This is definitely more of an industrial facility, don't expect a cafe or something even remotely resembling one. It's a little out of the way, but if you want to buy some freshly roasted beans right from the source, you can't beat this place. My beans were literally roasted yesterday according to the bag. The retail counter only allows 1 person in at a time, and rightfully so; it's tiny. I knew what I wanted, requesting the euro espresso beans. I am fortunate that I live close to Black Powder Coffee. I like to buy locally roasted coffees to ensure freshness. I have tried many of the roasters in Charlotte. I am so happy I gave Black Powder a try. Their coffees are very good. I have tried 5 different beans/roasts they have all been very good, and they were all roasted just a few days before I bought them. I make a lot of espresso drinks, and bean freshness is a big factor in the quality and flavor with espresso. This place is a true hidden gem. The customer area is tiny, so unless you're taking a tour you will be in and out very quickly. They have grown a bit to have many different flavors, maybe too many? One of the best perks, no pun intended, is that they can make/sell you a cup of coffee as well (this is not a coffee house with seating and dozens of choices). It's typically a nice pour over and one of the best around in my opinion. Only reason for not giving 5 starts is that the (same) woman running the counter is always miserable and not personable at all. My husband and I had a wonderful experience at Black Powder Roasting Company. After finding a deal on a tour (plus freebies) on groupon, we booked a Saturday afternoon tour on 9/5. The tour is an hour long and guided by the owner and founder of the family business. We sampled various roasts between production and source explanations. The owner helped us each to refine our palates and, based on our preferences, recommended the best roast for each of us (which we then sampled!). Hello, my name is Linda this is my second review ever. My daughter took me to this shop since I drink coffee and told her that Folgers will beat any coffee out there. Talking to the owners made me realize that there coffee was worth a try plus I am all about small businesses. I took home the Black Powder Peabody Blend. First the Packaging is wonderfully thought out humidty free and you can self sealing after every use. On to the first cup. I have a hometown single brew coffee maker. Less expensive than the named brand products but works good for under a hundred dollars. The coffee is produced on premise packaged there. I do not have a grinder and is already ground there for you, just ask. I brewed and tasted thinking I would not care for it. SOOOOOO Wrong I now have changed my mind thru my taste buds. I have to say it is the best I think I have ever tasted. You cant go wrong with the full body creamy taste as is entires your mouth and then the taste stays with you so delicious. I couldn't believe it. So a second cup went into my palate and still delicious. Please if you want a great satisfying cup of coffee this is the place to go buy and if you buy in the k cups which they carry the price is less or the same as the large company corporations. Having tried their coffee several times I can assure you this company is not what they say, even their "light" roast is super dark for the roast, they are always scorched which gives a nasty ash taste. You can order two coffee bags of the same coffee and same roast and by sight you can tell that both have a different roast level. I say this because I have 10 years of experience working in the real Specialty Coffee world, being a barista, cupper, roaster and trainer in different countries and companies from the US, Korea, Italy, Australia and Guatemala. This brings me to say that they can't even spell "Guatemala" correctly, I'm uploading a picture of a bag with how they spelled it as a proof. I always try to be nice and not leave bad comments but this company made me furious, they are misinforming and misleading people besides providing a bad roasting service. read more

I had heard about Black Powder Roasting in a local newspaper article and stopped in when driving by and saw their folding sign near the driveway to their location. They're in a business park and there's no signage, aside from the folding "real estate" style sign they usually have out when they're open (go around the right corner of the building to find them). They have limited open retail hours on Friday and Saturday but I bet they're flexible. I've been back about 5 times now and have enjoyed all of the beans I've bought. They're great about recommending different beans to try and you can try them right on the spot via a fresh ground pour over. Their espresso is incredibly good as well. I don't make it myself but enjoyed one when picking up a pound or two. Their prices are very reasonable in my opinion and you can join a "club" if you're a frequent purchaser (I recently joined). Dave is a great coffee educator and makes great recommendations.
