You can't go wrong with the massaman curry here. It's always creamy, full of flavor, and has a good ratio of protein, potatoes, and onions. The rice that comes with it is small compared to how much curry they give so I recommend ordering an extra side if you're splitting with someone. Their Thai tea is delicious. I'm not sure if it's a mix that they use, but I like that it's not overly sweet and actually tastes like tea. I only wish they would offer a larger size and alternative milk options (like coconut). Crab fried rice can be a hit or miss flavor wise, but when it's a hit, it SMACKS. The rice is never too wet or dry and the crab is generous. The menu doesn't list garlic as a component, but it definitely tasted garlicky. If you order takeout, I recommend ordering at least 20 minutes in advance. Also, if you're like me and not sure about what spice level you can handle then order mild and ask for chili sauce on the side. read more

They bring food out in TO GO boxes in To Go begs. Something different... I thought it was kind of cool and strange at same times... We ordered... 1. Veg rolls 1. Chicken Fried Rice 2. Pad Thai (veg) Veg rolls were deep fried and too oily They were hot (temperature wise) which is major plus. Both Pad Thai were too bland... no taste at all... Added soy sauce and chilly sauce - then they were OK. Chicken Fried Rice.... Dare I say, the best if not, one of the best friend Rice EVER... Amazing taste, perfectly cooked, super tasty, right about of Chicken to onion to rice ratio. It was so flavorful... From the fist bite to the last, I had smile ear to ear.... The enticing sweet-savoury fusion of their Pad Thai is something to write home about. The moment the fork met my mouth, my tastebuds were served with the immediate satisfaction of the salty, nutty but slightly sweet sauce. I enjoyed the warmth of the perfectly cooked shrimp, the crunchiness of the fresh bean sprouts and peanuts and, the underlying tang of lime and tamarind. I've been here twice now and the food has been delicious both times! They were super accommodating for my gluten allergy and their menu makes it very obvious to what can be and what can't be made gluten free. I got the pad see ew which can be hard to come by at normal Thai places. Just be sure to ask them to make it with gluten free soy sauce. The Tom yum soup is also a great option for something light and tasty. Service is quick and friendly. I prefer getting takeout because everything is already served in takeout containers and parking can be hard to come by. Definitely my favorite Thai spot in SD so far. read more

Friend recommended this place so thought I'd give it a try. The atmosphere is nice. There's a patio with string lights so it feels fun and chill. The menu is pretty basic and honestly, I feel this caters to people who don't usually eat Thai food. It seems like a more hipster Thai restaurant. You order at the counter and then find your own seating. They'll bring the food to you. I ordered pad kraw pao which they called bai grapow. It didn't taste right to me. It's supposed to be a spicy basil dish with ground chicken sometimes topped with a fried egg. I didn't taste any basil flavor at all. It was spicy and tasted mostly of soy sauce. I can make this better at home. We also ordered some sweet chili wings as an appetizer. These were pretty good. They were crunchy, sticky, and very flavorful...maybe a little too much. Found another Thai food place in Hillcrest! It was my first visit so I ordered my go to Thai food item - Pad See Ew with tofu. I always order the same Thai dish when I first visit a new Thai restaurant so I can compare them easily. I really liked their Pad See Ew with tofu. The sauce is slightly on the sweeter side. Not salty. I wanted medium spicy but it's more like a mild for me. They gave me hot chili oily on the side which was perfect withy pad see ew. The noodles were cooked well and separated. It was easy to call ahead and place the order then pick up when it's ready. They have few parking spots out front so it was very easy to pick up. Don't need to worry about parking at busy Hillcrest area. They have a large patio for outdoor seating and also indoor area. I will for sure visit again and try different item on the menu. read more

We are so glad we opted for Bahn Thai! The setting offers seating outside and their heaters kept us warm from the spring evening chill. The order area was clean and tidy, and they graciously cleaned and sterilized the table for us. When we disposed of our serving trays, plates and utensils in their recycle bin and waste, all the staff thanked us inside. I told them how delicious our meal was and thanked them back. We had a friend visiting and told them about how fabulous the food is here. Unfortunately all three dishes were disappointing. The Cho-Chee fish curry had fish which was thin, dry and overcooked. The Pad See Ew could have had more noodles. Also, the Eggplant Basil Stir Fry and the other two dishes were way too sweet. Hopefully this was just an off-night our meals were not up to their usual standards. I ordered the Yum Neua while my girlfriend had their pad see ew. We also split some chicken skewers. All items were very yummy. My steak salad was really good but one thing I wish I had asked for was medium rare or mediums steak as it came out pretty much fully cooked. There is no option for plated food, as all the food whether to go or not is served in plastic containers, with plastic utensils and in a plastic bag. Not only terribly unsustainable but it also cheapens the experience. COVID-19 takeout We have missed Bahn Thai so much. Online order for takeout is such a breeze! (pick up only @ Hillcrest) The website is clear that the wait is approximately 30 minutes. We were there early and checked in. Turns out it was ready at about 15-20 minutes. Score! Crab fried rice - no spicy: It didn't taste as good compared to the one on Park Blvd. It is our first time at the Hillcrest location, could use a little more wokness. However, my toddler enjoyed every bit of it. Lahb gai (chicken Larb) spicy level 2 and the additional sticky rice: rice powder is not visibly enough for my preference, but flavors are good. The sticky rice was a bit too dry. I am not sure if it is steamed with the right amount of water...The seasoning in the larb is delicious with such fresh ingredients. Tom Kha soup spicy level 1/mild: it is just the right amount of zing and could be a bit more creamy but I am completely happy with it. The tofu and mushroom are delicious in this broth. Garlic stir-fry with pork no spicy: it was lovely. It could use a little more wokness, tbh. My toddler thoroughly enjoyed it. Mango sticky rice: wow the mango was sooooo sweet, I normally liked a bit more tangy mango to complement the sweet and richness in the coconut sticky rice. It is delicious nonetheless. Bahn Thai is my number one favorite thai restaurant in SD, so of course naturally, I was extremely ecstatic to find out that this new location opened up! This new location is located in Hillcrest and is significantly larger than the original location in University Heights. The new one's decor is also a lot more modernized as well and I thought it was really clean, hip, and cute. I really dig the subtle orange tones of the place. Whoever interior-designed the new location did a great job! There's plenty of inside seating and there's also some outdoor patio seating, which was really nice since the original location has very limited seating area. Upon arrival, we were greeted by a really friendly and welcoming cashier, who happened to tell us that the menu is identical to that of the original location. What I liked more at this new location is that there's a huge lit up menu found above the cashier register, so it's a lot more transparent and easy for ordering. My friend and I ended up getting the beef pad see ew (***MUST GET!!), a chicken curry dish, the tom kha soup, & the mango sticky rice. I'm usually always a pad thai typa gal, but no lie, ever since I tried the beef pad see ew at Bahn Thai.. I've never gone back. It's by far the best pad see ew I've ever had. I would honestly eat this dish every day for the rest of my life, if I could. I've had the pad thai though many times and it's still great though, if you prefer that instead! The chicken curry with rice dish was delicious too & I usually don't get the curry dishes, but if you love curry, the curry here doesn't disappoint. We especially loved the tom kha soup a lot though! The creamy coconut flavor of the soup was perfect and I would highly recommend getting the soup alongside a noodles or rice dish. It provides a nice and creamy contrast to the main dishes. Lastly, I've had the mango sticky rice multiple times at Bahn Thai and it's a great finishing touch. It's not super sweet and it just tastes and feels comforting, if that makes sense. To put it simply, all of the food at Bahn Thai is freaking amazing. My friend who I brought for his first time even texted me the next day just to let me know that he thought the place was incredible & was still thinking about it. Also, they have merch here and from my last visit, I saw that they have shirts that straight up have a fried egg on it. I didn't think this restaurant could get any better, but it sure did. Now I know that Bahn Thai has so many rave reviews and it's about time that I legitimately add mine to the list. I'd eaten at the Park Blvd location a lot of times and always enjoyed my meals there: only problem is usually parking and also lack of seats. And PRESTO! This location solves no the of the ose aforementioned tidbits in splendid fashion for me! Not only is the square footage a massive increase, but the back patio as well as front seating area are a very welcome addition. Parking is not too convenient I don't think unfortunately, but I remedy that by biking there so it didn't affect me directly. And now onto the most important thing about Bahn Thai: the food. I have tried many of their dishes in the past(usually their noodle dishes) and this time opted for something new for me: their Panang Curry. It was absolutely delicious and the portion was impression as well...as I was starving! I ordered mine hot, and it was the perfect amount of spice to my liking, and I even added some chili oil myself to give it a slight kick. I ordered it with brown rice and it was nice and fluffy. The complimentary chilled water was a great touch to help cool down my palette haha. The service was pleasant and the cleanliness was superb I'll be going back there quite often and I recommend Bahn Thai big time! Had a less than good experience here. It's not cold and rainy often in San Diego, but the day I took an out of town guest for lunch it was. Walked up to the counter, ordered payed and left a tip. I didn't receive a table number so a server would know where to bring us our order. I asked and she said I will see you in front, which is an open air covered patio. I said we prefer to sit inside. Her reply was no, our only seating is outside. ( rainy and 55). Needless to say we reluctantly sat in the cold and rain. We should have been told our only seating is outside and considering the weather, I just wanted to tell you. When the server brought our meal it was packed as a take out order in a plastic bag and in plastic containers... soups and entrees. I asked if we could have plates and not to eat out if to go containers and we wanted to share. She handed me a Dixie paper plate and said that's all we have. It was embarrassing with a guest to experience this. We were so cold and bummed about eating our soup with our entrees getting cold sitting on the table. Absolutely ridiculous. Neither of us could enjoy anything and felt like it was not worth $50 for lunch for 2 sitting outside in the cold rain. Won't return and wouldn't recommend to friends. read more

So excited that Bahn Thai has expanded to a second location. I always enjoyed their park Blvd location so I was excited one a little closer to me opened up. This location has more seating too, both indoor and outdoor. The outdoor patios have heated lamps. It looks like they put a lot of money into this location as all the finishing touches inside the restaurant are cute & trendy. We enjoyed sitting out on the patio on 5th ave. The food itself is just as good as their original location. Fresh, flavorful and totally hit the spot. Normally we have leftover to take home , as the portions are pretty big. This time however, we ate it ALL. We must have been really hungry lol. We got the eggplant stir fry, and pad see ew. Super good and highly recommend. I have been a fan of Bahn Thai since moving to San Diego three years ago. The first location is small in terms of seating but the food has always been worth the wait for a seat. Now they have opened a new location in Hillcrest and I am extremely impressed. They have ample seating inside and a lovely patio area in the back. The patio area is natural and comfortable. The staff and everyone I encountered at the Hillcrest location provided excellent service. The prices are extremely reasonable for the quality of food they provide. The drunken noodles were delicious and I always recommend this dish to people when they ask for Thai suggestions. The Phanaeng Curry was gorgeous i.e. it was creamy in taste and the paste they make is authentic and traditional. This is a beautiful location and the only one I've been to! I know they have another location but I have not visited it. Finding parking was a little tricky, but it wasn't too time consuming. I came with a party of 6 for Valentine's Day and we were welcomed by everyone we crossed paths with. There is seating inside and outside and we were able to get a seat inside. If you've never been here before and have never had Thai food, this is the perfect place to come to. You order inside with someone at the register and they prepare it for you as you're finding your seat, getting utensils, and settling in. Your food will be ready at the pick up area and you can pick it up from there and take it back to your seat. Because it was Valentine's Day, there was a special (photo included). The chicken satay was flavorful and savory. The rangoons were so crispy and soft in the center -- perfection. The egg rolls were nicely fried and very light. I ordered the Bai Grapow (hot), Drunken Noodles (medium), Massaman Curry (medium), and Thai Fried Rice (medium). Everything was absolutely delicious. They have gluten free options as well as an option to make things gluten free and vegan friendly upon request. The only caution I have is the Bai Grapow ordered in hot was pretty spicy and although I loved the heat and could tolerate it, it was not friendly to the rest of the group.
