Living two doors down, we find ourselves at Baked By Yael quite a bit for their delicious coffee and breakfast bagel sandwiches. The people who work there are super nice, and a great example of that is when I went by today. I had to take our new Great Dane and couldn't find anywhere to tie her up- I peeped inside and asked if the guy working would be kind enough to get me a coffee while I stood outside the door with my dog. He did it with a smile and took my credit card from me and went inside to swipe it as well. Super nice. Great service, great coffee, great food- highly recommend. read more

The young lady who took my order could not have been nicer or more helpful. The shop was clean and organized, and the menu was easy to navigate. However, I ordered the avocado bagel and learned the shop was out of hummus. I asked to substitute an egg and was pointed to the healthy start, which has an egg and spinach, along with the avocado I hoped for. GREAT! Regrettably, the shop was also out of spinach. So my breakfast was avocado, egg and tomato. Less than hoped but not horrible. However, the bagel was too tough to bite easily. The avocado and egg had zero flavor. My family and I stopped here after visiting the zoo. All three of us are vegetarians and we have a 9 year old who will never eat anything. Well she ordered an avocado bagel and ate all of it! I have to say the shop is the cutest and had a great vibe to it. The bagels were fresh and just the perfect amount of chewy. My husband and I also got to try the vegan cookies and cream cake pops-omg amazing. I really appreciated all the options they had. You really never appreciate the nut free/vegetarian options you are given until you need it! Thankfully we found this place that gave us a healthier and very reasonably priced meal. 3 people for $30 plus drinks? What could make the perfect ending to visiting all the amazing animals at the zoo? Top it off with an amazing cake pop! The store itself is super cute! Lovely colors, literally feels like a candy house. At first I hesitated when I learned the price of a single cake pop was almost $3...but after taking a bite of the oreo cake pop, I knew every cent spent on it was absolutely worth it. The taste was out of this world, perfect melt-in-your mouth chocolatey-oreo taste! Shared it with my colleagues, one of whom's cake pop fell on the ground...and she picked it up and scraped off the side that had touched the ground, applied the 5 second rule and ate it...that's how good the cake pops are...did I mention she's a nurse! read more

I stumbled into baked by yael at the Alexandria Saturday morning market just before the Scottish Walk Parade. I told her I had a gluten sensitivity and lo and behold, she had a few GF goodies!!! I got a cookie bar and black and white cookie and they were PHENOMENAL!!!!!! Hands down the best gluten free anything I've ever tasted!!! I don't eat a lot of cookies, pastries, etc but now I know where to go when the craving hits!!!!!!! Since I'm frequently at the national zoo taking pics of thing, think I'll just have to make a point to stumble in and see what else she's got behind the counter!!!! read more

I've got a bad sweet tooth and love cupcakes - so when I saw a cake pop bakery was opening near where I live, I was eager to check this place out when it opened. I went in on a Saturday afternoon and purchased a few different flavors to try: Lemon, Birthday Cake, Chocolate and Red Velvet. The store is modern and fresh, but honestly doesn't have much of an atmosphere. The cashier was very friendly, but it still felt a bit sterile - maybe because it is new? The cake pops are pretty and very consistent looking which I know is tough. I don't care for lemon but got it for my husband. If I get something sweet it is going have some element of chocolate in it. He didn't care for it. He is not a huge sweets person, but it was not his favorite. The chocolate was not terribly sweet and a bit too dense for my liking. The birthday cake and red velvet were both good - like taking a bite and wanting to devour the whole thing good. We both agreed that the red velvet one was the clear winner. I would also get the birthday cake one again. The candy coating was very good. However, for $3, I want something that is more than 2 bites. I do, I am sorry - I just don't think it's worth the price. I know cake pops take great skill, I have a friend who opened her own bake shop in NY and I really do get it. However, I can't imagine regularly spending that kind of money for a cake lollipop. I would rather spend a little more and get a full cupcake. I do have a preference for light and airy cake, and cake pops are not light and airy so perhaps that is just me. I think she will do a fine business with the zoo across the street, I mean cake pops are the perfect treat for kids! However, I do wonder about repeat business from the people living in the neighborhood outside of events or special occasions. In the display case there were a few other baked treats and I believe some bagels. It will be interesting to see if this selection expands or if she decides to stock other treats consistently to balance out what is on offer. read more

The pops are good but probably over-priced. Went by the store today and purchased one of each flavor they had available. Our favorite was the cookies and cream, which is in line with several other reviews. Their lemon and raspberry flavors also stood out against the birthday cake and chocolate options. Here's a list of somewhat connected thoughts on their products and store. I really only share this because I want to see this store succeed. I think I'm overly influenced by shark tank at the moment: 1) After sharing a few pops with my girlfriend, it seemed like each pop started to blend together. Visually they only differ in color, and the textures are very similar from pop to pop. More could be done to make each pop a unique experience, especially when they charge 3 dollars for two bites. For example, why not add some confetti candy to the birthday pop to give it some added texture? Maybe a small dollop of cream cheese icing on the top of the red velvet pop? Thinking about making a mint chocolate flavor pop? - make it, and add a spring of mint to the top. 2) You feel a bit lost entering the store. There's no easily found list of products and you'll just have to guess the price on many things. They sell coffee, but I don't know if I can get anything more than drip. They sell day old bagels (which are good), but these are stashed on the side of the counter, again with no obvious price or label. With this approach, it seems like their are mostly focused on catering, which is funky considering their prime location. 3) Why not add outdoor seating? People like to sit for a bit after walking through the Zoo (look at the hoards of people lounging in front of their frozen yogurt neighbor) . Add some bistro style seating outside with some shade, along with some iced drinks (coffee and tea) and people will love it while the weather stays nice. Plus, a crowd of people will raise the curiosity of passers by. As of now, the store seems dead in comparison to the others that face the Zoo. 4) We've had their bagels in the past, which are very good. A big step up over firehook, which is located a couple blocks north. The obvious complaint is that they just give you the bagel in a bag with cream cheese and a crappy knife. It'd be much better if they at least offered to cut it in half and toast it. The bagels are good enough that the store could a morning destination (a time when I imagine the pops aren't flying off the shelves), particularly if they added outdoor seating and more drink options. I suppose the problem this is that they bill themselves as a cake poppery. Overall, good, but pricey, products and a lack of attention to their storefront. read more

I should apologize to the staff for asking them to repeat all the flavors several times to ensure that I remembered which flavors were which when I shared them with my coworkers. I never shared the cake pops with my coworkers...I've been eating cake pops for breakfast and dinner the past several days.... My favorite flavors, in order are: 1) Cookies and Cream 2) Lemon 3) Chocolate 4) Red Velvet 5) Birthday Cake. I honestly regret selecting three of each flavor, because I really would have loved a full basket of the Cookies and Cream flavor. How I wish I had a tub full of the Cookies and Cream filling to eat by the spoonful... The cake pops may seem expensive for the size, but I really think looks are deceiving. The pops look tiny, but you don't need more than one to feel satisfied. I admittedly have had three in one sitting, but I was in a sugar coma for the rest of the evening. One cake pop on it's own doesn't taste too sweet, but the sugar rush will likely begin after the second pop. read more

Next time I'm in the area I will try some of their other baked goods, but both the regular and specialty cakepops have not impressed me at all. Owner is incredibly offputting and pretty much has completely unsold me on this place. Let me tell you what happened. (and yes, this is all about customer service...) I contacted the bakery on Monday to inquire about purchasing 2 dozen cake pops for a small birthday celebration I am hosting for my 4 year old at his preschool. The school policy is that any outside food offered to the children must come with a list of ingredients which the school then posts in the classroom a few days in advance of the event for parent to review and provide written consent allowing for their child to partake. It is a standard school policy in this day and age and so I'm wondering why this woman was so paranoid and resistant when I explained the policy and asked if she could just simply provide a listing of the ingredients in her vanilla cake pops. I originally explained this to a very pleasant employee who advised that someone would call me back to help me with obtaining that info. I got a call back that night from Yael, who interrogated me as if i was some secret cake pop chef looking to steal a recipe. Truth is, my son just loves cake pops and I thought it would be a fun for him to share his love of them with friends at school. After insisting that her pops were nut-free (because the only possible food allergy is related to nuts), she requested contacts at my son's school. I should have noted that as a red flag. To add insult to injury, she advised that she would be happy to speak with the school's staff to discuss further. When I explained to her that they would still need the ingredients in writing, her suggestion was to copy her in an email to the school's administration. At that point, I felt like it was probably more a case of paranoia than an issue with sharing the ingredients. Still, I really don't know why I stuck with this effort for so long. I was pretty much offended by that point. I sent the school's administration a note and copied her. I expressed that I'd hoped the direct connect would push things along more quickly so that parents would have enough advance notice. In my note, I provided the school with a link to her "about our products" page in case of the very off-chance that the school would find it sufficient. (they didn't) Yael immediately followed up with a very gracious note introducing herself and, with a surprising level of ease, shared that she suspected the school would need more, could they call her and explain the policy and she'd be happy to follow up in writing with whatever was needed. (Nice that she would acknowledge all that with the school and not me (the person initiating the transaction with her business) BUT, alas.) She got a pretty quick response from the school providing a very clear statement re: the policy. So here I'm thinking, good, NOW she can send this list and we can move this forward. What comes next? Not a single word from her. Not even a gracious note letting me know "so sorry, I just can't accommodate this request, but thank you for your wanting to support my business." Nothing! Time fully wasted. If you have a pre or primary school event, don't even bother with this place. It's not at all kid-friendly in that way. And a STRONG WORD OF CAUTION--do not share personal contacts with this business. I did receive a final response from Yael which was not to me (the actual customer), but to the staff at my son's school about my angry yelp rating. When I asked her not to contact me or my son's school again, she responded that she would, but only if I remove my yelp review. Wow. read more

You can say many things about Baked by Yael. But I think the best will be cute and different. And also offer gluten free options which is a nice thing that I respect. First, the staff is very, and I mean very patient. They didn't make a face or complained when we took the time to ask questions (And we had many). Also the young lady who helped us looked like she enjoy and love here work and the place. Such a refreshing attitude from all the places where the staff let you feel as if you are bothering them. I am a photographer and I often include her cake pops as a bonus with my mini-sessions for kids. And we had her cake pops at our baby shower - every one raved. But in my heart, I'll always adore her rugelach the most. So perfectly soft and flakey, cinnamony (or chocolatey if that's your preference) and melt-in-your-mouth delicious. I sample rugelach nearly everywhere it's offered, and hers is still the best I've ever tasted. read more

I've placed several orders with Baked by Yael over the last several months. I'm a big fan of the plain bagels and order them by the dozen. I follow Yael's advice and store them in a sealed bag in my freezer. When I want one, I pop it in the oven for 15 mins at 350 degrees and they turn out great...especially with some Nutella! I'm never going back to supermarket bagels as long as I can buy Yael's. I have also ordered the oatmeal raisin cookies and the black & white cookies. Both were tasty. read more

BBY is in prime location as it is the first thing you see as you walk out of the exit of the zoo, and after our power walk, something sweet was JUST what we needed. I tried the Rugelach and a Lemon Cake Pop. Both were YUMMY. The Rugelach was by suggestion of the young lady behind the counter. She said it was one of her favorite things. If I could describe it, I would say that it tasted like the inside of a cinnamon roll. MMmmmmmMMmm. I ordered an anniversary basket for my boyfriend after we had to cancel our plans for the weekend because of a change in his marine training schedule. I woke up with the news from my friend that the basket wasn't there. I called the baked by Yael and they said they delivered to the front desk as I advised. The building office had locked it up in an office that doesn't open on Sundays. I was really upset but Baked by Yael not only called twice to check for any updates on the basket but when they found out I wouldn't be able to get to it they offered to send another one. I stopped in here after seeing this cute shop walking past on my way to restaurants in Cleveland Park from Wardman Park Marriott. I had no idea if they were open on Sunday Morning at 8:30, but they were! Excellent!! I had ozone cinnamon Rugalach, which was the freshest and best I've ever had. I got a FREE Coffee for checking in on Yelp! Then I bought a bag of soft day old bagels. Total was 7 and change. The day old bagels feel a little firm and somewhat spongy. But for my purposes, they'll do the trick. The staff was extremely pleasant and accommodating. In fact I hadn't noticed the free coffee coupon till after I purchased my items. This is my first time being the first to review a place! yay! Yael's cake pops: best morsel of dough and white chocolate covering that has ever graced my mouth. The dough is super moist, rich, but not overpowering. The white chocolate cover is the perfect thickness-not too thin (where's the frosting!), not to thick (where's the cake!). I've had the cookies 'n cream, white cake, and strawberry flavors. All were top notch. I've also sampled Yael's black and white cookie. In the inevitable quest to find that perfect black and white cookie, Yael's iteration rises well above the rest. The chocolate is fudgy, the vanilla is more icing-like. The cake is moist. Perfect balance of frosting and cookie. I highly recommend seeking out Baked by Yael for your sweet tooth needs. What's so bad about keeping a dozen cake pops in your house for the daily sweet treat? The icing was yummy and in my opinion a great icing-to-cake ratio. My only quibble is with the price: $3.25 for a small cake pop. However I would guess rent is expensive for a store at this location and making a cake pop may also be labor-intensive. So I didn't feel it was a rip-off for this tasty treat. read more

This place is absolute garbage. My girlfriend and I came by today and ordered three bagels (one with cream cheese, two bagel with lox sandwiches). All three orders were completely incorrect. The bagels are so stale that you can't even bite into them. The lox definitely tastes like it is about to turn (coming from a former chef, strong ammonia smell is always a good clue). There is about a teaspoon of cream cheese on the bagel pictured and none of the toppings at all. I called my girlfriend to see how her bagel was and she said her order and the one she got for her friend were wrong as well and the bagels were hard as rocks. This isn't my first time coming here, nor my first bad experience with these bagels. Maybe I'm just spoiled by growing up in an area of the country where bagels are made the best (NJ/NY), but this place should stick to the sweets they do and nix the savory part of their menu.
