We came here to try Botana. The place is really fun and festive inside. We were greeted and seated immediately, our server was very friendly and helpful, checked on us frequently. I already knew what I wanted above and was delighted they were able to accommodate a vegetarian version without meat. GF ordered the black bean tostadas. Much to my delight, they had a drink special on Sunday which was their house margarita. The botana came out as a mound of chips and toppings, overflowing on the plate. It's hard to distinguish from nachos but from my observations, there are a few characteristics that are specific to a botana: specifically chorizo and refried beans are mixed together (mine was without chorizo) and specifically muenster cheese is used. The traditional toppings are onions, green pepper, avocado, tomato, and jalapeño sliced and laid on top. I am also seeing that botana is often sliced into "wedges" with a knife for consumption but I went the nachos route and ate it chip by chip. It was very good but similar enough to a very distinct kind of nachos. I'm glad I tried it. GF's tostadas were enjoyable as well. I specifically liked their chips, just thick enough to hold onto toppings but crisp and salted perfectly. Margaritas were tasty, very flavorful and got the job done. Good spot. read more

We go to Armando's A LOT. Probably 8-10 times a year. We go on Friday nights. There is never a problem getting a table, the service is lightning-quick and good, the atmosphere is festive and bright, and there are authentic and American options on the menu. I find the quality of food and drinks to be excellent, especially for how inexpensive it is. The quesobirria taco may just be the most comforting bite of food you can take. read more

Our waitress was very nice. She brought out a birthday treat for my friend. The food was good and they gave a decent amount of meat for one taco. The temperature of the spot we were in kept changing though. It was super cold at first, and then they turned the heat on and it became super hot, then they turned off again and on again. When I was a kid, my dad would bring burritos from Armando's home. It's been over 15 years since the last time I had it, so I was curious to see how it is now. Simply put, it fell short of my expectations. The first red flag, the tortilla chips were stale. The second red flag, the server unexpectedly described the cuisine as "not authentic" while we were ordering. Despite this, I still wanted to try a few items to see for myself. I ordered a pork tamale, an al pastor taco, a quesabirria taco, and a burrito with chunky beef and cheese on top, all à la carte. My wife got a taco salad. The al pastor taco was my favorite part of the meal. The marinade had a great flavor profile, and the taco itself offered a generous amount of meat. The burrito was good, but the contents within it were unevenly spread. The quesabirria taco, tamale, and taco salad were all standard at best. The taco's presentation was disappointing, as it was floppy and needed more meat. By no means does Armando's offer a "bad" experience. At the same time, there are so many other Mexican restaurants in Southwest Detroit more deserving of my business. read more

Very popular spot from the locals. They have great drink specials and good food to boot. I ordered the Birria-rito and a few Tequila Sunrises and enjoyed my meal. The place was totally empty today which was surprising. The place used to be crowded for lunch and packed for dinner. Had the Mexican Sandwich with extra cheese. It was fresh, hot and yummy with a side of guacamole. Large portion, where I ate half and took half home for later. I also had a margarita. It wasn't strong AT ALL so I ordered a side of tequila. I went back to Armando's yesterday for lunch. I ordered 1 Taco al Carbon, Grilled Steak w/Corn Tortilla ($4.50), 1 Taco al Pastor w/Corn Tortilla ($4.25), 1 Baja Seafood taco w/Corn Tortilla ($5.95). It was Wednesday, so a Strawberry Margarita was only $5 (no salt on the rim please). Service by Dominique was polite and exemplary. Of the 3 types of tacos, my favorite was the Baja Seafood. But ALL of them were DEEELICIOUS. The margarita had just the right amount of tequila in it and was not too sweet. It is a nice, family friendly restaurant. The bathroom was IMMACULATE. The best enchiladas I have ever had! Cute restaurant in MexicanTown in Detroit, we got there right before the rush, but either way it would've been worth the wait. We were seated immediately, I was torn between the tamales and enchiladas so I went with the waitress suggestion of enchiladas and so glad I did. The ground beef was seasoned to perfection and they use Muenster cheese on the enchiladas and it added the flavor. Highly recommend! Me and my family love to visit at least quarterly. Armando's is our go to when we go to Southwest Detroit. They have the best hot salsa. I do both carry out and dine in. They tasted different so I assumed they thought I ordered the fried tilapia taco and the beer battered fried fish taco. The fried tilapia taco was a bit tasteless to me. You tasted the crunch of the fish but not the flavor of the fish. This was a strange visit. I normally have this delivered or pick up. I never dine in. Thought i would do so today. Our server was spastic and not attentive at all. So I decided to have an early dinner at Armando. Peach sangria and chimichanga meal food was OK service not so good as I sat there for almost 5 to 10 minutes at the bar while I watched the bartender serve all the other people greet everybody else with pleasantries, I was the only African-American person at the bar and hate to say I felt the rudeness I would not recommend going back unfortunately, my recommendation to the establishment is to do better! read more

I called here twice before arriving to dine in. The first time they put me on hold for a long time. I hung up and called again. They answered this time with "there is a 45 minute wait for dine and and they close at 10pm." That's is definitely not a way to answer the phone. They should have been more inviting. All you're doing at that point is scaring people away. I decided to go to Armando's anyways because we weren't that hungry yet and wouldn't have minded waiting, but when I arrived, the entire dining area was empty. I was honestly confused at that point. I thought this place would be poppin'. Once seated, the service this get better. Our waitress was really nice and got out order in right away. It did take a while to get our drinks, but other than that she took care of us through out the evening. My wife ordered their enchiladas suizas, and I ordered their Tampiqueña. The enchiladas were good and were stuffed with chicken tinga and served with a side Spanish rice and beans. This dish would have tasted better if they went with another style of chicken and not their tinga. It just doesn't go together. You have a chipotle type flavor chicken trying to fight with a citrus forward green chile. Just not a good combination. My tampiquena came with a decent sized skirt steak, beef taco in a hard shell, and cheese enchilada. The skirt steak was topped with grilled onions, and also served with rice and beans. The dish itself has good value. Definitely very filling, yet so much potential. The skirt streak, lacked any real flavor and seasoning. It was surprisingly very tender but still needed to be cooked longer to add some char. And a soft corn taco would make this dish feel more authentic. Also switching out the grilled onions with "cebollitas" onions would really make this dish stand out. Overall an average dinner. I was pretty excited to eat some Mexican food in "Mexicantown." I've been to Detroit several times but never wandered off into this part of the city. Being Mexican I unfortunately have high expectations, and I was a little let down with the quality of food being served. Perhaps there more authentic Mexican food in Mexicantown, Armando's just isn't it. Don't think I'll be coming here next time I'm in Detroit. read more

The service is excellent. However. This is Mexican food for people who have never had Mexican food before. Red flags: one type of salsa, two choices of meat, and no agua fresca. The tacos were the size of my hand, not a street taco at all, the chicken is dry and unseasoned except maybe salt. I asked if the salsa was spicy, they said yes. It's spiced with black pepper and jalapeno, which means it's not spicy at all, lacks flavor, and gives you one note of black pepper on the opening and a barely there heat later. Only two meat options?????? No birria? No lengua? camarones? nada? Rice is short grain, they just dump el pato in it after cooking it white, and the beans are from a can. The only redeeming thing is the flavor of the corn tortillas. TLDR: This is not authentic. Good for folks who like the idea of Mexican food and want to branch out from Taco Bell but are afraid of spice and flavor. read more

I tried to make it at home, but of course it wasn't the same. Their chips and salsa are fresh and delicious while you wait for your food. We pretty much carry out and haven't dined in in a while. Well we were visiting family in Detroit and we tried to go to an authentic Mexican Restaurant and it was an hour wait, so my brother in law suggested this place, and well it was cheap. Thats the best thing I could say. The worst tacos I have ever eaten, Taco Bell is a step up and I hate Taco Bell. No flavor, bland, tasteless, salsa was bland, chips were stale and well it was bad. A-maz-ing!!! I can't say how great our server, Gaby was. Our lucky day as she told us she is normally behind the bar. Great portion on the torta. My companions ordered burritos and enchiladas; each of them cleaned their plates. We also tried the carnitas taco. The only negative is that they don't have a carnitas dinner on the menu. We went on a very cold day but inside was warm and cozy. The entire restaurant was clean and well kept including the restrooms. Came here Saturday May 5th. The wait to be seated was long as I do not understand why, there were open tables inside and outside in the patio, more open tables than people waiting. Had a couple drinks at the outside bar and at the dinner table when seated, the drinks were weak and barely had enough alcohol considering they were $14 each. I think this restaurant took advantage of the Cinco De Mayo holiday. The wait staff was friendly but terrible probably because she was overwhelmed with the amount of work between the tables she had.
