From the Old Fashion to the panna cotta - excellent. Started with fresh dinner salad dressed with a lovely vinaigrette, my salmon with huckleberry comport was outstanding. The green beans excellent, the risotto good. My partner's chicken Parmesan looked dry, but was moist, tender and the sauce flavorful. The stars were absolutely the salmon and the panna cotta. I pick places based on food not the looks or how big the company may be. This place was a hidden gem and intimate spot. it was close to where we were staying and it was unexpectedly amazing. Normally I have to sacrifice a good wine for great food when it's a smaller restaurant but NOT this place. Our waiter gave us great recommendations and had our BEST carrot cake I have ever tasted!! From owner to staff, we needed this experience after visiting OR for work and work kept getting delayed and drove 3 days straight... it's a must visit and allow restaurant to give you ideas based on specials or favorite dishes! I'm glad I read the earlier reviews advising to ignore the exterior appearance and go for the food. Salmon had a nice crisp on the outside, and although I'm not typically a fan of risotto, it made me rethink my bias, as it was wonderful. Definitely recommend this place! read more

Just passing through on I-84 decided to stop here on a Friday night. It was crowded but accommodating. My first hint of things to come was the bread placed on the table. It looked and tasted like balloon bread brought in from the nearest supermarket. And to add insult to injury it seemed stale. We decided to have one entrée and a nice appetizer. So we ordered the stuffed mushrooms. It looked good when it arrived at the table with an immense pile of cheese on top. -- another hint. It was too much cheese that may have caused it to be under cooked. Under the pile of melted cheese was more un-melted cheese and the stuffing in the mushrooms that were cold. It was a busy night there. We ordered the prime rib and it was my mistake to ask for rare-medium-rare instead of just medium rare. I never know if the cook will over cook a medium rare order to medium. It came out completely rare. But the zinger was the accompanying mash potatoes. They were smooth and lack taste. After a few bites I thought it might be because they were boxed instant mash potatoes. The au jus couldn't save them. Somebody should buy them an instant read thermometer and teach them to use on everything exiting the kitchen. Looking at all the 4 star ratings I can only imagine it was a one off for us. Friendly, prompt service from a team of professionals at dinner last night. Stuffed date appetizer was good. Balsamic vinegar and olive oil on the table was great for dipping bread and drizzling on lettuce that came with the dates. Blue cheese salad --yum! We shared a rib eye steak that was seasoned beautifully and cooked to perfection. The baked potato was cooked just the way I like it with an oiled skin and moist interior. Green beans cooked al dente rounded out the plate. Delicious fresh fruit--cherries, blueberries, strawberries, pears--were used creatively throughout the meal. We had a chocolate mousse pie-type thing that came with whipped cream, raspberry sauce and a pretty and delicious strawberry. Nice wine. Old-school ambience. This family owned steak house has been in operation since 1940, and is really a hidden gem. I almost passed it by because of the cheesy name, but that would be a mistake. This place is out of the 1970s, with plush red leather plush booths, and historic photos on the wall. It is a small, low volume restaurant- it looks to do 1 dinner per night per table--with excellent service and unexpected perks -- like complimentary homemade huckleberry ice cream at the end of the meal! What 2023 restaurant passes on the profit center of desserts? This one. A good $25 steak with all the fixins? The Top Sirloin was excellent. Great clam chowder. First off all of the plates looked like they came out of a hospital cafeteria,no thought in presentation at all. So first was my daughters clam chowder,which she called Clam Flour soup because it tasted like flour and water she took two bite and asked me to taste it it was horrible. Now the Entrees,first my Butternut Squash Ravioli: white bowl absolutely no garnish about 10 ravioli in a slightly beige sauce. No Garnish and no seasoning and they tasted as bland as they looked like store bought canned pumpkin filling. Unfortunately this will turn out to be the best dish we had! Next was my GFs Rib eye which she had to order because the Prime Rib Special she wanted was gone at 645 even though they only start serving it at 5pm, this was the second time we tried to have prime rib and it was already gone at this time. Anyway she ordered in Medium and it was rare. So she had a few bites and decided to take it home for later as we were busy dealing with my Daughters New York at the time. So my Daughter with the crappy chowder had received her New York and asked me to cut it for her as she was having a hard time. I started to TRY to cut this steak and it was possibly the worst cut of steak I have ever seen. It had so much gristle running through it that I was unable to cut a piece off of it at all anywhere on the steak. So I called our server over and told her that it was horrible and unacceptable and she said she agreed and took it back and was having them prepare another steak. The one that came out as a replacement had no sear on it hardly and was Beige and Gray looking when I cut into it it looked as though it had been microwaved...it looked like a pork chop inside. She ate a few bites and decided to take it home to the dog! Next the Chicken Parm wasn't horrible and wasn't good. Tasted like straight chopped tomatoes with no seasoning at all and the chicken was chewy she ate about a quarter of it and asked the server to take it away. Thank God for the chocolate, and carrot cake we had although the chocolate cake slice was huge and the carrot cake piece was very small. Overall a HORRIBLE experience and the prices for the quality were ridiculous. The next dinner is definitely going to be The Grill at the Country Club! prices are better and their homemade Lasagna is amazing. It seems when The HH is busy, quality goes out the window! I got here half an hour before they closed, which I didn't know, and they made me feel so WELCOMED about it. I usually do the chicken bianco but today I decided to do the chicken Parmesan. We made our first visit to the Hi-Way House after continually seeing a packed parking lot as we would drive by. We had heard that the service was not good but that the food was great. I am happy to say that not only was the food GREAT, but the service was good as well. There were 4 of us in our group and we enjoyed appetizers and Prime Rib, Fish & Chips, Pasta and Steak Fingers as well as desserts. We enjoyed everything! (The steak fingers were a little dry, but had good flavor) Our server was attentive and the owner came by our table at least 3 times to make sure we were pleased with everything. Okay, ignore the front of this 1940 restaurant, an old stone building, a little plain. But, once you walk inside it's another world. Classic fine dining atmosphere, with a combination of swing and 40's music, really sets the tone to sit back and relax. The staff were excellent. Very engaging and attentive. We ordered the 12 ounce Prime Rib, roasted Asparagus and Garlic mashed potatoes. My wife had the side salad which included strawberries and blueberries. It is made with a bbq sauce and the meat was very tender. Pulled pork sandwich was good size, flavorful and not soggy. Fast service, ready in 15-20 minutes. Had been wanting to check this out since we moved to The Dalles a few months back. It's funny because we had heard the Hi-Way House is fancy (and make sure you're not underdressed!), but also had someone say it's terrible and rundown, (I think they used the word "roadkill"). My wife and I both wore jeans and everyone there was dressed pretty casual. We felt welcomed as we walked in, and they had some good jazz playing which added to a nice ambiance. The service was the probably the best we've had in the Dalles and the Top Sirloin and Filet were delicious. The cocktails were nice too. The restaurant was nicely updated and very clean. We started out with the appetizer and fresh bread which was delicious! Then salad was good. But our main courses were just ok. My husband had the fish an d chips. He liked the fish it was light, crispy and fresh, but fries were those old crinkle bag fries and were Luke warm. I had the breaded chicken entree which was overly coated and over done. There wasn't really any flavor to it. Mash potatoes were heavy and thick it looked more like a patty and no flavor. The sauce was maybe a tablespoon drizzled. Dessert was a spoonful of ice cream that looked like they pre scooped it in a warm metal dessert dish and refroze it. I have been hearing about this place for quite some time and have been wanting to try it out. I finally got a chance to go for my birthday last week. You pull up to the outside and it is a green nondescript building. Nothing special, in fact it makes me think of a low class bar. My husband told me he was a bit nervous going inside. However, as you walk through the front door, the interior does not match the exterior. It is tastefully decorated inside. Several track lighting fixtures highlight different seating areas. The building is long and narrow with the kitchen at one end and a small bar/lounge at the other with restaurant seating in the center. The chairs at the tables are highbacked arm chairs on wheels. There is also booth seating available. The menu I think is the biggest shock. Be prepared to spend A LOT on your meal. I am talking about $8.00 just for a grilled cheese sandwich, paying $2.00 extra for a piece of cheese to put on your cheeseburger, or $3.00 for a soda with only one drink refill. Since it was my birthday, I wanted a steak. The steaks run around $30 with a soup or salad, and a small side. My steak was good and thick sliced, but all the steaks had a sauce on it. And while it was good, I don't consider it $30 good. My family's dinner choices included Fettuccini Alfredo, Grilled Salmon Ceasar Salad, Hamburger Steak, Barbecue sandwich, and cheeseburger. I got the Whisky Steak with a seafood chowder type of soup, garlic mashed potatoes, and asparagus. We also got two loves of sweet bread to share. There were no complaints by my family on the food. They all said it was excellent and ate every bite. Even my picky husband enjoyed his meal. To drink I had the Love Potion Number 9. It was like a strawberry lemonade. It was nice, the flavor was not over powered by an alcohol taste. I can recommend this restaurant for a good meal. I do believe it is over priced, but I know many people eat there over and over and I haven't heard any complaints. We did receive free ice cream for my birthday. I got a large scoop of vanilla ice cream that had been rolled in Cocoa powder and topped with whipped cream and chocolate drizzle. It looked like a baked potato. read more
