For those of us that have been around Texas and love a Kolache this is as close as I can get. The sausage roll was on point. Donuts are sweet, like rot your teeth out your skull sweet. Craving for Krispy Kreme or Dunkin donuts? Baker's dozen in my opinion is a step above both especially if donuts are bought in the morning. Convenient location just right outside Fry Gate. People are always friendly with a smile. The closing time of 6pm on weekends is a bit early. When I saw the reviews for this shop I knew I had to stop here before we left the area and I am so glad I did. I was greeted by the owner, Jeanette who is so friendly. they have a Yelp sign on the front door and when I told her I found her on Yelp it brought a big smile to her face. I had to get the "Baker's Dozen" and six of the custard filled which are my favorite. I had to stop a block away and eat one of them because the aroma from the box overwhelmed me. Perfect, quaint, and great location. The coffee is GOOD! A lot of places have started using the machines and pre-processed coffee for cappuccinos (which they do have also) but here you can opt to get a great tasting cup of drip coffee, and enjoy it with their light and fluffy delicious donuts. Every time I come in here, the overwhelming smell of cleaning products hits me first and foremost. Could just be personal preference for that smell to be off putting when picking out food though. The doughnuts here aren't full. It's like they aren't given the proper amount of time to rise so they're small, sometimes uneven and doesn't have that good bite in regards to texture. If jelly filled is your favorite like me, you will get a full bite with no jelly and then one bite with all of the jelly, again a problem with being uneven and not executed properly. Why I give it even 2 stars is because there are tables to sit and enjoy your mediocre doughnuts at. I had conversations with some of the older patrons on multiple occasions and that was nice to just sit and talk like the old days. Very impressive bakery. I've been to voodoo donuts and shops all over big cities, and this place might actually be my favorite. The donuts are crispy and fried perfectly, incredibly light and airy, and not overly sweet. The yeasted donuts are small but perfect, and you don't feel gross after eating a whole donut here. Be prepared if you order a large cup of coffee to pay $2.89 and don't miss the sign on the counter that says "No more free coffee refill". I can accept rising costs of materials drives prices up....however, on our last (play on words) visit, we ordered 3 lg coffees, 1 med coffee, 2 breakfast sandwiches, 1 donut and our bill was $27.90. Oh wait, I forgot to include that the newest charge they have come up with, is to charge 54 cents for each little container of creamer for your $2.89 cup of coffee! As stated, our last visit will be our LAST visit to support this local business. Because we are both retired, we spend our entire life traveling! It's the most wonderful way to live and you find absolutely fabulous "hidden gems". Baker's Dozen is one of the best "hidden gems" we have found. Ron's favorite food is donuts! So, he makes a point to try every donut shop we pass and Baker's Dozen has THE BEST glazed donuts we've ever sampled!! It was the end of the day, so they weren't still warm, but they were AHHHHHHHMAZING!!! Light, fluffy, with just the right amount of glaze...not toooo sweet, but just right! As the only donut shop in town, there really are not many other choices besides grocery store bakeries for the American style donut. Prices are a bit high for individual donuts and for coffee; the donuts are what they are, which are a tasty, fried, sweet, portion of sugared dough and the coffee is of the moderately flavorful donut shop variety. Baker's Dozen has potential, however, inside, although clean, it needs cheery people and some atmosphere. I see they have a TV, however it is typically not on, and at the very least they need to have music playing to overcome the echoing eeriness of the store. There is a classic barstool dining bar inside, which is requisite of any proper donut shop, that is screaming to be packed, elbow-to-elbow with patrons; however, without ambient noise (music, TV, conversation, pots and pans banging in the back room) and friendly employees with smiling faces, it creates a hushed and solemn awkwardness that makes one not want to stay for coffee and donuts. In addition, although the service is prompt, it is marked with such efficiency that it lacks any personal touch or friendliness; quick service is great but can't we have fast and friendly service? When you want to get in and out quickly, and you are on the "West End" of town, wanting a sweet treat or needing to take a box of donuts to the work, The Baker's Dozen will suffice. Nevertheless, sadly, when a glazed, raised, sticky-sweet morsel of gluten crosses my mind I find myself considering other places in town; I at least want a smile with my guilty pleasure.
