Came in for a comfort fix and Corner Cafe delivered exactly what a neighborhood Chinese spot should. I ordered the wonton soup and the mooshoo pork, and both came out in portions that could feed a small committee. The wonton soup was huge -- a full, steaming bowl with soft wontons and broth that stayed warm and steady the whole way through. The carrots were cut into giant, almost cartoonish chunks, but honestly it added to the charm. Nothing fancy, just satisfying. The mooshoo pork was the standout. Instead of the usual soft, blended filling, this one had real texture. Crisp cabbage, bright carrots, bean sprouts that still had snap -- the veggies actually had life. The pork was tender and mild, and the whole mix wrapped up beautifully in the pancakes with a swipe of hoisin. Corner Cafe isn't trying to reinvent anything. I had seen a previous Yelp review saying ordering the kung pao chicken extra spicy was their favorite order, so I did that. It wasn't spicy at all to me. I have a high spice tolerance but was really looking for a kick! After 6 years of living in San Diego, we really couldn't find a go-to Chinese takeout place. Corner Cafe caught my eye as I was walking down the street and didn't even realize they have Chinese food until I saw the photos of the dishes outside. We decided to order delivery that same night and were pleasantly impressed with the orange chicken and honey walnut shrimp. Both servings at less than $20 are plenty and can be shared for two. I was in the area and came here for lunch craving Chinese food. This was my first time. I ordered the beef chow fun wet style $17 and the orange chicken lunch special $10. The flavor of the chow fun was good. It wasn't very wet as you can tell it wasn't saucy. The beef tasted good and was not chewy, instead very tender. My critique for this dish is that some of the green onions used were older so they were dry and you couldn't chew them. I wouldn't say it's worth the price. The portion size for the orange chicken lunch special was great. The chicken was nice and crispy and the orange chicken sauce wasn't too sweet. The rice was done well and the eggroll was alright. I did not take this order to go, but wasn't met with any service either besides serving the dishes and I paid and tipped upfront. I didn't get water the time I was there. They may have been understaffed as the lady in the front kept going to the back. When I asked for my to go boxes, I also asked for water. While I was drinking it, I noticed that there was food in the cup. There were two pieces of green onion, and something else that was the size of my pinky nail. It definitely wasn't small and it definitely grossed me out. When I let the lady know, she laughed and asked if I wanted another one. Perfect location for me to get a bite to eat while the rest of my friends hung out at the bar next door. They weren't too interested in eating at the moment but I was hungry. Nonetheless, my bowl of shrimp noodle soup was brought over to my table steaming hot. It took me awhile to start eating as it was way too hot. I had to take lots of sips of soup until I was able to bite into one shrimp. The entire bowl arrived fresh and yummy, portioning was more than expected but the taste was missing a little something. The soup wasn't awful, it was just missing that Chinese soup taste. I'm not a fan of spicy foods but in the case is the soup, it definitely needed something - a kick. I didn't bother complaining. Perhaps, I should have added some soy sauce or hot sauce but wasn't feeling it. I had finished my soup in no time. It definitely hit the spot. Corner Cafe did its job. Staff was not overly attentive but enough to get what I needed (ie fork). She was polite and mild mannered. From the looks of the way business ran, it was an over-the-counter order type of place. The cafe itself is very quaint with some fun decor and lighting. The service is quite friendly. Friendly enough and relatively efficient (I think they just scooped some chicken and rice in a bowl, added the sauce and called it a day) I ordered the General Tao chicken with some white rice and a 7-up. 18 bucks for this. Food portion is good. The chicken was a little soggy but the flavor was great though I should have asked for more spice (it says spicy but...it's really milder than mild). Overall, this place is not terrible but you could honestly get similar quality at Panda Express and pay less and get more. Corner Cafe (which is not on a corner) took over the space of the former Poke Go at this location in Hillcrest. Instead of poke bowls, the menu is now made up of Americanized Chinese food. Boba tea drinks were also on the menu with many variations available. The dining space was limited to about five or six tables inside so take-out is probably the better option. I first ordered a mango green tea with boba pearls. It was probably one of the smaller boba teas I have received for the price. The entree I selected was the beef chow fun. It was a decent noodle dish with nice sized slices of beef. Not too much oil was used which is the way I like how this item is prepared. The service was pleasant which was a positive aspect. For this neighborhood area, there really isn't another option for Chinese cuisine so Corner Cafe fills that gap. read more

I tried this place for the first time today and was honestly disappointed. I ordered orange chicken with white rice and cream cheese ragoons. The service was friendly but the food was a let down and in my opinion not worth the price. My food was $25 in total but the orange chicken (though covered in sauce) had virtually no flavor? The sauce was watery and even with siracha it was still plain. The rice was hot but kinda over cooked and mushy? And the cream cheese ragoons were good and crispy so that was nice! The restaurant itself seemed a bit disorganized with only one person working and running around and a chalk board with faded lunch menu options. Maybe, if we had only had their food once, maybe the star rating would be higher. Alas, we chose this restaurant three times over the course of a few weeks (when the craving hits...!) and the enjoyment we experienced on the first visit steadily declined to the point that this is now a 2 star review. So, to start with, they're still take-out only, which is odd, given the bar next door is always full to capacity. The door is blocked by one of their high-top tables, and is typically manned by an employee. All of our orders were placed online, and the estimated ready time never varied, no matter what we got, or when we placed the order. That's a slight issue, given their pick-up time ranges from 15 - 35 minutes. We tried to time it right, but had to wait 20 minutes outside the first time, about 5 the second, and on the third, everything was being packed up when I approached the door. On our first visit, we went with the Hot & Sour soup ($8.99), the BBQ Pork Fried Rice ($15.49) and Kung Pao Chicken ($14.49). The Kung Pao came with the tiniest order of white rice on the side (deceptively small, at least; they packed that container to the brim!) This order had so much food, my husband was able to save leftovers for lunch the next day. Of the three items, the BBQ Pork Fried Rice was my favorite. There was nothing exciting about it, but the pork had great flavor. The Kung Pao was more onions than chicken, and the chicken's texture was a bit...odd. The Hot & Sour soup was so spicy I couldn't get more than two spoonful's into my face! That was super disappointing because I was the one who wanted the soup. My husband ended up taking that for lunch the next day, and said that whatever chili they had in there became angrier soaking overnight. The second visit, we ordered the BBQ Pork Chow Fun ($14.99) and the Honey Walnut Shrimp ($16.99). The order again came with the tiny side of white rice. We didn't have leftovers here, which was fine. The honey walnut shrimp was good - crispy and just a little mayonnaise-y, made with large and plump shrimp. The noodles were just okay; they were so stuck together by the time we got home that we had to cut them with a knife to serve them up. Our third and final visit saw us order the Orange Chicken ($14.49) and the Garlic Pepper Shrimp ($16.49) - and yes, the teeny tiny box of rice came with the order. So here's the thing with this one: we ordered - and paid for - the shrimp, but got the Garlic Pepper Wings, instead. It's a $6 difference; not a bank-breaker by any means, but come ON. Turns out that worked in our benefit, because the wings were superb. Had I paid just for them, I would've been happy. The wings are giant, juicy and perfectly crispy. Definitely a winner. The orange chicken was kind of ho-hum; not as crispy as I'd have liked, with a slight off-putting flavor that I couldn't place and didn't care to chase. So, given all this and the fact that they're fairly expensive for what you get, I think we're done. As I so often say, there are so many options for us to explore in our neighborhood, it doesn't make sense to waste our money on restaurants we don't enjoy. read more

I placed an order online. I ordered the rice and potstickers. The potstickers were nicely, steamed then lightly fried and the seasoning inside the potsticker with the meat was very flavorful. They do serve you an abundance of rice within one order. I had enough for two grown adults, lol. Could not eat it all in one setting. Okay yall, we finally found it... THE best Chinese in San Diego! Atleast from what I've tried... and I've tried ALOT. This place was super fresh, good quality meats, and super tasty sauces. And you know it says a lot when it was that good and I got it delivered via Uber eats! It was still steaming when I opened the containers! The only thing I will say that isn't super awesome about this place is that they were a little stingy on the walnut shrimp portion size. But I get it.. it's shrimp! The Corner Cafe is quite a find for someone like me who was in the mood for the lost art of Moo Shu. Well I will look no more because their food hit every note perfectly. The interesting combination of mushrooms, carrots, onion, a other julienne cut vegetables were prepped and cooked to perfection leaving a pleasing subtle crunch. Not over-cooked. I asked for the shrimp moo shu and there must have been eight or more in a single serving, which is enough to share. Where have I been? Or should I say how dare they hide the true meaning of what they make behind the humble name of this cafe?! The owner [co-owner?] was really pleasant to talk to.
