Let me preface this by stating I do NOT live in the Dalles but visit here at least two weeks a year. The Baldwin is a must for us every time we visit. They have a great classic ambiance, good drinks, good service, and some amazing food. There is a saffron scallop dish that I order EVERY time it is available.The appetizers are great as well. We usually come with a group of five or more and each app feeds the group, especially the roasted garlic app! If you think you can't get great food in the Dalles I would think again. Oh, and check out the Octogenarian playing the organ up the ladder nightly, she is an amazing dame. read more

Old timey atmosphere which was great but the food was just not up to par. I really wanted to like it, but the seafood linguine reeked of wine that wasn't cooked off and the burger patties were mush. I did have the strawberry lemonade which was amazing (real puree!) and my husband liked the French Onion Soup. read more

This is our second time at Baldwin Saloon. Tonight we started with absolutely delicious Calamari. Chicken Sandwich homemade bun and honey mustard, with a scrumptious Cheese Burger and Carrot cake to go. Stopped in The Dalles for a lunch break on our way home from Eastern Washington. Thanks to Yelp we found Baldwin Saloon! Service was speedy but not rushed, and the food was terrific! Caesar Salad with light, not-overly-cheesy dressing, yum! French Onion Soup - delicious, although perhaps a tad too much cheese on top (did I really say that?). The fresh house made sourdough bread was excellent. LOCAL wines and beers, too! Will definitely be back on our next Columbia Gorge crossing! read more

The food is ok. The prices are a little steep. My favorite thing to eat is the fettuccini but I hate that they put dark meat chicken in it. The staff are friendly. The bread is super yummy. The sandwiches are good. Just costly. read more

This is our favorite place to eat in the Gorge. Everything we have ever ordered has been excellent. If you like a great burger, they grind their own meat. The chef is inventive without being 'out there". There is a full bar and 10 taps. The atmosphere is old time saloon with an amazing bar and old school art collection. It's tough to get a good meal out here in the sticks but I think we found 'the place'. read more

Two or three locals we met during the day recommended The Baldwin Saloon. We had about a 25 minute wait on a Saturday night ( they don't take reservations), but it was well worth it. The atmosphere is great, we were charmingly greeted by the host (owner?) who still remembered our names at the end of the evening. Live piano music gave it the saloon atmosphere. The server was polite, helpful, new... Did a good job. The lemon drop was perfect. The food was delicious! Best chicken parmesan I've ever had!!!! This place served every single item of food to cooked to perfection. For lunch I had a Baldwin Burger with potato salad & a huckleberry italian cream soda; the bun on the burger was soft and delightful, the meat was tasty and cooked to a perfect medium, the potato salad may have been the best I have ever had (Shh, don't tell mom I thought it was better than hers). My husband had the chicken strip dinner for lunch, quite honestly the best chicken strips we have ever consumed, they were not all breading which is typical of most chicken strips when out to eat. They were fried to a perfect golden brown and thier homemade BBQ sauce was amazing, the fries were more likely than not hand cut and oh so declicious (only 2 places can get away with soft fries Dick's in Seattle, and Baldwin Saloon in The Dalles and I presume it's because they are fresh cut and not out of a bag). We thought our lunch was so freaking delicious that we had to came back that night for dinner! My husband started off with a french onion soup, then ordered a NY steak with potatoes o'brien (who knew they were for dinner). I opted to try thier chicken soup with a twist (Chicken, cabbage, carrot, onion, celery, lime, and cliantro), it sounded strange, but worked out beautifully. For my meal I ordered a parmesean crusted halibut cooked with white wine, lemon and caper sauce, couscous, and veg. While the dinner was a bit pricey, we found it to be completely worth it, as we have both decided that this is ranked #1 now on our restaurant list, bumping the Rockfish Grill in Anacortes into 2nd (and they held our #1 rank for about 6 years). Now, aside from the food, the atmosphere was phenominal (or however the heck that's spelled). The wood work and local NW paintings were wonderful. At night they had an older lady up on the balcony playing old saloon time diddies which really just topped the feel of the place. We will most certainly be planning a trip back to The Dalles, even if it only is to eat here! Job well done! read more

This place was truly delightful! We visited in the early afternoon on a Friday. It was relatively slow, and our waitress was prompt and polite. The history of the saloon is awesome. We enjoyed looking at all the unique paintings and the relics of the past. We received excellent service, and we were able to make substitutions as needed. We ordered calamari to start, and the sauce that was served with it was absolutely amazing. Our meals came out quickly and we were once again impressed. The portions were generous, and the ingredients were high quality. They hand make everything in the restaurant and that is made clear. The bread is freshly baked and delicious. I ordered one of their unique sandwiches, and I couldn't be more satisfied. The prices were also quite reasonable. I'm not in The Dalles often, but I know where I'll be going whenever I'm in the area. read more

The Baldwin Saloon came highly recommended and the reviews we read seemed to support that. I should start by saying it is a very interesting place with a number of original paintings decorating its walls that depict scenes from around the Columbia River Gorge area. My wife had the rockfish tacos and she loved them. She also had the Triple Chocolate Decadence cake and found it delicious (I concur). I debated a 4 star rating but since I'm doing the review I'll focus on my meal. Looking for something light I had the S & S Louis salad which is "baby shrimp" and smoked salmon on a bed of greens. The smoke salmon was very good. Everything else in the salad, not so much. Frozen (briny) shrimp, grocery store ripened tomatoes, canned olives, etc. Just doesn't stand up to a $17 price for a salad, By the way, the wait staff was terrific. read more

Good old tunes from yesteryear. The feeling of antiquity puts this place on the map as a must see place in The Dalles, Oregon. We were treated with live piano music, ambience of what once was In the old days of western settlement. It's located historically near what once was likely the busiest part of town in times of railroad stations and whistling horns of old steam trains. Its hard not to imagine women with parasols men in wool suits, horse drawn wagons, in the excitement of the busy town market. Mainly, the food was very delicious well prepared with generous portions. Surprises with bread salad and an extra side that we've grown used having those choices absent in recent years. We walked slowly out admiring the artwork adorning the walls, we talked about the "experience" this place gave us. I would definitely wait in line for this place. Some times, when you need to stay some place unexpectedly, you discover something really good. For us, that would be the Baldwins Saloon! From my Spanish Coffee, so welcome on a cold, wintery night, to the homemade bread, delicious soup,salads, and entrees, it was all delicious! I was driving from Spokane to Ventura and the route took me close to The Dalles. I checked in on Yelp to see where we might want to get dinner. This place stood out. I decided to try the French onion soup as other people had suggested and found it incredibly good. The meal itself was just as appetizing. I had chicken scallopine and my wife had oyster Rockefeller. The environment is preserved from the time period in which the building was constructed. Live piano music added to the mood. What a fun surprise this was! After a day of hiking I just wanted to sit and have a nice early dinner.From start to finish our server Greg was wonderful with filling us in on the rich history of the place and the beautiful art work. This was the first place my girlfriend and I ate while here at The Dalles. I thought the service was very good. The wait staff were friendly and attentive. The food was better than we had even hoped for. We ordered the rock shrimp fettuccine and the halibut and chips. Both entrees were delicious. The cost was a little high, but we did order seafood. The Smoked Salmon/Shrimp Fettuccine and Potato, Bacon soup was incredible! The chunks of local fresh smoked salmon that were in the fettuccine were huge and incredibly delicious! What a great place! The atmosphere is cool! They kept the feel of the old west here! The food was delicious! My sweetie and I split a meal, planning on just eating off the same plate like we usually do. But they split it for us and gave us extra veggies to make the presentation on both plates beautiful! The rooms are full of old artwork and there was a woman playing the honky-tonk piano. What a fun place to visit! Check it out if you can! read more
