Our friends that vacation in Asheville every summer told us about the Underground Bakery. Unfortunately we always get there very late and we buy the delicious Bretzels that they make. Today we just got the plain. The other day we got the cheese and jalapeño. I also had a delicious cappuccino at their adjoining coffee shop. This is a wonderful little bakery. They have fresh loafs of sourdough, semolina, and other breads. I also recommend their pretzels and croissants. Parking can be an issue, and usually have to use the business across the street. They give their bread away to a local shelter around lunch time so definitely want to hit them up early! read more

Everything here is highest quality. Friendly folks and incredibly good pastry and breads.

We woke up early to make sure we were there right when they opened on a Saturday at 9 am. Looks like 50 other people had the same idea with the line down the street! We were focused on getting a Bronut the only make on Saturdays! Every time we come, they sell out! It is magical! Well, we got one!!! Plus, there are many other things to try. When they brought out still warm baguette- we snatched one. Saw the sourdough, so of course we had them slice for us to enjoy for sandwiches this week. The croissants- warning- you think you just want to take a small bite - NOPE, you will eat them over the kitchen sink, and just like that, it's gone. The Pretzels are always a good treat for later. Tried them all - all amazing! I'm super happy to see all the love for this local bakery. Way too many items for two people, but I'm not mad about it. Do not miss it!!! Wonderful old school bake shop in the heart of Hendersonville. Amazing fare lovingly prepared and presented. Good variety that changes daily. Pricing is good for quality. Good artesian coffee and tea in an attached shop that is perfect for a window seat cup on a cold wet morning. Staff is knowledgeable and very friendly. Warning! The Pumpkin Chocolate sourdough bread is a new one to try as I'm a sourdough addict! It was a beautiful fall day in the Hendersonville farmers market downtown. Used to go almost every Saturday. For coffee and focaccia and will picked up some cookies and muffins for boyfriend, which he loves. I really liked going there. Until one day. The creamers in the coffee bar were empty, one of the owners (lady) was behind the counter (no one in line, unusual) and i told her a couple of times and she just looked me in the eye, and kept moving things around on the display window. I was in the neighborhood and came to this bakery because of the Yelp reviews, especially the reviewer who didn't like that this establishment enforces masks. I went out of my way because they enforce masks. Good on you. I bought a few items to try and to share, and I even left a tip. Friendly customer service, baguette is delicious. Ya'll have heard of the Antichrist.... Well, I'm the anti-perky Yelp girl. You will never catch me peppering my reviews with phrases like "OMG, the food was amazeballs!" or "Everything was sooooooooooo good!!!! " Ever. It takes a lot for me to love a place unabashedly, but when I do, I'm all in. As with here. I can't remember the last time I was this enchanted by a bakeshop's ability to churn out goods with such a perfect combination of heart and technical precision: So yeah... We tried a bunch of things, including Focaccia Pizza, Pretzels, and Croissants, plus a Molasses Cookie and a Sticky Bun. If I had to choose a favorite, and please trust me when I say this feels very much like the proverbial dilemma of being forced to pick your most beloved child, I'd go with the Croissants. I got one filled with Ham, Cheese, & Jalapeno, and it was a thing of flaky, buttery beauty. Loved that the Jalapeno had a real kick too. Am not playin' when I say there are some NYC bakeshops that could learn a thing or two from this spot. This is the only treats place we visited twice during a 10-day trip to Asheville and thereabouts. And if I'd had my way, we would have stopped in more than that. But anyway, during our second visit, hubby spotted a promising looking coffee shop next door, and went inside to 'investigate.' Apparently, he began chatting with random customers while there, and it turns out, both the coffee shop and Underground are owned by the same people; people who apparently hail from Napa. Now, I don't know about you, but when hear that word, things like 'crazy posh food & wine', and 'French Laundry' leap to mind. So while this is purely conjecture, maybe the Napa background helps explain the technical precision that I noted earlier. But the heart? That sh*t can't be learned, and it's here. In every lovingly crafted bite. This l'il bakeshop deserves all the positive Yelp accolades. Consider my mind officially blown to see there have been just 18 reviews since 2013. Not a fan of the mask sign on the door (please lets not add to the hysteria) when the county does not require one... But more importantly, the staff is wonderful, the spinach and artichoke pretzel was amazing -- light and fluffy, yet crisp on the outside... Love absolutely love this place! I do not live in Hendersonville but I will and do drive way out of my way to get their pretzels. Because they are amazing and I crave them on the regular. The jalapeno cheddar pretzel is my dream pretzel. But the artichoke parmesan gets an honorable mention. Really everything there is a hundred percent delicious. A day trip to Hendersonville requires exploring a locally owned food stop. We got a brownie and the magic bar for my boys - Wow! I don't think any brownie has ever compared to those. The boys devoured them. I also took home 3 cranberry walnut scones and a massive oat muffin. Our total came to about $15. I'm not too sure about the scones though... I expect them to be crumbly and kinda hard, but these were more like a scone shaped muffin. Good flavor but the texture threw me off. Maybe that's how it's done there, maybe it was an off batch....? The oat muffin was really good. My husband and I were rationing ourselves by taking slivers of it throughout the day lol I really need to get down there on a Saturday for the Christmas bread. read more

Awesome food, awesome prices. Seriously, half the price of Starbucks food and 10x the quality and flavor. Coffee is great and roasted right (coming from an ex barista and lifetime coffee snob). I wish they were open more so I could go more frequently but I also understand the need to be closed. I will be returning next week for more coffee cake and coffee! I love this bakery!! Yummy Christmas bread with nuts and cranberries year round, and really delicious whole grain breads not to mention a good crunchy bread with a soft center!! The muffins, croissants and cake are so delicious we end up going multiple times when we visit Hendersonville,NC. The star this time was the focaccia pizza. We live in Asheville and just recently discovered this amazing little bakery on our way to a festival in downtown Hendersonville . Everything looked so good it was hard to make a decision. My husband and I chose the ham and swiss croissant and the chocolate croissant for breakfast. We also purchased their rosemary focaccia bread and the rustic sourdough to take home. Great bread. My own experience (unfortunately) is that the appear to not care a bit about serving customers. Not open many days and very limited hours. You're unlikely to be able to purchase bread if you walk in. zyou have to order ahead of time online and rven that access is severely limited. I love the bread but the experience has been such a turnoff I wonder if I'll return. read more

We stopped in here on a visit to Hendersonville prior to a girlfriend's wedding nearby... WOW! The focaccia bread pizza is amazing... you MUST go! My friends had gone the day before and brought us some coconut macaroons and a brownie... all were delightful! Had a rockin' Ghost Pepper pretzel from the Brezel "BZL" Bus that was at State of Origin! You take a bite with some whole grain mustard on it - you feel the burn - and then you crave more. We were excited to try a local bakery so since this one got good reviews, we tried it. No one treated us when we came in, and the person at the counter was just the opposite of friendly. Maybe she's having a bad morning. We ordered our croissants and left - no thank you... nothing. Plus the food is so-so. We've had better from a grocery store...super disappointed. read more
