I can't imagine anybody saying anything negative about this place. The staff is amazingly friendly and helpful. They have a huge selection of cakes, pies, pastries, donuts, and cookies. It's on such a cute little main street area, everything is so charming. I had the best glazed doughnut I've ever had in my entire life, and trust me I've eaten a lot of them. I must say for as long as the line was out the door. I was hoping it was going to be a little better. The service was absolutely great when it came to ordering, and there were about five people taking orders at a time. This is your small hometown, bakery with low prices in an abundance of choices. For me the things that I bought I spent about $18 and I got so many things. Nothing was over the top very basic flavors. I think that next time I will definitely get the cake and see how that is and maybe even the bread. The smell was so good inside and it seems like a very popular place to go with a lot of options. There is no seating inside, which is fine because you can go outside and sit at the tables. I will be back to try other things, but I can't put this at the top of my list. read more

We were walking around downtown and popped in even though we weren't particularly hungry. We had read about this shop in the magazine at our inn. We couldn't resist a little gnome cookie that we saw so we bought it and ate it outside on a bench. This seems to be a local institution and very popular with the locals. Historic Bakery in downtown Hendersonville. We make it a point to stop by for some old favorites and try something new (to us) every time we are back in town. The apple fritters and apple turnovers are consistently on our list. This time I picked up a few dozen of the sour cream (strawberry & apricot) pastries. They're small, like one or two bites each. They're little fluffy soft pastry pockets filled with fruit jammy filling. Almost like little homemade pop tart bites. They were still great after 2-3 days. (Likely longer but they're usually gone pretty quickly.) There is almost always a line, but they move efficiently with multiple staff behind the counter. My family and I stopped in here after brunch to get some sweet treats to take back home with us. All of the staff were super friendly and very sweet with letting us take our time browsing and helping out with recommendations. My sister got a few pastries to try out (cream puff, eclair, and then a black and white cookie that was almost like cake base with the black and white icing on top). I got one each of the key lime, old fashioned sugar, old fashioned chocolate chip, chocolate chunk, strawberries and cream, blueberries and cream, oatmeal raisin, and snickerdoodle cookies to try. They were all your classic cookie except the key lime and strawberry/blueberry cookies. The key lime was like a slightly tart tea cookie with some powdered sugar, I liked it a lot. The fruit cookies were almost like a cake texture and didn't have as much flavor in them as I was hoping for, but they were still very good. Overall a very cute little bakery with soooo many different treat options that are fresh, tasty, and reasonably priced. There is definitely something for everyone in here! read more

We couldn't stop in Hendersonville without stopping by this well lauded bakery. We arrived around 11am and all the glazed donuts were gone, but that didn't deter me. I purchased a blackberry turnover for breakfast tomorrow, and a very large bear claw for my tea upon returning to my sister's place. My sister bought some cookies which we enjoyed after lunch in town. I had a third of my bear claw (with tea) as soon as I got in the door. It is so fresh. The pastries we purchased, almond paste filled strudel, were doughy and heavy, not light, flakey pastry layers. The filling was hugely excessive. I've gone to McFarland's for years, enjoyed some of the pastries, but have noticed within the last year that the prices have increased considerably. The quality of some of the products there are worth it, but there are some pastries that are definitely not worth the price. Recently, I bought two bear claws and a cream horn and my bill was $20 with change... That's a little bit expensive. I did buy the bear clause for two friends that really enjoyed them immensely so it was worth that but I think I will think twice about purchasing some of their items because of the cost unfortunately. The service was supreme and gave a tip to the girl who helped me out. read more

We have never been disappointed with McFarlands, however, Wednesday my husband and I stopped in for our favorite donut a white holland. Service was fabulous, we were the only ones in the bakery, and the smell is always amazing! The donuts were of average size but the filling, the delicious cream filling was minimal at best. I thought I just got a dud, but my husband agreed saying his donut also had very little cream filling. We were both disappointed. In the past the first bit to the last was oozing with cream filling. I maybe had three bites with filling, mainly a cake donut. My daughter shared with us ownership has changed recently and other customers have also been disappointed with cakes and other baked goods. I am hopeful the new owners will read this and return to the previous ways. We will give them another try because everyone deserves a second chance. read more

A rather simple bakery with loaded pastry display cases featuring cakes, cookies, breakfast pastries, and fresh bread. There were several people working the counter eager to help everyone - lots of smiles even though it was busy. Our favorites were the turnovers. Big, packed with fruit filling, and flaky - we wished we had more than two. The sourdough bread was so fresh and soft - very, very tasty as well. We had some kind of strawberry cookie that was good too. Everything featuring fruit was delicious and well-baked. We had a few things with chocolate that were slightly less successful. The eclairs were extra loaded with pastry creme. I wish they had packed them better in the box, or used a larger box, as our pastries smashed each other up a bit by the time we got home. The price for these baked goods was at a premium, but we splurged while on vacation and don't regret it. read more

It was sad to see the original family owners sell this amazing bakery to new owners that didn't care to severely alter the quality and quantity to make more profit. All cinnamon rolls, Danishes, etc are 30%-50% smaller. Many of their baked goods way are over baked and dry. I took two small bites out of this wee, tiny overpriced cinnamon roll and threw the entire bag (5) additional in the rubbish bin. They had over baked the rolls to the point they were nearly burned then placed a scant amount of frosting over it to hide the error. Please see photos! They do not lie. I went in to get a coconut pie, 3/29/25, they didn't have any. I was so bummed, because I was leaving Sunday to head back to Fla and wanted to take one to my son who had been pet sitting for me. A sweet woman came around the counter and said I can make you one. It won't have the meringue, I can't make the meringue today, but I will top it with whip cream and toasted coconut. She made a beautiful pie, it was very good, my son was surprised and so happy. She went above and beyond for the customer. So very nice, thank you sweet lady, thank you McFarlands! read more

Holy cow. This is an incredible bakery and it was all we could do to avoid buying one of everything. As it was, we bought several somethings and ended up eating baked goods for days. Where to start.... We were visiting friends in the area and they had bought us some apple fritters for breakfast.. they were delicious after heating them up in the microwave for about 18 seconds. I was so impressed, that I was going to go back and pick up a dozen or 2... this way I could freeze most and enjoy the wonderful flavor over the next couple of months .... Well when we finally got back ( after lunch) there were absolutely no apple fritters left... we asked if they were making anymore.. I mean they are a bakery after all.... Well sad to say the response I received is "we are out and not making anymore " After hearing this response... I just walked out, even though I had also planned on buying other types of pastries. So I will warn you now, get there as early as you can to ensure you will get what you want. If not you will either have to settle for less... I think the next time we are up this way I will call ahead to make sure I actually get what I want. read more

Was in cookie mode and McFarlan was conveniently located on the main street (literally Main St), so this was perfect after lunch. The line extended outside the front door let me know I was at the right place. Pies, cakes, cookies, donuts... they have your sweet tooth ranges covered. I got a chocolate chunk cookie and a strawberry muffin. Both tasted fresh and REAL. haha. Not overly sweet and the flavors were subtle. Overall solid desserts. Not mind blowing but solid treats.
