Backyard asada tacos
Kitty K.

Fairly new establishment, located in Southwest Detroit. Quaint and cozy inside. The complementary chips and salsa were delicious, as well as the backyard Asada and Quesa Birria. Probably one of the best we've had in this area. We waited around 40 minutes for our two simple meals to be delivered to our table. Unfortunately, the owner has now decided to do catering, and it has interfered with the dining room service wait times. We will definitely order again, but next time I think we will do carryout!

Great new addition to the metro Detroit food scene! It very much feels like a taqueria in Mexico -- nothing fancy but warm and inviting. The staff is super friendly and the service is quick. The food was delicious. I split the queso fundido and guacamole with some friends and both went fast. I ordered 4 tacos. The Birria tacos might be some of the best in town. And the Ay Papa! were good but not as noteworthy. The owner/chef came by to chat with us and he seemed really nice and genuine -- definitely the type of person that's easy to support. Will definitely be back!

Tacos Wuey opened its doors in July 2025. Prior to dining in, I was intrigued by the menu. Chef Eddie Vargas put together a collection of fusion dishes you're not likely to find elsewhere. Rather than traditional tortilla chips, meals start with flour chicharrones. The salsa they came with had some kick to it. The birria egg roll appetizer was too enticing to pass up. They were a bit dry, but the arugula and consommé they were served with complemented them well. The spaghetti verde con milanesa was another dish I had to try. This pasta dish features a pablano-based sauce and is topped with fried chicken cutlets. The sauce was mild, and the chicken was cooked perfectly. I also tried 4 different tacos, ranked below: 1. Birria 2. Carne Asada 3. Milanesa 4. Orejón (pig ears) For dessert, I ordered flan. It was simple, but had a nice presentation. Using caramel, Chef Eddie signed his initials on the plate, and topped the flan with a piece of caramel bark. There are numerous quality Mexican restaurants in the Metro Detroit area, but few offer a menu as unique as Tacos Wuey. My first experience here was enjoyable, and I'm confident my next visit will be even better.

Was told by a local to try this place. Walked in and found they don't serve alcohol but I could buy it from a store across the street and bring it in. Brought in a Negra Modelo. Had guacamole which was good but lacked spice, lime and salt. Server brought items right away. Got Bierria and asada tacos. Both were good.

Tacos Wuey is not your typical taco spot. The menu has an upscale twist that sets it apart, with creative and flavorful tacos that taste like something straight out of a fine dining experience. I've been a handful of times since it opened just a few months ago! One of my absolute favorites is the Molcajete. It is rich, full of flavor, and easily one of the best I have ever had. The aguas frescas are also amazing, each made with a fun twist that keeps things refreshing and unique. The ambiance is great, stylish yet comfortable, and perfect for a cute date night or a fun evening with friends. There is parking in the back, which makes it super convenient. The owner also hosts monthly five course dinners, and every one I have tried has been delicious and beautifully presented. You can tell the chef puts real heart and creativity into every dish. If you want something different, flavorful, and full of good vibes, Tacos Wuey is the spot. Highly recommend supporting this small owned business!

Checked this place out randomly since I was in the area with friends. I really liked the barria tacos and they were able to make it without cilantro. The Milanesa tacos were okay, but not really something I'd order again. They gave us some samples of sauces. I really liked the jalapeño one. My friend really liked the fish tacos and the barria ramen was good too. Unfortunately the guacamole dip was lacking in seasoning so it was a bit bland. Our waitress/hostess was very nice and checked in on us a lot despite how busy it got. The place is small, but has cute decor and a decent amount of seating. I think they are probably a little pricey for the size of the tacos, but it was still not expensive.

This restaurant is great. It has a family vibe and is packed with happy guests enjoying generously portioned plates and bowls of Mexican American cuisine. I'll be back soon.

Restaurant capacity is 40. Multiple low tables. So much on the menu that I want to try. I have no choice but to go back. We were given a sampler of sauces, and all (but the bean) sauce were tasty (because I don't like beans, I didnt even try it.) We had decided on our order until Tina told us the special: "carne" something I believe My bf switched to that, and it looked and tasted glorious. He also ordered orejon (pig ears). I had expected them to be rubbery and flavorless. They were the complete opposite. They had flavor & the texture was a soft crispyness. I would definitely eat pig ears again! The horchata isn't watered down or overly sweet. I got camarones yucatecos and taco-l-gando. The rice & shrimp in the sauce were very well seasoned. The steak in the tacos were tender & well seasoned as well. I was offered tortillas with my plate but I declined bc I had 2 tacos to eat . I'm looking forward to my next trip to try something else!

This place was in my radar for an over a month. The reviews are accurate. The appetizer, entree, and dessert was on point! Our waitress was friendly and helpful. We had a 5pm reservation and were seated immediately. I loved the horchata con cafe. My friend said that the hibiscus mango beverage was equally delicious. I can't wait to return

Quesabirria

If you are looking for fancy Mexican food, this is your place. If you are looking for a traditional taqueria, this is not the place for you. We got the quesabirria and the spaghetti verde con milanesa for our main courses and both were very tasty. As an appetizer we got the guacamole with pork belly chicharrón. The appetizer was not as good as the main course, and I would not purchase again. The chicharrón needed to be cooked more to have some sort of a crisp to it and the guacamole was lacking salt. My husband got the horchata to drink, which he really enjoyed, but felt there was more ice than horchata. For dessert we had the Dubai chocolate churros, which were really good. Service was great! The inside just had a standard look to it. Overall I personally would come back for the spaghetti verde con milanesa and the churros.

A different and unique approach from the usual Mexican food available in the area. The Torta de Chilaquiles is the surprise favorite for me. The inside of the restaurant is also really well designed and put together. Service was a little choppy but that could just be first days hiccups and the sudden rush of traffic that started flowing in when were there.

The chicken skin taco very nice

I really like this place and I really like their tacos and I really don't want you to come here so I don't have to wait in a line. It's a cali/mexico city taco kinda place not a grab and go taco place with just the basics. It's fancy good tacos. I hope I painted a good picture. Cheers to tacos and their makers!

The ribeye fajitas - grilled steak with onions and peppers.
Matthew B.

What a charming little spot! Starting with the salsa and chicharrones, to the specialty salsas brought to my table, the authentic music, and even my waitress singing along to the tunes. There was also a traditional ofrenda set up for the upcoming Día de los Muertos. Starting with the salsa, the main tomato-based one was medium heat, onion-forward, and truly flavorful. The server brought out two specialty salsas: one was a mango habanero, and the other was an avocado Serrano. Both were packed with flavor, mild in heat, and excellent on the pinwheels. I ordered the ribeye fajitas and was not disappointed. Imagine grilling a ribeye, slicing it thick for fajitas, then adding grilled vegetables and serving with pico de gallo, fresh guacamole, and sour cream. I would have preferred a bit more salt on the meat. I tried the churro cheesecake and was somewhat disappointed. It had an excellent presentation, but the "cheesecake" was dense and almost rubbery, and the "crust" was nearly bread-like. The only redeeming feature was that it had that cinnamon churro flavor. The presentations were all spectacular, the food was delicious, and the service was friendly and attentive. Definitely a must-try if you enjoy Mexican cuisine!

Shrimp with this amazing sauce, highly recommend!

I'll have to come back for the chicken. Also Botanas. They are on the menu, and while I may have some deep reservations about this unique Detroit-Mexicantown dish, I'm going to have to return to try those too. But let's get to the tacos. I love that they are on small, doubled, corn tortillas. I love that they are only $3 a pop (less during Taco Tuesday). I love that they have some very traditional fillings. I love that they come with radishes and plenty of limes. After reading through some of the reviews I was compelled to try the following fillings, which are below in ascending order of their deliciousness: - Carne Asada: It's fine, but I wouldn't get it again. - Cabeza: Tender and flavorful, but oddly dry for a typically rich filling. - Carnitas: Juicy, tender, and delicious! A winner. Among the best I've had in the region. - Al Pastor: Yes! Finally! So far, the only good version I've found of this classic here in the area. I'd say it's a must order. Oddly, what dragged these tacos down for me was the choice of the corn tortillas. They were a bit too stiff, and their flavor was so pronounced that the shells overwhelmed the fillings. Typically in this type of situation, one can simply remove one of the two tortillas and just eat them gingerly to avoid the potential failure of the taco's structural integrity. However, my tortillas somehow fused together which made the operation impossible. What does that mean? Well, in future visits I am going to be looking for other ways to make the carnitas and al pastor shine! Maybe it's in a quesadilla. Perhaps a torta? Or could it even be atop a plate of Botanas? The mind boggles. But I'm looking forward to the journey and giving El Rey that fifth star when I find it. Oh, one last thing. The horchata is tooth achingly sweet. Next time I'll try another aqua fresca in the hopes it might be better.

I ordered a carnitas burrito, one of my favorites. The food took over 45 minutes to come after we ordered it. Our table ordered 5 tacos and a burrito.... 45 minutes is outrageous. Once it finally came, my burrito was about half the size of what it typically is (posted a photo of my last burrito from here for reference) Then, they cut the burrito and there were pieces of foil all in the burrito (pictured) really not okay. The worst part, there were three massive bones in my burrito!!!!! When I complained, they said that carnitas has bones in it... I've never had bones in my burrito. They asked if I wanted something else and I said I want the same burrito but without bones and they told me that if I got the same meat it would probably also have bones in it so they didn't remake it for me. If I bit down on it I could've broken my tooth or choked. Really really disappointed with my experience last night. I'll be back because this isn't "normal" for them, but I'm really disappointed. The manager ended up comping my burrito and explained to me that sometimes baby bones get through the meat when they're cooking it... you can see from the picture we're not talking about baby bones- these were three massive quarter size bones

I have been trying Mexican restaurants all over the U.S. and no where compares to vecino and to think I found my favorite in Detroit amazes me. It truly is worth every penny. For what to order: All their appetizers are great. We usually switch it up and are satisfied with each one that we've ordered. The Totopos with salsa are a must and their guac is great as well. For mains- the asada del día is our go to. It is always cooked to perfection and comes with fresh tortillas. And it is hard for me to come by a tortilla in the U.S. that I enjoy. But here, they are excellent. They import their corn from Mexico and you can tell. This is served with bone marrow and some garlic onion spread that goes great on the taco. For dessert- their tres leches is amazing. The coconut cream pairs so well with the cake. I could eat like 10 of them. As if it's not obvious at this point vecino is my favorite restaurant in Detroit and one of my tops in the world. I will not be surprised if they are the first ones in Detroit to secure the Michelin star

I felt a little out of place being here given just how trendy and super party-like atmosphere it all was haha! And in the months since I've come here, it remains a super popular spot to go to if you're looking for that extremely lively atmosphere! None of this takes away from the quality of their delicious food! We had incredible dishes and they clearly take a lot of pride in sourcing intentionally all their ingredients for their food, and the waitstaff did their best to intro us to everything, despite how overstimulatingly loud the environment was, so I only came away from each presentation with about half the information they wanted to convey. But all in all, the food was good across the board, and we tried a ton of different dishes. There weren't any that were overwhelming showstoppers that made me want to come back here again and again to try the rest of the menu though, so I left Vecino knowing that I wasn't going to return anytime soon. It's definitely for a specific mindset and type of celebratory occasion, which is often not the one I'm in when I'm going out to eat with friends.
