Coffee Shop No. 493 Bald Guy Brew Blowing Rock, NC April 9, 2025 I was instantly drawn to this shop because of their name. Bald Guy Brew! The logo might be one of my favorites of all the coffee shops I have visited. Sadly, my barista had hair and there were no stickers. Not only do I enjoy cortados, but I have a thing for stickers from coffee shops. I should use that hashtag. #coffeeshopstickers I can't be the only 80's baby who has a thing for stickers from coffee shops. The setting of the Bald Guy Brew is picturesque. It sits at the end of a busy street in a little mountain village. Chairs and tables are set up outside. We actually soaked in some sun before I walked in and bought a cortado. The shop was aesthetically pleasing with different colors of wood, black borders and accents, and plenty of natural light. My gaze was immediately drawn toward one of the most beautiful Kyoto-style slow drip coffee tower I've ever seen. The live edge of the tower was stunning and it hung majestically on the wall. I couldn't help but stand there and admire it for a bit. The atmosphere was relaxing and peaceful. I could have sat there all day in the coffee shop. The cortado's description on the menu, "A 'cortado' is a serving of espresso that is cut with an equal part, or slightly more, of warm milk," made me hesitate. I was worried it gave the barista freedom to turn my cortado into a flat white; which happens often. But I noticed the word "cut" in the description so I went ahead and ordered the cortado (I know...having coffee drama or problems is a tough life). The cortado was delicious served at a perfect temperature with a good ratio of milk to espresso. Enjoying life one cortado at a time! read more

Lovely little coffee shop on Main Street in Blowing Rock. The inside is quaint and clean, while there's some additional tables and chairs outside so that you can enjoy your beverage of choice in the fresh air. My grandmother was hoping for some kind of baked good, but the only offering available by the time we arrived were some prepackaged mini muffins. It doesn't seem like there's generally much of a selection available, as the display for baked goods is quite small... they could definitely improve in this area. Both my mother and grandmother ordered regular coffees. I decided to shake it up a little and order a London Fog. Typically, you'll find London Fogs made with Earl Grey Tea, unsweetened vanilla almond milk (or something similar) that's foamed, and vanilla extract. Unfortunately, my London Fog here didn't have any hint of vanilla... so it left a bit to be desired. Service here is attentive though. There was only one person working when we visited, and there was a group of 4 or 5 people that came in as a group right after us. The barista made sure to take care of everyone and any waiting was minimal. read more

A great coffee spot in Blowing Rock! They offered a variety of different coffees, espressos and teas! Something for everyone! They had quite a few syrup options. Including one that had cinnamon, which isn't as common. One thing my friends noted was that their chai tea mix was sugar free. This is apparently not the normal case for chai tea. She was delighted and loved it! There was also a little sitting area right outside the shop. Super cozy and fun! read more

Was perusing around town, stopped in for a coffee, Stephen one of the batista was super Friendly and knowledgeable. Suggested a maple lavender latte. It was perfect. My latte was just okay, really wasn't great and/or tasted like burned espresso? I don't know, I wasn't really a huge fan. Overall, it seemed like a cute little shop. The staff was friendly. It did take a little long to make my drink. Had about 4 drinks ahead of me, but one main girl running the register and one making the drinks. It was a little busy inside and I'm sure they had a busy day being a Sunday, but they still did a great jump getting the drinks out. I didn't go to the back area that maybe connects to the juice bar? It seemed a bit small with not a lot of seating. Two up front, a bar like area and a bench with two coffee table (hehe) tables. They didn't seem to have any baked goods. As someone who would drink the overpriced mermaid coffee because it was loaded with sugar and wasn't bitter. Had an espresso late at the Boone location and was the best cup I've ever had. Don't need the extra sugar or flavors with this coffee. I've tried the Espresso, El Tio, Blue Star Moms and Nicaragua blends. Can't go wrong with any of them. Great coffee with a really nice indoor seating area. The patio outside is even better when the weather is nice. I had a Nitro Cold Brew that was smooth and refreshing. The service was slow, but only because one barista was doing it all. I thanked her for her hard work and left a nice tip. Bald Guy has fantastic drip coffees, espresso drinks, nitro coffee and coffee beans. My husband and I come here regularly to get our caffeine boost and grab some coffee beans. Service is always so fast here. They'll have two or three people working; one will be taking your order while the others are simultaneously making your drinks. So by the time you're done paying, your drinks are usually already sitting at the pick-up counter. read more

This is a terrific coffee spot that takes coffee to an art form-no hype like chain places, just delicious real coffee. We are on vacation visiting our uncle who lives in BR. We are tourists now, but my husband lived in BR with his dad as a kid. Husband and I met at college (ASU) Boone, NC. So, we are having a ball re-visiting this area and shopping, taking beautiful mountain pix, and eating at all the yummy places our uncle loves. This place is the real deal. Instead of my usual, tried and true coffee with cream, I thought, "I am on vacation! The leaves are just starting to change-pumpkin spice latte!!" So, I waited outside with our dog as my husband went in and placed our order. He came out to tell me it was organic- such happy news! And then went in to get our treats. Oh, my goodness!!!! It was PERFECT! You know you aren't drinking a crappy chain coffee drink because it is not sicky- sweet, but actually flavorful coffee. We thoroughly enjoyed our selections. Just drive on by the gross national chain "coffee" places and make your way to Bald Guy. So worth it. read more

Not a great experience. Coffee was just ok. Employees seemed unhappy as well as some of the people in the establishment. We enjoy visiting Blowing Rock and decided to go to what seemed to be a new establishment. Aside from the condescending manager seemed pretty cocky and rude to his employees and snarky with customers. The place was pretty messy where the drinks were being prepared and def not the vibe we will be supporting again. We will be visiting our other local favs for a good cup of Joe. read more

The coffee here is really good, we've come 2 days while visiting. I agree with some of the other posts that this little shop is missing personality. 1st day no food items at all (big miss!) and 2nd day 3 young people working and while the 2 girls chatted incessantly to each other their lack of customer care was apparent. Both were smooth and full of flavor. . They also sell local honey with a large variety of flavors and local meat. We got some burgers and pork sausage links to grill while in town, and they were really good. The meat is on the pricey side but that is expected with fresh local meat. They also have a small shop in Blowing Rock in case you don't make it here. Definitely put them on your list of places to go while in town. This bald guy knows his stuff!

With proper heating time, these would have been top notch and 5 star all around. We'll be back for more bakery goodness for sure. We'll politely ask that the items get heated through next time just in case.

Definetly the coffee spot to hit when you're in blowing rock. Not only is it right next to the park, but it's in the middle of downtown Blowing Rock! If you time it right they have local artist markets right outside which makes it that much better. Love the location, love the coffee. They have a pretty solid menu, but I like to order off the menu and the baristas were all about it. Pastries are on point . Try an iced Americano, best coffee I've had in awhile. The first time was September 13, 2021; the ending stages of COVID so customers were not allowed in the shop. I ended up drinking coffee outside with three local gentlemen; one of the them was Larry. He is an owner and a Marine Veteran. We had some good laughs and I learned a lot about Banner Elk and the surrounding area. After visiting Fred and Larry's Coffee the first time, I realized I wanted to make exploring local coffee shops a part of my life; and here I am almost 500 coffee shops later. On my second trip I enjoyed a cortado while relaxing on Fred and Larry's big comfy leather couch. The barista was super friendly. She is definitely an incredible asset to the shop.
