(4.5 stars) We had missed getting an actual slice of pie on Pi Day, so what better way to make up for it than partaking in a Pie Flight the day after? Yes, you read that right. Baked offers three-slice flights, which, given the size of said slices, should definitely not be attempted alone. While this curio would be enough to get plenty of people in the door, Baked has a lot more going for it. Though the selection varies from day to day, we found plenty of tantalizing options: fruit pies, chocolate pies, custard, pecan, a savory quiche, etc. The inside of the shop is homey and exudes retro charm, and the proprietors are welcoming. My wife and I opted for the Irish Cream Brownie, Whiskey Silk, and Blackberry Biscuit for our flight. The pies were very sweet, but they were tasty. While the former two were both boozy chocolatey cold pies, they presented different flavors and textures. The blackberry biscuit was good (and probably would have been even better had we gone ala mode), but we should have requested it heated up. At $15, the pie flight was a good deal given the size of the slices. That said, whole pies go for $38, which is more than many would pay. Specialty pie shops are something of a rarity, and it would be tragic if Baked's pies were merely pedestrian. Fortunately, they more than clear that bar. read more

I arrived on a Saturday at 5:17 PM, walked in through an unlocked door, and the employee flatly told me, "we're closed." I asked, "Aren't your opening hours until 6 PM, or did I misread the website?" She responded: "I don't check the website much, but in the winter we close at 5 PM." The issue isn't closing early once -- it's having inconsistent hours across multiple platforms and then showing zero concern for the customer inconvenience (no apology, no attempt to help, no sign or clear communication). Doesn't get any better than this!! The pie is outstanding, and the pie flights are such a fun idea. It's wonderful to get to try multiple flavors at a reasonable price (especially since it's so tough to pick!) The staff is so welcoming and warm, and the environment is beautifully decorated. We also love that they have games to play while you sit and eat, which helps my two young kids stay occupied while we nom on pie. While in Asheville for the day and evening, my husband wanted to check out the Baked Pie Company. As soon as we entered the restaurant, we were greeted warmly. I instantly loved the ambience of this place, especially the black and white TV playing in the corner. We went with the flight to try multiple options along with salted caramel ice cream. There were so many pie options! After lots of deliberation, we chose the coconut cream, hot cocoa, and gingerbread cheesecake. All were delicious, but the coconut cream was our favorite. We were in town for a week and over that week my husband and I shared three pie flights, a whopping 9 pieces of pie. Please don't judge. They say a pie flight comes with three "slivers" but their slivers are the size of what I consider a normal piece of pie. They must give you 1/4 pie if you order a full slice. It's wild. Overall they were amazing. Here are my impressions: The blueberry limoncello was really nice, light and creamy, in the ballpark flavor wise of a key lime pie with a great balance of sweet and tart. The blueberry compote on top and the graham cracker crust complemented the filling very well. Absolutely would order again. The Chocolate cloud pie which reminded me of what is usually called a chocolate satin pie. Light filling that is very chocolatey and sweet but with a silky texture rather than a heavier pudding texture like a chocolate cream pie would have. The chocolate crust suits it perfectly. I'd find it hard to eat a whole slice at once but it was delicious. The peanut butter chess is also surprisingly well balanced, very strong peanut butter flavor so I didn't really feel the "chess" part until a few bites in. That one has a pastry pie crust that is fine but the filling is what wins, both peanut buttery and custardy. The apple cranberry pie was just perfect, like limoncello blueberry had what I considered perfect blend of sweet and tart with a great Dutch crumb topping. I probably wouldn't have distinguished cranberry if I didn't know it was there, it tastes like apple mostly, but I think they use a sweeter apple variety so the tartness comes from the cranberry. Honey pecan was fine, but not very different from any other pecan pie I ever had and the pecans were a bit soft rather than snappy & crisp like I like it. Pecan pie is so easy to make at home I probably would skip it here, though they said it was a best seller so YMMV. The strawberry sour cream was just ok when it had been sitting out, after refrigerating it my husband said he liked it better but I didn't have a second bite of that one. I'd have to try it fresh again to give it a fair shake perhaps, it did sit for a day before we got to it (but most of the other pies were still amazing even if they sat a bit). The Amish apple was just as good as the apple cranberry but a little sweeter and less tart. Also with a dutch crumb topping. I didn't have them both at the same time to compare side by side, but they were very similar. The lemon blueberry streudel was like a lemon bar with blueberry and lighter crumb topping, it was so good, it might have even jumped to the 1st place spot because I'm a sucker for both blueberry and lemon bars. It was too rich to eat all in one serving which is not a bad thing. Even more rich was the fudge which really did have the texture of a ginormous piece of fudge. It was delicious but there is no way I could eat more than a couple bites at one time. My personal ranking (from favorite to least): Lemon blueberry streusel Apple Cranberry / Amish Apple tie Blueberry limoncello Chocolate cloud Peanut butter chess Chocolate chip fudge ____ everything above this line was REALLY REALLY GOOD Honey Pecan Strawberry Sour Cream They discount the flight if you take it to go w/o ice cream, we had no freezer so did it that way and each flight was around 12 or 13 I think. I couldn't decide whether Raspberry Rhubarb Frangipane or Brown Sugar Peach Crumb was my favorite. Honey Pecan was also very good, but it was more of a classic pie. The only thing I found weird is that we were charged for a flight plus one additional sliver. A flight is supposed to come with 3 slivers and a scoop of ice cream, but we weren't given any ice cream. When I asked about it, I was told we could pay more for ice cream if we wanted to. They rotate their flavors daily, so I'd definitely come back to try more flavors. While the idea of a pie flight sounds awfully appealing, I must say that it is something you'd really want to eat as a team effort rather than individually. I came on an empty stomach, and while the first slice was delicious, the second started to become less appealing, and the third was a slog to get through. But it was good pie. Many flavors were available, and I was surprised how many people were willing to drop a bunch of money for whole pies as part of the holiday rush. It was crowded in there. My flavors of choice were a vegan chocolate, a walnut fudge, and a peppermint cream. If anything, I'd say the vegan chocolate was actually the best; it certainly was just as creamy as any dairy or egg based pie I've ever had. The peppermint cream on the other hand was a bit too fluffy and sweet and needed some more flavor contrast. As pie places go, this one seemed pretty well-prepared to have options for the vegan and GF customer (and they had a keto pie too which sounds even more like a contradiction). If I were back on my own I would stick to a single slice, but I would enjoy it. read more

Based on availability that day you can get 3 slices (don't be fooled by the name sliver, they are full slices) plus a scoop of either vanilla or salted caramel all for just around $15. We went at 3 pm or so, so their pie options were a little more limited than had we gone earlier, but we were still able to get a few different options. The honey pecan was INCREDIBLE. Plenty of parking and seating. I didn't have it this trip, but I'm curious to try their savory quiche (and they even have lunch specials of quiche and a slice of pie!). Both slices were overly sugary sweet, not a lot of definition for either flavor. Tasted like mass produced pie from a mix not something super tasty from an authentic bakery. Basically it's the Dominos of pies. Would willingly pay the higher price if the pies had been good. Had two slices and two coffees for about $25. Been there. Done that. Won't go back. Wafting pie and berry smells amidst a backdrop of cute antique collectibles and cozy seats? Um sign me up. You'd never think this place is right off the highway. Adorable little shop in a strip mall set up that is meticulously detailed with the perfect vintage, shabby chic decor in every corner. I typically do a fruit, creamy, and/or chocolatey pie. I've not had a pie I don't like. All are rich in their own way. They also sell entire pies. They're pricey but worth it --especially if you're looking for something for the holidays (but do this early as a lot of people do this). Often times pies are rotating so you may find different options each time you visit. I was told to try the pecan pie when I first visited and it was by far my favorite. So far I've tried the following: Blackberry Brownie Fudge Chocolate Chess Honey Pecan Mixed Berry Pumpkin Cream Cheese Chocolate Cloud Hazelnut Cream Raspberry Cheesecake Double-crust cheesecake I've only scratched the surface! They have all been excellent, but Chocolate Cloud, Hazelnut Cream, and Chocolate Chess are some of the standouts. Their Honey Pecan is also the best pecan pie I've ever had. They also offer pie flights! For $12, you get three choices and receive about 2/3 of a slice of each. For the money, it works out to about the same for two full slices at $6 each and 2/3 of a slice is still plenty to whet your sweet tooth. It's a great way to sample their large selection, especially their specialty and seasonal pies. We bought two flights: pumpkin cheesecake, apple crumb, coconut cream, cloud, cranberry cheesecake, and I cannot remember what the third one was that my friend purchased. Sorry. The cloud has a pretzel crust with a texture and tartness similar to key lime. The coconut cream was by far my favorite and of course I gobbled it down with immense enthusiasm!
