 stars because it's so much what I wanted and needed. But I don't want to misinform the average wayward traveler, who might lean toward 3 or even 2 stars, so I settled on 4 stars. That's my disclaimer. The truth is, after a several years of trips to Sarasota I was dying for some deep, divey authenticity. The city and the strip mall and the tourist joints are fine, but where's the realness? That thing that feels like your somewhere instead of anywhere? For me, the Bahi Hut filled a huge void. The place isn't for everyone, but anyone can go there. It feels like the kind of joint Hunter Thompson would've made his way to back in the day, the kind of place you'd find him if he were still alive. This is Sarasota's OG tiki dive bar, still reminiscent of the original tiki movement back in the day. It's a bit old and musty, dusty, small and full of life! There's an element of unease when you first walk in, but it's smoky and fine once you settle in. The bar tenders have a Cocktail (the film) vibe, flipping bottles as they mix up their "famous" Mai Tai's (not a fan, personally) and Rum Runners (this is the drink, it's fantastic). Heavy rap music fills the small room, dark, mostly a horseshoe bar with a few small tables, and the atmosphere is both private and lively. It's fun, but personal, small groups of three or four and couples here and there talk and drink, hoot and holler, but not all at once and not all together. Something and nothing is about to happen all at once, and you don't really care which because you're in a time capsule, a hotel bar for a hotel that hasn't existed in years. The regulars eye everyone with comfortable suspicion, the tourists and new comers rely on the bartenders ease for how it all works. It's perfect. And then you walk outside, the tiki masks hang on the wall, the parking lot is dark, there's nothing and no one around and all the music and sound locks in behind the door and it's like nothing happened at all, like the place didn't even exist. This is the slice of Sarasota I didn't know existed and am glad to know it does. Post Script: Another disclaimer, I should mention we arrived late and drunk on a Friday night. After midnight, for sure. The Bahi opens at 4:30 and is open several days a week ... I suspect each point in the day and on different days of the week has its own personality, so come prepared for whatever, whenever and see for yourself. Best of luck. read more

This will probably be one of my favorite mid-century era tiki bars forever. I love how it keeps the old Florida charm alive even though skyscrapers keep going up nearby. It is such a hidden gem that you might accidentally drive past it more than once without realizing its right there! I've been on numerous occasions and have always had a really pleasant bartender. Never had a cocktail I didn't like there either. The art is true to era, and I love that every time I go, I notice another something cool on the walls. I must say I'm glad that it is now non-smoking inside. That was my only issue previously as the smoke bothers my eyes after a while. Overall it is very much worth a visit. I'm rating this on the atmosphere mainly. It's small. BUT. It feels special. We got carded at the door, which I liked. I felt a lot you free, lol. We sat at the bar and hubby had Food Truck stuff, we both had a drink. I chose the Mai Tai,(which I hear you are only allowed 2) because they are to be famous for it. Hubby got another kind of Mai Table, but can't recall the name. Mine was not for a wimpy kid! It was strong. Hubby's was $13 and not as strong as my $9. His had more flavor, but I didn't care for it (maybe guava). The music was awesome, one man band, kinda vintage looking guy in late 30's maybe. We had a great party for 74 people in the Tiki Hut patio. It is a great space for a large crowd and the staff is wonderful - very helpful and accommodating. I only wish they would install ceiling fans, this is Florida after all, and since it's outside in the heat, everyone was sweating bullets. read more

It has changed a lot. No smoking and miss the cranky old bartender who threw cheese sandwiches at you and made coma inducing Mai Tais. However, the drinks are still strong and a real effort has been made to keep the Bahi Hut around when so many SRQ iconic places are giving way to the bulldozers, especially on North Trail. They got a new sign. Its ok- wish it had been a little more vintage looking. The old one still stands and I hope it never goes down. I would personally fund relighting it if anyones reading this that can help with that. I want to give Bahi Hut 5 stars because I love it so but it has lost some of the dinginess and character it once had. read more

Great classic tiki bar. Ha ent visited in 10 years as I don't get to town often, but 3rd visit for me. Everything good you've read about this place is true. Drinks are strong, affordable. Atmosphere is great if you enjoy the retro lounge feel, which we do. Only wishes would be, expanded drink menu, open earlier by an hour, and if we could drop the smoking ban thing, or at least make a cooler tropical theme smoking area outside to honor guests who enjoy that too. Current smoking area is along a wall next to small parking lot. How about some tiki totems, some bamboo there? Anyway, great place. I'd visit often, just rarely in Sarasota. read more
