The grounds are well maintained, and the amenities are impressive. The pool area is pristine, the fitness center is fully equipped, and the communal spaces like the pickleball court & pond area are fantastic. It's clear that a lot of thought and care went into designing the resort to be a relaxing enjoyable place. If you're into off-roading, this is place for you, centrally located between downtown and some hard core trails. However, my experience with the ground staff was very disappointing. From the moment we checked in, it felt like we were an inconvenience rather than guests. After parking in front of our house while unloading within minutes, they came to tell us we need to move. Obviously we were unloading but the man in the golf cart pretended to clean with a leaf blower as he watched us. This was a daily routine for him. In our last day there as we are packing up and loading our Jeeps, he came by again and said "you know you guys need to leave in half hour right".... It felt a bit racist, uncomfortable and unnecessary. It was unfortunate because the potential for this place to be a 5 start is there, but the poor customer service overshadowed the entire experience. Therefore, 4 stars is the most I can give them. I hope management takes these issues seriously because with better service, this place could easily be the best RV resort in the area.

Due to a water main break at Arches National Park we had to search for a new place to camp while…read morenear Moab, UT hiking and vactioning. Horsethief Campground is run by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). Their mission is "To sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations." I did copy their mission from their website, FYI. Horsethief caught our eye online immediately. Though it did not have any running water offered, it was open during the winter. It also had toilets on site, which was a win for us. We decided to drive to Horsetheif and check it out. They offer both campsites and RV sites, but with no hook ups. All sites are first come, first serve. Which was also fine with us, because again, we were planning on camping during the winter, during a time when they had just had a good amount of snowfall. I was told that it was an unseasonable amount for that area at this time. As we drove we made note of how close the campground was to both Canyonlands National Park and Dead Horse Point State Park. We were planning on visiting both parks, so this seemed ideal. When we pulled in, (and do not blink, you can easily miss the entrance), we knew we found our campground. It was breath taking. The area was spectacular. It was covered with pristine snow and had Pinyon trees all around. It was like we were the only people there, we felt so secluded and protected. We picked tent site 25 and it could not have been more perfect. When we stay at Horsethief again we will aim to get the same site. It was close enough to the bathroom and yet hidden. I fell in love with our site and that campground in the short time we were there. The cost is $20 per night for tent sites and you need to bring exact cash. You simply put your cash in the provided envelopes and drop it in the drop box. When we visited there were no pens/pencils, and we did not travel with any, but I hope they know that we were the ones that paid. Please if you stay a night at Horsethief, please pay your fee, the money goes directly to the BLM and that is how they support taking care of their land. It was magnificent and I can not wait to return.

The extra amenities include a dishwasher, a washer and dryer for laundry, bike storage, and even a hot tub. You can walk to restaurants and a grocery store is just a few minutes away. Our two-bedroom unit also had a foldout coach, but I would not recommend having a third couple use it--too tight and no privacy. Otherwise I would definitely stay here again. Also, don't rent it from VRBO or Airbnb. Search for Moab Vacation Properties and rent it direct--you'll get a discount.

Our tent faced Arches National Park, and waking up to those views each morning was unforgettable. We stayed in an accessible tent, which was spacious, comfortable, and had convenient parking right next to it. The tent was a little warm at bedtime, but it cooled down nicely as the night went on. The amenities were wonderful. We loved grilling dinner, making complimentary s'mores every evening, and enjoying fresh coffee each morning. The staff was incredibly kind and always happy to provide us with ice or a cooler whenever we needed one. The nightly activities made our stay even more special. We enjoyed the bookmark-making activity, and the "Star-bathing Meditation" with Monika the most peaceful experience. We spent an hour lying on a rock, meditating under an incredible sky full of stars. It was so relaxing, and Monika made the experience unforgettable. We also spent hours stargazing from the hammocks. The night sky at Under Canvas Moab is absolutely breathtaking. The views are unlike anything we've ever experienced, and we would absolutely stay here again. The noise from the 191 is loud, incessant and unbearable. From the winding road, the tents are less…read morethan 1/5 mile from the highway, so in fact they are even closer. For Under Canvas to choose this location and then not to to disclose how loud - and constant- the traffic noise is... is disingenuous at best. The industrial level earplugs they leave at your bedside indicate their awareness of the problem, but you can even hear the traffic through those - though it is muted - and the noise ruins just sitting outside in nature and looking at the stars. Imagine being on a motel off the freeway with the windows open the entire time, and you get the picture. For them to charge the prices they do for this location is literally highway robbery... and you are practically right over the highway. So much for peace and quiet around the campfire at night -- the free s'mores cannot undo the damage to the ambiance of having cars and semi trucks constantly screaming by. Such a disappointment.

Cowboy Camp is about as "roughing it" as you can get: no water, no electricity, way out of town…read morefrom Moab (which is already "out of town.") Still there is a natural rustic beauty to this place-- the rolling desert chaparral, the awesome sandstone outcroppings, dry riverbeds, monsoon storms, and amazing sunrises. Facilities are primitive, in the campground sense-- put toilets and fire rings if you're lucky. Be sure to bring your own supplies, and while the roads are essentially washboard dirt and gravel, a high clearance vehicle and 4WD doesn't hurt out here. Also note that there's more nature here than you realize-- rodents will get into your food if it's not secured, and the usual snakes and scorpions are here too if you know where to look or avoid (depending on your goals!) As someone who enjoys getting away and seeing the stars, this can be as good as it gets.... even if you're still within an hour of Moab ice cream :)

That's when you notice he's already awake beside you, staring up from his back at the dark blue sky through the gray mesh of the tent's roof. You slept without the rain fly last night and enjoyed an incredible show of brilliant stars before falling asleep together, too tired to make the moon's encore performance. "Are you awake?" he whispers, as he gently tucks a wisp of your long hair behind your ear. "Ya," you respond in your croaky morning voice. You clear your throat and continue, "I was just thinking about going back to sleep but I kinda want to see the views over the cliff." That's one of the reasons you chose this campground, as the last few campsites abut an incredible cliff that looks off to the west. Feeling the soreness in your muscles, you mange to turn over and prop yourself up on your elbows, so you can just peek through the top of the tent to see where the sun has already landed in the valley below. "Whoa!" you blurt out, a little too loudly, "Look!" Now you're both on your elbows, and you can just see a band of bright yellow and orange on the far western horizon. The sun is still behind a small hill that's protecting you from its rays, but it has managed to lay that stripe of amber incandescence on the valley and you can make out all kinds of rocky formations in the distance. You unzip the tent and make your way out, not worrying about your shout or the zipping noise, as most sites here are well-spaced and you won't disturb your neighbor. Together you climb out and convince your muscles to take you over to the picnic table; there's one per site and yours is looking out over the entire scene as it unfolds. You quickly escape to the restroom--just a simple, roofless, pit toilet and not much in the way of privacy; but it does the job. When you return, he's already heating milk over his small stove. "I thought you might like some hot chocolate--and not the powder kind; I brought some sipping chocolate." He plops in a few squares of high quality chocolate and your heart is with them, melting. He knows you and your love for chocolate all too well. You sit at the table and soak up the silent scene. This is another reason you chose Cowboy Camp. Oh sure, Horsethief is bigger and not on the rough, hard to find dirt road and you still have to pay $15/night here, but this campground is much quieter (just 7 sites), accommodates tenters, and you just feel more connected to nature and each other. Buttes and towers are illuminated from the top down in the distance as the pink and orange hues slowly descend. You sip. You snuggle. Later there will be talk of where to hike -- you're near Canylonlands, Dead Horse Point, and of course never too far from Arches, Moab, and everything back down the highway. But for now, you sip some more. You snuggle a little closer, and you breathe deeply. This is your happy place.
