Stumbled across this place after leaving another restaurant. My husband and I wanted to drink more and decided to stop here. We noticed the patio outside and the open windows that were welcoming. We did not have anymore room to eat but the taco selection was impressive and might come back for that. We are snobs when it comes to tacos. Lol The waiter was super nice and friendly. We ended ordering a pitcher of cucumber margarita, which is a seasonal margarita. The drink was very refreshing and on average you get 6 glasses out of a whole pitcher. In my book it is winning especially when you have a large group of friends who love margaritas. I would definitely come back to this place to try there food and maybe other drinks on the menu. My best friend and I decided to have a Detroit Sunday Funday on 11/25/18. We rarely see each other since I live in NC, and we wanted to have a delicious lunch and catch up. Based on the excellent Yelp reviews, we chose Bakersfield. The decor is modern and upscale, the chips, chunky guacamole and salsas are all amazing, the tacos are made with fresh tortillas, and the ingredients are very fresh and everything was seasoned perfectly. The margaritas are terrible. The one I had contained pure sour mix, and there was maybe a drop of tequila in it. Very disappointing. The service was also extremely disappointing. Our waitress was the rudest waitress we have ever experienced in our lives. We literally thought she hated us. She acted like she was doing us a favor by taking our order!! We had a few questions about the menu and she was super annoyed! She barely spoke to us, never asked how our food was, and made our afternoon very awkward. I wish we spoke to a manager. Let me start by saying, serving margaritas this good so close to my apartment should be criminal. Bakersfield was a perfect dinner spot for my friend and I. From the apps to the drinks to the tacos, everything was absolutely on point. The chips and queso is more than generous (you know that thing when you run out of chips but half your queso is still sitting there? Yeah that won't happen here!) The pineapple margarita was so refreshing and that perfect balance of "I can't taste the alcohol even!" while sitting and "WOW I'm feeling a little buzzed" once standing. Finally had a chance to try it and though I liked it enough to come back, I feel like it tries to do what Imperial is doing in Ferndale, but just doesn't do it as well. Ambiance: cool decor, the bar is beautiful, and I really liked how many seats they have around the bar. Food: the chips and queso were delicious, but too small for the price. I also had the short rib and carnitas tacos -- the meats were yummy, but the salsas that came with the tacos were flavorless and they don't really offer table salsas to add to your food. That was a bit disappointing as I truly believe that any self-respecting taco joint should have great salsas. Drinks: I only had the Up in Smoke, which is a delicious mezcal cocktail that I have no complaints about. Been a couple of times and I've really enjoyed both visits! The first time I got several tacos and thought they were pretty tasty (al pastor with the pineapple and pickled onion being a highlight) but the next visit I got the short rib tostadas and WOAH. Those were AMAZING. Delicious short rib with a fried egg, black beans, hot sauce, queso fresco, shredded romaine, and cilantro buttermilk dressing all stacked together into one tasty plate of goodness. Chips, salsa and guac are also really great. The guac is very chunky, with huge pieces of avocado. If you like your guac smoother with other additions you might not be super into their style but I liked it. The location and building itself is fantastic. They have huge windows that open up to overlook Woodward and allow in lots of fresh air when it's nice outside. We came for lunch on one of the most beautiful days we've had so far and loved getting the fresh air while being protected from the shade of the roof. As someone that burns easily, it was the perfect blend of outdoors and indoors. If you want full sun, hit the patio outside. It's finally the time to enjoy it! To round things out--drinks are great (the pineapple margarita being a real highlight) they also have several non-alcoholic options as well like a delicious looking lemonade. Went in to eat before the MCR concert and there were 6 of us and we were seated immediately! Our server was great! She was a tentative and super friendly! I forgot her name but the was the red hair girl with doc martins and bell bottom jeans! The salsa was really good and the tacos we got were amazing! I think we got one of everything at least! Another great 1st! What can I say...this place was a pleasant surprise! The atmosphere was energetic, the food and drinks were excellent, and sitting at the bar was a treat. We came here as part of our ladies night out before trap karaoke. We put our name on the list for a table and sat at the bar to wait. As we waited we had some drinks and ended up ordering. I let them know to take our name off the list we'd just stay at the bar. It was Friday night, and even though it was rather crowded our food and drinks were served quickly. We had margaritas which were outstanding! We also ordered the loaded queso, chips and salsa, some tacos and a tostada. EVERYTHING was good, but my favorite is the shrimp taco! The first thing that came into mind from this restaurants name was... IMPERIAL? Bakersfield?! Like the Bakersfield hot dog... from IMPERIAL?! I'm dramatic. I know. Other than the name, the food also looked similar to imperials. I've been eyeing this place for several months now. Finally being in the area again and with a few fellas, I thought we would try it since it was walking distance from where we were. Coming here, I didn't really investigate the menu and reviews here so I was coming in half blind. Most seatings seems like benches, bar stools, and a booth one side with additional bar stools on the other side of the table. Waitress was very informative with the things they served here. Since it all being our first time here, she did a break down of everything. Even serving count! That felt kind of luxurious for me. She mentioned how guac is made fresh every two hours. They make their tortillas in house etc. the food is pretty pricey.... $4 per taco... Yes in deed the tortillas is house made! But I personally not a fan of it. Too thick for my liking and not as flexible as the typical tortillas you're used too. They do white corn tortillas by the way. I love corn tortillas. Everyone got their own thing so we didn't sample much. Queso dip with additional toppings is a must get! The tacos were good. I appreciate the slaw that's on them, it's refreshing. I've eaten here several times and brought many of my friends. Today my friends are all visiting from out of town and they enjoyed the experience. Everyone especially enjoyed the Baja Shrimp, Al Pastor and fish tacos. The guacamole and queso are always great staples to order as appetizers. This was my first time ordering the Short Rib Tostadas. I highly recommend this entree. Taco Tuesday is also a plus - 1/2 off all tacos. Note: the above message was a review I wrote in JULY 2018 and I thought that it posted. TODAY, November 6, 2018: I will not return to Bakersfield in any rush. I went last Tuesday, "Taco Tuesday" and had a poor experience with our waitress, Paige, and another employee. Allegedly the restaurant stopped serving the medley of three (3) taco sauces in squeeze bottle six months ago, although read above, I took my out of town friends there in July of 2018. First, our waitress Paige, was not attentive and two other people also supplemented her waiting us. She never brought us water or offered (I had to ask another man). When I asked another man (not our waitress) to being the taco sauces to our table, he brought two (2) and they were oddly enough in bowls. I found this odd, as it's hard to apply sauces in a bowl to the tacos and with no serving spoons. Fast forward, the bill comes and my friend has been charged for SALSA - $6.00, that's $3.00/bowl for the taco sauces I asked for. I informed Paige that were never asked for SALSA, but the taco sauces. We were THEN informed that they did away with the squeeze bottles six months ago (lie) because of varying health and preservations reasons, YET, none of this was disclosed to us before they decided to charge us for the sauces. Paige got an attitude and stormed away from our table and sent to man who brought the sauces/ "salsa" to our table. I told him he needs to inform us of this alleged change with taco sauces before just sending us bowls of sauce to the table. This all could have been avoided if my server or this other employee shared their policy change with sauces prior to us ordering. What he did say was that he could bring ramekins of sauce out next time. Well that's what he should have brought to our table instead of taking it upon himself to bring bowls and charge my friend. The fee was removed but it was poor service and communication on Bakersfield's part. I come to a restaurant for a pleasant dining experience, not to be given bad service and apiss poor back end explanation of their "policy change". 3/3/2020 I went back solo on a taco Tuesday and sat at the bar. I have not been here in almost two years since my previous bad experience and I will say that I had a good customer experience this evening. There were some menu updated and additions. I also noticed that the menu now states tacos sauces "available per request" which this was a nice update from my last visit. I ate my fav shrimp taco and tried the new to me pollo diablo taco too- equally flavorful and tasty. I topped it off with a Mezcal margarita. This was my first time visiting Bakersfield and I was impressed. My friend suggested we try them after a cocktail tasting at the Detroit Historic Museum on Friday night. We had all "tasted" at least 10 cocktails so we were ready to eat. We started with the trio (chips, guac, rojo and verde salsas), and the short rib queso. You can tell the chips are freshly made because they come out warm with the perfect amount of salt. The dips were delicious, the guac mixed with the verde sauce was my favorite. I ordered Baja shrimp taco, fish taco and hongos (portobello mushroom). The shrimp was my favorite and the hongos was surprisingly flavorful. All of the tacos are the size of street tacos and cost about $4 each. I also got a pineapple margarita which was delicious. I will be back the next time I'm in the area. read more

I ordered the house margarita and it did not disappoint. I also tried the chorizo chili (It was thick and hearty, and had lots of spice). The tacos I had were the Bistec (steak) and some sort of pulled pork taco. The steak taco was phenomenal! The meat was marinated oh so perfectly, and the rest of the taco complimented the meat. The pork taco was just, meh. Despite the guac and other components, it left me desiring more. Not good enough to justify the price point, but good. + decent amount of guacamole for the price. Well more than they give at Imperial. Imperial gives you a quarter of an avocado and this one gives you maybe 3/4 of one. Cons: - $16 combo for per person is not really worth it. They give you appetizers, but not enough for 7 people (which we had). Overall this place is good for tacos, BUT if you want real tacos, I recommended this scale for "authenticity". Left belle island on a Saturday and just knew I had to get something to eat and quick! So we hustled over to Bakersfield. I've literally been wanting to come here forever now so happy we finally had the time to pop in. We were quickly sat inside at the bar, which the bar had a really nice vibe as did the bartender! I ordered jalapeño margarita and my husband ordered regular and margarita, both remix strong and tasted so fresh and delicious on the hot 80 something degree day we were having. We decided on the Baja, short rib, hongos and the papas chorizo. All of the tacos were packed with flavor but I must say the short rib were my favorites! We were already late to a show at the Fillmore, we went in hoping to have a quick meal, not knowing there was a Justin Bieber concert in town just up the street. My friend and I split the queso dip. The dip was great, creamy and flavorful. I had the pollo diablo taco and short rib taco. The pollo diablo is superrrr hot. It was good, but a bit too spicy for me and I wouldn't get it again. The short rib was tender and I highly recommend trying it.
