Terrible service and treated poorly by a hostess. I'm a nurse practitioner and work and live in the city. I rode my E Bike here with my Fiancé on7/3/23 and arrived around 2200. My Fiancé asked if we could be seated outside and the Hostess was extremely UNPLEASANT, Unprofessional, and RUDE in demeanor while waving her hand around. We were told there is no server working outside, however people were seated outside and being served and there were at least five open tables! I told my Fiancé let's go somewhere else and also immediately called and spoke with the manger. I told her what happened and she told me the hostess should not have said that and if I wanted to come back we could be seated outside and she would give us a gift certificate, however I turned that down and stated I only want the hostess reprimanded so no one else has to deal with this type of treatment. read more

It's fantastic to see so many new places popping up in Detroit. Each time I go back to the downtown area there are new places to visit. This was my first time at Bakersfield and it did not disappoint. The food is excellent and the service is friendly and professional. The interior of the place is really quite beautiful. I'm sure if you visit in the warmer months they make use of the windowed garage doors that open up to Woodward. They serve up the tacos on a raised platter which is quite appealing. Let me start by saying, serving margaritas this good so close to my apartment should be criminal. Bakersfield was a perfect dinner spot for my friend and I. From the apps to the drinks to the tacos, everything was absolutely on point. The chips and queso is more than generous (you know that thing when you run out of chips but half your queso is still sitting there? Yeah that won't happen here!) The pineapple margarita was so refreshing and that perfect balance of "I can't taste the alcohol even!" while sitting and "WOW I'm feeling a little buzzed" once standing. I committed a criminal offense and *dropped my taco* and they made me a new one at no charge. Total sweethearts. Can't wait to be back in their outdoor seating section soon. I managed to find a corner seat at the bar, and there are places to stand and wait with your drink right by the bar. Nice. The drinks are awesome. Perfectly balanced, sweet and spicy and not short on the tequila. I had their margarita and whiskey sour. I loved both, but the boozy cherries on the sour are particularly yummy. We were seated right on time, and the service was super fast. We started with the queso dip which has chorizo on it - yum! Fresh, melty, spicy goodness. I had the pork tostada and it was so yummy. Finally had a chance to try it and though I liked it enough to come back, I feel like it tries to do what Imperial is doing in Ferndale, but just doesn't do it as well. Ambiance: cool decor, the bar is beautiful, and I really liked how many seats they have around the bar. Food: the chips and queso were delicious, but too small for the price. I also had the short rib and carnitas tacos -- the meats were yummy, but the salsas that came with the tacos were flavorless and they don't really offer table salsas to add to your food. That was a bit disappointing as I truly believe that any self-respecting taco joint should have great salsas. Drinks: I only had the Up in Smoke, which is a delicious mezcal cocktail that I have no complaints about. Been a couple of times and I've really enjoyed both visits! The first time I got several tacos and thought they were pretty tasty (al pastor with the pineapple and pickled onion being a highlight) but the next visit I got the short rib tostadas and WOAH. Those were AMAZING. Delicious short rib with a fried egg, black beans, hot sauce, queso fresco, shredded romaine, and cilantro buttermilk dressing all stacked together into one tasty plate of goodness. Chips, salsa and guac are also really great. The guac is very chunky, with huge pieces of avocado. If you like your guac smoother with other additions you might not be super into their style but I liked it. The location and building itself is fantastic. They have huge windows that open up to overlook Woodward and allow in lots of fresh air when it's nice outside. We came for lunch on one of the most beautiful days we've had so far and loved getting the fresh air while being protected from the shade of the roof. As someone that burns easily, it was the perfect blend of outdoors and indoors. If you want full sun, hit the patio outside. It's finally the time to enjoy it! To round things out--drinks are great (the pineapple margarita being a real highlight) they also have several non-alcoholic options as well like a delicious looking lemonade. We came here as part of our ladies night out before trap karaoke. We put our name on the list for a table and sat at the bar to wait. As we waited we had some drinks and ended up ordering. I let them know to take our name off the list we'd just stay at the bar. It was Friday night, and even though it was rather crowded our food and drinks were served quickly. They make their tortillas in house etc. the food is pretty pricey.... $4 per taco... Yes in deed the tortillas is house made! But I personally not a fan of it. Too thick for my liking and not as flexible as the typical tortillas you're used too. They do white corn tortillas by the way. I love corn tortillas. Everyone got their own thing so we didn't sample much. Queso dip with additional toppings is a must get! The tacos were good. I appreciate the slaw that's on them, it's refreshing. TODAY, November 6, 2018: I will not return to Bakersfield in any rush. I went last Tuesday, "Taco Tuesday" and had a poor experience with our waitress, Paige, and another employee. Allegedly the restaurant stopped serving the medley of three (3) taco sauces in squeeze bottle six months ago, although read above, I took my out of town friends there in July of 2018. First, our waitress Paige, was not attentive and two other people also supplemented her waiting us. She never brought us water or offered (I had to ask another man). When I asked another man (not our waitress) to being the taco sauces to our table, he brought two (2) and they were oddly enough in bowls. I found this odd, as it's hard to apply sauces in a bowl to the tacos and with no serving spoons. Fast forward, the bill comes and my friend has been charged for SALSA - $6.00, that's $3.00/bowl for the taco sauces I asked for. I informed Paige that were never asked for SALSA, but the taco sauces. We were THEN informed that they did away with the squeeze bottles six months ago (lie) because of varying health and preservations reasons, YET, none of this was disclosed to us before they decided to charge us for the sauces. Paige got an attitude and stormed away from our table and sent to man who brought the sauces/ "salsa" to our table. I told him he needs to inform us of this alleged change with taco sauces before just sending us bowls of sauce to the table. This all could have been avoided if my server or this other employee shared their policy change with sauces prior to us ordering. What he did say was that he could bring ramekins of sauce out next time. Well that's what he should have brought to our table instead of taking it upon himself to bring bowls and charge my friend. The fee was removed but it was poor service and communication on Bakersfield's part. I come to a restaurant for a pleasant dining experience, not to be given bad service and apiss poor back end explanation of their "policy change". 3/3/2020 I went back solo on a taco Tuesday and sat at the bar. I have not been here in almost two years since my previous bad experience and I will say that I had a good customer experience this evening. There were some menu updated and additions. I also noticed that the menu now states tacos sauces "available per request" which this was a nice update from my last visit. I ate my fav shrimp taco and tried the new to me pollo diablo taco too- equally flavorful and tasty. I topped it off with a Mezcal margarita. This was my first time visiting Bakersfield and I was impressed. My friend suggested we try them after a cocktail tasting at the Detroit Historic Museum on Friday night. We had all "tasted" at least 10 cocktails so we were ready to eat. We started with the trio (chips, guac, rojo and verde salsas), and the short rib queso. You can tell the chips are freshly made because they come out warm with the perfect amount of salt. The dips were delicious, the guac mixed with the verde sauce was my favorite. I ordered Baja shrimp taco, fish taco and hongos (portobello mushroom). The shrimp was my favorite and the hongos was surprisingly flavorful. All of the tacos are the size of street tacos and cost about $4 each. I also got a pineapple margarita which was delicious. I will be back the next time I'm in the area. read more

It was good, but a bit too spicy for me and I wouldn't get it again. The short rib was tender and I highly recommend trying it. There were a variety of menu items to pick and choose from, so perfect for group dining. They have authentic street tacos, tostadas, tortas, and ensaladas. I would recommend picking something from each category to take a bite and share. We starter off with some chips/salsa, which were great, even the refill on chips was complementary. So disappointed! We thought the food seemed overpriced (we are from Mexican town) but we ordered a $40 dollar delivery meal because the pictures looked so good. We got 3 tacos, short ribs queso, and taquitos. The pictures made the $5 tacos seem reasonable, large, and filling. In reality, they were just a tiny scrap of meat on a tortilla. Everything was dry. The $12.50 short rib queso was actually laughable. Maybe a quarter of a cup barely covering the bottom of the dish, and disgusting. The taquitos at 7/11 would be better than these $12.50 dry sad sticks. We have eaten all over Detroit and this is honestly THE WORST FOOD we have ever had. Overall score 3.5 I like Bakersfield, I really do. Call me spoiled for living in South Florida my whole life and then moving to Dallas at one point where there are tons of Tex Mex, Mexican, Latin, Fusion foods. I'm more accustomed to a different kind of taste for these types of fare. This place is awesome though when it comes to fusion, the atmosphere, the crowd and layout. The cocktails are great, the best part about the menu is the guacamole. I have yet to find a place here in the metro Detroit area that sells chips and guacamole like Bakersfield. I usually am not very impressed with tacos at restaurants, but I must say the variety and flavors that Bakersfield offers is phenomenal. I highly recommend you get the chips and salsa to start with. The salsa has a very nice smoky flavor, and it's like nothing I've ever tried. I would also recommend the shrimp tacos. These are bursting with flavor and overall they're so delicious.
