I chose this place because of the description which I really needed and it doesn't have anything to do with the description. A very mediocre experience. The practitioner sneezed twice - no mask. I had to request that she get one. The practitioner not only left the room to speak to someone who came into the business, but she carried on a short conversation out-loud with a colleague of her . I have been at Balance Chi before a few times and it was ok, but not this time. Not only they overbooked people (several showed up at 5:30pm and the lady didn't speak any English, so she couldn't even explain why), I volunteered to wait 45 min as another woman had to go somewhere. Not even a tea while I was waiting :( and the loud merry Christmas music was playing in February lol (!?) The man who did the massage did not ask about my 'problem area' and the next day the pain was so great that I expected bruises... Just my honest review. When I first moved to Madison I asked around for recommendation for a massage place. I heard lots of differing ideas but none that really seemed like what I was looking for, I do not want a "spa" experience with mood lighting and tranquil music...that requires talking all or most of my clothes off, booking far in advance and paying big bucks! Coming from a big city with a ton of mom and pop walk-in no-frills massage places that offer a therapeutic and deep massage. I want bang for my buck so I can go more often! Finally I found my ideal massage place -and this is it! There might be a slight language barrier with some of the massage therapists but it does not translate to a lackluster experience. The massage was intuitive and my back, shoulder, neck and hips felt light-years better when I left! They have both chair massage and table massage options. I have been going here for a long time and don't think I will anymore after yesterday's experience. When I walked in the woman pressured me into a table massage instead of a chair massage ($15 more expensive). I had a headache and so I decided, "Ok. Might be a good idea. More relaxing." I told her I had a headache and stiff neck. She spent about 20 minutes on my low back and I had to remind her twice about my head and neck. The last five minutes she gave a very rough head massage, left the room to let a customer in, came back in, continued to talk to the customer through the door during my massage. Then when I went to pay, I presented my 10 punches on my punch card (free 20 minutes-$24ish). She tried to charge me $30 which made no sense. ($40-24=$16). I questioned this and she changed her mind to $20. I did not even come in for a thirty minute table massage. Annoying. Overcharged, not relaxing. read more

This is hard - the massages are fair to good - depending on who you get - however - mostly over the blanket - very little oils - and you better be sure you are just looking for a basic eastern massage - - without having to explain anything because so little english is spoken. If it is too hard, too soft - they will not understand anything you say - which is really, really frustrating!!!!! Therapists leave the room several times during the massage - and one even took a call while I was in there. It is an odd experience - if you are desperate - it is OK - but not really a spa-like experience....especially for 56 bucks (when a membership at a spa-like salon is 60/mo.) I have been going to Balance Chi for over a year now on a regular basis. This is not a typical day spa, but they will give you a great massage and relief of your aches and pains. Their prices are wonderful and you do not have to make an appointment weeks in advance to get in. They are very accommodating. I never even tell them what spots I need work on, they just find them. This is a far better massage than you would get at a fancy spa! The only negative is that sometimes they are too hard. You just need to speak up and tell them.
